I saw on another thread about BV causing MC.

I have been itching like mad for a while. Before I was pregnant. I am now 13 weeks.

I saw the doc and she prescribed thrush cream but it didn't work (I didn't use the pessary).

I'm due to go back to docs in a couple of weeks and was going to wait until then but now I'm panicking like mad. I'm really itchy and it does smell pretty strong but it does come and go.

What do I do?

I saw that thread and wondered what BV was! What is it?
Anyway I wouldn't panic, whatever you've got hasn't caused any problems so far and you've had it a few months! If your gp is not worried you shouldn't be. If you're going to fret you could go see your doc again this week though, rather than waiting a couple of weeks.

emmyloulou · 08/08/2010 13:31

Did your dr give you thrush treatment as possibly you have that as well?

Thrush is hugely common in pregnancy especially if you are on anti'b for the BV.

I have had loads of utis, so loads of anti'b's which caused really itchy thrush.

With thrush if you don't use the pessary the internal infection does not go.

Ive had BV on and off for a couple of years now, Hate it! Havent noticed it lately but now and 5 weeks preg so am going to book a swab just to make sure im all clear. Got a bit of thrush atm i think, waiting to ring the doc tomorrow tho to see if i can use Vagisil cream to soothe it as it says consult the doc first.

Gonna keep an eye on this thread :-)

MissCKitty · 08/08/2010 16:10

Saw that thread too and have had similar symptoms so am off to GP tomorrow to check it out. Have been worrying myself silly about it [confused}

JessieEssex · 08/08/2010 16:58

I was also worried about this, but my midwife told me that itching can be caused by an upset in your ph levels (cauwsed by pregnancy), which leaves the skin irritated and sore, and doesn't necessarily mean an infection. BV is quite a nasty infection, though quite common, and is accompanied by a really smelly discharge (sorry if TMI!). So if you're just itchy and have a non-smelly discharge it's probably just part and parcel of the delights of pregnancy! Always worth getting checked out if you're worried, but not worth fretting over.

DetectivePotato · 08/08/2010 17:50

As I said, I had this before I was pregnant and it does smell.

When I mentioned it to my GP she didn't want to do swabs etc as I was only about 5 weeks pregnant which is why she said to try the thrush cream first. I didn't use the pessary as the instructions said don't use the applicator if you are pregnant and I don't want to insert it myself.

Private it stands for bacterial vaginosis (sp?)

Although my doc mentioned it could be that but didn't seem concerned over the fact I was pregnant too so maybe I am over reacting

TMI alert: I'm in exact same position, have had a discharge on and off for quite a while, sometimes it smells (yeasty/fishy/beefy), sometimes doesn't really smell, seems to come out clear but dry yellowy.

I had this before I got pregnant, nurse swabbed me at my last smear test, tested for thrush but it was negative. I had vaginosis years before so think it may have been that again.

Still have it at the moment, seeing midwife tomorrow so definitely going to try and get something for it. Didn't realise it could cause mc - I too am a bit worried now but can let you know how I get on tomorrow?

DetectivePotato · 08/08/2010 18:17

That would be great hoola, hope it goes ok.

hoolabombshell · 08/08/2010 18:44

Forgot to say DP, I am just gone 13 weeks like you, that was the relevance of my post, duh! Of course will let you know how it goes :)

JessieEssex · 08/08/2010 19:02

Sorry, I didn't read the OP's post properly! I've been so nervy about this issue and was so relieved to hear that my situation was normal that I couldn't help but reply quickly. I hope you get it sorted out as it's not nice to be worrying about this (or anything!) during pregnancy. x

DetectivePotato · 08/08/2010 19:37

Thats ok Jessie I do the same when I am desperate to share my wisdom too. Smile

not sure if this helps but i recently discoved i had BV and used balance - activ gel. it can be used in Pregnancy although does tell you to check it is BV with GP to rule anything else out. Its fab and cleared up very soon, have had 3 treatments for thrush in last year, obviously wasn't!

DetectivePotato · 08/08/2010 21:25

Thanks for the info. I'm not itching again at the moment, it keeps coming and going thats why I can't make my mind up whether to go docs yet or wait.

dribbleface · 08/08/2010 21:27

Bv can come and go (according to little bit of research i did). Mine definaltey did. I would see Gp just to put your mind at rest, nothing worse than worrying

whomovedmychocolate · 08/08/2010 21:34

Not pregnant and just popped in to say that due to increased bloodflow, pressure on the veins in your fadge from the baby and increased perspiration, it is, in fact, quite normal to have an itchy fadge during pregnancy from time to time, especially during hot weather.

By all means get unusual itching checked out but you are not all freakish. It just happens. :)

hoolabombshell · 09/08/2010 23:10

Saw MW today who said thrush was to be expected in pregnancy, although I explained I didn't think it was thrush, but BV.

Although lovely, she didn't really seem concerned either way, just referred me to my GP/Nurse to get myself swabbed if I was concerned about it. Didn't get a stern warning that vaginosis may cause an mc or anything.

To be on safe side will make an appointment with GP this week.

MissCKitty · 09/08/2010 23:43

Actually went to my GP today about this instead of waiting to see midwife tomorrow as was stressing out. She did a swab and get the results on friday. She was v nice and said that it was quite common in pregnancy, especially with being a diabetic too, and didn't seem unduly concerned. So we'll see what happens next. If it is Bv she said that i'll just get a course of antibiotics and that'll be that. Feel a little less panicked now x

hoolabombshell · 10/08/2010 16:26

Glad you went and saw to it Kitty, would be great if you let us know how it goes.

MissCKitty · 10/08/2010 21:43

Thanx hoola will keep you posted x

DetectivePotato · 10/08/2010 22:22

Thanks for sharing hoola and kitty

Its only 2 weeks until I see the doc so I think I'll just wait then.

clarebear1 · 11/08/2010 16:53

Im going for a swab friday too as i regularly get it.

MissCKitty · 13/08/2010 19:20

Got my swab results today and got the all clear for BV, thrush and any other onfection. So I guess its just a weird pregnancy thing for me. Glad to know its nothing more serious tho. How are you other ladies getting on? x

hoolabombshell · 14/08/2010 10:38

Great news Kitty, glad to hear you've had the all clear. I have a nurse appointment first thing Tues morning, prob get results late next week, will let you know :)

DetectivePotato · 14/08/2010 19:37

Glad you got the all clear. I know mine isn't down to pregnancy as I had it before I conceived. Hoping it is down to me not using the pessary. Maybe I should give the applicator a try and not insert it too much. What do you reckon?

OP posts:
hoolabombshell · 24/08/2010 12:10

Called the docs for the results of my swab last week. Everything is normal, so no BV, no thrush. Which is great news, but I just can't get my head around the fact that I am getting all this discharge and it is just "normal"??

Well I will take their word for it and keep wearing my extra-large pantyliners every day (guess that's normal)!
