Potty Training During Lockdown!

So now seems like a better time than any and I've decided to potty train my 2yo dd during quarantine! I haven't potty trained for about 10 years and that was with my ds. I've bought her a potty a few weeks ago just to get her used to it but she's still not keen on sitting on it. Any tips please?

You got to act like you Trust your kids. Say to them “We know you can do it” etc etc. Every kid gets this. They know how to poo amd pee. All you are doing is teaching them a new grown up place to put it!

peanutandpumkin · 18/05/2020 14:45

@Minster2012 sorry to hear about the accidents, do hang in there. I honestly have no no idea but as PP said it sounds like a regression 🤞🏼 will get better tomorrow?

I know! This hiding candy thing looks like its working for wees, i just realised it today. I will see how i get on (big sigh) off the top of my head, i am thinking maybe you could place the potty in a reliable corner and keep a "magic box" nearby ? Or behind the potty?? You know at this point i am just brainstorming 🥴

Good luck! And i follow this thread faithfully and its keeping me sane 😘 i dont post much coz i have nothing NEW to add 😕

Hi all. I started a while back and have come back. I've done ec since 6 months and now at 22 months we are giving potty training or 'conpleting' a go
Take 2, not following the books and gone straight to pants as at least then the poo is more contained. Read a few books but making up my own rules too. Started after daughter becoming pretty reliably dry in her (cloth) nappy. Day one no accidents, poo in potty dry overnight. Day two one wee at the lunch table, two poo in pants, one in potty. Night two, potty wee when she woke for a drink, small poo accident after saying poo but not quite having enough time.

Hellohello2020 · 18/05/2020 16:01

Sorry, last night of my post is meant to say day 3.

Minster2012 · 18/05/2020 16:01

Thank you @peanutandpumkin I def will persevere & hope it keeps getting better. He just will not be told when to go though, I say let’s sit on potty before doing X, & he just says “no” & stamps feet 🤦🏼‍♀️

peanutandpumkin · 18/05/2020 16:07

I know @Minster2012 my DS is the same!! 🙄 we just had a massive wee through the pants and now hes bare bottom!! And back to prompting 😑

And they are soo strong physically and emotionally 😩

It seems unnecessary to go back in nappies as he seems to be getting it 🤭 (sometimes)

Minster2012 · 18/05/2020 16:46

@Hellohello2020 that sounds really promising! And night time too, my DS is 22 months on the 27th may and I thought about trying night /nap time but he drinks a lot & hasn’t been dry so think I will leave that to the future...plus I then told myself don’t be so ridiculous why would you do something that will likely upset his one nap (my peace) and sleeping during lockdown when I have him 24/7!! Nahhhhhh

@peanutandpumkin keep going! Stay strong he will get there. They are awfully strong willed which is why I’m keen to sort it before much older & especially as he started this whole thing!! 😂

Hellohello2020 · 18/05/2020 18:03

Minister, my child is weird and has been dry on some nights since she was a baby. She seems to save it up until she's awake then do a big wee, which is when I offered the potty. I'm on a cloth nappy advice page and most people have special super absorbent night nappys but a day one has always been fine for us. She's more reliable at night than day. Last summer when it was really hot I let her have a couple of day naps naked. But definitely do things for an easy life. That's what I've done keeping her in nappies until she's pretty clean.

Hellohello2020 · 18/05/2020 18:05

Also, I don't think she drinks loads, she's breastfed and I don't produce much milk/ she doesn't feed for long and she's only have an occasional inch of cows milk before bed, rarely finihes, she more has little sips of water throughout the day.

Minster2012 · 18/05/2020 19:16

@Hellohello2020 that sounds good then, I’d def do it if I thought it would work, but he drinks loads of water so yeah might be a big difference!

We’ve had 5 💩today, only 2 of which were in the potty but this afternoon he’s got all wees in the potty which is good even with shorts on, I’m perhaps hopeful he’s now getting the “trousers down before wee” but I’m still having to make sure the potty is v close to him

fascinated · 18/05/2020 19:43

Progress, not perfection

Another day, another dollar tomorrow

It’s all sounding good and going in the right direction. Personally, unless you are totally stressed yourself I wouldn’t put them back into nappies ... it kinda sends out the message to them that you don’t think they’re capable... don’t you think?

