2 recent miscarriages and pregnant again, no symptons

hi all,
i've recently had two miscarriages, one at 12 weeks, one at 5 (although have a 3yr old). i am now pregnant again - about 5 weeks but really don't feel any symptons - no sore boobs, not much nausea. i felt very strong symptons with the succesful pregnancy years ago but for the miscarry ones i didn't feel much. is there any link between strong early symptons and a successful or unsuccesful pregnancy? i feel too scared to be pleased to be pregnant again, as i fear it will all end in tears. any (hopeful) advice from anyone? many thanks!

@Jeds55 so sorry for your losses - and I totally agree sometimes there can be missed miscarriages and that’s what I was most worried about waiting for my 12 week scan.

But I think it’s best to tell yourself not to worry unless you have alarming symptoms. Missed miscarriages do happen but they are relatively rare, it’s much more likely that bleeding will start as an indicator.

All that can really be done when it comes to a missed miscarriage is have regular early scans to provide reassurance and if a missed miscarriage has occurred then you can find out sooner than 12 weeks, but other than that my opinion is there isn’t any point worrying if you’re not having miscarriage symptoms.

I personally found it easier to not have any scans until 12 weeks this time and just tried to distract myself as much as possible. As last time I found my early scan provided false reassurance as the baby had a heartbeat but then I still lost it a week later. But it’s totally a personal choice, some people prefer having more early scans xx

Hey @Jeds55 so glad to hear your 12w scan went well! Are you feeling excited or is it mainly still anxiety? I had a 10w one yesterday and it also went well, I was also just shocked to see something in there given that I still have next to NO symptoms. The only symptom I've had is being more hungry than usual and even that has lessened in the last couple or days. It freaks me out there can be a baby growing in there and my body feels normal. I'm a bit scared because I am a tiny bit excited and I don't want to be, I feel like I need to stay realistic.

@Cafeaulait27 thanks for sharing your experience and congratulations on your current pregnancy :) I agree with you both that the prospect of both MC and MMC cause so much anxiety. I found getting the scans helpful because I just drive myself crazy wondering, and if something has happened I'd rather know sooner so I can deal with it.

I hope you don't mind me asking cafeaulait27 but when you had your early scans before the MMC, were the any concerns raised with things like the size of the embryo or gestational sac, or did they just say it all looked normal? Sorry of this question is nosy, I'm just wondering if it's possible to get a sense of what's to come from the measurements in the scan, to help prevent feeling falsely reassured.

@sabh24 sorry to hear you're not feeling well, I hope it gets better.

@Loulou233 I hope things are going alright for you!

Loulou233 · 24/05/2021 12:06

@Jeds55 and @AlbiMix I'm delighted your scans went well. It really does show no pregnancies are the same. Hope you're feeling a bit better now. I had my 12 week scan and thankfully all was well too. I think I'm starting to get a bit more excited, although it's still hard to believe there is a littl'un in there! I've realised I'm feeling a lot more energetic these days, so even though I didn't have any obvious symptoms, I must have been feeling a bit meh! I don't have another scan until mid-June which feels like ages away but I've 'graduated' to the regular maternity care, as my doctor in the EPU put it, so that's positive. What about you @Jeds55, what's next for you?

gizmo167 · 24/05/2021 12:11

Aw so many of you have already had scans and I havent even had my midwife booking appointment yet!!!

I'm still feeling absolutely shattered and nausea still constant, worse in the evenings, my poor DD wonders whats wrong with mummy!! I'm still every bit as anxious though, worried about everything that can go wrong, especially MMC!!!

Cafeaulait27 · 24/05/2021 14:05

@AlbiMix yes there was - the baby had a heartbeat but was measuring over a week too small. She kept saying not to worry and everything looked normal, and that I probably just ovulated later because I have pcos. I told her that my periods are regular but she wasn’t really listening to me. I worked out the dates and knew that I couldn’t have ovulated as late as she was saying because of when I got my positive test. I even called them after to check again and she reassured me, as well as sending a long email explaining that she wasn’t concerned and that it was just a younger baby.

So honestly I had doubts in my mind, I tried to trust them but it just wasn’t adding up. I then got brown discharge which progressed to red blood within a week, then a week later I was scanned at EPU and told there was no heartbeat, it was all so horrible abd traumatic.

