Starting new thread before we run out of room. Now to link from the old one. Could be interesting

Morning all,
Welcome back Hendo - glad you had a lovely time, despite the sleeping issues... the blw sounds like it is going well. I checked out the photo - that is one nice piece of broccoli! Made me wonder if I am cutting Holly's too small and making life harder for her but courgette was a hit here last night... chunks went down (and through!)

I realise I am a rubbish cook... had to throw out the first little batch of broccoli yesterday as it was steamed to within an inch of it's life. I normally forget when I am cooking something until I smell it, normally burnt! And this morning at 5.30am I was making some banana cupcakes for DH and thought the mixture was different, a bit thick to stir but was going to go with it - until I realised I hadn't put the mashed banana in. Waaay too early to attempt baking!

Meeting a friend in town today for lunch - although it's at the restaurant I work at, I don't think I am ready to give DD some food at the table in public - she's bound to make a real mess.

Ethelred - I missed the post of your spa day Have a fabulous time tomorrow.

hendo77 · 04/06/2010 08:52

Klerka, I was wondering if I was making things too big for her as despite having been thinking about this for ages I have the absolute fear of her choking! How big did you make your courgette chunks?

AlCrowley · 04/06/2010 09:11

is anyone else having trouble viewing this thread? I keep getting a message which says "A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script: www.mumsnet.com/js/se/jquery.js:12"

I don't get it anywhere else, not even on other threads. I get it on the main pc and my netbook too. I'm wondering if it's because the thread is so long now.

Is it just me?

AlCrowley · 04/06/2010 09:22

I've still not gotten around to reading the book, but I'm coming to the conclusion that BLW scares me. I'm sure I'd be less worried if Catherine could have my full attention at mealtimes but often I'm helping Alex with his food too or chatting to him. I've done a baby first aid course and am fairly sure that I could help her if she choked but I'm worried that I wouldn't notice fast enough if I was watching him!!

So I think I'm going to carry on mushing until she's over 6 months or can sit up properly by herself (she tends to fall forwards if left on her own atm) with the odd bit of food in her net thingy.

I think she definitely needs the food though. She was really grotty this morning, even after her feed, so I gave her some apple puree while Alex and I had our breakfast and since then she's been happy and smiley.

What's everyone doing about sterilising? I'm sure when I had Alex, they said that after 6 months, dishwashing was enough. But we didn't have a dishwasher at the time so I sterilised to a year. I'm doing trays and bowls but I keep forgetting to sterilise spoons so I've just been using them straight out of the drawer She seems OK so far

hendo77 · 04/06/2010 09:55

I'm not getting error messages here when loading this thread. I have it set up to show on pages with only 25 messages per page rather than all on one long page. I don't know if that makes any difference, or how you are viewing it though...?

Not sterlising anything here. Weaning lady said not to bother after 6 months as they put everything in their mouths anyway. If I was using bottles or dummies I might sterilise teats, but then again I'm quite lazy so I might not...

Imogen is waking every 2.5/3 hours at night for feeds again and doesn't seem to be feeding for very long ever any more. I've tried making her wait, but it doesn't seem to make any differnce (and she just screams and whinges a lot during the waiting!). I am thinking about introducing some purees along with the finger foods, but maybe should give it a little bit more time first and not expect things to happen immediately!!!

hendo77 · 04/06/2010 09:56

Having said that, trying to post that message it went all funny....

AlCrowley · 04/06/2010 10:10

Just doubles checked. I've definitely got it set to 25 messages a page but I have noticed that sometimes it does this and sometimes it shows in all 1 page.

This thread seems to be all one page at the moment as I have no previous/next button at the bottom - very confusing!

I'm glad we're doing purees along with the net thing - especially as we're using the net thing as she can't be getting much more than the taste through it. She'd just get frustrated I think if I left her to feed herself.

Feel less bad about being lax with the sterilising now, thanks Hendo I was contemplating not bothering doing the ice cube trays and blender this morning but made myself do it anyway. Might not bother next time beacuse as you say, she's putting everything she can get hold of in her mouth anyway!

AlCrowley · 04/06/2010 10:12

double checked! Damn random 's'.

Now I've posted I have the First|Previous|Next|Last buttons back again though

Klerka · 04/06/2010 10:39

Hendo - I chopped a fingers' length of courgette then quartered it - obviously they come in different sizes but I would say it was thicker than a £2 coin iyswim. Courgette doesn't shrink when steamed so it looked quite chunky to me but she actually got on better with it. She gagged a bit last night but I just took a long deep breath in and then out again (read that somewhere) and by then she was fine, just gave her some water to sip on. Obviously gagging is our natural reflex - not choking but it's hard not to leap up. Al - I would be the same as you if I had another LO to be watching at the same time probably. We use that net thingy out on the go sometimes to be safe.

