Scan question?

Hi
Is it still normal practice to have a 12 week scan now or does it really just depend on where you live? I had one with dd but have been told that 12 weeks scans are no longer offered unless there is a specific problem which requires a scan.

TIA XX

I had 12 week routine scan with DD now 6 1/2 and DS now 3.5, we are in Hackney. Don't know if it varies depending on where you live.

mumtosomeone · 05/09/2005 17:33

I didnt have one with my first 3 but did with last 2..different hospital!

Moomin · 05/09/2005 17:35

It definitely depends where you live. We have them at 12 and 20 wks regardless of any problems. If your authority doesn't offer one, I'd recommend going private if you can afford it (they're about £100-£150), just for peace of mind. Seems very unfair for you.

QueenOfQuotes · 05/09/2005 17:36

I had 2 scans with DS2 (Kettering)

but only had the 20 week on with DS1 (Bedford)

mind you that could have had something to do with the fact we didn't arrive in the UK until I was 16 weeks pg

vickitiredmum · 05/09/2005 17:38

12 week scan is usually just done for dating purposes - it does depend on the hospital though. Ours does 12 weeks and 20 weeks.

Mandymoo · 05/09/2005 17:38

Thanks - I'm in Cornwall and definitely think we get 12 weeks scans (well i did with dd and that was only 3 yrs ago!)

I'm just very impatient and want to know everything is ok (currently only 6/7 weeks pregnant) so i think i would pay anyway.

Thanks X

personally I wouldnt pay out for a 12 week scan..its only really to check dates..the money could be better spent!!!

sweetkitty · 05/09/2005 17:41

had 2 scans 12 and 23 weeks in London

have had 2 in Scotland as well 12 and 21 weeks, 12 week scan in Scotland is to confirm a heartbeat and check dates (thats what they told me)

coppertop · 05/09/2005 17:43

Yes 12-week scans are offered here in Cambs. I've got mine on Thursday.

i'm pretty certain that it depends on where you live. e.g i live in Reading and they don't but just up the road in Slough they do!

often though hospitals that don't do 12 wek scans will scan earlier than 20 weeks if there is a problem e.g no idea of dates etc

MrsCurly · 05/09/2005 21:34

It completely depends where you live. Here in Glasgow we just get a 12 week scan, so I've never known the sex of my babies.

expatinscotland · 05/09/2005 21:36

In Edinburgh/Lothians, we get one scan at around 12 weeks and that's it. If you need an emergency one, they won't tell you the sex. And there has to be a real reason to get another one. I had one b/c the midwife couldn't find the heartbeat w/the doppler.

spacecadet · 05/09/2005 21:37

im in cambs, and both hospitals in my catchment area offer 12 and 20 week scans.

starlover · 05/09/2005 21:38

i had a 12 week scan and a 20 week one

i live in sussex and it is routine here to have 2

starlover · 05/09/2005 21:39

oh and it isn't just to check dates... because i had already had a scan at 6 weeks which did that!

i was tol dit was to check heartbeat and to make sure baby is ok

KateF · 05/09/2005 21:39

I had dds 1 and 2 in Watford and dd3 in Aylesbury. Both only routinely offered 20 week scans. I was offered early one with dd1 because had previously miscarried and had emergency one at 14 weeks with dd3 because of bleeding.

lucykate · 05/09/2005 22:28

in lancashire, you get a 12wk, and 20wk automatically, plus at the hospital i used, in ormskirk, there is a very good early pregnancy assessment unit. i have a history of bleeding in pregnancy, and miscarriages, so have had, on average, 6 scans with each one. in some areas, i doubt i would have been able to have had so many.

its a shame, because i think that to potential parents, the 12 wk scan is the most reassuring as its pre movement/bump showing etc..

coppertop · 05/09/2005 22:35

Thanks, Mandymoo.

mumtosomeone · 05/09/2005 22:37

cant midwife hear heartbeat?

seb1 · 05/09/2005 22:53

12 week dating scan, I think its used for dates for later blood checks, 18 week anomaly scan to check for spina bifada etc.

nervousmum2be · 06/09/2005 10:33

Where i am (within East Kent Hospitals trust), we get a 14 week scan and a 20 week scan as routine. They do one at 12 weeks instead of the 14 weeks if you want the nuchal fold test. I also had an axtra one at nearly 10 weeks purely as a dating scan, but unlike some hospitals, i still got my 14 week one as well, which was very reassuring.

starlover · 06/09/2005 17:03

when i had my 12 week one they measured nuchal fold, length of baby, head circumference and other stuff.
i had already had a dating scan so it can't have been for that!
