All boys. Pretty much done at 3. One persistent bed wetter which stopped abruptly at 6

Son, 4 years old. He's autistic. It was a struggle. He used a potty for poos until he was 8.
Daughter, 2 years on the dot. She potty trained herself in 3 days. I couldn't believe it after the hard work it was for my son and us!

Dd 25 months.
ds 29 months.

DS was 2 years 9 months - he got it within a week - and DD was 2 years 5 months - she took a couple of months to be consistent

Ds1 - aged 4y 1m (took 6 months and was a nightmare)
Ds2 - aged 4y 2m
Ds3 - aged 3y 10m
Ds4 - aged 4y 9m
Ds5 - aged 3y 10m

Younger 4 all went from being in nappies full time to pants and no accidents in about 2 weeks.

DS aged 3y3m. Did it in a fortnight including poos but not dry at night until age 7.
DD aged 2y11m. Did it in 3 days. Not confidently dry at night until age 6.

DS1 - 23 months, he was at nursery and he pretty much trained himself by following the other children!

DS2 - 3.5 years. He was a pain in the arse Grin. He wasn’t at nursery- I was a SAHM. I was convinced he’d go to school in nappies, thankfully he didn’t!

20 months and 18 months. Both girls. We were living overseas at the time and local
nurseries wouldn’t take children if they weren’t potty trained at 18 months. Still the case, and you get judged massively if your child is two and still in nappies. 12-18 months is the norm.

All 3 ( boys) were dry in the day by about 32 months, and dry at night by their 3rd birthday - we did a big thing of “once you’re 3, you won’t need night nappies any more” and stuck to it. There were very few accidents, I think we had a mattress protector for a little while just in case.
I remember the timings as they needed to be dry to start playgroup/ nursery at 30 months and they all missed that deadline by about 6-8 weeks!
This was a few decades ago- I know the school I’m at now has a lot of children starting nursery (so 3+) and even reception at 4+ still not toilet trained.

DS turned 2 at the end of the January and we potty trained that summer so we could dry clothes on the line/wear less layers etc so 2.5. This was dry day and night, never did pull ups etc

Thetreeisdownnow · 08/04/2026 00:11

DD- 19 months
DS- 21 months
DS- 2 years 2 months.

All in cloth nappies though and I used to put them on the potty from very small when I could see they were pooing (again to save on washing nappies) and so going to the potty was always just a part of their day.

Girl, we started in lockdown when she was 20 months, it seemed too good and opertunity to miss as we didn't know how long it would last. Quite a lot of accidents She always needed prompting though, I can't remember when we got out of that stage, years telling her to use the toilet.

Boy, 23 months we started. Thought we'd try it during half-term. He did really well. Different, more independent personality and we followed oh crap. He didn't like being prompted so we hardly did that. Took maybe a couple of months to be reliable. Poos were a bit of a pain. He had mild constipation, and using the potty did help a bit with that. He would not chose to sit on a potty when in nappys but wanted to be clean. If he was due a poo he'd have wee accidents. And he spent a few mornings running to and from from potty to toys when a poo was imminent. After a good poo he was really good with wees.

Day time - DS 2.5 years (thank you lockdown!), DD failed attempt at 2.5 years, finally took to it at 3 years.
Night time - DS 4 years, DD still trying at just over 4 years.

Meadowfinch · 16/04/2026 13:02

I was packing to go on holiday with ds who was 2y11m3w. I put in a pack of nappies. He took them out and said "no more nappies mummy".

And that was that. I did take a couple of spares hidden in my bag but he decided he wasn't wearing them anymore and he meant it. Classic ds - he decided !!

Thowaway · 16/04/2026 13:03

DD - just before her third birthday. Dry at night by 3.5.
DS - just after his third birthday (I had been starting to worry a little). Dry at night pretty much the second he was daytime trained.
