Potty Training During Lockdown!

So now seems like a better time than any and I've decided to potty train my 2yo dd during quarantine! I haven't potty trained for about 10 years and that was with my ds. I've bought her a potty a few weeks ago just to get her used to it but she's still not keen on sitting on it. Any tips please?

Ah, twisty. commiserations. Have you tried asking her straight out why she is scared? Maybe she has misunderstood sth she has heard or seen?

Could it be painful?

TwistyHair · 06/05/2020 23:06

It’s not painful I don’t think. I think it’s because she looks between her legs and sees a long brown sausage come out of her arse and drop into the toilet! Poor thing. I try to get her not to look but I can’t stop her. Honestly, she was holding both her hands as hard as she could on her bum to stop the poo coming out.

TwistyHair · 06/05/2020 23:07

I’ve asked her why she’s scared but she can’t really answer.

What should I do with this one then... Ds (3 on Sunday) is not dry overnight, still in a nappy. But has started to wake in the night to use the toilet. Twice last night. My older daughter also wakes most nights for different reasons, and they are early risers so I am hanging on by a thread today. The only things I can think of are to try to reduce his drinks in the evening (he's a BIG drinker, this will be hard), put him in a pull up instead of a nappy so it's easier to whip off, and put a potty in the bathroom in case he decides to take himself (unlikely in the dark).

Indecisivelurcher · 07/05/2020 08:39

@twistyhair sounds like you're doing everything you can. It will be a phase. You've just to ride it out.

fascinated · 07/05/2020 09:31

Lurcher, mine also wakes for the loo.

Reduce drinks evening? But add more mornings and lunch .

TwistyHair · 07/05/2020 09:57

Thanks for your optimism Lurcher! I so hope so.

If I were you I’d try pull ups for nights. Just for it being quicker. And maybe he’ll stop weeing at night soon.

SuddenArborealStop · 07/05/2020 10:54

We're doing much better since I gave out to DS he's taking himself to the potty whenever he needs to go. OK I shouldn't have done it and it's not how I would choose to parent but it seems to have sunk in now what we want him to doBlush

Indecisivelurcher · 07/05/2020 11:27

@sudden been there, don't beat yourself up. None of us have a manual. The parents or the kids.

Indecisivelurcher · 07/05/2020 11:27

If it works and doesn't cause harm

Hellohello2020 · 07/05/2020 18:19

I wander twisty if she thinks it's part of her body falling out when she poos! Maybe have conversations or find some books on poo. Talk about food your body doesn't want, it's rubbish, waste etc.

TwistyHair · 07/05/2020 22:08

Yes, hellohello, I was thinking that too. She needed another poo again this eve but wouldn’t do one. More crying on the toilet and looking really scared. We watched pooland a few times but maybe I need to go down a more medical route.

fascinated · 07/05/2020 22:32

Yeah I’d do that.

Have you tried having toys poo on the potty etc? You probably have...

fascinated · 07/05/2020 22:34

Oh Crap lady recommends saying things like let it go/ let it slide out / trying to get them to relax.... although it sounds as though she has a misunderstanding, almost, about what is happening.

TwistyHair · 08/05/2020 07:26

We’ve tried toys, phone, books, songs, bubbles. It all stems from the first time she did a poo on the toilet and saw it come out. It just made her totally freak. Wish I’d stopped her looking at it. She was fine before that. Even the couple of times she did it in her leggings she wasn’t really upset about. Not like this.

fascinated · 08/05/2020 07:41

Oh dear. Not sure what to suggest.

I think a “medical “ explanation can’t hurt. Why not? Can’t do any harm ... I think often toddlers understand more than people give them credit for.

All the best

TwistyHair · 08/05/2020 12:43

She’s done poo!! It’s only taken four hours of up and down to the toilet and she didn’t cry. Had to spend the last 45 mins next to the toilet because she was on and off so much. But she didn’t cry! Or at least only a tiny bit.

Hellohello2020 · 08/05/2020 12:45

That's great twisty

fascinated · 08/05/2020 12:56

Great!

TwistyHair · 08/05/2020 14:04

Thanks. You guys have kept me going.

fascinated · 08/05/2020 16:04

I appreciate this thread too! Anyone having a bank holiday treat? Lovely weather here. Bare bum again, his choice!

SuddenArborealStop · 08/05/2020 17:04

It's not a bank holiday here but I'm sure I can find some wine anyway Grin
I'm scared to say we've cracked it but no accidents in a couple of days and I'm only prompting if I think he's gotten distracted or we're going out.

fascinated · 08/05/2020 17:17

Fantastic news!

Minster2012 · 09/05/2020 19:08

Is this group still going???
If so can I join?
I need some guidance 😂
1st DS, just turned 21months, we thought about potty training in lockdown then he didn’t seem ready so stopped. (So I stopped reading Oh crap) Now he’s started again pulling nappies down & with the warm weather he’s been naked today & wee’d (NOT IN THE POTTY I’ve provided, I think it might be too small??) but in the dogs water bowl, & pulled out his sink from his toddler kitchen & squatted on that!!
We missed a poo as that was after lunch nap & DH had already got a nappy on him as I said “leave him naked after lunch” & he said too late he’s already poo’d but he did tell me & pulled his nappy down.

Do I praise him for going in a place that’s not a potty???

We have toilet steps & seat which he has wee’d on before for our toilets & a toddler seat & steps but if we help him onto that he gets pissed off. He prefers doing it himself. In a place that’s not a potty it seems!! I’m keen to use this last lockdown time to get it sorted 🤔😂

TwistyHair · 09/05/2020 20:53

@Minster2012 sounds positive! Kind of! The dog water bowl is hilarious (probably not for you)

My daughter pooed in her pants today. I was so annoyed because we were upstairs for ages because I knew she needed a poo. She kept refusing to sit on toilet even though she was asking to go. Then she did it while I was out the room for a minute. Argh!
