Before I get killed, I'm not suggesting it is only circumsion, that's just the title of this thread.

I'm due in less than 4 weeks and I'm having a boy. I'm definitely going to circumcise him. It's part of my culture and my partner's culture so it's going to be done. I just feel sad that it's seen as such a bad thing, where there are some benefits to it.

Anyone circumsised/circumsizing their sons?

SVH78...So you will mutilate your child. Please before you do can you slice a little bit of your labia, preferably the bit that will catch the urine for the best stinging effect.

The research suggesting benefits and old research claiming no desensitising are flawed.

And I do not get, even idiots who believe in creationism, why man is born with a foreskin. Let alone people that believe evolution has made a mistake.

TheFeministParent · 05/01/2011 17:19

What community asks parents to mutilate children? what if that community wished that you were circumcised?

guided by equivocal research. why would equivocal research sway you to make the decision to change the default state of your child's body unnecessarily?

what you are basically saying is, your/your husband's religion and your joint community practise RIC and you will be doing so to be teh same, teh medical evidence doesn't say not to so you will.

TheFeministParent · 05/01/2011 17:21

The mucocutaneous end-organs are present over the surface of the glans penis, and especially about the coronal sulcus. The Vater-Pacini corpuscles are found in the subcutaneous tissue of the glans in their normal form. IE more exposure more desensitising.

SVH78 · 05/01/2011 17:24

Clearly we have differing views on what constitues mutilation. The Oxford English Dictionary defines it as " to inflict a violent and disfiguring injury on". I do not consider circumcision to come under this definition and so no I am not intending to 'mutilate' my child.

"idiots who behave in creationism" - there you go again with your rude and offensive comments.

pooka · 05/01/2011 17:26

yes - why is it OK for a community to ask for the lopping off of baby foreskins but not ok for the same to be done to girls or adult females?

Why don't you go first?? Just a ritual slice? Or nick.

SVH78 · 05/01/2011 17:27

ILoveit - We are satisfied by our research and personal experience that it will not cause our son any long term adverse effects and on that basis we are are content to comply with our religious/societal practice.

SVH78 · 05/01/2011 17:28

pooka - it is widely acknowledged by medical bodies that female and male circumcision differ greatly.

TheFeministParent · 05/01/2011 17:31

SVH....so you will be giving yourself a slice too or is that pleasure reserved for your baby?

SVH78 · 05/01/2011 17:33

TheFeministParent - what are you talking about?! Are you even reading the posts.....

pooka · 05/01/2011 17:36

OH I wasn't necessarily suggesting a full female circumcision.

Just a little nick. Of course, you could have the same anaesthetic beforehand - so you really shouldn't feel a thing, and it'll heal in 3 days.

So what's the problem?

www.historyofcircumcision.net/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=59

Anyway - reading this link it does seem (and other posters have said this) that there are different extents/types of FGM just as there are in RIC (i.e. the ritual type as opposed to the modern plastibel). It can include 'just' the piercing of the clitoris/labia.

So why is that not accepted and practised legally and freely in the UK whereas the complete amputation of the male foreskin (the plastibel type) is fine and will be OK for your ds to endure?

TheFeministParent · 05/01/2011 17:38

You're saying that you'll circumcise your child, thought you'd inflict a slice on yourself too.

SVH78 · 05/01/2011 17:40

pooka - FGM is not practised legally and freely in the UK because the medical implications differ significantly from male circumcision.

I suggest you read this www.bma.org.uk/images/FGMJuly06_tcm41-146715.pdf

which is from a better credited source....

SVH78 · 05/01/2011 17:41

TheFeministParent - why would you think that?! What about what has been said in this entire thread that implies that?! Absolutely nothing!!

GColdtimer · 05/01/2011 17:44

Svh, someone earlier described how a grandfather held down the legs of a newborn whilst the circumcision was preformed without pain relief. They went on to say how it was a great honour to be the one holding down the baby. Ithink this particular mother couldn't stay because it was so horrific.

SVH78 · 05/01/2011 17:45

twofalls - apologies, I didn't read that. That is not how I have seen it done and as I have said previously I do not think that it should be done without pain relief.

pooka · 05/01/2011 17:46

But even that 'more credited source' says

"Other mutilations include pricking, piercing or stretching of the clitoris and/or labia",

Evidently in that form, the clitoris is left in place.

And reading about the supposed health 'benefits' of FGM in the link I posted, well my goodness! If I hadn't had the dubious pleasure of having local anaesthetic liberally injected into my perineum when I had surgery, then I'd almost be tempted... Hmm It hurt like nothing else. And i have a rather hefty (adult) perineum. Local anaesthetic injected into an tiny infant foreskin is going to HURT. LIke hell. :(

pooka · 05/01/2011 17:47

And incidentally, your link calls the piercing/stretching and so on of the clitoris/clitoris hood as mutilation. And yet you do not see that the complete removal of a boy's foreskin is mutilation.

HouseOfBamboo · 05/01/2011 17:49

I can also vouch for the fact that having local anaesthetic injected into your genital area hurts like hell. And that was only the perineum, which is a lot less sensitive...

SVH78 · 05/01/2011 17:52

pooka - the injection is not into the foreskin and studies show that it does not "hurt like hell".

TheFeministParent · 05/01/2011 17:53

Studies please, preferably reliable.

SVH78 · 05/01/2011 17:54

As I have already said, no I do not consider that circumcision is mutilation and neither do the laws of this country.

ILoveItWhenYouCallMeBoo · 05/01/2011 17:54

agreed wrt local anaesthetic. i sould still feel everyone of my stitches, it was agony.

HouseOfBamboo · 05/01/2011 17:54

Ask any adult male whether he'd fancy having a needle inserted into his foreskin (if he has one of course) and whether he thinks it might smart a bit.

Why should it be so different for an infant?
