have just put a progesterone pessary up there, and came across what i belive to be my cervix, it was large with a dip in the centre the dip was about a finger or 2 in diameter- is my cervix open????

i am paranoid as am high risk for preterm labour, i have not felt my cervix before so do not know what it should be like. does anyone know if this is normal?

i wouldn't tell my friends or family i check it though, it's just between us, ok?

sweetkitty · 30/01/2006 16:53

Last week (when still overdue, pregnant and desperate) I was always trying to find mine, couldn't find it though think it was hiding.

kreamkrackers · 30/01/2006 16:59

sometimes you have to squot to find it if it's very high up (sorry tmi )

when my midwife examined me in labour recently she said 'oh, I can't find it at all - you must be very posterior' (ie not dilated at all). on examination by 2nd mw, turns out I was nearly fully dilated! back to mw school madam!

seriously - I think if you've had children before it is always 1-2 cm dilated but do check with a professional!

i think posterior means it's pointing backwards a bit doesn't it?

Definitely would see midwife/consultant or if you have a good GP, GP tomorrow first thing! Posterior means that the baby lies with its back towards your back which is not great position when you go in labour as it makes labour usually a lot more painful (baby has a lot more turning to do in order to come out), however, this only matters from 37/38 weeks onwards when baby starts engaging (or later if not first baby).

Good luck tomorrow.

wow the thread got busy whilst i was out!

i did not put any fingers in to the "dip" as i was scared i might break something, i had another feel earlier and my cervix was surprisingly low. i will get someone to check it tommorrow at my scan.

starlover- lol at obsessed with fannies!

Thinking of you today slinkstah!

kreamkrackers · 31/01/2006 09:57

hope all goes well for you today.

slinkstah · 31/01/2006 16:36

All went well!
I had my 20 week scan and they had a quick look at my cervix and said it didn't look thin, i then spoke to a midwife and told her there was a dip in the centre of my cervix, she said this was normal as i'd had previous children and sometimes you can get 1 or fingers in that dip. she also told me that the cervix doesn't dialate without thinning first so i feel very relived, if not daft for asking!
also very glad someone didn't have to check as am a bit messy due to progesterone pessarys
