At 20 week scan left renal pelvis was 6mm, so was sent for follow up at 32 weeks which I have had today and it is now measuring 14mm.

Anyone else had this?

Yes with pretty similar measurements and the same kidney! DS1 was on prophylactic antibiotics for 6 weeks after birth. He then had a test where they put a tube up the urethra and scan whether there is reflux in the kidney - there wasn't in his case. However the dilation did not go down until he was about 18 months old, we went for several follow up appointments.

He was and is absolutely fine and were it not for the antenatal scans we would not have known there was a 'problem'.

HTH after my second scan showed increased dilation I was referred to a specialist midwife who gave me more info, have they done this for you?

Glad your little man okay now.

They weren't very helpful at all really, the consultant I saw said she would refer me to Paediatrician (sp?) and I would be re scanned in 2 weeks and told to make that appointment before I left, scanning department refused to make appointment saying I didn't need rescan, so went back to antenatal and another consultant said no just come in 2 weeks and they will see if I need another scan then Confused.
Didn't tell me anything about what happens after birth, apart from if it is blockage then he will have to be operated on in Manchester.

Maybe I will get more information in 2 weeks, just seems like a lifetime away now.

Hi Nunnie

I can sympathise with you; I am 38 weeks (C section booked for next Friday due to two previous sections) and renal bilateral pyelectasis was detected at my 20 week scan. 9.8mm in the right kidney and 7.4mm in the left kidney. I had a follow up scan at 34 weeks which showed 10.9mm in the right kidney and 5.9mm in the left kidney. I have a paediatrician assigned and have been advised baby will need a scan shortly after birth and will be put on anti-biotics. I am sure all will be fine. The scary time for me was after my 20 week scan when I googled the diagnosis and found it was a soft marker for downs, I have put this to the back of my mind as my nuchal fold and bloods gave a 1:6600 risk.

Hope everything works out ok.

Nunnie have a look at http://www.neonatal.org.uk/documents/3645.pdf this leaflet I think this is the one they gave me. Obviously if you are in a different area there are different protocols. I wasn't rescanned (well not for that) after 32 weeks (DS' measurement was 13mm at 32 weeks iirc).

The test they did after he was born was called a micturating cystogram. It was not painful but I think quite annoying for him. He was seen by the paed at 6 weeks but I'm afraid I can't remember when they did the cystogram thing, he was quite small. I think the cystogram is quite definitive, they either see a blockage or reflux or not iyswim.

Thank you Owlingate and spottyslippers, funny how I have got more info off here than I did from my Consultant.
