Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

chicken pox as an adult is like being the living dead. If mine hadnt had it by age 10 I would definitely immunise. I had over a month off work.

jabberwocky · 09/12/2010 03:25

Satin Shock I guess I had forgotten that you had it as an adult. I have heard that it is much more severe.

Indith, I even remember my childhood friends having the mumps and wondering when I would catch it. Strangely enough I never did and wound up having to get the MMR when I went to graduate school.

Indith · 09/12/2010 07:57

Oh lovely Satin. I'll look forward to it! Never had chicken pox myself, having minor panic attacks every time I itch. I'm hoping it turns out I have immunity anyway like a friend of mine who just had a blood test for immunity as she wanted to have the vaccine. Turned out she had naturally immunity even without having the pox, must have been exposed at some point but never displayed symptoms. My sister had it and I didn't so fingers crossed!

Dd has joined the club now.

SatinShoes · 09/12/2010 08:20

Eek. Indith - go to the GP and ask for antivirals just in case you get it. I didnt know you could get them, and didnt want to go to the docs when I first got it as I was infectious. Apparently they seriously shorten the impact.

DD2 is 4!!!!!

Indith · 09/12/2010 09:12

4! So old! Still just over a month until ds gets old, I can pretend he is my baby a while longer.

Don't think the GP would like it too much if I dragged 2 infectious children down there on the off chance that I get it. First sign of symptoms though and I'l be on the phone.

Just dressed ds and he has lots more spots than whewn I checked them when he got up. Poor boy. We've left off the pants nad just put his pj bottoms back on as he has lots in his groin that pants would rub against.

jabberwocky · 09/12/2010 23:12

Could you get the jab now and be safe?

Elibean · 10/12/2010 16:48

Blush sorry, tend to vanish from everywhere at this time of year. Non stop birthdays, parties, PTA things, School things....a blur. Both dds parties done, though, so I feel a little saner.

Satin, really sorry dd2 still having wee problems...poor thing, and you too not knowing what the problem is. Maybe the allergy thing is related, after all?? Fingers crossed for some useful input from the specialists.

Castles, how is/was your Ball? Xmas Fair survived, hope you survived the Ball and the weather didn't spoil it!

Chicken pox for grown-ups is no fun: definitely get antivirals Indith - they do work! My shingles was bad enough with, but would have been a lot worse without. Hope you don't need them, but as they need to be taken fast if you start itching for real, best to have them handy....the quicker you start them, the better they work. Still waiting for dd2 to get the pox, btw, she never caught them from her sis either Hmm

Festive hugs and gingerbread biscuits to everyone, before I vanish back into a whirl of something or other (laundry, I think, ugh).

Indith · 12/12/2010 10:42

Hello Eli Xmas Smile

Think ds is over the worst of it. He doesn't have a temp today!

Dd has spent the past 2 nights throwing herself around my bed and crying.

I'm going to have a lot of Christmas prep catching up to do when they are better!

jabberwocky · 12/12/2010 16:29

I'm glad you're seeing the other side of it, Indith.

I'm going to try to get the house clean and finish Christmas shopping today Hmm

Had a lovely evening with an old friend from high school who is here in town on business. And dh actually mustered up the energy to go out for dinner first which was a terrific surprise! His new doctor confirmed my suspicion that a pacemaker is the only thing that will make him feel better so we are pushing to do that ASAP. I want my old dh back!

Elibean · 13/12/2010 11:02

Gosh, Jabber, missed that about your dh being poorly...sorry to hear it, but glad there's a clear solution. Hope it happens soon, then.

Hurrah for receding pox - and here's to you NOT getting it, Indith Xmas Smile

Only 4.5 more days till the end of term!

[fbear] (had to try it out)

jabberwocky · 13/12/2010 13:41

Eli, I don't know how much I've really posted about it. It's been an ongoing thing for really several years now and we've been getting tests, trying meds etc to figure it out. I'm excited that we finally know something that could really make a difference. Dh is anxious about having the procedure but slowly coming to grips with the fact that nothing else is going to help him.

Indith · 16/12/2010 12:42

Oh yes because more snow was just what we needed.

castlesintheair · 16/12/2010 13:37

It's raining in Richmond Xmas Sad

Elibean · 16/12/2010 21:04

Freezing rain in Barnes Xmas Hmm

Jabber, that makes sense. A lot to get his head around!

Indith · 16/12/2010 21:20

Well not much snow thankfully. Hope Lenni is ok!

