Sex of the baby in Amnio report?!

Hi there

I had an amnio 8 weeks ago and asked not to be told the sex of the baby.
Yesterday I had my 25 week appointment with the Midwife and she stuck a whole load of things into my maternity folder and at one point asked me 'are you the lady who wanted the sex in a sealed envelope' to which I answered 'no way - I would be so curious and I really don't want to know'.

Anyhow - I just took a look in the folder to see what bloodtest bits she'd stuck in and there's an envelope in there with the full Amnio report (which I have never seen - I have just been told that all is ok) and there's a wopping big sticker on it saying 'please be aware that the sex of the baby is included in this report'!!!!!

I really really don't want to know but I would like to read the amnio report.

Are they supposed to have stuck this in?! I'm really confused.

oh really - i thought you could have an amnio up to 22 weeks ish.

Which chromosome disorders can an amnio pick up and which ones are incompatible with life?

You can have amnios much later than that - I have heard of them being done at 34-36 weeks.

That's good news that the amnio was good! But I agree, very annoying that you now have this tempting bit of paper. I'd want to read the report too, even if I knew the results. I like reading my own notes, dammit! Smile

It's not enough to put a sticker over, the sex is still there and you know you could peel the sticker off. Could you get someone to photocopy the report and keep it safe for you and then actually cut out the bit about the sex? (I know this is going to sound extreme, but anything else means the sex is just covered up and can still be discovered.)

why on earth would you have an amnio at 36 weeks???
The baby is fully developed and viable then.

An amnio can provide a diagnosis. Someone might have no intention to terminate, but still wish to know if the baby has a particular condition, and a later amnio can be safer for the baby.

It would also be possible to terminate even in late pregnancy if there is a severe enough problem.

Amnios are also used to check lung maturity.

I was told I could have an amnio at 36 weeks. I think the reason they offer is so that parents can prepare themselves for having a child with chromosonal abnormality but not have to worry about the risk of miscarriage because if labour starts then the baby is very likely to survive at 36 weeks.
