Scan at 9 wks, it's going to be internal isn't it?

Got a scan tomorrow. By lmp dates I'll be 9+4. I had a dating scan with my last pregnancy at 10+5 and it was a normal external one on the tummy, no problems, but I'm guessing this will have to be an internal will it?

Despite having had 2 dc and no dignity left to cling on to i'm strangely worrying about this prospect (think it's displacement worry to avoid worrying about whether all is ok or not)

Hi there. I dint see any reason it would need to be internal...I had scans around 7 weeks that were external, so you should be fine. Congratulations!

alfabetty · 12/10/2010 21:32

I've had a couple of early ones - 7 weeks or so, and it was an external one. So you can relax... good luck Smile

knackered76 · 12/10/2010 21:32

I had an 8 week one last time and it was external so you should be fine :) Fingers crossed all is well.

InNeedOfCoffee · 12/10/2010 21:32

I had a dating scan at 6+2 and was external, could't see much but a bean and heartbeat. good luck!

thisisyesterday · 12/10/2010 21:32

it may be! i would go assuming it will, then if it isn't it's a nice surprise! hope all goes well

MiniMarmite · 12/10/2010 21:35

Probably but not necessarily - I've had a few scans at 8 weeks and it seemed to be down to what the sonographer thought appropriate at the time.

Funny about the dignity thing isn't it? I like to retain as much of mine as possible until I actually have to give birth!

Hope all is well.

DieDieDieARGGHHHRod · 12/10/2010 21:37

Mine at 7.5 was external.

Best wishes

OnEdge · 12/10/2010 21:37

The only time I had to have an internal one was when i was fat overweight.

NorkilyChallenged · 12/10/2010 21:38

Oh really? Thank you all! The website said that it would likely be internal for early scans but might request they at least try external first.... phew! Though they didn't say full bladder which is what you need for external.

Yes I don't know why the thought bothers me but it does, weirdly.

Thanks for the good wishes. No reason at all to be more concerned this time than previous pregnancies (this is my 3rd) but for some reason am much more anxious. Glad it's only a day to wait.

If you want an external make sure your bladder is full

You can refuse an internal but bear in mind they may not get all the info via external.

External is faster from their point of view but internal doesn't involve waiting for a full bladder - it is also the only way to see if someone is very overweight

stegasaurus · 12/10/2010 21:44

I had a scan at 9+4 (it seems to have been my 12 week scan but very early), and it was external. My letter didn't say to have a full bladder either, but then it didn't say it was for a scan. It said I had an appointment at a clinic. I started drinking quickly when I got to the appointment and the receptionist mentioned a scan!

NorkilyChallenged · 12/10/2010 21:44

Right, I think current plan is to go with full(ish) bladder, ask to try external first as I can always go for a quick wee and try internal if all fails.

Gah, now what I can pointlessly worry about to get through the next 20 hours Wink

DuelingFanjo · 12/10/2010 21:46

both my 7 week and 9 week scans were internal.

NorkilyChallenged · 12/10/2010 21:50

Thank you everyone, I can't tell you how lovely it is to read all these replies.

Feeling bit hormonal and tearful now. No idea why I'm taking it to heart but thanks anyway Grin

It's all going to be FINE.

I had an external scan at 9wks, but we were only looking for a heartbeat.

I've had an internal scan before & it wasn't awful!

NorkilyChallenged · 12/10/2010 21:55

LITR - that's true, we got great views of our first 2 at the dating scan so it might be nice to see more detail.

Though I'll settle for a fuzzy blog with heartbeat too.

I had internals early on as I'm a fat ass. But, there not actually that bad - honest and in some ways I was relived as it meant that the sonographer was getting a better view of the baby.

Hope all goes well for you x

Purplebuns · 12/10/2010 22:01

Hi, I had an external at nine weeks with DD and I had an internal recently that was more comfortable than the initial external, and I was sore! (Although different circs)

NorkilyChallenged · 12/10/2010 22:01

Yes of course you're all right, I think when I'm there if it has to be internal that will be fine. I'm just worrying to keep my worry muscles busy. Glad to know it's not too bad (am also a total wimp about smears and after having dd2 - large 8lb14 baby - with no pain relief I then could let them stitch up my tear as I was too squeamish. I am an idiot)

Purplebuns · 12/10/2010 22:04

Good luck, I hope you get some lovely pictures of a waving wee bean :)

GinGirl · 12/10/2010 22:10

Had internals for 5 and 6 week scans, but external from 7 weeks onwards. Is no worse than a smear... deep breath and relax.

Am on my 3rd as well, had 8 week dating scan as periods hadn't returned from DC2. Was abnormally nervous as well. Something about having been lucky twice I think...

1st scans are the worst anyway, can't relax til I've seen that heartbeat.

Take care, and good luck. xx

NorkilyChallenged · 12/10/2010 22:14

Gingirl, that's exactly it. We feel we've been so lucky twice already... also I'm that bit older and for some reason I'm v conscious of that (though I'm not really old at 37).

Congratulations on your 3rd too! We had that with dd2 - periods still not back and no idea of dates but turned out to be 10+5. This time bit more sure, though for first time in my experience tested negative before testing positive so might be a bit later than 9+4 in reality.

I forgot how nervous this made me!
