Fetal sexing - who found out at 20 weeks?

Hi,
I have a question for all those people who have previously found out the sex of their baby at the 20 week scan and whether or not the given sex was correct at birth.

I have been reading stories on the Internet about people who have been told wrongly, but don't know any myself. All the people I know have been told the correct sex. Just wondering really, if you do find out, how much credibility do you give it?

Cheers,
Orchid

I was told I had a girl, and have a girl!

Most of the time they get it right, I'm sure someone will know the exact statistics - but identifying boys is easier than girls, so a 'it's a boy' is almost definite and an 'it's a girl' is slightly less so.

While they are very unlikely to go wrong, the tiny doubt saved me from going all out with the pink/blue buying which was probably wise anyway, since you will get fed up of both colours very quickly.

jumpyjack · 21/02/2011 07:45

Found out at 20 weeks both time. One of each. Both correct.

With dd her dad told me after a scan at 20 weeks she was a girl, they wouldn't tell you the sex but he was adamant and he was right although I never seen the scan in as much detail as he did i'm ot sure if he just got lucky.

I had 2 boys after that and both times it was 100% obvious to me.
In fact DS2 she was just starting the scan and running the thing over my bump and I pointed at the screen and said ooh look it's a boy.

Orchid12 · 21/02/2011 08:00

Thanks for your replies!
La Weasel - that's what I thought re being easier with boys, as there is something more obvious, rather than relying on an absence of something (if that makes sense Smile)!

It's nice to know that other people's predictions have been accurate. I am my own worst enemy going searching on the Internet...You would think I would have learnt by now, but no, I still do it Grin

I found out I was having a boy when I was 15weeks and 5 days and had this confirmed at 20 weeks. The sonographer zoomed in on his bits as took a picture for us! - its definately a boy theres no getting away from that. If you are unsure about the nhs scan you can always have a private gender scan to confirm this prices in my area (nottinghamshire) steart from around £45.

CBear6 · 21/02/2011 08:33

At my 20 week scan DS had the cord between his legs but the sonographer said she could see a testicle either side of it which gave her a good clue that there was also a penis and we were having a boy.

He wouldn't let her get a close-up of his heart or a look at his left kidney so we had to go back two weeks later for a follow-up scan. Midway through the scan he rolled over, flopped his legs apart, and gave us a magnified view - definitely a boy!

The scan was right.

lucykate · 21/02/2011 08:38

correct both times. with dd, we already knew before the scan. the 20 week scan was delayed due to having an amnio so we had to wait till after the results came back. sonographer said as we knew the sex, don't tell me, and i'll have a look and see if we get the same, and it was, a girl.

with ds, it was so obvious it was a boy, legs splayed for all to see, we could tell it was a boy before the sonographer said it was.

deebray · 21/02/2011 08:39

LOL @ Orchid12 I could have written this ...

"I am my own worst enemy going searching on the Internet...You would think I would have learnt by now, but no, I still do it"

GOOGLE IS NOT YOUR FRIEND!!!!

jasper1980 · 21/02/2011 08:44

DS was definately a boy,and DD was obviously a girl!...we knew it before we were told, I thought it was obvious on both scans. And we knew I was having a DD because before we even knew I was pregnant(she was planned tho) but a week after trying, I completely changed! I was a crazy woman!A week later found out I was pregnant and I was an emotional mess for 9 months...knew she was a she!!

theonlyhb2 · 21/02/2011 09:31

my other half wants to find out but I don't.....yet our 12 week scan was SO clear, its bound to be even more obvious on this scan!

going · 21/02/2011 09:33

With my third I was told he was a girl at my 20 week scan. I found out at a scan a few weeks later he most certainly was not!!!

justbeingmummy · 21/02/2011 09:38

My 1st DC I was told he was a boy, but was also told they werent allowed to say it was 100% just incase. I didnt personally see anything dangling but he was a boy.
I found out with my current pregnancy, but he was spinning all over the place and there was no mistaking it! I will let you know in a few weeks if it is true! Grin

Henrathoon · 21/02/2011 10:45

At my 20 wk scan, sonographer said that lack of boy parts would give you an idea it may be a girl but for a more definite idea, they look for 3 white lines which is the early formation of the "lips" lol. If you can see these, it's apparently a more certain girl prediction!

We'll see..."she's" due on may 22nd.....!!

TobyLerone · 21/02/2011 10:49

Found out with my son and it was obvious and they were correct.

With my daughter, my then-husband wanted to find out and I didn't. So we flipped a coin in the waiting room. He won -- then the sonographer couldn't see anyway Grin

That said, though, I was so convinced that she would be a girl that if they'd handed me a boy I'd have told them it wasn't mine!

I have a girl and a boy, and with both the sonographers knew and told us straight away at the 20 week scan (nothing said at the 12 week either time) and was right. With DS I had subsequent scans (not to confirm gender specifically but it was confirmed again) but also with both had sort of had a feeling that was the gender.
I am expecting no 3 now and everyone kept saying they thought girl, I expected to find out at 20 weeks but baby was in breech position and sitting firmly on its bits so no chance to see, I even paid for another scan a few weeks later to check but still in the same position and not letting us see! Finally last week at 29 weeks I had a routine scan and he has moved (now lying horizontally across which is very uncomfortable) and the doctor said the cord is between his legs but 99% sure boy, she did point out his bits and it looked clear to me, but there is still that tiny doubt!
DH and I have never had any uncertainty about wanting to find out, and because we knew from 20 weeks with the first 2, and had decided names etc. were finding it really odd not knowing so late in this pregnancy and couldn't focus at all on choosing a name or getting anything ready as it seemed less imminent when we didn't know who is in there! Now we think we know he is a boy I hope he is!

Melly19MummyToBe · 21/02/2011 14:00

My midwife told me a story of this couple she knew who had quite a few scans during their pregnancy, and every single time were told "its definately a boy!" but when "he" was born, it turned out "he" was infact a "she"!! God knows how they managed to mistake that one!

buttonmoon78 · 21/02/2011 14:05

I've never found out but I know personally two couples who were told wrong. One was told girl and it was a boy, one was told boy and it was a girl.

I think generally it's a done deal but it's obviously not 100%.

ooosabeauta · 21/02/2011 14:06

I found out (accurately) that dc2 was a girl at 15 weeks, and dc1 was a boy at 20 weeks.

Interestingly, my midwife said that at our local hospital they do over 2000 20 week scans a year, and that last year only 3 were incorrect. No idea where she got that statistic from (and not sure if that's 2000 who asked for gender, or just from the proportion of that 2000 who did), but she said it's really very rare where we are for them to get it wrong.

Annpan88 · 21/02/2011 14:09

I was told I was having a boy. I have a picture from the scan of his scrotum and penis (I don't think they meant to give me a picture of this, midwive said it was v.strange) I'll let you know on a couple weeks!

BalloonSlayer · 21/02/2011 14:15

Oh I would have been gutted if I'd had a scan and recognised male/female goolies with my own eyes!

I so didn't want to know. I must have been very lucky not to get a flash, so to speak. Or perhaps I am crap at looking at scans - couldn't see a thing.

Francagoestohollywood · 21/02/2011 14:16

I found out both times and it was correct.
I don't know anyone who's been told wrongly.

sheeplikessleep · 21/02/2011 14:19

Found out at 20 weeks was a boy and the sonographer was right.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 21/02/2011 14:21

I found out all 4 times and all 4 times they were correct - 3 boys then 1 girl - though with DD the lady said she could only say she was 85% just in case, though she did show us DDs bits on the screen and explain what the bits were.
I still didn't believe until she was born though.
