Hello!

I found out last week I was pregnant, and although I've not been to my GP yet, various websites and Miriam Stoppard have told me I'm due on March 31st/April 1st! (poor little april fools baby - let's hope it's late...).

I know it's early days, but wanted to start this thread as I've already got lots of questions - like, is anyone else having quite bad pains? I've been getting bad period-type pains, which have been worrying me, but I understand people do get (this is my first pregnancy by the way!).

Right, that's it - hope I get some company soon..!

If u only got your LH on day 16 then ov would be day 17 even into day 18, you could be a whole week out. The hospital told me they ususally allow about a week for peoples diff cycles. V optimistic for you.xx

bunny2 · 03/09/2003 20:43

Splash, I always over-estimate how pg I am, its v. easy to do. The fact that the sac is in place is a good sign. I know how awful the wait is going to be for you. I am counting off the days till by nuchal.

snitch1 · 03/09/2003 20:54

hi all hope everything is going well for you! sorry to confuse you i got bored of the old name Holistix6!!!!
well i am now on my 9th week and i have still been really ill sick night and day actually i am surprised i am awake at this late hour ha ha. I have a date for my first scan which is the 22nd of sept cant wait to see it.Does anyone know if the body is getting enough folic acid if you keep being sick?

Lilysmum · 04/09/2003 08:27

Bunny,

I can't believe how unhelpful your local NHS policy is. Since you are having no symptoms perhaps my experience might be reassuring?

As you know I've had no symptoms either - and this is very different from my previous pregnancy when I would chunder night and day and even lost weight during the first trimester. I've been totally convinced that this pregnancy is not progressing normally, however yesterday I had an early scan at 7 weeks and 2 days (I'm blessed with a sympathetic GP) and the baby is developing normally. So everything is fine despite no symptoms at all (except perhaps for tiredness)

It really is possible to have a symptom free pregnancy.....

So sorry that your local health service won't offer you a reassuring early scan - the variability in practice is really unfair.

Lilysmum · 04/09/2003 08:36

Splash,

Good luck with your next scan. Quackers seems to know what she's talking about and given your long menstrual cycle, as she said, you are probably not as far a long as you thought.

Pleased you are feeling sick ! (lol)

bunny2 · 04/09/2003 18:46

Lilysmum, thans you for your reassurance. It makes me feel better. . I am having shooting pains across the top of my ribs, dont know if they are pg related.

hewlettsdaughter · 04/09/2003 19:26

I'm sure they are bunny2
Splash - sorry to hear your scan didn't show you as much as you would like - glad you felt better after talking to the midwife etc though.

CP · 04/09/2003 20:08

Can I join in too? Due on 1 April and feeling queesy right now so just running downstairs for a bite to eat. Congratulations to all and take care.

Fennel · 04/09/2003 20:20

Hi again

Thanks for all the congratulations - it's great to have pregnancy buddies, welcome to CP too.

I feel sick and then hungry and then sick. Ugh. I really wanted a 3rd baby but it's such hard work being pregnant.

Good luck to all the people with early scans. We don't get them here til 13 weeks.

hewlettsdaughter · 05/09/2003 13:07

Welcome CP! Fennel, not sure that we get them before 20 weeks, unless things have changed in the last 4/5 years.
Got a bad headache today, and had one yesterday. Anyone else getting these?

bunny2 · 05/09/2003 22:25

CP, that's my 38th birthday!

Fennel, that is exactly what I have been like for the last couple of days. Yesterday late morning I was so hungry I felt sick. So I ate 3 toasted crumpets with humous, 2 wedges of bread and butter, spoonfuls of lemon curd, a nutrigrain bar and a kitkat. Guess what? I felt sick. Then I had to lie on the floor till the nausea passed and about half an hour later I was nauseous with hunger again! I'll have to be lifted to hospital by a crane if I carry on like that.

quackers · 06/09/2003 21:23

HD don;t worry, I had a head ache almost every day in ealry pg with all of my pgc's. I would just take a paracetemol without caffeine(boots own - fab) if it got really bad.

bunny2 · 06/09/2003 21:46

HD, soory, I meant to reply yesterday. Yes, I have been getting headaches which is v. rare for me. They are not bad enough to need pain killers but they are definately quite regular. It's to do with the hormones according to my book. Also, I have thrush, apparently common in pg.

hewlettsdaughter · 06/09/2003 22:02

Thanks quackers and bunny2. I've been trying to avoid painkillers but I guess I'll have paracetemol if necessary. Bunny2, what book are you using? I'm currently after a decent book (had Miriam Stoppard when I was pregnant with ds but gave that away and would prefer something else).

bunny2 · 07/09/2003 17:37

I have a Miriam Stoppard and "What to expect when you're expecting" which is quite good but a bit unrealistic i.e. for 9 months everytime you eat something you must ask yourself "is this the best possible thing I could eat for my baby", sorry but I want chocolate for me not my baby and I would choose it over some carrot sticks anytime.
I also have Emma's diary, have you got your copy yet?

hewlettsdaughter · 07/09/2003 19:16

Hmm, I'm with you there. Some of these books are pretty patronising aren't they? I remember Emma's Diary from last time. What turned me off Miriam Stoppard was her description of, and explanation for, colic. Apparently it usually happens in the evening and could be due to tension in the house after a long day, and Daddy coming home and everything. Well, ds' colic could be 24h and maybe I was tense by the evening but that was because of the colic - it wasn't what caused it!
Am definitely feeling different now. Headaches have been pretty bad since Thursday

bluecow · 08/09/2003 12:23

I though the What To Expect book too American (how to choose your doctor etc!) and way unrealistic - cooking your own wholegrain muffins and all that!
My sickness has kicked in now (I'm 8+5). Love your diet description bunny2! I feel sick through hunger cos I don't really fancy anything and have taken to moping round the kitchen like I did with first pregnancy going 'I hate food'. Fruit's about the only thing I can tolerate (which normally I'm not bothered about).

dot1 · 08/09/2003 15:09

Hello everyone!

