Sex of the baby in Amnio report?!

Hi there

I had an amnio 8 weeks ago and asked not to be told the sex of the baby.
Yesterday I had my 25 week appointment with the Midwife and she stuck a whole load of things into my maternity folder and at one point asked me 'are you the lady who wanted the sex in a sealed envelope' to which I answered 'no way - I would be so curious and I really don't want to know'.

Anyhow - I just took a look in the folder to see what bloodtest bits she'd stuck in and there's an envelope in there with the full Amnio report (which I have never seen - I have just been told that all is ok) and there's a wopping big sticker on it saying 'please be aware that the sex of the baby is included in this report'!!!!!

I really really don't want to know but I would like to read the amnio report.

Are they supposed to have stuck this in?! I'm really confused.

They are supposed to put copies of the results of all tests in your carried notes.

hrrmmph - so now I have to resist opening and does this mean I can't see the full report without seeing the sex!?

I wish they had told me this, it's a shame they can't produce a report without the sex on it and stick that in instead!

I will have to keep this hidden from my DH as he really wants to know. I thought that once we got past the 20 weeks scan there would be no way of knowing until the birth.

Yeah - I will give it to my mum I think, but I still really want to read teh full report as both times they told me the results (preliminary and full) they just spoke to my husband and said they came back normal.

I really don't want to find out the sex so yes it matters to me. I want to find out on the day when the baby is handed to me :)

Not every woman has an amnio so not everyone does have the sex of the baby in their notes.

I think with amnio it's part of the test they assess gender isn't it.

They have to put the results in to cover themselves, if you are taken sick elsewhere and what not, it helps the people looking after you to see what tests you had, what the results were etc so they know what has been ruled out.

Personally I'd leave them in as they have been put there for a reason.

Next time you're at the dr or mw can't you ask them to put a sticker over the gender?

Only if you have an amnio DF not every hopsital will even tell you if you request to know. ((I'm jealous I had to pay like 90 quid i think)) If you def don't want to know though don't get your mother to read the notes to you get a med professional to do it, mum is bound to refer to the baby as he or she. .

seriously don't want to know though Grin. Well... a little bit of me wants to prove my DH wrong as he is convinced it's a boy and won't shut up about it but it may well be a boy anyway. he he.

The way medical professionals report amnio results is by firstly stating the genetic makeup of the baby - eg 46 XX (for a girl) or 46 XY (for a boy). 46 refers to the total normal number of chromosomes. If normal it then states that the baby isn't affected by Down's/Edward's/Patau's syndrome or any other tested conditions. If they didn't put the XX/XY bit in the test result would be incomplete, as it is part of the test. If they told you it was normal there won't be any hidden information in the report that you haven't been told - I read amnio and genetic reports frequently in my work and they're always a lot shorter than you'd imagine!

Oh, I know where you're coming from in terms of not wanting to know the sex, I was the same.

I'm glad the amnio results were good though, that's great news.

I'd have read it in the corridor on the way home! But I'm another one who paid through the nose to find out. Couldn't imagine not wanting to know. :)

It wasn't put in my notes after the CVS. The report just says that the full complement of chromosomes is present.... doesn't actually mention the karyotype.

If it was I couldn't stand the temptation. Smile

My amnio result is very much NOT worth reading. It tells me nothing more than I already know so I wouldn't be too worried about missing out on some vital pieces of information by not reading it until after the birth.
Alternatively, do what someone else said and ask someone to put a sticker over the sex or to photocopy you a new page, with the sex blacked out or covered over and replace the page in your notes.

If you know your amnio was clear you don't need to read the report - mine was all totally scientific gobbledeegook about karotypes etc. It won't make sense to you unless you are a medic or a scientist and it won't tell you any information that you don't already know - just don't look at it!!!

This happened to my SIL except they left the gender results paper clipped to the front of her notes Shock so she couldn't avoid seeing 'male chromosome present' when she looked at them!

Is there anything that the amnio could pick up that's incompatible with life that couldn't be spotted at the 20 week scan and knock on tests that occur if they spot something does anyone know?

yes they amnio can tell you things you don't get confirmed from a 20 week scan. They do a full chromosomal analysis which is definitive on whether there are any genetic disorders which have a chromosomal abnormality. They can see "soft markers" of some of these disorders at scans but the only way to be sure is to have an amnio. If you are at 20 weeks you are too late to have one.
