Potty Training During Lockdown!

So now seems like a better time than any and I've decided to potty train my 2yo dd during quarantine! I haven't potty trained for about 10 years and that was with my ds. I've bought her a potty a few weeks ago just to get her used to it but she's still not keen on sitting on it. Any tips please?

Thanks hellohello. She’s in and out of nappies now depending on what she asks for. She’s not actually weeing in them but it makes me feel less on edge and stressed about her potential poo explosion. If she says she needs a wee but won’t sit on toilet then I can just leave her rather than trying to pressure her to sit. I can just say ‘ok’ and carry on with my day and not have to go up to the loo 5 million times. I ask her now, ‘will you let your poo out’ or ‘will you sit on the loo’. If she says no then I don’t take her up to the loo. She did do a quite hard poo in a nappy earlier today so I’m pleased that she’s still pooing a bit. I don’t care if it’s in a nappy, I just want her to be able to poo again and not be scared. She’s also started on movicol now and I can double up the sachets tomorrow. I’m so relieved I have a bit of a plan now.

We’ve had little one in pull ups for ages, nappy pants from Tesco size 6. they can be pulled down like pants for the loo and then back up to continue the day. I’d try that if you haven’t already? If I forget to remove first thing he asks for the loo so he now seems to see them as not for weeing in. Interestingly.

Minster2012 · 11/05/2020 20:19

@MrsLoz that’s great! Successful day! How did you do the 6 days no accidents if I could ask?

We are on day 2 properly today & couple of accidents, one totally my fault for not paying attention one him more, no poo today so 🤷‍♀️The rest on potty either by my suggestion & him trying & pushing it out which is great or by him just going on it which I’m so pleased by

TwistyHair · 11/05/2020 20:36

I was actually thinking about pull-ups fascinated because doing the tabs is a pain in the bum.

Indecisivelurcher · 11/05/2020 20:56

Good news @twistyhair

MrsLoz · 11/05/2020 22:17

@Minster2012 we tried about a month ago and after 2 days gave up as she was not getting it at all and was fighting the potty. Went back to full time nappies.

Then last Tuesday I took her nappy off first thing and decided to let her have nappy free time. She randomly started using the potty on her own. I thought it might be a fluke but she kept it up. Just made sure it was in whichever room we were in.

I still feel as though I’m being tricked! as it was so hard when we first attempted it and got no where. It must have just clicked with her, she’s done really well today too, but have had to prompt her to go rather than just going herself like she does usually.

fascinated · 12/05/2020 09:58

Totally! My boy was so wriggly, it was a no brainer! He just refused to lie down from 18mths!

WoolyMammoth55 · 12/05/2020 10:43

Hi all! Sorry to crash the thread - just found it! My DS is going to be 3 in a couple of weeks, has read all the potty books and had the potty and toilet seat insert hanging around for months, but hasn't wanted to try much and nursery told me he wasn't ready, which I pretty much agreed with. Then DH decided he wanted a lockdown project (!?) and insisted nappies are for nights only.

So DS has been commando for the past 5 days and all going pretty well - a couple of wees on the floor on the first day and a couple of poos on the floor on day 1 and 2, but he's weeing on the potty like a pro now :) Chocolate button bribery was a key part of this win!

My only concerns are: first, he's definitely pooping less than normal. Max one a day, when in nappies he's a 2-3 a day boy. Yesterday we had no poos all day (for maybe the first time in his life!) and even though he's pooped now, I'm aware he's obviously finding it a bit tricky to poo on the potty/toilet. Is this normal? Any advice on how to make it easier on him?

And secondly, I'm wondering how we handle getting him dressed again! I saw above someone said joggers not pants, which I think makes sense - but how soon should we try those on him? I'd be really grateful for any advice - he's my first and I've got no clue!

fascinated · 12/05/2020 13:50

It’s normal for them to reduce the number of poos. That’s a good sign actually.

Minster2012 · 12/05/2020 16:34

@WoolyMammoth55 that sounds amazing! The book says loose joggers & to teach to “push down” not “pull your trousers down” like we always say. As that’s the actual action. Good luck!

I’d like some advice please, we are on day 3 really, after day one success, only couple of accidents & one poo in & one out of potty there was no poo yesterday but similar only couple of accidents, one totally my fault.

Today has been a nightmare. Started badly with bit of an early morning & screaming resistance from the start. We were expecting poo as none yesterday & within an hour he had poo once which I got most in potty then he seemed shocked as more cane out so I got him quickly back on but lots out of potty, loads of praise. But more came again & again within an hour. Once he got on potty & once not.

Massive tantrums in between then & he went ages without weeing throwing the potty so I was totally hovering & trying to prompt a lot I think he was getting frustrated. Then he grabbed a play jug of his & weed in it.

Do I praise that??
We had lunch then & during lunch he weed massively in the high chair he was obviously still needing more. I haven’t noticed any signs yet.

This afternoon he’s been tantrumming more & despite me trying to get him to sit on it no joy with potty. Big wee on chair 🤦🏼‍♀️he’s resisting so much when yesterday he was doing it himself

Please help I’ve had a awful day

He’s only young, 21months

TwistyHair · 12/05/2020 16:58

@WoolyMammoth55 we’ve had so so so many poo issues. It all came to a head yesterday and she’s now back in nappies and on laxatives! She was so scared to poo she was holding it in. Now the poo is hard. So we’re doing a mix of nappies and pants depending on what she asks for. I know some people say not to mix but I think it’s also important for the children to have control over it. And for parents not to be stressed. I was so worked up worrying about poo accidents that I got in a right tiz. Have you looked at the pooland app?

