So, I've now read some of the sleep site which someone posted (great site!), and paid special attention to the bit which advised bringing baby's bedtime forward to between 6-7pm in order to get them to sleep for longer in the morning. YAY!!! He woke at 7am this morning, which is an improvement on his 5.30/6am awakenings.

Aw Smacs - at poor DD1 joining in. Aw.

Hey Manda, have you morphed into Pacific? What on earth's an annovulatory cycle - too tipsy to be arsed to Google it (yet, clearly not to tipsy to be arsed to figure out how to cross stuff out). Yep, Shroomer's had TWO glasses of wine, isn't used to it, partner's watching Tour de France for the 45th night in a row, AND she's up past 8pm. Dirty stop up. AND she's referring to herself in third person. AND she'll regret this in the morning...

Manda Methinks you and DP will be having a chat soon about future DS/DD.

shroom, manda is happy to inform you an annovulatory cycle is one where you do not ovulate. Good on you for having a drink - it's necessary if you're having to endure the tour de france.

Ooh, forgot to mention that James also seems to favour his left quite heavily. Given that lefthandedness (is that even a word?) has a prevelance of about one in nine or ten in the general population, it would be odd for so many of our babes to turn out as lefties. I myself am odd. I mean, a leftie

pixie Good luck, you complete and utter loon! I can't wait for your bfp and, yes, ALL your babies are belong to us.

Speaking of loons, sarah you wouldn't catch me cookin for myself such a huge number of people! Good luck, I'm sure it'll be fine as you always seem so capable at handling curve balls

IWCAS You're clearly a shocking racist! Happy to flash the indian delivery man twice but the chinese delivery man doesn't even get a glimpse? Shame on you! Equal opportunity flashing for ALL delivery drivers say I! Yummy, I quite fancy a chinese now... but I currently have lasagne from an amazing deli in the oven and DP is picking up salad and fattening treats galore from m&s as I type... I shall probably have to flash him too at some point this evening

MandaHugNKiss · 23/07/2010 21:32

Oh, sarah I forgot to say: yuk sung? SOunds more like karaoke gone wrong than something to eat (although if I were cooking it 'yuk' would be pretty accurate!)

evitas · 23/07/2010 22:10

manda I'm still laughing at your comment on IWCAS's delivery drivers

dont what a neighbour! And yes, I'll have my eyebrows done next week

sunshine that's a great menu. Can I join?

Smac well done what a big baby

Pixie hope your DD2 gets better. Can't wait for the result in 11 days What are the chances of having twins again?

night night

p.s still laughing at manda's comment.

Arcadie · 23/07/2010 22:11

Hey ladies. I'm home alone and drinking gin in the hope it might make him sleep...... (Ok it's pretty much all tonic with a wipe of gin round the rim but I feel rebellious). 16 weeks growth spurt leading to much awakening? Check. Misery owing to 16 week jabs? Check. Mummy so knackered she stops making milk by 5pm and has to resort to bottle? Check. Mummy with lovely friends who are concerned that she's running around too much so tok her two older kids off her hands yesterday pm so she could have a sit down? Check. And sniff slightly in a misty eyed I love my friends kinda way.

IWCAS P's treating you!? Good man.

Pixie Go BFP!!! Was thinking about you in an admiring way today. I assuredly can't cope with 3. And there you are with 5 and hoping for more. Hats off lady. hats off.

Manda at the disappointment. I'll be checking antenatal to see if you're there again soon!

PD Glad to see you back. Missed you. Hugs.

MummYElk What's the big finally woman????!

Arcadian News Potty training is sucking my will to live. The poo, people. The poo.....

MummyElk · 23/07/2010 22:50

my lovely friend who was due on the 11th has finally had her baby the day before she was due to be induced and its a girl (she has a boy as well) and she did it all by herself despite googling too much and worrying she couldn't go into labour on her own (induced last time) (rkd i kept using you as a massive example of Everything Is Possible) and bless her she called lil old me two hours after delivery to tell me in person!! so chuffed for her. anyway i completely couldn't stop myself writing an excited fbk status and of course now too many people are asking and AFAICS she hasn't posted the news yet on fbk so technically i should keep schtum. definitely. silly Melk. God i LOVE the newborn announcement bit, it's such an amazing time and you are on such a high, so special...

