SO, the situation looks grim. Our taxes will rise and my mortgage payments will be unaffordable in the near future, particularly since we'll be taking home less.

Great. Wish I could move to Scotland.

Thanks, KSal

So sorry about your kitten, Ronshar

That bouncy thing is cool, csws.

ronshar · 07/05/2010 09:59

We are dooooooooommmmmmmmmeeeeeeeeeddddddd.

It was stomache churningly horrid to have GB as an unelected PM. Now we face the prospect of a totally un elected government. AAAARRRRGGGG.

Hell in a hand cart.
We will be the laughing stock of Europe. Even the Italians will laugh. The greeks might offer us handouts

StarExpat · 07/05/2010 10:07

lol if they have any left

StarExpat · 07/05/2010 10:11

So, is it likely that GB will be able to form coalition with lib dems, then?

ronshar · 07/05/2010 10:15

Nick Clegg has stated very clearly that he would NEVER work with GB. He was double crossed by GB a while back.
So the Labour party would have to get rid of GB if they want to work with Libs.
Or they could do what the Libs do all the time and just choose to do what ever it takes to get a bit of power.

ronshar · 07/05/2010 10:44

Nick Clegg just said he would work with the Conservatives as they have the most votes across the country.
That is good news for our country.

KSal · 07/05/2010 10:50

but he didn't say that... he just said they get to have first crack at the whip

StarExpat · 07/05/2010 11:30

That may be better - lib dems working with conservatives to make compromises instead of us/them mentality with libdems&labour then conservatives. Right?
BUT, isn't it that gb gets to try to work out a coalition but if he can't then dc gets a try to be PM - which means he doesn't have to form a coalition with anyone? or have I got it wrong?

KSal · 07/05/2010 11:32

I think you are right star, but in the interests of getting anything done in the next parliament he probably should try to form some sort of alliance.

StarExpat · 07/05/2010 11:35

Do conservatives think that way, though? I can see dc thinking, look at all the blue, we're the "majority" - let's push our stuff through... I know that sounds horrible, but from all that I've read regarding their policies...etc... it just doesn't look promising to have dc as pm.

KSal · 07/05/2010 11:41

things still have to be voted on in parliament though and he'll need support to do that

ConservativesShouldWinSurely · 07/05/2010 11:44

Which policies in particular of dc's are you worried about star?
Some taxes will go up regardless of who gets in. They need to to get the country out of the mess that GB and TB have made of it over the last 13 years or so.

StarExpat · 07/05/2010 11:55

Well, the three that spring to mind immediately are:

  • taking away preschool funding (doesn't bother me personally so much but will affect a lot of people on the whole).
  • marriage recognized in taxes - so that may mean we'd be taxed even more as together it is a higher salary.
  • Dh's job being at risk as a teacher in a state school. And... well, education in general... maybe I'm reading biased stuff online and seeing biased stuff on TV, but from what I gather, it doesn't look so great for education under conservative power. (again, won't affect me, personally... but a majority of the country).
Perhaps I'm reading this all wrong... just a few things I've gathered.
KSal · 07/05/2010 12:01

I am stepping away now we are getting into actual politics rather than just the mechanics of a hung parliament

StarExpat · 07/05/2010 12:05

ok let's leave the actual politics for another thread, then Sorry about that. Not the time or place.

ConservativesShouldWinSurely · 07/05/2010 12:34

I think that you've been reading too much biased stuff, probably on MN star.
Marriage being recognised in taxes is a good thing for you as a married person, as it means that you'll get a higher joint allowance!
And I've not heard anything about taking away funding for pre-school - where did you get that from?

StarExpat · 07/05/2010 12:45

I don't know
I don't read most of the political stuff on mn tbh. But I do'nt know what's biased and what's not here... like in the US, I know never to listen to FOX news... and that even CNN is a bit over dramatic. But here, everyone seems to monotone and straight faced wording on websites is so "tell it like it is" and totally "un-dramatic" that it's hard to tell who is to be trusted.

I heard, somewhere that they would take preschool funding from anyone earning more than 40K household income... which is not a lot.

As far as taxes, I thought the higher you earn, the more taxes are taken from you...? Is that not true?

ConservativesShouldWinSurely · 07/05/2010 13:04

oh everything here is biased star - you just have to work out which way for any particular source!

I think that this article explains the married persons thing quite well - you only really need to read the first few small paragraphs.

Yes, the more you earn the more tax you pay, regardless of who is in power, and just the way it should be tbh.

StarExpat · 07/05/2010 13:11

It is the way it should be... agreed definitely. But, I'd like my salary to be separate from DH's. We're married but still individuals and we keep separate bank accounts. + 1 joint account for mortgage, bills...etc. I'll have a read.
It's difficult here because everyone seems straight faced and honest. I feel like it's easier to tell the American liars

coconutfeet · 07/05/2010 13:33

Ronshar - So sorry to hear about your kitten.

Gosh - it's all so uncertain at the moment isn't it? I've been busy cooking and glued to the radio 4 analysis.

Star - whoever got in was always going to have to make massive cuts. It was just a question of who would cut what. I don't think any of the parties have been very clear on that issue so we'll have to wait and see.

Also, you'd benefit from the married person's tax thingy. It's people like me who are living in sin who will lose out!

Talking of women in the BNP, there's a Sikh guy who's very vocal in the party too. He's very anti-Muslim but doesn't seem to realise that actually they hate him too, just a bit less.

StarExpat · 07/05/2010 13:42

Read the article. Have to LOL though... £150 is not going to allow me to stay at home (as the article suggests). Nice thought, though and a good policy overall.. I did misinterpret before.

coconutfeet · 07/05/2010 13:43

On a different topic, CSWS can I just talk slow cookers with you? I think it was you who mentioned that your slow cooker has some sort of timer on it. Which model do you have and would you recommend it? I'm thinking it might be time to upgrade our cheapo Tesco one and get one that will switch itself off (or rather to warm) as we're out of the house for too long during the day on work days. I was using a plug-in timer but I don't want to food to sit on the side in the warm weather before it switches itself on, if that makes sense.

50ftQueenie · 07/05/2010 16:37

Our slow cooker has a timer Feet. You set it to cook for a set amount of time (usually 9 hours for us!) then it switches to keep warm until you turn it off..... I'll check the make....... Tefal. I honestly think that if DH and I divorced he'd give up all access rights to the DC if it meant he could keep the slow-cooker.

I'm not going to talk politics. It's a very fast way to fall out with people and I don't fancy falling out with the tory girls you guys.

Oh good. M has wandered in eating from a bag of icing sugar.....
