Why is the pregnant stomach soooo hungry and only settled by stodge??

Seriously....I have to eat every 2 hours just to keep my stomach reasonably settled and a nice salad will not touch the sides...it needs to be stodgy comfort food before stomach even stops protesting...

What is scientific reason behind this, given that we are not s'posed to be eating for two blah blah

No scientific reason here, I just know that nothing will satisfy my belly unless it is full of fat. My first pregnancy all I wanted was KFC and McDs. This time I eat at least a snickers a day.

I put it down to a need to put on fat reserves or something...

PussinJimmyChoos · 30/08/2010 17:28

I could go along with that if I was a size 6 to start with but am a padded size 16...have enough fat reserves for a third world country

BTW my last pregnancy in France, I was advised to eat 'an apple a day extra' and not to put on more than 10kg. Didn't really follow that advice...

MrsFC · 30/08/2010 17:42

I know what you mean - in my first trimester I was all about white carbs - nothing else would do - except maybe a banana on a good day...! It was so disheartening, especially when someone asked at 11 weeks if I had 'any news' as my bum had grown... I could handle getting fatter round my middle - but my bum? Honestly - I came home & cried & cried - I wanted to stop eating, but literally couldn't! I was taking a sandwich box to bed with me as I would wake up starving at 4am!

But it's settled now I'm in my second trimester & I'm eating more normally. Unfortunately - I think the damage is done - my already podgy size 16 bum & thighs are now an 18... I'm hoping the rest goes on my tummy & nowhere else. I'm also trying to walk more now I'm not to tired.

Oh. Just realised I have not answered your question at all - sorry - blame the pregnancy brain Grin!

I have no idea why - but it does stop....

Congrats on your pregnancy!

I was the same in the first trimester, I was starving after 2 hours and had to just eat stodge.

Now I'm 31 weeks and barely eat anything like I did. I think my portions are actually smaller than when I fell pregnant!

sarahscot · 30/08/2010 18:09

I'm the same. Am 12+2 and since about 6 weeks I only want to eat sandwiches, creamy pasty, cheese toasties, chips, McDs, chocolate, icecream. I have put on about 8lbs already! Can't wear my usual size 12s already, and the 14s have to have the button out by the end of the day!!! Not looking good!

sarahscot · 30/08/2010 18:10

that should've read 'creamy pasta', but thinking about it, a pasty would be nice right now . . .

sloathy · 30/08/2010 18:32

Thank God I'm not the only one. I'm 6 weeks pg and after years of being brainwashed that carbs are "bad" I'm finding it really counter intuitive to stuff myself with them every two hours but it really is the only way for me to not faint or be sick. I tried to go without breakfast the other day and had a fainting fit on the train to work and had to come home again. Since then something with either carbs or cheese or both is the only thing that works. I feel guilty about not eating more healthily but my sister (who has two DC) probably rightly says that I can worry about eating better in the 2nd trimester. At this stage whatever works and makes you feel better is fine!

What with the carb inducted jelly belly and out of control breasts I am bursting out of my usual clothes already!

ReshapeWhileDamp · 30/08/2010 18:46

I think it's normal and healthy to follow your body's lead and eat what you're feeling the need to eat. (Clearly, if your body is urging you towards nothing but lardy cake, crips and voddy, then you need to have a little chat with it!)

I am well into my second trimester (23 wks) and still eating a lot. I do find that I can't eat a full meal at the end of the day though - not enough room in there! Little and often is good and often what you need when you're feeling queasy. Don't worry if it's mostly carbs - if it settles your stomach, that's what you need. Unless you're getting worryingly overweight, I'd not beat yourself up about this.

Applemuncher · 30/08/2010 19:13

I'm with you guys!!! I have pizza and chips in the oven as we speak....anything else will just make me gag!!

PussinJimmyChoos · 30/08/2010 20:07

Lovely to know am not the only one!!