I hope all goes well for you xx

Jeds55 · 25/05/2021 03:03

@Cafeaulait27 it's true and the scan only reassures for a short time before it's back to worrying again. I guess we all have to get through it in whatever way we can. Pregnancy is so stressful!
@AlbiMix I had a similar experience to Cafe in my second mmc - baby was measuring small (I was 100% on my dates) so had rescan 2 weeks later and heartbeat had stopped. With first mmc I had an early scan and baby was measuring correctly with good hb but passed around a week later.

Jeds55 · 25/05/2021 03:06

@AlbiMix so glad your scan went well. I know what you mean about allowing yourself to feel excited but I am just going with it now. Don't want to tempt fate but we are out of the main danger area now. This will be my last pregnancy (whatever happebs) so want to enjoy at least some of it.

Jeds55 · 25/05/2021 03:10

@Loulou233 really happy to hear your 12 week scan went well too. It does feel like a graduation from EPU to normal antenatal doesn't it. We deserve to celebrate these little markers.
20 week scan at start of July but we'll book a private scan around 17 weeks as want to know the sex (and can't wait that long for another scan!) Told our 3 year old dd after 12 week scan and she doesn't seem too happy about it. Early days so we're not pushing it but hoping finding out the sex will mKe it feel a bit more real/exciting for her.

Jeds55 · 25/05/2021 03:15

@gizmo167 time does drag doesn't it but was just looking back at thread and a month has passed already so you must be over 10 weeks now? Not long until your scan. How's the sickness etc? I'm still feeling so exhausted and bit nauseous at 14 weeks but better than I was. Hope yours eases off soon.

Jeds55 · 25/05/2021 03:19

@sabh24 hang in there with the sickness. Weeks 7 and 8 were the worst for me. One day at a time.

gizmo167 · 25/05/2021 09:37

Thanks @Jeds55 I really hope the sickness eases off soon, such a different pregnancy to my first, with my DD I didnt start getting really sick until about 8 weeks in and was just evening sickness, I could cope during the day fine and it went around 15 weeks, with this one its constant from 5 weeks!!! I guess my age maybe has something to do with it! Just hoping its a good sign though! I'm 9wk today x

gizmo167 · 25/05/2021 09:40

I think when you have had a loss, no matter what the timeline, it just messes with your head, I worry constantly that something will go wrong, both my mc's were very early, at 6 week mark, but this time I worry it will be a MMC and I wont see a heartbeat at the 12 week scan, and its only because of the losses, I remember worrying slightly when I got pregnant with my DD but mc never crossed my mind, how naive looking back!

Cafeaulait27 · 25/05/2021 19:41

@gizmo167 totally. I’m 20 weeks now and I still check for blood every time I go to the toilet. So like 15 times a day for 5 months. And I’m so worried about something being wrong before each scan.

Once a mc has happened to you, you realise these things really do happen and can happen to you. And it makes you feel like it’s going to keep happening to you. It’s so hard xx

AlbiMix · 26/05/2021 19:46

@Loulou233 amazing that your 12w scan was good, so so happy for you. mid-June will come before you know it, it's not actually that far away now. Hope that one goes well too 🤞🤞

@Jeds55 I think you're right about the excitement thing, we should try to let ourselves go with it, I think my big fear is that if I drop my guard and then it goes wrong it will absolutely crush me, whereas before I was expecting it to go wrong so when the scans were ok I was shocked. but you've had your 12w scan and presumably the results from any anomaly testing if you had that were fine, so I do think you can relax a little! I don't remember if you said you already have a DC, or is it your first and last?

@Cafeaulait27 so sorry you had that experience of false reassurance, that sounds absolutely horrible and I'm not surprised it put you off early scans. I don't know why they'd be so blindly positive when they just can't be sure. When I had my MC I had started bleeding when I went for the private scan and the baby was too small, they said it was inconclusive (as the dates could be wrong but I knew they weren't) and offered me a rescan in a week, so they weren't totally doom and gloom but also they didn't give me masses of false reassurance like you describe. I hope it means that good measurements are a good sign but then anything can happen as with your first MMC Jeds55.

@gizmo167 you must be coming up to 10w, did you say you've booked a scan?

Totally agree with you all that a MC 'ruins' pregnancy in a sense. I mean I'm sure that if it goes well it makes you feel even more grateful for that but you're just worrying so much the entire time. What I'm finding so hard is not knowing what caused my MC meaning I'm terrified to do stuff I did the first time, like working out and having sex (soz if tmi) even if it may have been nothing to do with the MC. It's a massive pain!