Can't post much more due to general over-excitement but rkdian potties can we help? what is happening? and where is the poo?!! nightmare.

As i type DD2 is sitting on DH having had a lovely feed, she's watching us both with such attention and fondness - and when we catch her eye, the SMILE, people, the smile!! love her.

well done all on general rolling/shushing back to sleep/party catering/GOSH tripping/actually managing to MN despite It All.....
More tomorrow.

scooby26 · 24/07/2010 20:31

Thanks manda. Short post from mobile in car enroute home from newport pagnell. Hope youre all well and having a relaxing weekend x

BookWormDad · 25/07/2010 05:13

Hi everyone

Sorry haven't posted for a bit, but still really getting to terms with the whole SAHD thing.

DD seems to be sleeping a little better. She now feeds at 8pm, 3am, 5am and 8am, and has been settling back down straight away after. She's not feeding as well in the daytime (she likes feeding from mummy much better than the bottles), but she's producing wet nappies so we're not too concerned. DW is expressing twice while she's at work (they have a hospital grade pump at her workplace) and is producing more than DD needs in a day, so the freezer is getting full for any emergencies/nights out etc. It been hard work keeping DD on 100% BM especially with DW going back to work, but we're very pleased to have kept it up.

We've bought DD a 'sippy cup' and I've been giving her her feed from that once a day. She actually chose it herself, grabbed it off the shelf, and she figured out how to use it by herself. We've given her some bits of fruit to hold, but she's not overly fussed so we;re going to hold off on BLW for a bit.

Thanks for the ideas about the sun. I think I'll try and get one of the stroller covers, rather than attempt sun cream since DD is prone to bad skin, but I guess at some point it will be unavoidable.

Teething seems to have abated for now. Which is a good thing since I put the teething ring in the sterilizer and it properly wicked-witch-of-the-west melted.

Hope you are all ok.

mawbroon · 25/07/2010 09:01

Morning all. Feeling vaguely human this morning after passing out in bed with ds2 about 8pm last night. I got up about 11pm to get changed into my jammies etc and slept until ds1 woke at 6.15am. I think ds2 did wake around 1.30am and 5.30am, but I'm not sure, but I do remember somebody phoning at 2AM FFS and it was a WRONG NUMBER

Ds1 and I were talking the other day about how many sleeps old he and ds2 are. Ds1 will be 5 in October, so at a rough approximation I told him he was around 1,500 sleeps old. I have realised that I have had around 1,500 broken nights in a row. NO WONDER I am so tired I am so glad I got my crap sleeper first.

Does anyone take their baby swimming? We have been going every week since ds1 had some swimming lessons, I need to keep going with it or he will lose interest. Anyway, ds2 seems to enjoy it and I wondered if anyone else does the dunking baby under water thing? I can't quite bring myself to shove my baby under the water, it seems to go against all my instincts, but I can see that he might be ok with it as he is really chilled.

Raining here today, so much for summer, it's been so miserable lately.

MandaHugNKiss · 25/07/2010 10:26

Maw s'funny you should ask about the dunking thing as I was doing some reading up on it this week! As of yet, James hasn't been swimming but we have DH's daughter next week so as a last minute thing I thouht we'd take her and my two DS's (DD flew off to tenerife yesterday with exDH's family... argh, can't think about it too much as I'll et anxious!) to Butlins next weekend. An hour away, with full on 'stuff to do' for two 12 year olds... great. There's a 'splashworld' thingy, one of those huge indoor swimming pool things with slides, rapides, wave machine, raft ride etc. Again, great fun for the older kids. But DP has recently seen some underwater baby photography and the accompanying blurb says how babies have a valave that shuts off and they automatically stop breathing so he got all excited saying he's going to do it with James.

I got all worried!

I know about hte valve but decided to look a bit further into it.

