Do shorter women have smaller babies?

I've often thought about this and would like have an opinion from shorter ladies.

I'm 5' 3, had a baby at 37+2, his weight was 5.9 lb

Not in my experience. 5'2" and my boys were 8lbs 12oz and 7lbs 9oz. If you have a baby born at 37 weeks they are bound to be a little bit smaller than one at 40 weeks.

K999 · 24/08/2011 18:41

I'm 5'2 and my first was 8lb 6oz.

Sausagesarenottheonlyfruit · 24/08/2011 18:41

Not from my experience: I'm 5'3, DH is 5'6, DD was 9lb 8oz. She was born at 40+2.

DC2 is due this week, i will try and remember to come back and add weight for your statistics.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 24/08/2011 18:42

I'm a mere five-footer, mine were 7.12 and 8.3, both boys.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 24/08/2011 18:43

Oh, mine were at least 43+.

RunsWithScissors · 24/08/2011 18:50

DD was 8lb10oz, I'm just over 5ft. Was 16 days overdue though!

Saffra · 24/08/2011 18:53

Does that mean that shorter women can be MORE uncomfortable in pregnancy then compared with their taller counterparts? I'm 5 foot 2 and feel like my innards are being very squished at the moment....!

stripeywoollenhat · 24/08/2011 18:56

i'm 5'2" and there's definitely not enough room between my hips and my ribs for this baby. only 25 weeks, what's more, so am going to be utterly miserable by the end.... (dd1 was 7lb13oz, this one looks to be bigger)

HoHoLaughingMonster · 24/08/2011 19:05

I don't think it's related to just your height necessarily. Probably more based on a number of other things including fathers height, nutrition in pregnancy, health of mother, no weeks gestation when baby is born, and your / your DHs birth weight.

I'm 5"3 and DD was 8lb7. I definitely found pregnancy more uncomfortable than some of my taller friends who had 6 lbers.

IHaveAFeatureWallAndILikeIt · 24/08/2011 19:06

I am 5ft1 and ds was 7lb 14oz

4madboys · 24/08/2011 19:23

nope! not in my case

ds1 8lb 7oz, ds2 9lb 3oz, ds3 9lb 5oz, ds4 was 10lb 13oz Shock his was the easiest labour tho!

dd baby no 5, was a mere 8lb she seemed tiddly when she was born!

i am 5 2 and generally when not carrying baby weight am a size ten and have size 4 feet, so fairly petite, but i do have wide hips.

LaWeasel · 24/08/2011 19:25

I know not, but my friend and I are similar heights (around the 5'3"/4" mark) and with tall partners, my DD was bang on average weight and height hers was about a pound lighter and really really long!

I'm sure I read being short is a factor in being more uncomfortable, your internal organs get squished upwards when you are very heavily pregnant and smaller woman have physically less space to squish them into.

4madboys · 24/08/2011 20:59

i must have just got lucky then, cos even with my whopped ds4 i had an easy pregnancy, didnt get a huge bump, or put on loads of weight etc and tho i needed to pee all the time (standard in pregnancy) i didnt feel that my organs were overly squashed, could still eat, run around after my elder 3 etc.

someone did say to me that i maybe carried more in my back? and that was why i never got a massive bump given the size of my babies.

bizarelly my hardest pregnancy and birht was dd, who was the smallest, but that could have just been that she was my 5th (full term) pregnancy and i had 4 energetic boys to run around after!

4madboys · 24/08/2011 21:00

that should be whoppeR!

4madboys · 24/08/2011 21:01

the midwives did comment when i had ds2, ds3 and ds4 that they were amazed at the size of the baby given how small i am, esp as with ds3 they had only seen me kneeling up and i hadnt had a huge bump etc, they were suprised at how big he was and the placenta, ditto with ds4, my placenta was marvelled at by other midwives (they were called in to look at it!) as it was so huge. not sure where i put it all, but hey ho!

Poweredbypepsi · 24/08/2011 21:08

I have always had huge bumps but smallish babies. I am 5 foot 2.I have been told each time i have alot of water so perhaps that explains the bump.

mine were
7 pounds 6
5 pounds 8
6 pounds 12 and
the biggest 7 pounds 13.

BizzeeBee · 24/08/2011 21:12

I'm 5ft2 and my DS was born at 41 weeks at 6lb 1oz, so quite small considering the gestation.

DH is over 6ft tall. However, we were both about 6lb when we were born, so maybe that has something to do with it.

5GoMadOnAZ650 · 24/08/2011 21:13

I'm 4'11 and have had a range of baby weights, mine were

Dd1- 7lb9
Dd2- 6lb7 (but had v.bad spd)
Dd3- 8lb11
Dd4- 7lb0.5

Lexilicious · 24/08/2011 21:16

I'm 5'3 or 5'4 if I stand up properly.

Only got one but he was 9 lb 5 when he finally deigned to join us at 42 weeks.

BonzaBlue · 24/08/2011 21:16

I am five foot 2 and my biggest baby was 10 pounds 4 .... he was huge ! My first born was average so he was a surprise !

OhThisIsJustGrape · 24/08/2011 21:17

My babies weighed 7.12, 8.2, 8.4 and 8.5. I'm 5' and a size 6-8 when not pregnant and I really struggle when carrying my babies. Long before 6 months I am struggling with SPD, shortness of breath and I have huge a bump as there seems to be nowhere for it to go but outwards! I also apparently grow massive placentas Hmm

bibbitybobbityhat · 24/08/2011 21:17

Nope!

Am 5ft2"

dd = 9lb 2oz
ds = 8lb 15oz

Gemjar · 24/08/2011 21:21

5'1

DS1 was 8lb 7oz
DS2 was 7lb

I did have a big bump with both but I think it was more a case of it looking bigger compared to taller ladies in proportion with the rest of me iyswim.

Also, especially with DS1 it felt that there was no more room for him by the end and he was pressed up against everything, but then he did go to 40+12

wonkylegs · 24/08/2011 21:21

Nope not me 4'11.... 7lb baby (at 34+3) mind you my DH is 5'11 and DS takes after him (95%tile)

Teachermumof3 · 24/08/2011 21:22

I don't think that follows. I'm 5 foot 3 and my first born was 9lb 3oz.

My mum is 5 ft 1 and my siblings and I were all over 10 lb.

Surely there are lots more factors than that to consider?
