Thanks for your advice on the pox Lee and GS - I will ask the doctor about the test - I certainly don't want to risk getting it now!

DD has just been sick again... she was thirsty having not kept anything down this morning so I fed her as slowly as I could let her - she was tired too... then she fell asleep in my arms so I held her gently slightly elevated for half and hour whilst she slept so the digestion could kick in. As soon as she woke I held her gently and it all came up in a matter of seconds with no cough. We were both covered again.

She still seems happy enough but I am getting worried now. Any advice or thoughts? She's got to be getting thirsty - should I try water at some point? Sorry if I am starting to sound panicky - she's my first and she's not been poorly before... and normally such a happy thing. Could it be something I ate? Thanks in advance.

hendo77 · 18/04/2010 12:32

Don't know if this helps at all? I would probably check temperature and ring health visitor or NHS direct if worried just to be on the safe side and for some reassurance maybe.

Hope she feels better soon.

GoldenSnitch · 18/04/2010 12:36

Are you BF or FF?

I'm guessing from the "something I ate" you must be BF...

Just keep feeding her. Even if it stays down for only a minute or two she will digest some of it. And as she feeds more and more, your supply will get lower so she'll only be getting small amounts which should be easier for her to deal with.

Watch the soft spot on her head. If that starts to look sunken, she'll need some cooled, boiled water but if not, just carry in with the breastmilk. Your milk will become more watery if you feed very regularly anyway which is good.

There's stuff in breastmilk which will help settle her tummy and replenish the bacteria in her gut to help her fight off any infection quicker. Keep an eye on her temp too. Anything over 38 degrees and I would maybe find an out of hours doctor or check with NHS Direct just to be on the safe side. I think it's likely to just be a tummy bug though.

It's so scary when they get poorly the first time. Just keep giving her cuddles and she'll be fine.

If you are FF then she might need water a bit sooner as obviously, the consistency won't change but I'm not sure on that one.

Hope she's better soon.

Klerka · 18/04/2010 12:41

Thanks for your speedy response Hendo...

She seems tired... I just gave a little more milk and put her for a nap on our bed (her moses basket has been stripped for cleaning!) ... and she's gone off fine. Going to fight the temptation to sit and watch her sleep... DH is home and doesn't leave for work for a couple of hours so we will see how she seems when she wakes.

It's impossible to tell with breastfeeding how much they are getting and the vomit always seems like a lot doesn't it... her fontenelle is not sunken though.

Klerka · 18/04/2010 12:45

Thanks GS - we x posted.

Yes, am breastfeeding... I am drinking some mother's milk tea. The fennel and things it contains helps digestion too.

I feel a bit better from reading your replies that I am doing the right things . She hasn't got a temperature either.

I hope she is better before DH leaves - it's just calming having him here!

GoldenSnitch · 18/04/2010 12:46

I've found with Catherine that you can tell when she's vomited a whole feed as it goes from milky coloured to yellow/carrot coloured as she brings up the last bits.

It does always seem like a lot of milk for a teeny baby whatever though.

GoldenSnitch · 18/04/2010 12:47

Maybe try ditching the tea?

I tried Fenugreek and that made Catherine sick. (hence the knowledge on puke colour!)

As soon as I stopped taking it, she stopped being sick.

Klerka · 18/04/2010 12:53

Oh! Thought I was helping with the tea! Only just been drinking it since about 11am and she was sick before I did... . Think I'll stick to water then!!

Thanks again!

GoldenSnitch · 18/04/2010 12:58

It's unlikely to be the tea if you started drinking it after she was sick. Was just a thought as Fenugreek definitely affected Catherine.

Although on the off chance that it might upset her tummy, it might be worth waiting till she's felling better to try it?

AmazingBouncingFerret · 18/04/2010 13:05

Ahhhh days like this make me want to set up home in a beer garden and get completely wankered (to put it politely!)

Went to Belton House yesterday, they were holding the int horse trials there, such an amazing day. Hope this weather keeps up for our holiday in Devon.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 18/04/2010 13:07

I hope kings isnt stranded. Doesnt little Persephone have special milk? Wouldnt it be hard to get hold of it if she isnt in the UK?

hendo77 · 18/04/2010 13:28

ABF I'm with you on the beer garden idea! Although as bfing still am probably just going to drink watered down Pimms all day - it's got fruit in it right so it must be good for everyone...?!?!