She's definitely not eating for hungers' sake right now - just interest and mouthing, although some is going down!

Re sterilising... I am not sterilising anything just cleaning and rinsing with really hot water. I am much more relaxed than I thought I would be!

No problems here with the thread... yet...

Claire236 · 04/06/2010 15:51

I'm still sterilising bottles but nothing else. When I started weaning I put the ice cube trays & bits in boiling water for 10 mins but don't do that anymore. Most of his bowls can go in the dishwasher but spoons can't so I just wash them by hand. I do wash up in scalding hot water though, well it doesn't scald me obv but should dh moan if he puts his hands in water I've run to wash up.

Have been giving ds2 random bits of food for him to hold. He loves yorkshire pudding. Not impressed by cucumber. Have made some ice lollies for him just from pureed pear & apple as he loves anything ice cold.

OP posts:
hendo77 · 04/06/2010 16:30

Good idea on the ice lollies Claire - I've got some ice lolly moulds and just make them with orange squash for me, but that sounds much nicer!

I am hiding upstairs at the moment, trying to ignore the screaming while dh tries to convince Imogen to drink formula from either a bottle or her sippy cup. She managed about 50 mls earlier before screaming herself to sleep (but then slept for ages so couldn't have been starving hungry!). It seems to have gone quiet now, so either she's drinking it, or he's given up for a bit and is playing. Every time she sees me though she starts up again... oh dear, fingers crossed as I could do with her taking something so that I perhaps don't have to get up every 2.5 hours each night...

LaDiDaDi · 04/06/2010 21:00

Hope that you got Imogen settled hendo, I think that I will be in the same pickle in a couple of weeks!

I won't be sterilising anything, when I have expressed and given ds ebm from a bottle I've just washed all of the stuff up in v. hot soapy water.

Had a huge garden clear up yesterday and today I managed to paint one fence with a power spray thingy. It looks quite good now it's dried but I was a bit worried when I was painting it as it quite literally looked shit . Will hopefully get the other side done next week but need to buy some more paint first. Then I'm going to stain the decking, or at least that's my plan.

Sorry you're having probs with the thread Al, hope it gets sorted for you. I got a new phone today but it's not working, I've rang them and they are going to send another out, they immediately said "oh, it's the phone" whereas I assummed that I was just not doing something right.

What would you do about a very good, longstanding friend who you know is having fertility problems and who you suspect is not answering your calls? Getting worried about her.

Lee - screaming car journeys are the worst thing I think. Imogen was also ridiculously happy to be home and definitely recognises our house and her room! Fingers crossed that by July he'll be bigger and more easily entertained in the car for you...

Thanks LaDiDaDi - dh took her out to the garden for 10 minutes to calm her, then tried again. She eventually drank about 3 ozs and was then quite happy again and played nicely until feed before bedtime. Think we're going to try again tomorrow as well, but will see. I'm back to work at the end of July and so need someone else to be able to feed her!

Could you send your friend an e-mail or text just letting her know you are worried about her and are there for her and that you'd love to hear from her when she's ready?

AlCrowley · 04/06/2010 22:25

We've had a lovely day today. Got loads done this morning - loads of washing and a few trays of purees as the veg box arrived first thing - then went over to my friends house for an afternoon in the sun. Got the children slathered in sun cream and then into sun suits and sat in her enormous garden with paddling pools out and had a great time.

DH was home at dinner time so I tried Catherine with some steamed brocolli which she loved. I've got some great pictures of her munching away. Was a nightmare to clean up afterward though. It went everywhere!

Even managed a really comfortable 5k run tonight too. Felt like I could have gone further - which is good as I have a 10k to do on Sunday!! Not run that far since before Catherine was born so more than a little worried but I'll do my best and see how far I get.

AlCrowley · 04/06/2010 22:30

Oh and LaDiDaDi, I think Lee and Hendo's advice is good. Could you mail her to say you're there if she needs you and get a mutual friend to check her too just to out your mind at rest if she doesn't reply?

hendo77 · 05/06/2010 07:56

Woooooohooooooo! Imogen appears to have worked out how to roll from back to front finally. I'm hoping it isn't just a one off, I turned away and back again and there she was up on her front trying to get to all sorts of non-baby safe items!!! We gave her lots of cheers...

Last night was a slightly better night - woke up every 3 hours to start but 1.45 was last wake up and then slept from 2 am until 7am!!!!!!! Shame I woke up twice in that time...

Glad to hear you had such a lovely day Al, we have a little garden and sat outside for dinner with Imogen and she played nicely out there while we did lots of gardening, it's sooooo nice to be outside and so much more interesting for the LOs - Imogen loves the birds and the leaves moving int he breeze.

