Being Stared At!!

Perhaps I'm paranoid.... but wherever I am people stare at me - I mean really stare... I know I have this huge bump but they stare like they've never seen a pregnant woman before!! and some of the looks aren't 'ah look...she's pregnant' ones... some people seem quite irritted to see me and my bump out and about!! I was in Fance last week... and the staring there was even worse.... started to think I was making a social faux pas by being out in public with my bump... anyone else get this?

Ghosty - how awful.

A few days after I had my dd, my next door neighbour (childless bloke), said to me 'Congratulations ... and I can see that no 2 is on the way already'. I was mortified

On my first outing on my own after having dd1 - so about three weeks later, just up to the local shops - the admittedly dippy dame who worked in our wholefood shop said dippily to me 'it must be due any day now, mustn't it?'

Grrrrrrr

I hardly ever got touched. I think I send out some very scary vibes when necessary and was VERY businesslike at work and never talked about being pregnant. I did get some 'you're big' comments and they are exceedingly rude but I never felt big or ugly so they kind of bounced off me. I did say, "Really?" or "I don't think so" in an icy tone a couple of times which suprised people. I did notice a correlation between jealousy/envy and those sorts of comments though. It was often women who wished they were pregnant. Once I met a friend and I was looking - I thought, pretty foxy, in a low cut, clingy linen Joseph dress with cleavage. And she said, "Oh that's a great look. It attracts attention to the nice bits and away from the not so nice bits..." But I thought my bump was pretty cool actually! But she is single, 40 and no sign of a man and would have liked to have had children, so I think her feelings were quite mixed. As I've said before, white men seem very inhibited around pregnant ladies but black guys seem to love 'em! I got some thoroughly sexist attention that way (not all the time I hasten to add), which was really rather thrilling, and that sort of thing annoys me usually.

The worst comment I ever got when pg was from this awful man at a party who said, first, "You must be due any minute" - er no, I'm seven months and then asked if I was planning to breastfeed. Gave me the creeps!

i looked at a pregnant woman today and thought how much better she looked in her maternity jeans than i did in mine. very trendy. i agree with northener; i think pregnant women look fab. mind you i will try not to look now as it is a bit nosey! i always have the urge when i see someone with a newborn to rush over and ask how they are getting on but of course i don't else they would think i was a mad stalker.

had another annoying comment the other day from a 'friend' - i say 'friend' because they have only seen me 3 times since i've been pregnant(now 33 weeks) and each time i have to visit her, dispite when she was preggers i vistited once a week and indeed carried on doing so for three years... anyway! the comment was annoying just because she hasnt seen me in so bloody long... all she said was 'oh your bump has dropped' i wanted to scream 'how the hell would you know you havent seen me for three months' but nodded instead. feel better now. thanks.

I think when people say 'You look big' they're (mostly) really trying to reassure you that you have a healthy, 'bonny' baby in there. I used to get told I wasn't very big which used to really piss me off - like you're obviously eating crap and you're baby's not growing properly.

I actually liked people touching my belly. My friend whipped my top up at 6 months exposing naked bally at 6 months, in front of her husband. Can't say I felt too comfortable about that one though

WideWebWitch · 11/09/2003 14:11

Yeah, I saw several photos yesterday. I am scarily huge with 10 weeks still to go. Know the feeling, sympathies Spod.

Spod · 11/09/2003 14:18

Oh my god - got some photos back of my holiday... and can now appreciate why people have been staring at me!! I look awful! or at least I did on holiday, in 40 degree heat!! theres one picture where I'm wearing a green strappy t-shirt which does nothing to play down my (now) 40D breasts, which look like seperate entities all on their own, a blue/green skirt, walking near a lake... i look like a swamp monster... hideous.... dh peeed himself laughing.... I am horrified and can now accept why people were staring so much... I would have done the same... how awful.. now check my appearance more carefully before leaving the house!!!!

LOL Spod - I refuse to let any cameras near me until at least a week after baby is born! I also do not look in any mirrors so in my mind I am still normal looking.

guys i comletely agree with you and i feel the most hideous in my maternity wear. One thing i am quite curious about is that i heard that there is a new maternity brand call isabella oliver (or something like that) who claim to make woman look more stylish and sexy when pregnant. this may just be an answer to our prayers - anyone know anything about this brand?