Curled up under a blanket watching Dirk Gently Xmas Smile

accessorizequeen · 16/12/2010 22:16

It's blinking freezing in Hull! Our road still not cleared and I slide down it every time, I'm going to hit something soon. You're not going to Scotland for Xmas or anything are you castles, you sound desperate for some snow! I love snow, it's great when you get it for the weekend, then it rains first thing monday and no ice! Even the dcs are sick of it now...
jabber, hope things go well with dh, does sound like a plan after all this time!
Eek, 8 days till xmas. I'm sure there's lots to be done but too tired to make the list.

castlesintheair · 17/12/2010 13:06

A lovely dusting of snow just before I pick the DCs up for end of term. Perfect Xmas Grin

AQ, not Scotland, just various locations in the SW, including Dorset on Sunday and we better be able to get there as it is my 3 nights of luxury (en famille) at a hotel. Can't wait!! Have a knot in my stomach about Xmas at the in-laws but am hoping (as ever) for peace and harmony all round Xmas Grin

Yes, I can imagine the snow does get a bit boring after a while ... hope you are all ok you norverners.

castlesintheair · 17/12/2010 13:07

I meant to put a scepical face after my in-laws comment, not a grin!!

Indith · 17/12/2010 16:14

Sending peaceful thoughts your way Castles Xmas Smile

So today at music group we sang happy birthday 4 times to various children including dd. After each time she pretended to blow candles out and att eh end she demanded "where's the cake mummy?" Xmas Grin [proud] girl after my own heart clearly but she has hardly been to any parties! How has she formed the cake expectation!

One manic weekend of cleaning and Christmas/birthday prep coming up.

jabberwocky · 18/12/2010 01:34

I have my great-niece for the night. She's 10 months younger than ds2 and they are having a blast! Trying to give my nephew and his wife a small break on their anniversay. Of course they still have the 2 month old twins so not a total break.

accessorizequeen · 21/12/2010 08:42

Two month old twins, it's just a blur to me now! Did the boys love sleepover?
Dusting of snow perfect, we've had one and v pretty it is. Hope you got to your hotel castles!
I gather the dreaded pox has passed then indith if cake in order? Yay. Dd and then ds3 poorly this week but hopefully both right by Xmas. Dp and I are so tired we can't make it out of bed. Just one more day of work tomorrow then I can relax. Found out yesterday have won funding I applied for with colleague, feeling v chuffed!
If I don't get on again to all a merry Christmas!

SatinShoes · 21/12/2010 09:01

Well done AQ!

Kids off due to snow so we've broken up for hols :) They are currenly watching cbeebies panto Grin

Later I need to go to supermarket to get a turkey, and increasing list of things Hmm

Indith · 21/12/2010 16:11

Jabber you are lovely, I hope the boys had a great time and that your nephew at least felt as though he had had a bit of a break!

AQ great news on the funding. Hope you are all feeling better by Christmas.

Did the dcs really open the number 22 of their calendars this morning? More a countdown to doomsday than a celebration Xmas Hmm

Satin hope the supermarket not too busy!

Almost all ready here, had a manic few days but feeling more in control now. Beef for the day is in the freezer as is the chocolate log. All alcohols bottled and in present bags. Marzipan and fondant chocolate mice are made and bagged up, doing the ganache ones today. House has been cleaned to within an inch of its life so that it just needs a quick swoosh between guests. Apart from the living room anyway, that is a job for tonight!

The question being asked in this house today is can dd sleep any worse? It is sooooo cold, got to -12 last night and since we live in the dark ages we can't have heating on low at night (I hate heating on at night so not normally a problem but even I would make an exception for this!) Anyway been putting off getting dd into a bed as she can be a pain in the arse to get to sleep at the best of times and then we have the many wakings but she is rather big and her cot is getting rather small, as soon as she rolls over she ends up with one side pressed up against the side of the cot and the duvet doesn't stay wrapped round so despite 2 duvets and 2 blankets I think she has still been getting cold.

This afternoon I took down her cot. Not even discussed it with dh Xmas Blush but I think in a bed there is more wriggle room without losing the duvet. Just need ot persuade her to actually go to sleep in it! She has no problem going to sleep in my bed so you wouldn't have thought it would be a problem but last time I tried she just climbed back into her cot Xmas Hmm hence making sure it isn't an option this time.

It is just soooo cold! I am fed up of being cold!

I would also like a chute from the coal store to my living room.

jabberwocky · 22/12/2010 01:28

AQ, that is awesome!

Satin, so an early start to the holiday break for you?

castles, hope things are well with the IL's.

Indith, that sounds brutal!! Why can't you have heat at night?

I can definitely sympathize with the sleeping problems. DS1 and 2 were both terrible but are much better now so hopefully it won't be much longer before your dd figures it out.

The boys loved having their cousin over. I think we are going to try for at least once a month. My nephew and his wife got take-out to eat after the twins went to sleep and said they did feel like they were able to enjoy their wedding anniversary :)

Happy Solstice everyone Xmas Grin

FiveColdRingsForSolo · 22/12/2010 01:43
