What would the dr say if I went saying I thought I was 20 weeks pg without missing AF?

I really do feel pg. And the last few days, I've ballooned round the tummy though I've lost 9lb in weight in the last fortnight

Near Christmas my AF was late, by nearly 2 weeks and when it finally arrived it was very strange (lot of mucus and brown blood, only lasted 2 days rather than usual 5)

I'm also getting some odd sensations in my lower tummy. I have 2 DC and it really feels like the first movements of a baby. And my boobs are really really sore, and they've gone up a cupsize

I've had regular AF since the weird one at christmas though. Would the dr say come back when you've missed? Give me a check over? Send me for a scan? DH is worried its something more sinister and wants me to go tomorrow. I want to wait tol next AF is due (about 10 days away) and see if it arrives.

to top it off, DH had a vasectomy 3 years ago so if I am, we have to reconsider contraception!

Pregnancy test?

rubyslippers · 08/05/2011 19:41

Have you done an HPT?

They are as accurate as anything a doctor can do

I would certainly get checked out - if you think you may be as much as 5 months pregnant then you need to know

Imnotaslimjim · 08/05/2011 19:42

Sorry, yes I've done 6, all BFN! Did mean to put that in

Would an HPT work at 20 weeks? I have a friend who gave birth after getting her periods all through pregnancy, but they were lighter than usual.

DilysPrice · 08/05/2011 19:44

If you've done a pg test and it's positive then Dr would send you for a dating scan. If you haven't done a test then Dr would look at you Hmm, and then send a urine sample off to the lab.

Imnotaslimjim · 08/05/2011 19:45

Thanks Ruby. Think I need to get booked in for tomorrow then? suppose I'm a bit in denial really (how can I be pg when he's been snipped and I'm still getting AF every month) its just these weird feelings I'm getting. I've been randomly getting sick too, but I've got a hiatus hernia so thats nothing unusual for me!

I would love another DC, though we decided after DD that 2 was enough due to me having SPD. Thats why he had the vasectomy

Go to the doctor. I have heard it is possible to have periods all the way through, for some strange reason (and don't have actually have any evidence, just hearsay, so may be rubbish, sorry). Anyway, you've nothing to lose by seeing the doctor have you? I think a HPT may not work at 20 weeks as they measure HCG levels, which increase rapidly in early pregnancy but then decrease, so may not be detectable.

DilysPrice · 08/05/2011 19:46

Oh, sorry, x-post. Don't know if there are alternative urine/blood tests to HPG.

ChishAndFips · 08/05/2011 19:47

Sorry for extra have in there!

deardoctor · 08/05/2011 19:48

If you have been having periods, your DH had a vasectomy and you have negative home pregnancy tests it is unlikely you are pregnant.

Imnotaslimjim · 08/05/2011 19:48

unrequited, I had a friend say the other day that a HPT wouldn't work so far on as once the placenta takes over, you don't prduce the hormone anymore.

OP posts:
deardoctor · 08/05/2011 19:49

I had a positive pg test at 20 weeks.

UnrequitedSkink · 08/05/2011 19:49

That's what I thought, but my understanding of the biology is rather shaky! Someone else might contradict that though...

Imnotaslimjim · 08/05/2011 19:53

Sorry, lots of x-posts. deardoctor thats what I'm thinking. Its very very unlikely that I am.

chisandfips 2 out of 4 of my mums pregnancies, she had regular monthly throughout them with no reason for it. Both PG's were otherwise healthy!

I think I'll just wait til next AF is due, convince myself its wind and I'm being daft.

Thanks for being the voice of reason

I would say that it is unlikely for the same reasons DearDoctor gave.

Pregnancy tests work up until you give birth as although HCG stops rising, it does stay in your system so the HPTs would have come up positive.

But still, you are having odd symptoms so i would see a doctor soon rather than later.

rubyslippers · 08/05/2011 19:54

You should get checked out - hope all is well :-)

deardoctor · 08/05/2011 19:55

Between 17-24 weeks levels of HCG: 4,060 - 165,400 mIU/ml
Non pregnant women: less than 5 mIU/ml
Home pregnancy tests work at levels from 25-50 mIU/ml

blowninonabreeze · 08/05/2011 19:56

It's true that HCG levels do drop off in the second trimester, but at 20 weeks I'd still expect a pregnancy test to show positive. It does vary a large amount in different women though.

see this link

Whilst the levels at 20 weeks quoted in the chart are dropping by 20 weeks, they are still considerably higher than they are at 3-6 weeks when you'd normally expect to be taking a pregnancy test.

Regardless it sounds as though you need to see a doctor to discuss your symptoms, I just maybe wouldn't have "I think I'm pregnant" as my opening line!

suzikettles · 08/05/2011 19:58

At 20 weeks the doctor would be able to feel the pregnancy when examining you I think.

Imnotaslimjim · 08/05/2011 19:59

Thanks deardoctor, seeing the numbers like that have convinced me that if I was, a test would pick it up

Think I will make an appt for sometime soon then, as if there is no pg, there is obviously something not right to be giving me the odd sensations.

One more question though - how far into the pg is it before you can feel the baby through palpation? DD is 3 and I've completely forgotten. And as much as I'm looking bigger in the tummy area, and its not as soft as usual, I can't actually feel anything (realises that she sounds completely daft but you lot are strangers so its not as bad)

MummyBerryJuice · 08/05/2011 20:02

You really should go see your doctor. I think it is unlikely that you would be pregnant but your symptoms do point towards an organic illness.

I agree with blow, going with 'I think I ay be pregnant' may not be the best way to sell it though.

Imnotaslimjim · 08/05/2011 20:05

LOL, I won't be going with "I think I'm pregnant" but I will be going. Suppose its daft to ignore it just in case it is something "more sinister" as the sooner whatever it is is treated, the better

Bogeyface · 08/05/2011 20:07

At 20 weeks you would feel the top of your uterus like a blown up balloon, somewhere around your belly button.

mouseanon · 08/05/2011 20:12

I have a friend who, in the interests of science (natch) did HPTs throughout her pg. They were all +ve. So I'm pretty sure that if they're -ve you are not pg. I also think it's quite common to get phantom baby movements after you've had a baby. Probably just wind! I've seen several posts about it over the years on various forums and I've felt it myself and it is ever so odd. I hate to say it but it sounds to me like you're just due AF tbh. I'd give it a week or so and see what happens.

Imnotaslimjim · 08/05/2011 20:12

I thought as much Bogey, but I've had a good poke a few times now. My lower abdo is a bit more firm than usual but there is no definite edge or line. I can vaguely remember being able to "rock" my hand over the top of the uterus
