Hello!

I found out last week I was pregnant, and although I've not been to my GP yet, various websites and Miriam Stoppard have told me I'm due on March 31st/April 1st! (poor little april fools baby - let's hope it's late...).

I know it's early days, but wanted to start this thread as I've already got lots of questions - like, is anyone else having quite bad pains? I've been getting bad period-type pains, which have been worrying me, but I understand people do get (this is my first pregnancy by the way!).

Right, that's it - hope I get some company soon..!

Fennel - sorry to hear about your cat. It must be very upsetting for you all. How are your DDs taking it ?

Metrobaby · 31/10/2003 09:20

Incidentally I have a cat too and she was fine when I had my DD - despite having her big lack of her usual attention. She is very patient with DD and I have never known her ever to scratch or hiss at dd - even when dd is annoying her. You might find Fennel if you do want another cat they might be OK.

Dot1 - I haven't told anyone at work yet as I am trying to see if I can have my managers agree to me going on a training course first.

dot1 · 31/10/2003 11:17

good luck with getting on the course - although I'm sure you could do them for discrimination if they didn't let you go because of the pregnancy...

Fennel · 31/10/2003 20:39

Metrobaby how is your MIL situation? we haven't even told DP's parents yet that's how well we get on.

DD's aren't too bothered about the cat, I did tell DD1 (3.5 years) but I don't think they really understand, which is good really.

Cats were OK with our other babies but I found it hard never leaving cats in same room as baby when we all shared a bed normally - us, baby and cats, and you can't just leave a baby napping in a
room in case a cat sits on its face. Had to always search room for cats to evict or else move baby. or wrap baby's cot in a cat net. etc.

flipping heck - sick again this morning (the first time my morning sickness has been in the morning...). Is anyone else still chucking up or am I alone with my head in a toilet?! Can't believe I'm 19 weeks tomorrow and still doing this...!

Hey Bea - lots of love and hope you're OK!

(Sorry - message to another Mumsnetter who's probably on another thread but I know reads this one!)

oops got to go - at work and being called...

Fennel - sorry about your cat. How awful. However, as to having another girl (and I assume the amnio results were all ok in the end?), I've always thought there's something rather fabulous and quite clever when you have three kids or more to have all the same sex!

I've always wanted three kids but dh is adamant that 2 will be it. Given my age I think I'll be pushing my luck a bit to go for another one anyway. Perhaps we'll just get digs instead!

Heard baby's heartbeat on Thursday which was lovely. 20 weeks scan still a month away but can't wait to see baby again.

So Dot, if you do go for a third, is dp up for getting preggars again? Did she have an easier time than you seem to be having? I know it's no consulation but I was sick till week 26 last time. But in a funny way symptoms are quite reassuring though I'm sure that's the last thing going through your mind as you vomit...

I felt quite sick again on Saturday and so tired I didn't know what to do ith myself (I'm 16.5 weeks). I wonder if these occasional surges in the symptoms mean the baby's going through a growth phase or something?

bluecow · 03/11/2003 11:46

Consolation even - and dogs, not digs. Oh and with, not ith. Grief, I must read my posts more carefully.

dot1 · 03/11/2003 13:34

Yes, dp will be up for doing pregnancy no. 3. She had a fab pregnancy with ds - no symptoms at all - in fact it made her all kind of relaxed and happy the whole way through!

I've promised her I'm going to stop moaning about this pregnancy during the second half (because I know really how lucky I am that this has happened at all and I'm not really completely ungrateful!), but that gives me one more week of complaining!

Started knitting this baby's first blanket last night - I knitted ds about 5 - all on the blue spectrum (we didn't know he was a boy until he was born, but I just 'knew'...!). This time I went out and bought pink/purple wool, so if it's a boy we'll have to only use the blankets indoors!
Love knitting - feel like I'm doing something positive for the baby (other than growing it...).