Definitely not a one off, she's gone over again!!!!

Moosy · 05/06/2010 08:57

Well done Imogen on the rolling! Fizzy still hasn't rolled either way, although if I put her on her front and put her arms in front of her she will flip over but without me helping her arms she just arches her back up and squeals! She cen sit up unaided though, she can't sit herself up or anything clever like that, but if I sit her up she stays there reliably. She's sleeping through nearly every night too, though last night it was too hot for her and she didn't go to sleep until 11.20, in the end I had to stand in the porch for 20 minutes to cool her down and jiggle her to sleep. She woke up sweaty this morning so I think today might be quite hard too.

hendo77 · 05/06/2010 09:08

Thanks Moosy! Good sitting it sounds like from Fizzy. It's a pain when it's too hot for them at night isn't it? Hopefully it will be cooler tonight, although I'm a bit worried about all the thunderstorms predicted, not sure that's going to go down well with Imogen, especially as I hate them!

Imogen has just gone straight to sleep for her nap, I put her down, walked out the room and nothing since. That never happens, there's usually a right old battle of some sort for 10 minutes!!! Right, I'm going to get some stuff done quickly...

LaDiDaDi · 05/06/2010 09:10

Yay for Imogen!!

Will try to talk to the other two friends who form a little group with the one who is struggling with fertility. The trouble is that we were all together for a coffee last Sat. pm and afterwards me and one of the others both thought that M seemed like she wasn't her usual self so I was tasked with giving her a ring to see how she was, haven't really managed that! Will get one of the others to try too, one is pregnant though so will have to be the other one. Just feel so for her and want to be her friend.

Klerka · 05/06/2010 10:21

Morning all,
Well done Imogen - on the rolling - AND the nap this morning!

Lee - so sorry about the last part of your journey home. We don't have a car but occasionally borrow my Dad's ... it's awful as you feel like you can do less to settle them than normal and you HAVE to get home obviously. Like Hendo said, hopefully by July he'll be more comfortable with the car for your journey.

Sorry about your friend LaDiDaDi, I can only repeat what others have said and suggest a quick email, or another friend to try to contact her. I hope she's ok.

The afternoon in the garden sounds lovely Al, and congrats on your run - I am in awe of you... what time is your run tomorrow?

Had a nice lunch out with a friend yesterday - fell heavily off my diet... had a knickerbocker glory (well, it was new on the menu and I get 50% discount, what would you do?!?) it was delicious. DD had some cucumber sticks on the go for her gums, she faces me in her pram so I was watching her, when she decided it's boring to hold it and just sucked away, no hands! It was funny to watch, once I decided not to freak and it was very unlikely she'd suck the whole thing down. I will put a photo on my profile.

AlCrowley · 05/06/2010 20:12

Run is at 10.45 tomorrow. Looks like it's going to be raining which is better than heat like today at least. Hoping to make the full 10k but haven't run further than 6k in training and the course is a lot bumpier than I am used to so I'm not sure if I'll be able to. Keep having to remind myself that I had a c-section (ie big abdominal surgery) 5 1/2 months ago otherwise I get very frustrated as I was running 11k regularly before I fell pregnant with Catherine. Still feel a little disappointed with myself that I'm not back there yet. Had to wait for 3 months after the section to start running again so I suppose I've only been training for 10 weeks though...

Took a great photo of Catherine today. I'd dressed her in one of Alex's old sunsuits and then went looking for photo's of him wearing it. Realised that he was only 1 day older than she is today in his photo so we did our best to recreate it. I found the same blanket to lay her on and dug out the same toys. It's amazing how similar and yet how completely different they look all at the same time. Very cute

hendo77 · 05/06/2010 20:26

You should be amazingly proud of yourself rather than disappointed, especially after major surgery less than 6 months ago!!! I have barely walked any distance, let along broken into a trot!!! If you're being sponsored you should post the link, then I can sponsor you and feel less guilty for doing nothing myself...

Claire236 · 05/06/2010 20:30

Even attempting running 10k after only 10 weeks training & having had a baby is impressive. Be proud of yourself however far you get. I bet you'll surprise yourself & do the whole 10k though. Good luck.

I've done something similar with ds2 in an outfit which was ds1s & which we've got a gorgeous photo of him in. Comparing the 2 the only way you can tell the difference is that ds2 has got ridiculous amounts of hair.

Spent a lovely couple of hours at a local outdoor pool today. It was ds2s first go in the pool & he enjoyed it after his initial shock at the chilly water. He fell asleep in the 5 min drive home & then slept for over 2 hours at which point I had to wake him up out of fear he wouldn't sleep tonight.

I wasn't going to be cheeky enough to post the link but being as you've asked....

I'll put it on the facebook page as it's in my real name.

Thank you for your support
