Hello!

I found out last week I was pregnant, and although I've not been to my GP yet, various websites and Miriam Stoppard have told me I'm due on March 31st/April 1st! (poor little april fools baby - let's hope it's late...).

I know it's early days, but wanted to start this thread as I've already got lots of questions - like, is anyone else having quite bad pains? I've been getting bad period-type pains, which have been worrying me, but I understand people do get (this is my first pregnancy by the way!).

Right, that's it - hope I get some company soon..!

ooh - very excited 'cos I felt baby kick my hand on my tummy this morning! Mind you, this was because my adrenalin was flowing because ds (2 next month) had climbed out of his cot and walked downstairs at 5.50am and was howling because no-one was there!

Exciting though that dp will be able to feel baby now!!

dot1 - i think it depends on where you have your scan and what sort of machines they have as to whether you have to drink water for a scan or not. With my first pg I had to drink water (nightmare as they were also running late), but for my nuchal scan with this pg, I didn't have to - which was nice. I do believe they tell you anyway on the letter for the scan appt whether you have to drink water or not

Hi Debbie and Udar!

Well,it's my 40th birthday tomorrow and I'm in bed with flu. Great timing. Luckily it hadn't quite kicked in on Saturday night as I walked into a local restaurant expecting a quiet meal with dh and he had arranged a surprise party with 15 of my dearest friends from all over the UK there. I was gobsmacked. No wonder no one had been in contact with me for weeks! Still, quite amazed by the whole evening which was just fab, but now holed up in bed with the lurgy. Have taken a few paracetamol but of course there's not much else you can take when you're poorly and pg is there? Poor baby (18 weeks tomorrow) must be sick of me coughing!

udar · 11/11/2003 20:37

I too have been in bed with the cold/flu. Suffered through since Thursday with nothing but my own misery. Went to the Dr this morning and they had prescribed me antibiotics and rest for the rest of the week. As for the Udar (which means bump in Russian) it has been kicking like a trooper all weekend. Anyone would think it was playing the world cup rugby.
The 20wk scan on Monday was all clear although Udar was not behaving and wouldn't keep still for the poor scan lady. Never got a letter about how much water to drink or what to do beforehand. Just didn't go to the loo for about an hour before the appt and drank a bit of water in the waiting area. Noone sent me away.
Happy Birthday for tomorrow bluecow!

dot1 · 12/11/2003 14:48

Happy Birthday Bluecow!! Hope you're feeling a bit better..!

I'm so excited now about my scan on Tuesday - 9am - can't wait. Baby's kicking really strongly most of the time (it feels like!) which I'm really starting to enjoy - on the whole having a good day, which = not feeling nauseaus and therefore able to enjoy it all a bit more..!

HI all, good to hear your news. Think the cold is catching... I have a nasty one at the moment. Had an antenatal appointment last week at 16 weeks, heard the heartbeat - awwww

bluecow · 13/11/2003 19:16

OOh I hope none of you get what I've just had. Laid low from Saturday until today. Thanks for your congrats - despite the flu I had a lovely birthday. Dh gave me all sorts of lovely pressies so I am a very lucky girl. Baby probably glad I'm better too - must be sick of all my coughing swishing it about in there! Feel a bit ambivalent about being 40. S'pose it's nice to be 40 and pregnant though. I know I'm very fortunate.

bluecow · 17/11/2003 13:06

Where is everybody?!

hewlettsdaughter · 17/11/2003 19:06

Still suffering the cold from hell.... glad you had a good birthday despite it, bluecow

hewlettsdaughter · 17/11/2003 19:07

Oh, and good luck for scan tomorrow, dot1!

Fennel · 17/11/2003 20:38

Yes good luck for tomorrow Dot1.
hope the rest of you are feeling better now.

I'm just enjoying being past the yukky first trimester and not too huge to move about still, it's quite peaceful at this stage isn't it?

Told one of the women at work I was pregnant, she offered me commiserations! They all assume it must be an accident, being my 3rd. it seems a bit strange, I mean it's not that many really.

Udar are you Manchester based too?

Metrobaby · 17/11/2003 21:30

Fennel - how awful of the woman to offer commiserations. Peronally I admire you having 3 - I am getting nervous at the prospect at this second.

Good luck Dot1 for the scan - let us know how it went. Will you be finding out the sex of the baby?

Bluecow - glad to hear that you managed to enjoy your 40th despite the cold.

This week I've started feeling the baby kick away

Fennel · 18/11/2003 10:02

I was petrified at having one baby. Two seemed less scary and now I am stupidly confident/optimistic that 3 will be hardly more than 2. I guess in May or so I can start a thread "Why did noone warn me 3 was impossible?"!

My roommate at work had 10 children! 9 of them in 11 years. now that I find scary. she is a great source of information though.

bluecow · 18/11/2003 11:33

Fennel - I'd have been quite cross if someone says that to me. Mind you, I get the same reaction from most people when I tell them I'm pregnant again, which is along the lines of 'blimey that's a bit soon'...