Am coming up to 10 weeks this week so am really really hoping it starts to tail off a bit as I am tired of constantly eating!

Don't you find the hunger is so fierce as well?? One minute I feel a few hunger pangs and the next am in the kitchen, gagging and pawing through the fridge for something to settle it!

It's because you like food Grin

HTH Wink

PussinJimmyChoos · 30/08/2010 20:15

WMMC - nope! I have no interest in food...am only eating to settle the stomach and all my favourites (of which there is a lot, I will admit to that Grin ) do not appeal at all!!!

I am 5+3, so no excuses really, as I am hardly pregnant, but last night we had little food as the shopping will be delivered tomorrow. I did not fancy anything we had at all, so I ate a bar of jelly cubes straight out of the packet Blush.
All day long I had eaten nothing but slices of white toast with half a pound of butter and marmite for breakfast, lunch and supper!
I normally eat really healthily but not at the moment, especially if i let myself get too hungry!
I will regret it in May when i have 5 stone or summat to lose though!

whomovedmychocolate · 30/08/2010 20:46

Drink really cold water - it settles your stomach as effectively and does not widen your backside Wink

PussinJimmyChoos · 30/08/2010 20:50

Really??

Daisy17 · 30/08/2010 20:50

Absolutely empathise with you all on here - for me it seems to be flapjack and biscuits and white toast with loads of butter which I normally hate! The most annoying thing is that when I have eaten, I feel queasy all over again. Re the queasiness, a friend of mine recommended Fruit Rennies which I have found to really help - at least to stave off more eating for a little while longer! Invaluable the last week when have been on a course and couldn't just eat when I wanted to.

whomovedmychocolate · 30/08/2010 20:52

Really :)

PussinJimmyChoos · 30/08/2010 20:55

Arse...no ice cube bags...will put water bottle in the fridge overnight and try that - am at the desperate stage!

I can not stoping thinking about food!

tummytickler · 30/08/2010 21:09

mmmm - ice pops Grin

whatnolooroll · 30/08/2010 21:14

Same here but I could sort of justify having 4 large meals a day because I was bringing 2 of them back up again (lovely). I'm 20 weeks now and have almost stopped being sick but still starving all the time.

Really cold water just made me vomit so it may not be a perfect solution.

Chelle1986 · 31/08/2010 08:49

Completely the opposite here - never know what I want and when I do decide and get it - I don't want it.... Confused

Stodge makes me feel pretty poo to be honest and my DP reckons I'm eating a hell of a lot less than before I was pregnant....hence hardly any weght gain, what I have put on appears to be all baby!

I get a craving for the odd Big Mac..... Blush ..... but appart from that its been banana flavoured milkshake and fresh fish with mashed potato for me...

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 31/08/2010 08:57

Stodge all the way here too, I'm 10+3. I've gone right off wholemeal bread and I gag when I try and eat broccoli.

White toast with marmite
White bread cheese and tomato sandwiches
Pasta
Jacket potatoes
Crisps
Haribo Blush

These are my staple diet currently.

I'm alright if someone else cooks a meal, for example yesterday we went to a BBQ and because I hadn't had to do any of the prep I managed to eat nice salads, chicken and veg kebabs, pork medallions etc. It was lovely! Problem is that if I try and cook anything, or even prep a proper salad I feel so sick that then I can't eat it and have to have toast instead. Bleugh.

PussinJimmyChoos · 31/08/2010 09:18

Baba - am with you there! I love salads and healthy stuff but cannot prepare any of it. If it was put in front of me all ready though, I could manage it

People look at me as if I'm nuts when I say well I can't prepare it, makes me feel sick and say 'well its only a salad'....

I lived in the kitchen before was preg as love cooking...now I just pop in, grab whatever doesn't make me green, shut the fridge very quickly before I gag, don't go near the bin and then go back out again...its kind of like a pregnant hurdle course of the kitchen and I complete it in record time! Grin