I love the Best Friend's guide to Pregnancy book (even though it's a bit American) -I read it alongside Miriam so there's a bit of a balance!

Was actually sick yesterday for the first time - kind of pleased (in a weird way) as I'd been worrying something was wrong, but also annoyed that the sickness decides to kick in at 11 weeks! But have been OK today, which is good. I'm also getting headaches - most mornings -which I've never had before, but they're not too bad - not bad enough to take painkillers, but make me feel like I've drank too much the night before (which of course I haven't!)

I've got my booking in appointment on Wednesday - very excited about this!! Also got a nuchal scan a week tomorrow which I'm looking forward to getting out of the way in terms of additional worries.

Anyway, hope everyone's doing OK!

Fennel · 08/09/2003 18:49

I haven't found a really good pregnancy book - I had Sheila Kitzinger for my first pregnancy, useful on symptoms and week-by-week what the foetus is doing but it's idealistic on childbirth etc ("think of a beautiful flower opening...." "many women liken the sensations in childbirth to an orgasm..." etc). Pah.

I liked Becoming a Mother, by Kate Mosse, it's women's experiences and feelings month by month rather than telling you what to do. This time I will just check things on Mumsnet now I've found it! Like I just found out from here what a Nuchal scan is - I'd been wondering that for a while! It seems I had them last 2 times without knowing the right name.

I also just read the thread on all the many things you can't eat. More and more things. What is left?
Off to eat some more. I am expanding fast.

emmagee · 08/09/2003 19:14

dot1 , i am due at the end of April and am REALLY suffering with all day morning sickness. I have been trawling the internet for advice and found some info that said that morning sicness peaks between 11-13 weeks and may wear off by 14 weeks, so perhaps yours is as bad as it's going to get now? I am only 8 weeks and the idea that it will get worse is not good!

bunny2 · 08/09/2003 21:43

Still no sickness, in fact I feel great which is a bit disconcerting. I do eat like a horse right now though, seem to put an awful lot away each day but that might just be that my self-control has vanished.

Apart from myself and Dot, is anyone else planning a nuchal scan?

bluecow · 09/09/2003 12:24

Nuchal scans are routine at my hospital - and they're very liberal with their scan images too. I think I've got 11 from the two scans I had with ds last year (and they were free!). I will have the scan this time too.

preggers · 09/09/2003 12:46

Hello everyone,

CP 1st April
holistix6/snitch1 8 april

preggers 20 April
hewlettsdaughter 22 April
mum2neve 23 April
bunny2 24 April
splash - around the 20 th???
emmagee - end of April

Have I missed anyone ? Apologies if I have ....

Feeling extremely tired these days, and have been falling into bed sometimes as early as 9pm on some night. Rather worryingly I have been already putting on weight and I'm sure my belly is expanding - mind you it was rather flabby to start with . After complaining of lack of symptoms I have been getting intermitent waves of nausea on some days, but I have noticed this tends to be if I haven't eaten for long periods, or drunk enough water. I also noticed that I can't eat huge meals anymore and prefer to have smaller snacks throughout the day. Still can't believe I am pg! I'm seeing the doc next week and going to ask for a scan at 12 wks to put my mind at rest. In our area they only give 1 scan at 20 wks which seems agees away.

dot1 · 09/09/2003 12:58

some places seem really mean with the scans - feels so important to have at least 1 at 12 weeks and 1 at 20 weeks - 20 weeks is too long to have to wait!

I'm glad I've booked to have the nuchal scan - just not sure whether to tell the NHS lot I'm seeing tomorrow - in case they don't let me have the NHS 12 week scan! (do you think I'm addicted to scans?!). dp thinks I'm barking mad to want both, but any opportunity to have a look at baby..!

What do other people think - should I confess?!

OP posts:
bluecow · 09/09/2003 14:49

Dot1 - scan to you heart's content, baby! Don't tell one lot about the other lot's scans, that's what I say. Well done preggers for that list - I'm gonna print it off. Sorry you don't get a 12 week scan - why are some hospitals so mean? I am definitely expanding fast (8 weeks + 6) but then I was considerably flabby after birth of ds last October. Luckily dh thinks my huge tum is all baby (can't hold it in now I'm pg like I do normally!).
I also find I get more sick if I haven't eaten, though it's hard cos I'm feeling sick. I try to eat brekkie as soon as I can which seems to stave off nausea for a bit and I also find I can't face big meals but pick at stuff during the day. Apples are one thing which I can eat a lot of at the mo - and I don't usually care for them that much!