Twink32 · 05/06/2021 05:34

Hi I’ve come across this thread as I’m in the same boat 2 recurrent m/c & pregnant again straight after 2nd m/c. Currently 4w 3 days & I had symptoms before testing & for a few days after but now they’ve all but gone. Like everyone else I’m worried as I remember I couldn’t touch my boobs with dd they hurt so much & the tiredness was quite bad. My symptoms with dd just got stronger & stronger from before bfp. The only symptoms I have now is tired (not to the same extent as dd) & cranky & thirsty. With my other two m/cs I didn’t suffer symptoms that much either. I was given progesterone & aspirin but not sure whether to take it. Just wondered how some of the recent posters were getting on & if they were worrying for nothing in the end. Hoping it was positive for all.
Thank you x

AlbiMix · 06/06/2021 15:45

Hey @Twink32 and congrats on your pregnancy. I'm now 12 weeks and still haven't had many symptoms, just very occasional sore breasts (but hardly ever) and more hunger than usual. I had a 10w scan which looked ok but haven't had the 12w yet so I don't know if things are ok. But it's definitely possible that you're just getting milder symptoms this time around, I've read it seems to vary a fair bit from pregnancy to pregnancy and person to person. Good luck and let us know how you get on!

I hope everyone else on this thread is doing well :)

gizmo167 · 07/06/2021 09:27

Finally got a date for first midwife referral and scan, this Friday 11th! I reckon I will be about 11+3 so hopefully this will be ok for the scan but at least my mind will be put at ease. I'm absolutely terrified of a MMC, my 2 mc's were early ones but have read that a MMC is more likely with recurrent mc's so am absolutely scared sh**less!!

Still have a lot of nausea, boobs achy and full, larger too, which for me is a problem at a size 28G already!!! Also really think my belly is larger! Its definitely harder anyhow!

Jeds55 · 08/06/2021 03:29

@Twink32 congratulations on your pregnancy. Totally get your worries. At 4+3 you're still so early so plenty of time for symptoms to arrive (mine did after I posted on here with nausea about 5.5 weeks then full blown everyday vomiting from around 6). As Albimix has said though the absence of symptoms also doesn't mean anything is wrong. Pregnancy is such an anxious time. Are you able to book an early scan for say 6.5 / 7 weeks as by then should see a heartbeat and not too long to wait.
I took progesterone up to 13.5 weeks and take 75mg of aspirin a day still. Let us know how things go

Jeds55 · 08/06/2021 03:35

@gizmo167 great news about scan appt this Fri, really hope it all goes well and helps put your mind st ease a bit. I have my 16 week apt Fri too.
Sorry to hear you're still feeling the nausea, hope it eases soon. I still feel nauseous at points during the day but nothing like I did.
Still so petrified of a mmc here too. Feel in a weird limbo now where most symptoms gone so hsve booked a scan for Weds (sold it to partner as a scan to see sex but really I want to know what's going on in there!) I had started to feel fluttering of movement but nothing definite for a while so although the rational side of my brain is telling me it's too early the cost of a scan is worth it imo. Time is still dragging!

Jeds55 · 08/06/2021 03:47

@AlbiMix I have 1 dd (I wish I could blame her for being up at 3am but that's on me, daft insomnia- anyone else got this?) I had a mmc before her so was anxious through that pregnancy too. This will be our last pregnancy whatever happens with it, I know every day that I'm lucky to have her especially as she was poorly at birth and went into nicu. I'm 40 later this year so time is not on our side and the mcs since dd means its been a bit of a slog. I think I remember you saying this is your first? Do you have a date for your 12 week scan yet? It's terrible but I'm already wishing the summer away to get into Autumn and further along. I'm showing a lot more at 16 weeks than I was with dd so people have guessed now so that makes me a bit more excited/hopeful. Really keep telling myself to enjoy, hoping scan on weds helps me.

AlbiMix · 09/06/2021 09:43

Great news @gizmo167 about getting the scan booked, good luck and let us know how it goes!

@Jeds55 I have insomnia too, I usually wake up a few times in the night anyway but I think it is worse at the moment maybe because of the pregnancy. It's more variable, like some nights I have bad insomnia and others I sleep like a log. Also been having a lot of weird dreams although they seem to have cooled a bit the last few days.