OP posts:
bluecow · 03/11/2003 15:26

Aw how lovely - knitting blankets! Interesting you 'knew' you were having a son. Any vibes this time?

dot1 · 03/11/2003 15:41

not really - disappointingly! I re-read the pregnancy diary I kept when dp was pregnant, and even at 7 weeks I was talking about knowing it was a boy - it was weird that when they pulled him out (c-section!) and told us, I wasn't at all surprised - because I knew!

This time I've honestly got no idea. The way we conceived makes it more likely we're having a boy - because of the timing involved - inseminating at more or less the exact point of ovulation - but I really don't know..!

OP posts:
bluecow · 03/11/2003 17:20

Some days I'm convinced down to my boots that I'm having a girl. Other days not so sure. On the whole I 'feel' I'm having a girl. If I'm right I shall claim trimphantly it's women's intuition. If I'm wrong I shall say I wasn't sure! We had lots of bd'ing around ovulation time both times though this time I think as most of it before ovulation it may increase chances of a girl. Oh I dunno!

Fennel · 03/11/2003 21:01

Sorry you are still sick Dot, I would certainly feel entitled to moan if I was vomiting. I'm jealous though of you having a dp who can do pregnancy too. I would love to delegate this.

I'm having a positive week (for a change) despite hardly being able to move due to sudden dramatic backache. Making shortlists of girls names and looking forward to having 3 girls. And thinking we're nearly half way there...

Bluecow yes the amnio results were fine thanks. Not a nice experience overall but over now.

I was wondering what you meant about getting digs! I could only think of student rooms in 1950s language (what my parents called them).

bluecow · 04/11/2003 10:23

Fennel - I'm just a rubbish 2 finger typer and I never preview my messages which I should do! Glad the amnio's done with and all fine - what a relief. Three girls - how lovely!

dot1 · 05/11/2003 14:45

ooooh - can I just vent a bit of frustration?! Just phoned my hospital, 'cos the secretary said if I hadn't received an appointment by today I should phone. So I did, and I still haven't got one arranged... So I've been told tomorrow - apparently 'the poor consultant' has been very busy - what about the poor stressed Mum to be??!!!

Getting quite peed off now - I'm supposed to be being monitored quite carefully and it's been nearly 9 weeks since anyone saw me! And I'm nearly 20 weeks and haven't got a scan date...!

(can you tell the pregnancy hormones are making me tetchy - I'm not normally as bad as this, honest!).

Plan B is to cry all over my GP midwife when I see her on Friday, to see if she'll speed things up - at least she's seeing me then....

Ho hum. Hope everyone's OK. Baby didn't move much yesterday and I was starting to get concerned, but he/she's been kicking all over the place today so I'm quite pleased (kind of getting used to the feeling of it rolling around..!)

OP posts:
Fennel · 05/11/2003 15:29

Sorry to hear that Dot. Will you phone again tomorrow? if so try and be really firm and insist on a scan date and a consultant appointment (if you need the latter). Don't let the secretary put you off just insist it's urgent.

If that doesn't work I'll have to lend you my sister who can always get appointments sorted.
It's probably my fault for using up consultant's time at St Marys (that's where you're going isn't it?) in the last few weeks.

I haven't seen my local midwives yet I'm a bit worried they're so busy there will be noone free to actually deliver this baby.

dot1 · 05/11/2003 16:17

I forgot you're also up North Fennel! Is St Mary's good once you're actually in the system?

I remember for dp's labour/birth we went through 5 midwives in total..!

OP posts:
Fennel · 05/11/2003 17:22

Dot I don't usually use St Mary's though people say it's very good. I only went there for the CVS as my usual hospital doesn't do them. and then for the failed an then the successful amnio. The consultants I saw there were lovely, surprisingly cos I don't normally like consultants.
People go there for special care, triplets, and water births.

Debbiethemum · 06/11/2003 14:27

Hello, I'm expecting on April 20th.

Already have a ds who will be 2+11m when this one arrives. Very nervous about the birth as I had a horrible time with ds, but my consultant seems fantastic ( friend of a friend and we have met at a party before) and will see me again at 36 weeks and will do loads of checks so hopefully it will be straight forward and can decide on cs or water birth then.

