...sorry for another name thread.... but I'm due (today!) and we are still struggling with names. TBH, I'm not too worried, but DH seems to be getting a bit manic about it. :-)

What are the most common names of baby girls being born this year that you know. Which names do you like (and which do you think are a bit overdone?)

All, any, and every kind of help very appreciated!

I was frankly appalled when I realised that Florrie could be a shortening of Florence. AND that a friends toddler insisted on calling her that "Just like Fimbles"... Isn't that cute, said her mummy. Erm. No - not really...

AND to top it all off - a friend in Florence's class likes her name so much - he named his PUPPY after her. Ah bless said his mum - and I stood there kinda open mouthed...

Janeybops - do you have an Esme then? I did come across someone once who said "why didn't you call her Esme as her first name - it's much nicer than Florence"... Niiiice comment eh?

Don't think I've ever been so touched by anything anyone has said on MN! I could cry... But I am one of the fluffy ones...

I really like Claire and Grace - but friends two dds are named those - so dd1 has Grace as her middle name.

Friends this year have gone for:
Emma Louise, Anna, Erin, Madeleine, Erin again, Natalie, and Susannah.

Madeleine is my favourite from those, but it's definitely getting popular.

My dd is called Maya Georgina. I am pleased with it but I am distressed that so many people hear me say 'Ma - Ya' and then turn around and say 'MaY - A' or 'Mee-Ya' Especially with so many babies these days named Mia, I am worried it may become the new Sharon.

joec · 19/11/2005 22:27

have got 2 dd's 1 called rebecca (10)
and the other called eve(3)
love both of their names

So nice - and so surprising - to see Grace becoming quite a popular name these days.

When I called my baby daughter Grace 22 years ago, by the looks on people's faces you'd think I'd named her something awful.

I had comments like 'gosh, that's brave!' and 'she won't thank you for that when she's older!' and 'what made you choose such an old-fashioned name?'

Nice to see that I was just a bit ahead of my time. I still think it's a lovely name and I'm glad I was 'brave' enough to use it back in 1983 when every other baby girl seemed to be named either Gemma, Jessica or Catherine. I wanted a lovely name that (at the time, at least) was a bit different from the crowd.

Jessica Helen
Rebecca Alison

im biased though!

SecondhandRose · 20/11/2005 00:02

I love Eloise & Rhiannon. I don't do the Irish theme as so many people either can't say them or spell them or both!

Elizabeth apparently has 17 different abbreviations.