So, they DO automatically stop breathing BUT will continue to swallow. It seems the best time to introduce a baby to dunking is between 6 and 9 months but only IF they have had previous 'training' ie are confident/relaxed in the water anyway ad don't mind having water poured over their heads/faces. Otherwise you risk taking many steps back by traumatising them with a full on dunk first time out.

It's kinda common sense, really (apart from the swallowing bit and call me a snob but even IF James ahd been swimming before and didn't mind having the water poured over him I don't want rancid Butlins pool water with milions of weewees in it in his delicate little tummy which thus far has had breastmilk or 'only the best' organic food! Ah, darn it. I just realised I sound all pfb about him (even though he's my third!) but I really don't care. I'm sure the weewee in our local pool will be of a better quality once the time comes to dunk...

I think it's american and perhaps a touch 'hippy' but have a little read here: Baby Swimming

Oh and the baby wetsuit I ordered for him arrived yesterday

MummyElk · 25/07/2010 12:37

morning all
Swimming we've been waterbabying it since she was 7 weeks, and DD1 is an avid waterbaby (in fact we've just got out of the pool here in devon, lush).
the training stuff is spot on - it's good to get them accustomed to hearing the same words so they associate what's going to happen. As soon as I say "Thea, Ready, Go" she closes her eyes and waits for The Dunking! You can get them used to it in the bath tbh. Just say ", ready, go" and pour some water over their heads, and finish by wiping down their face. do it two or three times.
swimming-wise, i find dunking really easy but i'm a hardened bitch I just hold her with both hands at arms length, look straight at her, say ready go, and dunk her straight under and then pull her up to me. (i also release her so she can swim a bit but see how you go). It's the water covering the top of their heads that makes them hold their breath (diving reflex). DON'T DO IT IF THEY HAVE HICCUPS/THEY ARE CRYING.
Caveat: you can of course dunk them too long, they can't hold out for that long, and I am not a trained instructor. I would seriously recommend a proper course, it's brilliant fun! DD1 can swim pretty well and recently fell in the pool here, and she swam up to the surface and grabbed for the side - so it's not all baby bonding/beautiful moments in the water, i can assure you....
gotta go she's squeaking! My parting words about swimming are the blatently obvious: only do what you are happy with, it's just not worth dunking if you frighten the hell out of yourself.
But seriously, i'm a bit hard on thea - she has swum deep and long for a few weeks now and i think even our swimming teacher is a bit surprised how easily she takes it...
argh gotta go

BusyMissIzzy · 25/07/2010 12:43

I hope Rinders doesn't mind me posting this here, but she has a thread here and could possibly use our support.

angfirsttimer · 25/07/2010 15:25

Terrible news about Rinders father she has been through so much recently as I recall.

On the swimming front we have been going to a class since ds was 11 weeks, he is really beginning to love it, he has no problem being dunked and looks so cute 'swimming' under water with eyes wide open! He has been thrust under the shower since he was a week old when the poo was too explosive for a bit of cottonwool so he is used to water on his face!!

donttrythisathome · 25/07/2010 15:57

Poor Rinders.

Ah Mummyelk that's lovely about your friend and DDs smiles.

My DD is smiling like a loon now as well, and loves to have a good laugh. Half the time she's just waiting around in anticipation for us to make her laugh and sometimes starts laughing before we've even started doing the funny things. Awww.

Had another night out last night with a friend. Stuck to a half a bottle of wine this time. Had a fab time just chatting. Brighton was full of life and I felt young and free do you know what I mean?

evitas · 25/07/2010 20:16

Hi all,

poor Rinders, it's really sad

I've been at home all day at home because I have a colonoscopy tomorrow and need to "empty" my bowel.
I'll be sedated for the procedure and I'll have to stay all day in hospital.
I've been expressing to keep the supply and discharge the all the milk. I'll only be able to breastfeed again on Tuesday evening. I had some frozen milk and some formula will do it.

DS had his first food yesterday. I gave him baby rice and pure prunes. He loved it! Today he had pure spinach, potato and carrots (like a soup) and he also seemed to enjoy it.

Thank you all for your tips on baby swiming. You have inspired me to have a go

Hopefully I'll be able to be on-line on Tuesday.

x