Claire236 · 18/04/2010 14:03

Klerka - hope dd is keeping some milk down. Excellent advice from GS. ds2 has reflux issues so know what you mean about the sick, looks like gallons.

Beer gardens. You're making me wish I was in the UK now. There's nothing like a good Brit pub garden in the summer. It's gorgeous here today.

Hendo77 - I do believe Pimms counts as one of your 5 a day.

ABF - not sure if Persephone is still on special milk, I know she was but now she's being weaned I'm not sure. Hopefully kings took shedloads with her.

Had a bit of a moment the other day about only having bf ds2 for a week. 2 friends were talking about bf as one of them has a 2 week old & is struggling & the other ex bf for 4 months. While I had very good reasons for quitting so soon from a distance of 4 months I feel like I could have tried harder. Funny how time makes everything looks different.

Thanks Claire.

I hope Kings isn't stranded. She's had enough to deal with recently without that!!

DH took DS to Silverstone today to watch some formula 2 so me and Catherine have had a girly day. We went to a garden center and bought some plants for the front garden. We'd just finished planting them when the boys got home. DH still hasn't noticed that anythings changed!!!

DS starts pre school on Tuesday. I'm dreading leaving him for the first time

Klerka · 18/04/2010 19:07

Hi,
Just an update. Without tmi... a day of quite a lot of vomit really! After her two hour nap I thought she was looking a bit better. I was just talking to her and then bam - another load... everywhere. I have been feeding her little and often all day - I have sterilised a bottle in case I feel the need to give her some water later. No temperature just not a happy baby.

So she's in bed now - I am trying not to strap the monitor to my ear - DH is at work so I think it'll be a bath and bed for me too as who knows what the night might bring. But sure it's just a tummy bug and hopefully she will be much better tomorrow.

Thanks again for all your lovely words of advice!

hendo77 · 19/04/2010 07:22

How was she last night and this morning Klerka? Hope she's better today...

GoldenSnitch · 19/04/2010 07:36

How is she Klerka?

Klerka · 19/04/2010 07:46

Morning all,
I went to bed really nice and early in case of a bad night... she woke me at midnight and I fed her - then she went back down fine. Heard DH come to bed around 4am which can sometimes disturb her but didn't. Next thing I know she is talking to herself and I check the time - it's 7am! Big smiles for Mummy... a wet nappy - then another smile and a poop!!

So clean napp'ied - we're downstairs now and she seems much better! Phew. I have lots of milk for her to slowly get through and we will obviously take it very steady at home today as it's only early but I can tell by face that she feels better. She still has a little cough - but fingers crossed... Thanks again - I must have sounded in a right flap yesterday!

sparklycheerymummy · 19/04/2010 09:37

glad dd is better klerka..... they are such a worry at times! we constantly have the cot propped slightly now at it seems to help ds sleep better so must be helping his reflux.... though since having some solids he isnt puking half as much.

ds rolled over from back to front yesterday..... he was naked so i think he found it easier than when nappied and clothed!! have bought some of those pampers bed mats and let him roll about on them..... he likes being naked!!!!!!

Claire236 · 19/04/2010 09:48

Klerka - glad dd is feeling better

sparkly - I was amazed at the difference starting to wean made to ds2 reflux. I remember kings saying her dd benefited from starting to wean too. You can see why early weaning is sometimes suggested for refluxy babies.

In for a rough week with ds2 who has completely lost the ability to go to sleep on his own after the last 2 weeks of ds1 being at home, routine being out of whack & being ill. He's finally gone off in his cot after nearly 15 mins of crying (didn't leave him all that while btw, was going in every 5 mins & settling him then putting him back down) I remember a friend telling me when I had ds1 that any change in sleep routine takes 3 days to implement & I certainly found that to be the case with him. ds2 is a law unto himself mind you so we'll see.

Hi everyone!

We made it back - we drove so no problems with planes - although we did leave at 6am just to be absolutely sure we didn't miss our tunnel.

Yes Persephone is on neocate still - wll be on it until at least 1 I think... I actually took what I thought was loads with me but we ran out so yesterday she had to have a day on aptamil pepti which is lactose free - not ideal but better than normal. Luckily the pharmacy in switzerland had it.

Just quickly scanned all posts - Sparkly - so sorry you have been through it a bit in the past week - miserable...