We have told ds, but not sure he understands. Though he seemed pretty clued up at my dating scan, running from the screen to my tummy, when I was saying yes there is a baby in there. (Probably thinks I am giving birth to ET).

I surf a lot on this site but have decided I really must chat more

dot1 · 06/11/2003 14:38

Hello Debbiethemum!!

Fingers crossed all goes well for you with this labour. I know it's not at all the same, but watching dp go through a horrendous birth - started off wanting to be a water birth and ended up with cs - has made me more than a little nervous. Silly, 'cos it's me this time and could be perfectly straightforward, but seeing dp in all that pain.... not good..! I'm just fixing all my hopes on a good old epidural!!

Phoned St. Mary's again today and still no appointment (gggrrrrrr). The secretary was really rude to me and I really don't know what to do - want to make a complaint but I work in the NHS and know how hard it can be when stroppy patients (i.e. me!) phone up wanting appointments!!

Metrobaby · 06/11/2003 15:04

HI debbietheMum - they say the subsequent labours after the first are meant to be better - and shorter. I am clinging on to that hope anyway !

Dot1 - how frustrating for you. Perhaps just keep phoning and making a nuisance of yourself so that they hopefully they'll give you a scan date to stop the phone calls ??? Although its a shame that it has to come down to making a fuss in order to get something done. Will this be your first scan, or did you have one around 12 weeks?

Debbiethemum · 06/11/2003 15:26

Hi thanks for the reply's, last time was very like dot1's DP.

Planned for a lovely water birth, instead was induced - with no chance of an epidural, ended up with emergency c-section with GA because of sudden onset pre-eclampsia and poor old DH stranded in the corridor with ds and nobody telling him how I was.

So I am not going through that again. Hence appt with consultant at 36 weeks for blood tests & to see if there are any symptoms so can decide on cs with epidural or water birth (and nothing in between - there is no way I will let them induce me).

I only saw the consultant on Tuesday so it's still very much in my mind at the moment, most of the time I am not panicing or stressed out and loving trying to figure out if that was a kick or just wind!!!

There are also some friends over from Australia for three weeks so have dug out a load of vests and baby gro's for their baby who is 3 1/2 months - I'd completely forgotten how small (& light) they were. That has made me incredibly broody and I can't wait for April.

dot1 · 06/11/2003 15:34

Hi,

I did have my 12 week scan and all was fine - I'm more concerned that I haven't had a blood test in a while, and I may have to alter my medication depending on the results - don't want to be harming baby so would really like them to do a blood test! Also, I'm looking forward to the 20 week scan - can't wait to see baby again..!

I can't focus at all on actually having a baby - getting to the end of the pregnancy is where my brain stops!

OP posts:
udar · 06/11/2003 16:31

I have been using St Mary's and have found them really good so far - first pregnancy. I'm due my 20 weeks scan next week (a week early I think) but due to the postal strike I haven't got any instructions on what to do. Does anybody know what the rules are there - ie. do you have to drink 1 litre of water - how long before you go in for the scan can you pee etc.

Fennel · 06/11/2003 19:30

Welcome Debbiethemum and Udar.

I don't want to be all negative but second labours are NOT alway shorter than first ones! DD2 took a slow 25 hours, it wasn't that bad a birth ("natural" while DD1 was ventouse) but I was really disappointed as I'd thought it would be quicker and everyone kept saying how quick it would be. If I'd expected a long labour it would have been less traumatic.

Third time round I'm still dreading it and just assuming it'll be a long slow process.

dot1 · 10/11/2003 08:41

I seem to remember dp having to drink water for her 20 week scan, but it's all a bit hazy I'm afraid.

I've finally got my 20 week scan appointment + ante natal appt at St Mary's - next Tuesday, Nov. 19th. Also haven't had my letter yet, but hounded the secretary and at least got the date.

Still being sick - aarrgghhh! Am resigned to having sickness right through the pregnancy now, but at least I'm halfway through - hurrah!!
