After reading the AIBU thread about potty training, I thought, I'll start a support thread.
I'm about to start training this week with the help of my mum Blush and DS not at nursery.
Who care to join me to share (and not judge) our experiences and successes?

Well we seem to be going downhill after a good start on Monday. More accidents yesterday than on Monday and not a good start today with more accidents and refusal to sit on the potty. AAAGHH! Hate the whole thing. To top it off, have spent the last few weeks weaning DD and she just hates it :( she's always been a crap feeder. oh well, onwards and upwards.

feralgirl · 10/08/2011 12:55

Yep, another crappy morning. Twice DS has been led to the loo only to refuse and then pee himself seconds later which is just beginning to get bloody irritating now. I can't believe I was so upbeat about the whole thing earlier in the week!

I really want to give up but I feel as though we've come this far, it'd be daft to stop now. I am just so bored of having a big pile of wee-y clothes sat in front of the washing machine as it just isn't able to go fast enough to keep up with all the accidents.

MetalSian · 10/08/2011 13:15

Gah I agree... the washing loads of wet wee filled pants and trousers... and a t-shirt today.
Ran out of pants so just leaving DS with a t-shirt. Massive wee all over the floor. Not one success yet today.
Hoping things will improve later but my patience is starting to wane.

I think I am going to try stickers, not got a chart but might make one myself as we have some doctor who and cars stickers lying around waiting to be used.

I hate potty training. Possibly the worst part of having a child so far xD!

Whenisitmysleepytime · 10/08/2011 20:35

We're regressing too! :(
Success first thing then loads of no notice wees and a poo.
We braved a pub meal in pants and he did a huge wee in high chair seconds after telling me NO when I asked if he needed a wee! Hmm we had a wet the bed sheet underneath so no harm done. However my mortification was increased after he said wee and did a discrete one in the corner in his potty and then shouted "ME DONE BIG WEE WEE IN POTTY!" Blush

I've just sat and drawn loads of stickers with dh on sticky labels a he didn't give a stuff about the stars I bought.
Going to lay on the praise like mad tomorrow and hope for the best!

Feel better knowing everyone else is having re-lapses :)

Mummystootired · 10/08/2011 21:29

We had nothing all morning then three lots of wet pants. one wee was while she was sat on dining chair so I had to give that a good clean. On the last wee she got a tiny dribble in the potty so we made a big deal off it cheered and everything. after that she kept wanting to sit on potty but did no more wees.
I think tomorrow I will make a sticker chart. I went out and bought more pants, it's quite surprising how many you get through in one day!

Mummystootired · 11/08/2011 15:14

have given up for today as she was refusing to sit on potty

Mummystootired · 11/08/2011 16:26

She has just amazed me. I was giving up all hope and put a nappy back on then she announced she was doing a wee and needed the potty.(it was too late for potty).
So we are trying again with pants on. She now seems to know when she is going even if she isn't on the potty. That is progress!Grin
How is everyone doing?

feralgirl · 11/08/2011 19:54

FFS. Two days with no hits and about a million near misses. I completely lost the plot last night when DS shat on my mum and dad's bed. He is completely aware of what he's doing, tells us in advance that he needs to go, then does it on the floor/ bath/ in pants.

We are staying at my parent's though and there are lots of people coming and going and we're all making a big fuss about asking him if he needs to go; I think it's all a bit much for him tbh. Hopefully when we go back home it'll all be a bit more relaxed.

Whenisitmysleepytime · 11/08/2011 20:40

Just as I was thinking of quitting he's had a fab day. EVERYTHING went in the potty or big toilet! Grin
We had been scaling back on treats (mum's suggestion) after Monday's success but reintroduced them today and also some differet stickers. He didn't care about the stars but the crappy mummy and dh drawn stickers of peppa, octonauts, dinosaurs etc are way more effective!
Not sure it'll be as good tomorrow- especially as got an hour car journey and going to try putting him in pull-ups.

tootired it's amazing how they surprise us sometimes! Well done your dd! :) I'm equating potty training to walking - they fall over a lot to start, and still do a bit now, but they soon got the hang of it.

Good luck for tomorrow everyone! ;)

brachy · 11/08/2011 21:54

I might as well join in seeing as this is day 2! Today, DS (22 months) was in pants the whole day, he took himself to the potty twice for a wee, the other wees were when I told him to have one. He seems very good at weeing on demand. We went to the supermarket to buy him a little potty that I can carry with me, he remained dry the hour we were out. I also bought nappy mats for the car and the buggy.
I feel he has done really well so far, but I wonder how long it will be before he takes himself off for a wee without me asking him to go.
Tomorrow is going to be a test, we are out all day with another family so they will just have to wait 2 mins every hour when I will ask DS to wee.

SurelyNotMe · 11/08/2011 22:11

Please can I join?. Started potty training DD (2.7) yesterday. Progress so far....

Day 1 - one wee on floor, one wee on toilet (though I think it was just good timing, she looked pretty shocked when it came out!). One v small poo in knickers - she realised she had no nappy on and held the rest in. NOTHING for the rest of the day.

Day 2 - one wee in PJs first thing, then 5 wees on toilet (all instigated by her!!). Was very chuffed until this evening...... after witholding poos most of the day she ran off to hide and did 3 poos in her knickers (telling us afterwards). Yuk.

We're going to an art class tomorrow, travelling by car & train. With no nappies. I must be bonkers!! :)

Whenisitmysleepytime · 12/08/2011 20:16

surely how did it go?