@Minster2012 if I were you I’d back off completely. Which is almost impossible, believe me I know! But if it becomes too high pressured and intense then I think they push back even more. And it’s a battle you can never win. You can’t make someone sit and you can’t make someone poo or wee. Btw, I’ve been that mum who is super encouraging and prompting and positive so I’m not judging! It’s so hard.

WoolyMammoth55 · 12/05/2020 17:37

Oh @Minster2012 that sounds really tough - I'm so sorry. I don't have any frame of reference except that our boy is almost 3 now and I think he was ready this time. I know that doesn't help much! wish you luck and stength and also I'm a major cave-in-er :) so maybe if it's too hard put a nappy on for a day and have a rest?

@TwistyHair I'm sorry too to hear your little one got so bunged up! It's all learning for mums as well as bubs so don't beat yourself up. You did great to get it back in control with nappies and laxatives - good call! I'm downloading pooland app now - thanks!

TwistyHair · 12/05/2020 19:16

Thanks Wooly. She did do a poo in her nappy and it was still really hard. She was quite upset about it being in her nappy. But she asked to see it and I put it down the loo. Seriously it was like a golf ball. She seemed happy with it going down the loo and flushing the loo. I’ll add another sachet tomorrow of movicol so hopefully the next one will be less hard. It can take up to 48 hours to start working anyway. I’m just pleased she’s still pooing even if it’s in nappies. Just anything to keep it all moving. Hope you enjoy pooland! I’ve watched it a gazillion times. It’s so budget.

Minster2012 · 12/05/2020 19:43

Thank you @WoolyMammoth55 I’m going to keep going for a few days & try to stay positive, my friends & family do say he’s like me v iron willed so I don’t want to give up easily, not with lock down & when he initiated it & nursery too were saying it wouldn’t be far off. If he can reach for the potty or something half the time then he definitely knows it’s just to crack the timing & signs maybe. I’m not really spotting them

Tomorrow is another day.
Bearing in mind we are TTC for a second this cleaning up 💩& wee ain’t sexy 🤦🏼‍♀️

WoolyMammoth55 · 13/05/2020 08:44

Well DS has decided to wear his Paw Patrol pj bottoms today with no pants or nappy. He's not very good at getting them down over his bum and out of the way of the potty, so I'm being a bit more hands-on than for the past couple of days - fingers crossed they don't get pooed on as they're his favourite things EVER! :)

How's everyone else getting on today? X

Minster2012 · 13/05/2020 13:38

Ha ha @WoolyMammoth55 fingers crossed the paw patrol stay clean!! After a rubbish day yesterday it’s started well so far today for us with some just going on the potty & some being led. Once though when DS has gone himself he has stood up to wee over it, second time he’s done this now (u can imagine how that’s gone 🤦🏼‍♀️) should I try to stop this or go with it & try to get his aim better?? How the hell do i do that? How does he then sit to poo??

MrsLoz · 13/05/2020 18:12

After 6 days of no accidents with bare gun, we have tried pants and loose bottoms this past two days but lots of accidents! A few times she has just not bothered attempting to use the potty at all and when she/we have not got her pants/trousers down in time. Need to Persevere I guess!

Minster2012 · 14/05/2020 10:09

@MrsLoz oh no sending virtual hugs I think we are going to be in the same boat today, we are attempting trousers after yesterday no accidents & DS on his own seeking out the potty & going (no poo though that has been in nappy in the morning & same this morning) but already one set of trousers down this morning!
I’m with you! Fingers crossed for a better day today

fascinated · 14/05/2020 18:12

Backtracking today - 2 poo accidents , glad I have the pads in the pants. Cleanup so much easier.

Just didn’t get there in time. Poor wee lamb was upset...

WoolyMammoth55 · 14/05/2020 21:59

Yes it's much more confusing for them with clothes isn't it? Luckily it was a wee not a poo on the Paw Patrols but we went back to bare bum prett quick yesterday!

At one point today my boy said "can I put trousers on to do a poo please?" :) Had to explain potty was better... About an hour of fidgeting later he finally did one, bless

Minster2012 · 14/05/2020 22:34

That sounds like great progress though @Woolymammoth55, are you just going to wait for no accidents in trousers?

I tried trousers first thing & DS went through 2 pairs without seemingly noticing so we also went back to bare bum I don’t know whether to try again tomorrow or not 😬

TwistyHair · 15/05/2020 06:27

We’re doing no better. She’s still asking to up and down to the toilet a gazillion times a day. But it’s better now that she’s on laxatives though as at least her poo is soft. Still no more poos on the toilet but she’s in nappy pants now so the accidents don’t matter. She really wants to do it on the toilet but just won’t relax enough. It’s a shame coz she had quite a few on the toilet before

fascinated · 15/05/2020 14:12

Twisty - any advice from Doc? Hi

TwistyHair · 15/05/2020 17:14

We got movicol. She said just to keep using until she’s going regularly. So we’re sticking to that for the moment. Still lots of up and down today. I try to be strict and say I’ll only take her up if she does a poo but she says she will then refuses even before I’ve put her on the toilet. And cries if I don’t take her up. She’s in nappy pants and is still doing wees on the toilet. She really wants to do poos in the toilet. But still says she’s scared. And is now saying she’s sad about poo

peanutandpumkin · 15/05/2020 19:36

Sorry can I jump in?

Ds is spot on for poos when bare bum and maybe one or 2 self initiated wees. But as soon as i put him on pants he poos in them he doesnt tell me at all.

Do you guys know why that happens? I mean he doesnt wee on potty most pf the time but poo is something he got it from beginning. But put him in ants or trousers (no nappy) he just doesnt care