You will all be glad to know that yet another disaster has befallen me. Well, perhaps disaster is slightly OTT but it certainly feels a bit like one to me. On the first day of skiing - Monday - we were out with my brother and his girlf who can't ski. She was with my brother and I was underneath them on the mountain. She turned up the mountain and slid backwards onto my brother, who I thought would catch her but didn't. they both fell backwards onto me and my ski was caught underneath them whilst i fell backwards. Knee twisted and popped and agony ensued - I was screaming. Had to get blood wagon off the mountain and then ambulance to the clinic in the centre of Verbier. Then xray and brace and crutches. Had an MRI scan on Weds and the results are: totally snapped lateral colateral ligament (the one on the inside side of your knee), almost totally snapped cruciate ligament (the one which hold the knee together) and bone contusion and swelling. So nightmare really. A lot of pain and couldn't look after P at all - luckily we had a nanny. Not to mention totally ruined holiday which I had been looking forward to so much. I had a couple of meltdowns as I was just so cross and felt it was so unfair. I have to wear the brace for 3 weeks - knee completely unstable and still painful although am told to walk on it - so at least I can look after P now, with difficulty. Have to have an operation to repair the ligaments too then 6 months of physio. Just what I needed. and P has her second op next week.

Not ideal and today have so much to sort and unpack and knee hurts a lot after 10 hours in car yesterday!

Am a bit fed up with it all tbh - husband working super hard again and I didn't see him anywhere near as much as I would had I been skiing with him. I made him go and ski most days as he loves it so much but it meant we didn't see each other as much which we so needed. Feels like the least relaxing holiday ever!

Still, there are worse things that could happen and we're all safe and well!

BexJ78 · 19/04/2010 13:24

Oh no Kings what a nightmare. Hope your knee is not too painful.

all fine here although it is bloody raining again after a lovely weekend.
Anna is doing well although she has started waking through the night. she used to go through easily from 8.30pm until 7am, but for the last three nights had been waking up at about 3/4am. I thought perhaps that it might have been too warm for her, but it was cooler again last night and she still woke up at 3.30. Gave her a quick feed and then she went through until 9am?! What is going on?? Any suggestions anyone?

She has her 4month jabs tomorow...not looking forward to it but needs must.
anyway, hope you are all ok.
xxx

legscrossed · 19/04/2010 14:06

kings........ ouch

bex.......... similar probs, LO used to do 7pm bed midnight feed then thru till 7-8 am no probs.
But now has disturbed episodes around 10pm 2am 5am, its random.

She seems bored of her milk, tongues n bites teat instead of suck (has a cold too) have tentertivly started some veg purees and she seems to love the idea of food and spoons and eating!
But only 5 months ish so dont want to go mad or any further than veg really.
Could just be illness I guess or weaning cue?

GoldenSnitch · 19/04/2010 18:08

Had Catherine weighed again today. She's 4.92kgs or 10lbs 13ozs! That puts her under the 2nd percentile line now!! Apparently, she was under 2nd percentile last time I went but they plotted her wrong on the graph so it looked like she was still just under 9th. HV didn't seem concerned and asked me to bring her back in 4 weeks.

She still looks healthy and is growing out of her clothes at a rate of knots!

She's whingey but I think that's due to teeth.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 19/04/2010 18:51

I had Elizabeth weighed aswell today. She is 14lb 11oz so she is still following the 75th. Im going to try taking her to a totstime session at the early years centre tomorrow whilst Jake is at nursery. Should be interesting!

She rolled over this morning! I think she shocked herself when she did it aswell because she was happily babbling then when she went over she went silent and then started grizzling!

Snitch, When Jake started nursery in January it was quite hard I must admit (dont want to worry you sorry!) there would be tears in when I dropped him off but the teachers always reassured me that he was fine a few minutes after I left. At my nursery they usually sit down on the sofas and read quietly with the tearful ones until they calm down. Is he doing the 2 hour sessions for 4 days and 1 full day? I was really worried about the full day because I thought it would be too long for him but he seems ok with it

Kings, Im so sorry to hear about your knee! I hope you have plenty of RL support so you can get better soon.

Sparkly, When Jake was little he had relux, it was bloody awful, I weaned him at 4 and a half months and it made the world of difference.

Bex, could Anna be going through a growth spurt maybe?
