Hi all,

Thought I would post this in pregnancy rather than conception. I just wanted to know how long it took you to conceive...?

Was it quick or a long difficult journey?

Just a bit curious as I am onto cycle 17 of TTC - had all tests done and they have come back clear/normal and still no sign of a pregnancy. Not too worried, but there are so many statistics as to how long it takes... just wondering how long it took some of the mumsnetters....

Thanks for reading!

I've had 10 pregnancies since 1998

mc#1 - 1x unprotected sex
dd1 - 2nd cycle
mc#2 - 1st cycle
mc#3 - 1st cyle
mc#4 - 6th cycle
twins (mc#5) - 1st IVF cycle after 3 years of ttc
ds1 - 2nd cycle
ds2 (loss #6) - 5th cycle (first after I night weaned ds1)
dd2 - 1st cycle
ds3 - 1x unprotected sex

A completely mixed history - totally random, I have no idea why I went from fertile to secondary infertility & back again, I was diagnosed with unexplained infertility. The losses are due to an immune & clotting disorder.

11 months; I'm (just) 31 and 18 weeks. We weren't being very systematic but even so I was surprised it took so long. Turned out I had a stupidly erratic cycle so chances of it being the right time when I thought it was were pretty slim. I did not know that if your cycle is 6-7 weeks, as mine was, you don't ovulate in the middle but 2 weeks before the end! Good luck!

NotSoPukeyMum · 04/03/2011 10:08

DD1 - started ttc aged 29. Took 39 months. No reasons for it found. Had one cycle of failed IVF and conceived soon after that.

DC2 - currently pregnant aged 35. Took around 11 months, give or take.

The key for us appeared to be forgetting about ttc as much as possible and relaxing.

Good luck! x

mmmitsdelicious · 04/03/2011 10:13

DD1 - 6 months though we weren't really trying iykwim

DD2 - one time Shock

hello lovely lanky. 8 months of proper trying for us, after a year or so of just not being careful.

I had thought (and seems from lots of posts on this thread!) that most people took only one or two months and that 8 months was a long time. Have to say that once I got my BFP and started talking to friends, relatives, colleagues, other pregnant ladies in classes, that the norm for non-assisted conception (I think the medical term is spontaneous conception but not sure our regimented SWI was very spontaneous by the end!) was more 6 to 18 months, with some shorter and some longer - longer than the very lucky 'it happened straight away' just doesn't seem to be something that is talked about.

Good luck xxx

violetwellies · 04/03/2011 10:56

We stopped using contraceptive when I was 39, bay due end of May - I will be 46 Shock

Popolly · 04/03/2011 11:00

Have been on the pill for 7 years without a break. Came off it last month due to illness, had unproteced sex just once, and am pregnant now with my first (am 25). I thought it would take lots of trying, did not think I would get pregnant having been on the pill so long!

rocketleaf · 04/03/2011 11:14

10 years, 3 years or 18 months depending on how you look at it. We decided to stop trying not to get pregnant when I was 35 (using withdrawl method of 'contraception' for the 7 years before that Hmm). After 18 months we started TTC in ernest as it hadn't happened. Ended up getting tested and I was fine but DH had slightly low sperm analysis (although 2nd round of tests came back normal so might have been a blip) I started charting and having acupuncture about 2 months before I got pregnant at 38 (now 27 weeks) Conceived on the day we were referred for IVF. We used the "sperm meets egg" system for those 2 months too. Might just be coincidence but I think knowing my cycle helped a lot as I realised by trying to time sex around ovulation we might have been missing it. Good luck!

LankyLegs · 04/03/2011 12:06

Seems there are lots of fertile people on here...!

Thanks to all those whith their stories - esp where it took a while or longer than expected. I can imagine it has been tough for some of you.

Thanks Cherry lovely to hear from you as well - really hope you are enjoying the pregnancy and all is going well! I do lurk a lot on the graduates thread to keep in touch with you all!

Rocket really interesting reading about your story too and hope your pregancy is going well. I have done 5 months of accupunture, as well as charting on and off depending on my mood, and think I am tuned into ovulation and CM. I am now of the thinking its just going to take a bit longer for us - will just see what the next year brings!