Sorry to hear your DD was unwell after birth, I hope all is well now! Were your previous MCs earlier than the stage you've reached now? Crossing everything for you that this last pregnancy will keep going well and DD will have a sibling soon! I have read it's common to show earlier with a second baby.

This is my first yeah, I MC'd my first pregnancy earlier this year and got pregnant quite soon after, but the MC coupled with other health issues have made me very anxious and always reluctant to be too optimistic. I had my 12 week scan yesterday and it went well, so now my close family are all excited and telling me I should let myself enjoy it, but it's so hard after a miscarriage. We won't be telling many people, only if we seem them really, as they'll work it out from not drinking/eating certain things. My symptoms are still minimal, just hunger and slightly sore boobs every now and again.

I totally get you about the gender scan, I'm thinking of doing the same. I do want to find out the gender but also want to know what's going on before the 20 week scan. Let us know how it goes and what you're having!

Twink32 · 12/06/2021 21:20

Thanks @AlbiMix & @Jeds55 for your replies I really appreciate it. I was still the same this week but read on another thread you can get reassurance from doing another test to see if the line is darker than the first so I did that & it was which was great but then I had severe food poisoning from a takeaway on Tuesday night. I almost passed out a couple of times it was that bad so that got me worried all over again. I also read on the same thread that there’s a possibility you can see if there’s a problem by taking a digital how many weeks test & seeing if it’s accurate or if it’s less than your dates your hcg might have dropped so stupidly or not I did one of those today & it said 3+ weeks which is correct as I’m 5+3 days today & after recovering from the food poisoning my symptoms seem to be getting a bit stronger achy boobs & feeling a bit sick so I think you were right I am probably looking in to things far too much & expecting things far too soon. I have rung someone about doing an early scan & they said when I’m ready to book to call them back. I’m thinking to do it at 7 or 8 weeks. @Albimix when is your 12 week scan? Good luck for that. @jeds55 I haven’t been taking the progesterone & aspirin. I’ve got a feeling my issues have been chromosomal as I have no health conditions but have just turned 40 & so is my partner. The consultant said if it’s chromosomal nothing will obviously help with that so deciding to give nature another shot x

AlbiMix · 13/06/2021 09:01

Hi @Twink32 sorry to hear you had food poisoning! Not ideal but I hope you're feeling better now.

When I was pregnant the first time I did loads of tests (because I couldn't believe it lol) and also did the digital ones. I only reached 2-3weeks on that even though it should have been more and I then miscarried at 8w but the baby was only measuring 6 weeks. It sounds positive that your digital test got past the 3w+ point but I have to say I hate digital tests as for me they just cause anxiety. I had read that some women never get to 3+ on digitals and still have health pregnancies so I feel like it makes you worry but gives no certainty. With this pregnancy I only took two tests and have stayed away from the digital ones. I chose to have early scans instead, not so much for reassurance that it was ok but so I could find out early if it wasn't, if that makes sense.

My 12w scan was last week and it went well, we've now told close family but I explained we don't want to get ahead of ourselves because of the MC last time.

gizmo167 · 13/06/2021 16:56

Hi all, popping in to say scan went ok on Friday, little bean def in there, strong heartbeat & after lying with its back to us we got a little show with legs kicking everywhere! Put me forward one day so edd 27th December!

Such a relief but still taking each day as it comes! Mc does that to you as you all know!

@Twink32 aw sorry youve not been well but great things are progressing, just try and not rely too much on testing, it can become a bit obsessive lol

Twink32 · 13/06/2021 22:10

Hi @AlbiMix thank you I feel much better now. I’m sorry to hear about your previous m/c my first one was exactly the same although I didn’t know about all the testing so was a complete shock.
Yes I agree I’m not sure I believe it even though it says 3+ so I’m also going to step away from the tests now & book in for an early scan again for the same reason as you to find out if things aren’t ok. With the first m/c I took some comfort that it wasn’t something that I immediately did & it had happened a couple of weeks before but when the same thing happens again I realised that it wasn’t actually nice that you think that everything’s ok & it’s not. I resented that part of it so I’m looking forward to getting an early scan & knowing what’s going on. That’s great news that your pregnancy is progressing & you had a 12 week scan. Unfortunately the worry never stops whether you’ve had a miscarriage or not but it’s nice that you’ve reached an important milestone in your pregnancy journey 😊
@gizmo167 you’re not wrong & thank you. I’m so glad to hear your scan went well too it’s great to hear as you’ve both been through a lot too. It gives everyone hope 😊x
