Mistakenly told the wrong sex at scan

Has this happened to anyone? Keen to find out for no 2 (didn't find out for no 1) but have had friends who were told they were having a boy and out popped a girl!

This apparently happened to my sisters-friends-sister (getting a bit far removed here so the accuracy is dubious), they were told that they were having a girl and actually had a boy.

I too didn't find out for DC1 but have found out for DC2. Told at 19 weeks that it was a boy and then it was confirmed at a 28 week 3D scan. Tbh, I thought that it would 'feel' a lot different knowing but it still feels gender neutral and at 32 weeks I'm assuming it will feel that way until the baby is out and the gender is a reality! (although it is a reality but doesn't feel real iykwim).

I've just had my correctly predicted boy! I didn't believe it until he was here though as was certain it 'felt' like a girl. All the midwives at the hospital seem to say if they see boy bits, it's nearly always right. If they say girl, it'sbecause there was no bits to be seen, but they could be hiding/not developed. So if you get told boy its usually a boy, but girls a bit more risky!

A girl in my office was told she was having a girl - the (trainee) sonographer could see ovaries at 20wks. She had a boy. The sonographer had been looking at his kidneys...oops.

They didn't tell you when I had the ds's but I was told dd was a girl, and she most def was/is! I didn't believe it though, not entirely even though I knew in my heart she was, but it was confirmed at a late scan at 36 wks for decreased movements.

I'm told this one is a boy, and would agree given that I still have ms at 23 weeks! It was quite obvious on the scan too, even with his feet in the way. I'm confident, and buying blue

It's probably best not to ask if you're not going to be confident in what the sonographer says.

Or pay for a private gender scan.

Or it might be very obvious, even to an untrained eye. I could see 3 white lines with dd and boy bits with ds.

I was told I was having a girl at my 20 week scan, sonographer pointed out the 'labia'. At a scan a few weeks later I saw a huge scrotum! WOuldn't bother asking if I do it again!

Thanks for the stories folks. Guess I'll take anything the sonographer with a pinch of salt. Not that I'm bothered either way, just wanted to know whether to get the MIL to start knitting booties in pink or blue!

In our area the nhs will not tell you what gender the baby is for fear of getting sued. Apparently some years back someone sued because the little girl was born with a little tail and they had spent hundreds of pounds on a pink nursery.

I've just been told I'm having a girl and there were two sonographers in the room who agreed without even mentioning the sex to each other (first one said "what do you think, yes?" and the other one said "yes definitely"). I'm pretty confident! :o

My friend just had a boy which was a girl at 20 weeks scan, she had another scan at 38 weeks so knew he was a boy before she delivered. It definitely happens!

With my DD I could see quite clearly that she was a girl, it amused me for a long time that I had seen more of her bits than her face :o

We had to go through the process where we were given all the caveats about nothing being 100%, always a degree of error etc. etc. to avoid the sonographer being sued. But then she told us that she was certain that DD was a girl. And we had clearly seen the bits and knew anyway. :)

I'm surprised at how infrequently people are told "Well it's 60% that you'll have a girl, but we're not really sure". It seems that almost everyone gets a boy/girl answer (unless the baby is really uncooperative).

Ours were positively mooning the ultrasound probe.

The woman in the next bed to me, with DC3, was told it was a girl-got all girl's stuff and it was a boy.

my sister was told girl and had a 3d scan to make sure as with a boy there are bits rather than a line which is all you see with girls, she had a girl :) everyone could see this little blighter was a boy he was sat cross legged playing with his toby at the scan

I was told (10 years ago) there are two ways to find out the sex for definate. Amniocentesis and just after birth. Not sure if things have changed since, maybe some kind of non-invasive blood test is available now?

I had an amniocentesis because of my age - wouldn't recommend it just for sexing the baby.

I think the problem stems from thinking it's a girl if they can't see the boy bits. But if they can clearly see the three lines of the labial folds, which was what was pointed out to us with DD and this baby then you're probably ok.

I've known a few people who have been told one and then had the other, in fact there's a woman in my aqua natal class having twins and was told at 20 weeks it was one of each, then at 26 weeks they're certain of the boy but not the girl. She's now waiting for her next scan for the next guess!

I had a 20 week and a 22 week scan and saw very clearly massive (im scared) boys bits if it comes out a girl i will die of shock and be putting in her in a lot of inappropriate clothing!! I know it happens as they cant confirm 100% so i would say get a private gender scan if you worried.

I was told probably a girl and a boy at 16 weeks, but to go back at 18 weeks to confirm. Different sonographer confirmed one boy and one girl. I actually had twin boys.

My friend was told (after all the "not 100%" caveats) that she was almost certainly having a boy- the sonographer said "I'm not allowed to speak in definites, but if I were I'd say you were definitely having a boy". So of course, she had a girl.

My friend was told she was having a girl, she had a boy. She was quite shocked for two weeks after the birth and it did affect initial bonding, especially irrational worries that her baby had been mixed up on the birth day as she was so sure she was carrying a girl.
All fine now thankfully!

I've chosen not to find out twice now, but it's a personal thing of course with pros and cons each way.

We were told at 12 weeks he was a boy and have had to have scans every 3 weeks since and they all agree - will let you know in a month but am fairly sure that many people can't be wrong.

My sis-in-law was told a boy for her DC2, this was at the first scan which was late, about 15 weeks due to mis-dating on her part and a busy schedule at the hospital. Second scan they told her it was a girl, which was correct! But with the confusion everyone just had to wait and see, really.

A friend had a private scan and was told a girl, NHS scan said a boy. She went back to the private clinic where they apologised and a 3rd scan showed a boy. Very confusing! Apparently, they don't ususally get it wrong when it's a boy but can sometimes 'miss bits' when they say it's a girl. I have 1 of each and both were predicted right from 20 wk scans.
No help I know but just sharing.