(As I say bar situations that are really really stressful - I know there was one poster on here who gave up for the best of reasons )

Minster2012 · 18/05/2020 19:49

Yes I think so @fascinated!
I’m hoping by the time he gets back to nursery he is nearly there

fascinated · 19/05/2020 10:21

They all make it in the end!

peanutandpumkin · 19/05/2020 15:47

Omg!! What is this??? Like 4 massive wees every 10 mins?!! Yes ges been drinking loads but i thought i'll get a break!

I managed to catch only 1 Angry

peanutandpumkin · 19/05/2020 15:49

1 almost made it to babys mouth but thank goodness it didnt 🙈

Minster2012 · 19/05/2020 20:46

@peanutandpumkin “almost made it to baby’s mouth but didn’t” that’s made my day!

That sounds like my day last Tuesday where it was 4 poo’d in an hour after none the day before! My SIL says “oh he only 💩 every 2 days” I’m like 😱the dream! 3 today, 2.5 of which were in the right place.

Mine is going 1.5hours -2 hours in between wees today which is crazy as he drinks a lot. DH gets back, playing in garden I said “be on it it’s now 1.5hours since he weed” obviously after 5 mins a trousers accident happens FFS

peanutandpumkin · 20/05/2020 00:23

@Minster2012 yeh "rolled her" off the "target spot"!😆

Pahahaha!! Hmmm its always when DH is around the accident happens here.. I know 🥴 your LO will get it brilliant that he can hold it for 2 hours 😃😃 thats a breakthrough i think!! 🥳

I am not keeping the training to a strict schedule or keeping much tabs on him (its draining already and i am thankful we dont have much dribble) but roughly i think its been 6 days.. most pf the time hes bare bottom and sometimes commando/pants depends on his mood. Meh, its lock down not like we have anything planned 😕

peanutandpumkin · 20/05/2020 00:25

Yes also 3 poos in the potty today.. hes like a siren when it comes to poos, once he was dancing then stopped and ran screaming i need to poopoo 😆 but wees... 🙄🙄

Minster2012 · 20/05/2020 08:56

God it’s such a rollercoaster isn’t it! @peanutandpumkin I’m only keeping tabs as I still don’t think I know any signs from my DS & also we have 2 very active dogs so I need to take them out in between (& nursery said if he’s to come back they would like an idea of if he’s vaguely predictable as they are spending much more time outside currently)

It’s only when he pulls his trousers down I’m like “potty” for poo there is seemingly no sign for him or me so I’m relying on him to pull his trousers down 😬despite being able to talk well he won’t say potty (though I’ve asked him) & he hates being promoted so I have to leave him to it so stubborn so I think that’s why it will take longer 🤦🏼‍♀️

fascinated · 20/05/2020 13:32

Why does he go so often?! I’m interrupted constantly. Honestly it’s about every hour...my eldest was a camel in comparison!

Minster2012 · 20/05/2020 14:22

@fascinated I thought every hour was usual to start with then it will taper off, I was told by ppl & the book to try to prompt every 45 mins to an hour to start with but mine goes no where near as much as that even last week, but it’s got longer this week so I think as they get used to it then it gets less. I would say like us but I’m a “can’t hold out more than 2 hours” kinda lady 😂

We’ve just had a wee in the paddling pool as he wouldn’t go before, how do you stop that if they won’t be prompted?

peanutandpumkin · 20/05/2020 14:42

@fascinated ive no answer, 😐 for my DS it was every 10 min, half an hour what not!

Today seems to better, i see him hold longer..

peanutandpumkin · 20/05/2020 14:44

@Minster2012 🤷🏽‍♀️ wee is pool i think most young kids get away with it coz they think no one sees it?

Or i am assuming that.. dont you wonder when you see a whole pool full of kids Envy

Minster2012 · 20/05/2020 14:50

Hmmm I bloody saw it infuriating thing just stood up & weed! @peanutandpumkin but I know what you mean!! So frustrating when I know he will need to go & wont listen 🤦🏼‍♀️

Mind you, he did wee before lunch sleep (though did chocolate egg bribery & sat watching tv) so that’s my win today 🤷‍♀️

peanutandpumkin · 20/05/2020 17:19

@Minster2012 🙈🙈

Lol, we are burning tesco milk chocolate buttons somehow thats a hit Hmm lots of prompting, bare bottom and one accident 🤞🏼

But he is going roughly every hour 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️

Day is almost over 😁
