3.5 for both my boys we tried around 2.5 but there were so many accidents. We had no accidents at all at 3.5. We used pull us for a couple of days then pants. I would say when they are older they learn rather than are 'trained' they definitely understand better and are more open to rewards etc.

Ds1 was nearly 4 before he understood enough to train and he got it within 2 weeks but wasn't night dry till 9 (ASD & ADHD diagnosis)
Ds 2 was 2 years 10 months and got it within a week. He only had a couple of accidents within the next year and nothing since

SouthLondonMum22 · 10/07/2025 06:57

DS was 18 months.

Plan to do the same when twin DD's are 18 months too.

Soontobe60 · 10/07/2025 07:18

DD1 2 years exactly - her birthday fell in the Easter hols so she was able to go nappy-free as I was on holiday.
DD2 2 years 1 month - birthday at end of November, trained during Christmas hols.
Both DDs trained within a week with the odd night time accident.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/07/2025 07:23

DD 2y 4m - said "pants today" and just got on with it. Took a couple of days.

DD 2y 9m - Had a false start about a month earlier, but much more success second time. Took about 2 weeks.

Both did night and day, wees and poos at once.

SortingLaundry · 10/07/2025 10:21

Dd 2y 7m. Cracked it in 3/4 days but she’d also been dry at night for about 5 months, so she was ready. She only wore a night nappy for the 1st week.

Ds is 2y 5m and has been going on and off the potty himself for a wee the last couple of months, but still wearing pull ups. I’ve not actually been ‘training’ him , it’s more just so he can get used to the potty. Going to tackle it properly once school has broken up. He is also having more and more dry nights. I always thinks that’s a good sign to start potty training.

Ds - 2 years
Dd - 18 months

Both in washable nappies.

Sassybooklover · 10/07/2025 10:28

I tried unsuccessful from around 2.5 years old, and tore myself to shreds for being a failure as every parent I knew seemed to potty train their child at 2! My friend said to me, to stop, step back, he's clearly not ready and try again once he's older. My son was 3.5 years old - stayed in for a week, bypassed the potty and went straight to the toilet - he grasped it straight away!! One wee accident at preschool and that was it. Like everything, he did it in his own time, when he was ready!!

I have all boys, born in the 90s when we potty trained earlier. We stayed at home for a week and just got on with it, usually between 2 and two and a half. It was unusual for a child to still be in nappies at three.

My eldest was two years two months. I found him with his nappy off, trying to perch on the loo and decided to go for it. It took a couple of weeks.

Second one was two years and four months, it took about a week.

I left the youngest until two years six months and it only took a couple of days. We didn't bother with the potty, went straight to the loo with a child seat. He was dry at night a couple of days later, much earlier than his brothers.

YourWinter · 10/07/2025 10:55

DD was one year and eight months, DS was two years and eight months.

Three of my DGS have been reliably dry day and night by two and a half. The other is just four and wears nappy pants at night as occasionally he pees as he wakes.

30 years in childcare most are 30 to 36 months a few just after second birthday but took longer and lots of regression when things changed in their lives. The older ones got it in days and few accidents. It's the 4 year olds going into reception that are the real problem.

Kindergarten teacher here with the opposite experience, all the 2.5 and older ones struggle (even anyone over 2) and all the ones trained before 2 are great. My son was trained at 22 months showing no signs of readiness and got it in 3 days and has been great since, he’s now just over 2. My nephew trained at 19.5 months, took him a couple of weeks but he’s also been great and was done by 20 months.

Both mine, boy and a girl were 20mths. Both a couple of months longer for nighttime.

BlondieMuver · 19/07/2025 14:03

2 +3 months.
2 yr
3.5 yr
2 yr
2 + 10 months.
3.5 yr.

anikarice · 19/07/2025 14:03

both daughters were 2.5 son was 3 (he’s 3 and a half now and still wears a nappy at night because atleast once a week he will have an accident)

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 19/07/2025 14:06

All five, boys and girls, were potty trained by 2. There would be the odd accident, particularly from my middle DD, but in the main they were all reliably dry day and night by 2 years 4 months.

Thuraya17 · 19/07/2025 14:06

Just want to add, I think 20-22 months is the sweet spot!

Pinty · 19/07/2025 14:08

Probably around 3. Much later for night time dryness though

Shenmen · 19/07/2025 14:09

Are three were about 2 or just under. DD used nappies at night until she was 11. Potty trained in a day at her own choice, absolutely refused to wear nappies never had an accident. But at night never didn't wet the bed/use a nappy. Some hormonal thig apparently.she never had an accident since her first dry night!

elQuintoConyo · 19/07/2025 14:17

DS 2yrs8mo, had to be trained before starting pre-school (we're abroad). Luckily it was summer, so no problems with clean ups on tiled floor or he was in the garden. But he got it in a couple of days and was dry at night, too. Very quick, very fortunate.

We never lugged a potty around with us, honestly I've never seen anyone in Spain do that!

Obviously my 30 years of training an average of 4 children a year is totally different to your experience. But I've also found the early trainers are more likely to regress when they go through changes like siblings, school etc.
Children can already self dress and communicate so don't need to be bare, they don't need to spend weeks at home can ask for the toilet.

DeliaOwens · 19/07/2025 14:20

Twins, girl at 30 months (this is fully trained, no pull ups at night etc) and boy at 34 months. They all come to it at their own pace. For us, I think the boy was spurred on by fact that his twin got her very own character underwear…he just wanted some too.

TammyJones · 19/07/2025 14:21

Both 3 and a half ….both are adults with good degrees.
Makes absolutely no difference in the long run.

This is similar to my experience, I've found the earlier ones around 2-2.5 train easier.
The over 3s are harder going especially if parents want to wait for 'signs of readiness'.

Ds was dry in day at age 2 but completely dry at night at age 8 (I know, out of night nappies age 4 but would have accidents about twice a week - didn’t help we moved around a lot)
dd was always dry at night from about 16m and completely toilet trained just before she turned 2
