Day 4: wees great, poos a disaster. Carry on or give up?!

DS2 has been in pants since Monday (he's 2.6) and got the hang of weeing in the potty straight away. But poos are a different matter - none in potty, loads in pants and a couple on the floor!

I know he's young and I don't mind admitting defeat for now BUT he loves his big boy pants and is doing so well with wees. I don't want to go backwards but otoh the novelty of scraping off pooey pants could wear thin fast.

Advice?!

Bumping for you too as I am in exactly same boat with dd (2.5) who has also been in big girl knickers since Monday. Wees are going really well but I'm not sure I can face a repeat of this evening's icky performance at the swings on way home from nursery - I'm going to have to hop in the bath once she's drifted off to decontaminate myself!

Nursery are helping loads with the actual training but not with their health drive they seem to have kicked off this week involving way too much fruit for a toddler's digestive system. And I'm the bugger who had to deal with the fall-out

Yes DS2 eats loads of fruit and I'm not sure that's helping, I'll have to consider putting him on a stodgy diet to firm things up a bit! Luckily he hasn't pooed himself in public YET but it's only a matter of time. Going to toddler group tomorrow with lots of clean pants and my fingers firmly crossed! Hope you have more joy with it soon...

I hope your trip to toddler group was a success - and/or you at least met some fellow parents with a few top tips?! I am really reluctant to call it a day so I think I'll persevere through a few more incidents. Not sure how to handle a couple of situations next week though - DD is spending a couple of hours at a friend's house on Monday and a babysitter is picking her up from nursery on Thursday evening. Not sure I can lumber either of them with potty training at this stage but would pull-ups be a retrograde step in these two situations?

It's only Friday... so 5th day! Don't be so impatient! Keep giving loads of encouragement. I bought stars in 2 sizes - little star for wee on potty - big star for poo. Loads of praise and rewards. Mine are 16 and 17 now

Just been idly trawling through other potty training threads and it seems there are lots of us in the same boat - especially here. Few concrete suggestions other than just waiting it out though (someone mentioned it had been going on for 7 months !)

Oh dear, poor thing, good luck dealing with that when it happens . Hope he's not too uncomfortable.

After a good couple of days we seem to have gone backwards today - 2 wet accidents, 1 poo in pants (thankfully a more manageable consistency than last 2 days) and a combo. Think she's been having too much fun to think about potties - and still not up for number 2s in right place.

How's it going Ktay? We had one (small) poo in pants yesterday, and one (teeny) in the loo, I guess this is progress of sorts, though he's still obviously holding it in!

Hi, do you mind I if I join you ladies?

DS is just 3 and we started potty training on Saturday. Wee's are going well, but poo's not so much.

We've had very few wee accidents but Saturday he did a poo in the potty only
because we noticed and got him there in time. Sunday = poo accident, today (at nursery) = 2 x poo accidents

We'd done various bits of nappy free time before starting in earnest at the weekend and he'd always done equally well with wee's and poo's.

I wondered if there was anything I could say or do now to prevent it becoming an issue (if it isn't already )

I like the idea of stars in 2 sizes but we haven't done a reward chart or anything so far

We're off to a party this afternoon so might ask my mum friends there if they have any tips - I'll report back!

I am going down the all-out bribery route (sweeties and some much coveted fancy stickers). I have also downloaded 'Poo Goes To Pooland' and read that several times! He had a poo in the toilet this morning so fingers crossed...

Wow Meg, sounds like you have had some real successes! I too am thinking bribery - either sweeties for every poo or a bigger-ticket item (scooter?) with star chart for cracking it properly. Think the latter might prove a bit traumatic for all concerned though.

I'll try the Pooland story too - have tried an abridged version from memory but maybe it's time to read it in earnest.

Sounds like your littlies are doing great

Sum total today = no wee accidents, 3 (out of 3) poo accidents.

General consensus from party mums was poo's are problematic! One particular friend started last weekend with her ds and has been having poo issues all the way through. However just as we were leaving the party, her ds came over to us and announced he had just done a huge poo in the toilet!

I am very much hoping this struck a chord with ds who now, whenever we talk about doing a poo says 'like

Hmm so far today (day 4) no wee accidents, no poo success, 1 poo accident. Wee's going awesomely. Poos awful . I think he doesn't get enough warning. I'm wondering whether I've started too soon now or if I should have left it a while?

Wees all fine here... One poo accident today - told me he needed toilet, just did a trump... two minutes later, poo in pants. So he is definitely getting the idea although the timing needs refining!

That's great, I hope today has brought similar results for you both?

No such successes here sadly; I had high hopes of the chocolate bribery technique but that just makes dd want to sit on the loo at random (usually inconvenient...) times in the hopes of getting a chocolate star. When she actually needs to go, she does it in her knickers. Back at nursery for first time this week and she saved one up for me at end of day it seems.

Wees still going well tho so should be thankful for that. I've asked dd when she's going to start using potty/loo for poos as well and she informs me "in a few weeks' time"

at your dd Ktay . Quality answer!

Well yesterday we had one poo accodent in the morning. Then he remembered the buttons . Then a poo success just before bedtime (great - sweets 1 min before bedtime!).

All wee's went great, even with time to walk to a toilet when we were out, so no complaints there.

DS does seem to have a bit of a thing about toilets when we're out though - he'll go once and do a wee, but then we'll end up going back 3 times after he insists he needs a wee, but nothing happens! Bit of a pain and means it takes ages to go out anywhere! Still I'm sure it's just a phase and the novelty of toilets will wear off

Oh God I can imagine DD doing exactly that with the public lavs. Like you say, I'm sure he'll find something more interesting to obsess over in due course!

Not much progress here - DD brought a D&V bug back from nursery that I'm just shaking off so she had a day or so back in nappies (well, pull-ups) just to be on the safe side. Back in the pants now with the usual wee successes/poo accidents. I read what Gina had to say on the matter in her book and her relevant case study was of a boy who had apparently been traumatised by his nanny referring to 'stinky' poos and giving him (in GF's opinion) a bit of a complex. I've tried to avoid this myself (easier said than done when dealing with a messy accident/the 'D' in D&V) but you can't stop them hearing it from other sources really. Maybe I'll have to redouble my efforts with a positive poo PR exercise over the next few days!

Well day 14 now (I think) and we seem (touch wood) to have cracked it, no accidents for several days and lots of poos on the loo :)

Ktay poor dd getting a d&v bug - what timing! Think you have to just write those days off and ignore them - dd won't have been feeling right anyway do probably won't even associate it too much with being 'back in nappies'? Sounds like you're heading in the right direction again now

Day 8 or 9 here I think. Good day, no accidents so far (and only 20 mins before bedtime). Wee's and poo's in the potty or loo when put. Had a birthday party where I wasn't there for most of it and DS had to ask another mum for the loo, but he did it and in time etc, so that's a step forward I think to have to confidence to ask someone when he wanted to go?

I'm quite pleased that today is a Good Day as yesterday was a Bad Day .

Another nursery day and I'll be v pleased if he can get through that accident free.....