Hope everyones had a good day. We had NO accidents again! That's two days in a row now! Grin he still needs reminding and I had to put him on the potty but he went willingly and is loving the home made stickers! :)

brachy · 12/08/2011 21:20

Day 3 here and he is practically done! I am in shock and quite amazed seeing as he is only 22 months.
He started the day well with some unpromted wees, I caught him concentrating so put him on the pot for a poo. We then went for a 5 mile walk, he had one accident in the buggy as he was asleep...my fault really. After that he took himself off to the potty all afternoon with no accidents. I gave him plenty of juice to keep the idea going!
He had a big wee before bath, a wee after bath, then bed!
\Tomorrow will be the test as we have to go shopping in town and he doesnt like his travel potty...time to go to a shop and let him pick a small one.

Whenisitmysleepytime · 12/08/2011 21:29

Well done little brachy!
John Lewis potties are tiny- bought one or ds and his bum doesn't fit in it!!!

Canistaysane · 12/08/2011 21:34

Nothing in potty yet but she does say when she has just done one.

Canistaysane · 12/08/2011 21:36

P.s. I name changed from Mummystootired.

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 12/08/2011 22:14

Wees we are perfect at home. Not so good out, although he will wee on a 'big boy toilet' when taken.

Poos a complete disaster, he hates doing them on the potty and wants to do them on the floor. If I don't hover round him when I can tell he needs to go and literally grab him and plonk him on, then nothing gets on the potty.

SurelyNotMe · 12/08/2011 22:57

Well we managed a full morning out of the house with no accidents! One massive wee in a public toilet (it got a bit stressful as I knew she needed a wee but she wouldn't do anything). She then refused to wee at her grans house but fortunately weed on the loo when we got home. Then for no apparent reason, about 10 minutes after a big wee on the loo, she weed on the floor Confused

She also held in her poo all day so I suspect I will have a lovely suprise in her nappy in the morning!

Anyone else's LOs holding in poos? DD has a history of it. She has been trying to withhold poos since Christmas so has been on movicol. I put off potty training for as long as I could, but she was really ready so I am taking a chance.

Should I still be asking her if she needs the toilet? We are on Day 3 and I was asking her today but it just really annoyed her! Think I need to chill out a bit

Canistaysane · 13/08/2011 19:36

Feeling like a failure today. I gave up around lunch time and she has been in pull ups most of the day. Just as well as she had 2 messy poos in her pull ups.

Dysgu · 13/08/2011 22:02

This really is all very up and down isn't it?

My last post was when I was so near to just giving up and calling it a day until Christmas (the next long school holidays) and then DD2 seems to pretty much have cracked it!

Part of it, I think, is that I decided that it was knickers the whole time apart from at night so no more pull ups (which were, admittedly, for my convenience!) and I guess it makes more sense to her. we also hardly went out for the past two days so have had plenty of opportunity to get to the potty.

DD2 is now happily using the toilet sometimes - with a child seat - although I get the feeling that she just 'holds' it if we are out sometimes! DP spent 25 minutes with her in the library toilets today and nothing!! But she wasn't desperate to go when she got home - and I had to persuade her to use the potty - which she did!

Fingers crossed that we are nearly there. DP took them both out for several hours today and DD2 came home in the same clothes she was wearing when they left - and yes, they were still dry!

Dysgu · 13/08/2011 22:04

Oh and as for sticker charts - I bought a big A2 sheet of card from Staples, with stars around the edge and simply divided the space into 4 rows and 7 columns to represent 4 weeks.

Then I bought the Super stars and Smiles 738 sticker book from Staples for a couple of pounds.

This has been successful with both my girls - they simply love getting the stickers and as the book has 4 different sized stickers in lots of different designs it seems to work really well and moves around the house with the potty!

Dysgu · 13/08/2011 22:06

SurelyNotMe - regarding asking - I gave that up after a couple of days as DD2 seemed to find it something of a nuisance. She pretty quickly got the idea of telling me she needed the potty - which is always close at hand!

brachy · 13/08/2011 23:02

DS (22 months) had another good day today. He spent the morning at home with DH and remained dry. He used the potty on his own...no reminders or prompting. We then all went to town for lunch where he wee'd in his newly purchased potty. I couldn't even get the potty out of Boots without him demanding to try it! Back at home, the afternoon was a success- 2 poos, many wees and a happy DS!

It's now quite easy to spot when a poo is coming as he wees about 5 times in 10 minutes and then produces! Hopefully this will change over the next few weeks.

So, in 3 days, I think he has done brilliantly, we'll just keep on rewarding him and see what happens.

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 13/08/2011 23:42

We managed a whole day out with no pull ups, and no accidents!

And then 20 minutes after we got home he wee'd in his shorts Confused

But the pooing is improving. We are getting there I think.

feralgirl · 14/08/2011 21:03

Well done everyone, it all sounds as thought the trend is steadily upwards. We are still very hit and miss. Brought DS home from my mum's today to a newly carpeted house and he promptly did a massive turd on the floor in his room!

Anyone else having trouble at night? DS sleeps in Pampers 12 hours, so cannot possibly feel wet, but has been waking up and howling for us to change his nappy a couple of times a night. I really didn't anticipate that but I assume that he is waking up a bit, weeing, and then getting all anxious because he knows that wee belongs in the potty/ loo during the daytime. I really thought that he would just carry on weeing in his sleep for a good long while but last night was sheer hell!