Ds has just turned one and will be 18 months when new baby born so it's not ridiculouly close. But didn't want to wait given my age and all that and there's no right or wrong with age gaps, is there? Even if I waited two years I'd still have two young children!

Dot1 - hope scan was ok. Let us know as soon as you can.

Glad your birthday went well Bluecow. Hope the scan goes well Dot1.

Sorry haven't had a moment free at work after a week off sick. In answer to your question Fenel, I'm London based but born Kiwi. Feeling a lot better after a week off though and the baby has settled back down. Must have been distressed from my being sick as once I started feeling better the constant kicking and moving stopped.

I do have a question though - I don't seem to have been blessed with the thick hair and lovely skin that everybody talks about. Will that mean that I will still lose lots of hair at the other side even though it hasn't changed?

bluecow · 18/11/2003 15:27

Udar - I didn't lose any hair after ds was born last year and with both pregnancies my hair didn't change at all, if that's any help. My skin stayed the same too. People kept saying I looked well during my 1st pregnancy which made me laugh because I was sick as a dog until week 26!

Keep wanting to dye my hair (it's light red but I usually like it darker). I know they say hair dye is probably safe during pregnancy, but anyone got any views?

Fennel · 18/11/2003 16:38

Hair dying unsafe? that's one I never thought of. How about plant-based dyes from health food shops? or are they just as bad?

Udar what part of NZ are you from, we consider moving there, I've been quizzing Kiwis on another thread about that.

Bluecow I got that reaction - it's a bit soon - when I had DD2 17 months after DD1. It was quite good though, no jealously issues to deal with and now we're through with nappies etc (for the moment) while those who waited longer to have a second are still in the middle of it all.

bluecow · 18/11/2003 17:11

Fennel - yes I had thought of using veggie dyes - I'll investigate.
Funnily enough though some people do say it's a bit soon quite a few of the mums I know from ante natal classes are quite envious that I'm half way towards the next one!

dot1 · 19/11/2003 09:09

Hi all

The scan was fine yesterday, although baby refused to get into a good position for the photos! Don't know what the sex is - didn't ask (but kind of wanted to!). But I spent 5 hours at the hospital in total - tons and tons of waiting around, which was so frustrating, and I've got to go back for a Glucose Tolerance Test because of my PCOS, in about 3 weeks time.

So I came out feeling really fed up, and then felt quite ill all yesterday evening - probably from having such a tiring/waiting around day...

Don't know why but I've been really tearful the past few days - must be some more pregnancy hormones kicking in... But I know the main thing is that all's well - everyone that sees me says the baby's a good size (gulp), which is great.

Re: hair dying - I've heard that some people think you shouldn't do it, but I'm getting mine re-dyed in December!!

OP posts:
udar · 19/11/2003 15:58

Dot1 - it is funny that you say the baby wouldn't get in good positions for photos in the 20wk scan - neither would mine.
Fennel - I grew up on the south shores of Auckland and moved to the north shore after university. I have family in Nelson which is a fab place but is incredibly expensive at the moment due to so many people from overseas wanting to move there.
As for hair dying, I've heard mixed reviews on this - the hairdressers claim it is safe but they recommend doing a small hair test first as apparently hormones can alter the reaction of the dyes on your hair so what you normally have might not have the result you normally would. I for one will be having my highlights done in March so that I'm not looking too crap for all the photos and when will I get a chance to spend a couple of hours at the hairdresser again? I think I also may splurge and have a facial as well. I've heard rumours I'll have no time to myself afterwards.

bluecow · 21/11/2003 15:42

Bought a Jo Hansford Natural Titian hair dye in the end and used it this afternoon. Has not made a jot of difference to my hair so I guess that must be the colour I am. Wanted a more striking red for a party tonight (lucky me - workmates throwing one for my 40th. No chance of keeping my age quiet then!)

Dot1 - glad your baby doing ok and the right size and all!

Udar - when my ds was born I often got to read the papers; trouble is they were always at least 3 days out of date!

Metrobaby · 26/11/2003 08:52

Hi all,

How is everyone doing ??

Dot1 - I'm glad the scan went well for you. 5 hours is an incredibly long wait - no wonder you felt awful afterwards.

I am now in my maternity clothes full time so to speak. I've given up wearing trousers undone at the bottom. Yesterday I told my senior manager at work that I was pg and it went down surpringsly well. I'm especially happy as I have been allowed to direct a key project here until I leave on maternity leave. I've also tried to negiogiate a bit more maternity pay - here we only get the statutory minimum, so I'll be waiting for the outcome of that.

Our house is in a right state at the moment as we are decorating our spare room. I feel really guilty as in the evenings I can't help DH as I feel so tired.
