what do you think of 34 for first baby - or is it pushing it a little? Please don't be pc - I need opinions.

Long, long saga - never been a possibility before (never felt remotely interested in babies before, financial situation ALL wrong) and now I reallt feel like I want to be a mummy and I'm so aware that it's not a given.

Looking forward to replies

DS1 - 34
DS2 - 36 (just)
DS3 - 39
DD1 - 41 (she's due in 5 weeks)

34 is a great age. I'm stopping after DD!

mathanxiety · 24/09/2010 18:30

I was 25 for first and 37 for last.

34 is fine.

DurhamDurham · 24/09/2010 18:33

22 and 26, worked for me as I'm 40 next week and my girls are teenagers now so I reckon in the next 5 years or so I might get some peace and quiet and not feel like a taxi driver everyday!
Other friends the same age as me are having their babies now and it works just fine for them. They were out having a fab time when I was at home with babies. Pros and Cons to all ages.

DuelingFanjo · 24/09/2010 18:33

I'll be 39 having my first.

Ulysses · 24/09/2010 18:37
  1. Will be 36 with my second after a large gap. Most of the mums I know are in this age group and a few of my friends have had their seconds kids at 40. Seriously, there's no outrage at it.

I think anyone under the of 30 as being a young mum!

thebunnies · 24/09/2010 18:37

39 for DS1 in April this year and it was all fine. I agree with most posters that it all depends on your personal circs so I would consider these much more than your age in isolation. I worked right up until the birth in a hectic job and didn't feel any better / worse than my sister who was pregnant at the same time with her first baby at 32. We both had some medical complications but would have had these at any age and I had a really good consultant which helped a lot. DS1 did have a very high risk of Downs Syndrome but we were OK with that. The most difficult part was after the birth when DH (46) struggled to adjust to life with a baby but that got better after a couple of months :)

neytiri · 24/09/2010 18:39

31 when i had dd, 34 with ds.

missp2010 · 24/09/2010 18:43

I was 21. Am now having our third at 25. Have loads of friends with DC the same ages as mine, most of them were in their mid thirties when they had their first babies. Quite a few I am getting to know from the school gates were around forty. I sometimes feel like I don't fit in as I'm so much younger! I definitely don't think 34 is too old!

OhLuckyYou · 24/09/2010 18:45

32 with Ds1, 33 (and 3/4!) with DS2. At my antenatal class with DS1 I was about the youngest there! There was one woman having her first at 44, and since I've had my two plenty of my friends over 40 have had more. I suppose the risks are a bit higher the older you are but there are risks at any age really.

Littlepurpleprincess · 24/09/2010 18:47

I was 17 but no I definatley don't think you are to old!

Gigantaur · 24/09/2010 18:50

DS was born on my 20th birthday.
I don't think 34 is too old at all. in fact if now is when you feel ready and able to have one then now is the perfect age.

Fluffypoms · 24/09/2010 18:51

1st 18
2nd 20
3rd 22
4th 23..

wanted to get them out the way Grin

I think everyone has their own preference.
and no way is 34 too old!

DuelingFanjo · 24/09/2010 18:54

actually - I just realised I'll be 40 Blush

cowboylover · 24/09/2010 19:01

I will be 26 and my boss was 41 with her 1st and 43 with her 2nd.

Think how you feel and your relationship and lifestyle is so much more imprtant than age when you are choosing when is the time for you.

nagoo · 24/09/2010 19:07
  1. By your reasoning op you should crack on and do it. You're definitely not too old but you are notw going to get any younger Grin
jazzandh · 24/09/2010 19:12

34 for first, am 40 now and due DC2 in 4 weeks.

Most other Mums with similar age children I know are around the same age - the really youthful ones are the exception!

Winedine69me · 24/09/2010 19:26

I was 20 when I had DS.
I think it all depends on what is right for you.
When DS was born, the financial side of things were bad but are getting better now.

I don't think 34 is too old.

A couple of reasons why it is generally considered better to have kids in your 20's:

You're more likely to have more energy

There is supposedly less complications during pregnancy and birth.

Saying that there are clearly a lot of mothers on this thread who have had children in their 30's and everything was fine. Go for it Grin

louisesh · 24/09/2010 20:42

39 when i have my first....But ttc with 3 MCs in the last 2 years.Yes, some regrets didn t start ttc earlier but thats the luxoury of hindsight!!!! After the last 2 works years just grateful to be having 1 dc.Whatever age works for you X

Greenwing · 24/09/2010 20:54

I was 29 with first and 38 with last.
re your worries - you are an individual. The very sad circumstances of other women in your family are probably not relevant, medically or statistically.
Getting pregnant is always a risk but nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Go for it. Good luck.

Poppy1969 · 24/09/2010 21:29

I will be 41 when baby is born in November....

As Blu says, I would't recommend waiting this long on purpose but circumstances were not right for me before. So far so good,I also got pregnant very quickly and have had a straightforward pregnancy apart from recent borderline gestational diabetes being diagnosed (not age related). I can honestly say that I feel happier and healthier than I have for years and no one I have seen for appointments has even mentioned my age.

So go for it I say!

hellymelly · 24/09/2010 21:32

41,wish it had been a decade earlier tbh.I have two daughters, but I would have liked more.ife however didn't pan out that way.

hester · 24/09/2010 21:33
  1. Another one here who wouldn't recommend leaving it so late, but I wouldn't NOT have a baby because it either.

Best thing I ever did, btw. As was adopting dd2 (and I'm even older now!)

MimsyRogers · 24/09/2010 21:35

28 for first, 38 for 3rd and final.

34 is a great age to have your first baby. Good luck

DiscoDaisy · 24/09/2010 21:37
