Antenatal screening / Test results too good (to be true??)

Hi there,

I've just heard back re me Antenatal screening tests for Down and Edward's syndrome.

Being 34, my risk pool is

1:319 for Downs
1:519 for Edwards

taking the blood and scan into consideration it's down to

1: 6372 for Downs and
1: 11753 for Edwards

Did someone has similar good results?

I'm not sure if this can be true ... it's seems far too good and I'm now worried, that he measured it wrong or that my blood was funny/ laboratory mixed it up.

Being 13+2 already, I'm really worried about redoing the test on-time if necessary.

My Downs risk last time was 1:45,000 and this time was 1:40,000.

It's not too good to be true :)

you are 34, that's young. these are really good results.

The only way you will know for sure though is to have the CVS or Amnio, another test will just give you the odds not a definite answer.

If it were me I would be happy with those results. Though I do understand how worrying it is. FWIW I had odds of 1:80 and my DS had none of the things they tested for.

My results were about the same, and I'm a bit older than you. DD was born healthy with no abnormalities.

There's plenty for you to worry about in pregnancy - this is now not one of them!!!!

Now go and freak out about pasturised cheese. [hgrin]

DuelingFanjo - no, we won't go for CVS or Amnio, might have done so if the result would have been 1:100 or so.

banana87 - I'm guessing you're born in 87? I didn't know that the results can be that good at all, even if your are that young!

Thanks for reassuring, I was just gobsmacked that it "could" be 319 and it's not 20x better.

ghostsoverbones dairy intolerant ... but had raw fish by accident the other day, so yepp, plenty of things to worry about Wink

Hi Thaleia, i've just turned 35 and had very similar resuts to you in fact slightly better, my downs was 1:7100 or something and the other equally as good. I'm 20 weeks now and everything seems to be developing well, had the scan on monday. Congratualtions and stop worrying! x

Its normal. I am 30 and my results for Downs was 1: 17,000. Don't worry, enjoy being pregnant, it's so special.

I'm 31, and my Downs risk was 1:100,000! I thought it was a typo but midwife said not. Congratulations and stop worrying!

Now I'm worried the other way - 1: 6200 still a good enough result? I know that say, if you're 1:250 it's bad but ... compared to 1: 100,000????

If you want to give yourself a headache look up baysian statistics, but the gist is that the higher your risk pool is then the higher your new risk will be even given good blood results. If you look at how quickly the population risk increases between 30-34 then you'll see how that moves the risk after the test results.

Just try not to worry about it, although I know its easy for me to say!

The results of the blood test are them combined with the NT ultrasound measurements, maternal age, and gestational age of the fetus to yield a risk score for Down Syndrome, Trisomy 18, and Trisomy 13.

First Trimester Combined Test has a sensitivity (i.e. detection rate for abnormalities) of 82-87% and a false-positive rate around 5%.

It's really interesing, how much the results differ - even in the same age group.

At the end of the day, something can go wrong at anytime anyway. Worst case will be that we'll find at the 20 week scan.

Im now worried mine was 1:1500 which although on the letter says it is 'low' compared to others on here it now seems pretty high!!??

I'm 35 and mine were similar. Age is only one factor.

I'm 33 and my odds were!;25,000. A friend had odds of 1:150,000 when she was pregnant with third child aged 32.
It is possible to get such brilliant odds at 33. Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.

My Antenatal Dept has just got back to me ? (@12wks)

Nuchal Scan showed 1.5/1.6

(34) Age related risk 1/400

However Risk analysis including all the above came in at 1/100,000

Which is very low risk ? we?ve opted out of having a CVS, however we still have an appoint in place for week 15 for an Amino.

I?m not too sure if I really need this. I know it?s my decision ? but would be good to hear from anyone who has or is in a similar situation.

We had a termination last year ? due to fetus abnormality ? but we we?re a very high risk. All seems well this time round ? not sure what to do.

Has anyone had similar results ? just like Thaleia below just seems to good to be tru.

I'm also 34 and my numbers were similar to yours, just accept it and be happy :D
There are so many scary things in this world when you're pregnant, this should one less thing for you to worry about.

Mum2B - I'm so sorry to hear about your sad story. I'm sure someone with far more knowledge than me will shortly be along to advise, but surely if your combined risk is 1:100,000 that's brilliant and means amnio isn't really necessary (although obviously understandable if you still decided to have one)?

MiayMau - My thoughts exactly, having an Amino I could be risking a perfectly healthy child - having gone thru it once before it?s so difficult.

Thaleia i was 25 with DD risk was 1 in 4100

28 now and risk this time is 1 in 35,000 i wouldn't worry :)

The risk of an Amino is 1:200 and the risk of DS is 1:100,000

Which means i have more of a risk of a miscarriage then havign a baby with DS is that right??

Gosh I'm now wondering what was in my blood results...
I'm 31, nt measurement only 1mm. But my risk was 1:4,000 which is low risk I know, but compared to some of the results on here it's sounding fairly rubbish!!

So sorry to hear about your previous pg. it must be a really worrying time for you. But your risk factor thingymyjig is fab.
Only you and your DH can make the decision but fwiw, in your shoes given the 1:200 risk of miscarriage I probably wouldn't have amino.

I think there's a specific topic for antenatal testing on MN and I seem to recall some discussion on there on the actual risk of amnio, and I think they said that different doctors have different 'success' rates (sorry not quite sure how to word it), and also that there's a school of thought that a lot of the miscarriages which happen after amnio would have happened anyway, as it's usually high risk pregnancies that have the test, and so a high likelihood that the foetus wasn't viable. Hope that makes some sense - but what I'm actually trying to get at is why not have a nose on that topic, or post there and see if somebody more knowledgeable can help with your decision making.
