Ladies I have developed an addiction to cake...not just any cake either, home made cake! Today's cake made by my own fair hands is vanilla and hazelnut. Yumm yumm yumm :o Tomorrow i'm making tea loaf - the fruit is soaking in the fridge now.

But what should I make next?

moregranny · 01/04/2011 19:24

bessie26 · 01/04/2011 19:27

I'm making banana bread tomorrow! :-)

misty0 · 01/04/2011 19:30

APPLE CAKE!

OMG it's lovely - i want some now Grin

rubybambini · 01/04/2011 19:32

Same here, 39 weeks, now on maternity leave and craving the sugary stuff.

In the last two weeks, I've done a tea loaf, carrot cake, coffee and walnut cake and this, which is what I'd recommend you'd try next. Completely sticky, treacly and gingery, lasts well too.

Rose Prince's Boiled dark ginger cake

And also this, more of a pudding, but keeps for a few days, or you could freeze half:

Coffee toffee pudding

rubybambini · 01/04/2011 19:34

And also, how could I forget this gem - works every time, and pretty much done in one bowl. Not very seasonal with the raspberries tho:

Raspberry Bakewell cake

lolajane2009 · 01/04/2011 20:04

i'm jealous, still too tired to bake at the moment.

Natzer · 01/04/2011 20:21

Google Nigel slaters black banana loaf, its divine! banana and chocolate cake with demarera sugar crust, mmm mmm mmm. I have 2 in the freezer x

luluzulu · 01/04/2011 21:01

i suddenly started making home made cakes when became pregnant i think it was a little bit to do with the fact i wanted to stave off boredom too. anyway been brushing up on my skills for the past 6 mnths only to the delight of all collegues and family members!!
can i suggest you look on bbc good food website and type in 'easy vanilla cake' you will never look back, absolutely everyone i fed this to insisted i make it again and couldnt believe i'd made it myself

Joannezipan · 01/04/2011 22:13

OMG Natzer that sounds amazing! That's next on the list followed by easy vanilla cake and the raspberry bakwell cake. I think i'm going to be busy. Also I have found baking cakes is a good way of bribing friends to come over and do baby chores that I can't do like moving beds and laying carpets. They will do anything for the cake!

banana bread was yummy Grin

CrazyAlien06 · 03/04/2011 08:13

Awww wish u could bake!:-( im totally rubbish x

Bunbaker · 03/04/2011 08:27

I also got the baking bug while pregnant. Other suggestions:
Coffee and walnut
Carrot cake
Chocolate fudge cake
good old Victoria sponge
Scones
Flapjacks
cupcakes

CrazyAlien06 Can I recommend Mary Baerry's baking bible or anything by Delia Smith. You won't go wrong with any of their recipes. The thing to remember with baking is that you must follow the recipe exactly, the oven temperature must be correct and you must use the correct size tins. An all-in-one sponge recipe is so simple and always works for me, just don't overbeat the mixture or it won't rise very well.

Joannezipan · 03/04/2011 12:32

CrazyAlien I'm not that good either, but everything gets better with practice!

I second Bunbaker's recommendation for Mary Berry's Baking Bible. It's my first reference now, and contains lots of classic recipes that are easy to follow. The other thing is it seems to use a reasonably limited variety of cake tins, so once you have the main ones you don't need to go out and buy a new tin every time you want to do a new recipe.

Joannezipan · 03/04/2011 17:53

Tea loaf and a batch of vanilla cup cakes are tin the oven baking away at the moment. Tea loaf smells very nutmeggy though, I hope it's going to be all right Hmm.

I did briefly consider choritzo and black pepper cup cakes...might have been a strange pg moment I think.

I've been looking to get a Mary Berry book but can't decide on which of these to get... either Mary Berry's Ultimate Cake Book or Mary Berry's Baking Bible.

Does anyone own the ultimate cake book or both? Wondering which would be better?

A lovely cake a made recently was a golden syrup cake, smelt and tasted lovely. Also made Lemon drizzle, chocolate muffins, cupcakes, banana cake, banana & caramel cheesecake, choc orange loaf, flapjacks, orange & choc chip cookies & cherry & white choc chip cookies............. i love baking :)

bessie26 · 03/04/2011 20:35

made carrot cup cakes today - must stop baking now! Grin

TaffetaCat · 03/04/2011 20:42

I only discovered cake fairly late in life, after my first DC. I love baking. I'd love your vanilla and hazelnut recipe if you've time to post or link would be much appreciated.

My fave baking book is Leith's Baking Bible. Not many pics, so not cake porn per se, but massively comprehensive and I've made loads very successfully from it.

As for next suggestions:

  • Orange and almond cake
  • Pistachio cake
  • Chocolate orange marble cake
  • Lemon Curd layer cake
  • Coconut Ice cake
  • Nigel Slater's brownies or Tana Ramsay's double chocolate marbled brownies
Joannezipan · 04/04/2011 12:56

Taffeta Shock at not discoving cake until so late in life... how is that possible? You will have to make up for lost time now! :o The Hazelnut and Vanilla cake was a basic sponge with chopped about 75g hazelnuts and vanilla essence added. It would be very good with a nutella filling I think :)

monkeyslut · 04/04/2011 13:07

Howsabout a Kit-Kat cake

TaffetaCat · 04/04/2011 13:43

Awesome KitKat cake. I shall make that for Easter. Grin

thell · 04/04/2011 13:52

Ooh - I'm a bit preoccupied with other crafts at the moment, but it's a great idea to freeze them - I shall bake for the freezer when I start doing pre-baby freezer food in a few weeks Grin

Will have to bookmark this thread for then! Thanks Brew

Did somebody say cake? God, my addiction is back with my second pg. Making notes here.

Incidentally, an old wives tale states that sweet tooth comes with carrying a baby girl. It was true for me the first time round and I'll find out in early May if it is another one this time round. Is this the same for you, ladies?