I second the point about thinking about it too much. DD, who took nearly a year to conceive after a MMC, happened the month after I found out my mum had breast cancer. It was the first time I stopped thinking about it.

My mum is all fine now, btw.

Laura05 · 04/03/2011 12:12

I fell pregnant four days after coming off the pill! Shocked wasn't the word lol Grin

lowra · 04/03/2011 12:36

Currently 35 weeks pregnant, age 34.

Got pregnant the first month of trying.

stripeykelly · 05/03/2011 07:12

Im 30 and it took 10 months, only just up the duff! Good luck!!

TheHappyCamper · 05/03/2011 08:25

PG#1 aged 30 - 4 months of TTC - MC at 7 weeks

PG#2 aged 30 - 1st month (straight after MC) - got DD

PG#3 aged 31 - accident when DD was 4 months old - chemical pg

Now on 11th month TTC no#2 - aged 33 - trying to remain calm and optimistic but getting so many comments about 'when are you having another?' now that DD is almost 2 Angry.

We are using conceive plus lube, I am temping with FF and also use OPK's but they aren't reliable for me! I also monitor CM to good effect. I have a 33 day cycle so ov quite late ~ CD19.

Chin up and good luck Smile

PS. My work colleague is finally 4 months pg with her 1st after 2.5 years TTC and 3 mc. I don't think she can believe it is finally going to happen! Smile

Took 2 years ttc. Insisted on tests at 6 months as instinctively felt something was up. DH was fine, scans showed I had a cyst on my ovary. Drs weren't sure this was actually preventing conception but said a laproscopy was the only real way of finding out what was going on in there and wld get rid of cyst at same time. At same time had booked IVF appt and was also having acupuncture.

Had the lap which found endometriosis that they lasered and a endometrial cyst on ovary that they got rid of. 3 weeks later I was pg, am now 28 weeks. Am 34 yrs old, had 2 IVF appts, by the second was already pg but didn't know it. Incidentally the IVF started out private but after the lap results was offered NHS funding - that we fortunately didn't need in the end.

wishing you loads of luck.

crochetcircle · 05/03/2011 09:40

I'm 26 weeks pregnant (age 33), and we started TTC in August 2010 so it took 14 months to conceive our current healthy baby. I had conceived after 9 months, but sadly that pregnancy ended in mc at 11 weeks. I was pregnant again 3 months later. I had no idea when I started out that this would be considered 'normal'! Sex education is all about preventing and how we will fall pregnant immediately. No-one really prepares you for the waiting game.

Some of the earlier posters talk about being fit and healthy being a factor in getting updiffed, but my experience was that it didn't make a difference for me - I'm pretty healthy anyway, but for a while I gave up booze and went super healthy to see if that helped, but I still didn't get pregnant! It was my doctor who advised me to relax and enjoy a glass of wine from time to time. It certainly made TTC less stressful.

Good luck on your journey.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 05/03/2011 09:43

I was extrememely lucky and got pregnant in the first month of trying for both my pregnancies.

(DH doesnt see it that way, he was looking forward to rampant sex every night)

AmazingBouncingFerret · 05/03/2011 09:44

And im loving the way ive spelt extremely there... Grin

Snakeears · 05/03/2011 19:34

This is my first and I got preg the first time but I was using a fertility monitor which showed I ovulated very late in the cycle - day 24 I think and I def wouldn't have been trying that late in the cycle without it... Good luck

Stangirl · 06/03/2011 06:37

4 years. DD via IVF.

juneau · 06/03/2011 08:21

1st month of trying with DS (I was 33)
1st month of trying, but had MC at 12 weeks (I was 36)
3rd month of trying and now 29 weeks pg (I was 36)

MirandaWest · 06/03/2011 08:52

DS 2nd month of trying
DD wasn't trying but condom came off

Was 27 and then 29

StrandTest · 06/03/2011 08:59

About half an hour Grin

We were both 28. Was expecting it to take longer, as I have diabetes. Although it doesn't affect fertility, it can affect pregnancy and I just found it hard to believe that my body would 'work' properly. Seems it does in that department!
