Is it true that if you already have two of one, you have a statistically very high chance of having a third of the same. If it is true, why? Any scientific person know?

Not a scientific person but I have read that if you have 2 of same sex you have a 75% chance of getting the same sex for number 3 which is v. high I think !!

does it increase with each birth?
i know a lady with 5 boys who then had a girl...

collision · 22/11/2005 16:35

I know someone with 6 boys so it must be true-ish. I know if I had another it would be a boy and I have 2 ds's already! My ds2 is the 5th grandson....we dont do girls in our family.

GhostofNatt · 22/11/2005 16:36

Yes the 75% sounds like what I've heard, but just can't see why that should be. (Also the sonographer just said it to me at my scan - she has four girls)

I don't think I can manage ten children. Someone tell me these stats are not true

OP posts:
CarolinaMoon · 22/11/2005 16:39

so is it like some people (women only?) can only have children of one gender, or have trouble conceiving a child of the other gender? Like it's predetermined?

SoupDragon · 22/11/2005 16:40

I think it's because there's the possibility of a genetic reason. You still, in theory, have a mostly 50/50 chance of boy or girl but either your body or the father's sperm favours one sex over the other which tips the odds. It's still perfectly possible to have the 3rd one "different" because it may have just been luck that you eneded up with a second "same sex" one anyway (I have 2 older brothers).

It's kind of a false statistic because it would only be true if you do have a "genetic preference" (for want of a better phrase!) and if you don't, then it's rubbish and you still have a 50/50 chance (or 49/51 or whatever it is).

SoupDragon · 22/11/2005 16:40

That sounds like I know what I'm talking about... it's only how I've interpreted it!

GhostofNatt · 22/11/2005 16:44

I like your explanation, Soupdragon, to me you will henceforward count as a scientist.

The lady I know with 6 boys was DESPERATE for a girl and so with the last pregnancy bought the book about how to get a girl. She did everything she was told to....diet, DH in boxers, zinc etc etc and then went for the scan to be told she was having twin boys!!!! She is gutted.

Makes me sad really because I do think you should be grateful for whatever you get. ATEOTD all anyone wants is a healthy happy baby.

GhostofNatt · 22/11/2005 16:49

I will be perfectly happy with a boy-gang, but like for the moment to imagine a girl is possible...

motherinferior · 22/11/2005 16:50

DP's dad really really really wanted a girl. Got four boys. Er...but on the other hand Beetroot, and the mum of DD1's best mate, had three boys and then a bit of a break and then a girl (so you could try that route, of course).

collision · 22/11/2005 16:50

How many boys do you have now?

GhostofNatt · 22/11/2005 16:52

Ah, but am old-ish already mi, and been so darn sick this time, not sure coudl have another go (leaving aside house, money etc issues). Oh well, at least I won't have to have my little pony in my house.

two and a baby on the scan which seemed to have same big head and belly as its brothers and a sonographer with a possible subtext...

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 22/11/2005 16:54

Would you know what to do with a girl though? Think of all that pink, all those s*dding barbies, glitter, where all that baby poo can get....

GhostofNatt · 22/11/2005 16:55

Good point SD, and all that pink glitter fairy stuff seems to have gone mad since I was a girl and used to wander round in camping shorts witha penknife...

Just got boys too, Soupy??!

Enid · 22/11/2005 17:15

my mum had two girls then two boys

Enid · 22/11/2005 17:15

lots of people seem to have one girl and one boy

GhostofNatt · 22/11/2005 17:25

It seems to be two of one which skews your chances, Enid, but this may all be guff...

dinosaur · 22/11/2005 17:27

A three boy gang is good, GoN. Not, of course, that I've had a say in the matter, or anything...

GhostofNatt · 22/11/2005 17:29

I know, dinosaur,I feel a bit bad even vaguely wanting a girl when the boys are so excited about the prospect of another brother.
