Thought I'd start a Post-Natal thread as there are so many of us now sorry about the uninspired name.
Well I am slowly realising the sleepless nights thing is no myth - VERY tired!

OP posts:

hi ive just uploaded new pics of my ds2 and both grandsons if anyonw wants to see

Zeeky · 21/10/2010 04:48

Stinky I love the name Wilhelmina (I'm a big fan of the character with the same name in Ugly Betty!) & think you're very brave to go with it despite other people's opinions. I really liked the name Stanley for George, but everyone I mentioned it to, especially my mum, were horrified that I would even consider it, and I bowed to the pressure :(

George is very similar to Billie with sleep. He loves his cot. Sleeps in a darkened room in a grobag Sutherland a light show music box. Morning nap anywhere from 30mins to 2 hrs. Always has a long afternoon nap of 2 hrs+ at around 1pm. If he's not had enough sleep he will cry on waking otherwise he lies there playing with his hands until I go and check him. His napping is a revelation as DS1 was an awful daytime sleeper - had to be bopped/rocked to sleep until he was 6mths when he started having a dummy & only slept for a max of 30mins at a time. It meant it was really difficult to get any decent routine going. He did sleep longer if we were out and about so used to do a lot of shopping & visitng friends for coffee, whereas Geoge won't sleep so well if I do this! Despite G's good sleep habits in the daytime, he is still waking at night Sad

Mistymoo · 21/10/2010 10:00

Hi all. Quick question. Does everyone use a grobag?

I do sometimes but was worried that J was cold last night. His hands were frozen and so when he did wake up I took him out of grobag and took him in with us.

Do you think I should put a blanket on as well as grobag or just use blankets?

ilovesprouts · 21/10/2010 10:05

my dd uses a grow bag ,for her ds1 with a long sleve vest and a blanket ,but he still kicks it off :)

HopHopALady · 21/10/2010 11:06

Both DD and DS are big Grobag fans. Ds's hands are quite cold at night at the moment but his body is warm - we put him in a long sleeved bodysuit and a sleepsuit and then into a 2.5 tog. He's sleeping really well so I'm not worried.

DD's (2.5 yo) room is even colder so we've bought a thermostat-controlled radiator. If it drops below 16 in there, the rad comes on to warm things up again. And it switches itself off when it rises above 16. She's also in a 2.5 tog but wears only long sleeved pjs but her hands are warm in the mornings.

Zeeky · 21/10/2010 11:22

Yes I love grobags. Even though their face & hands may feel cold, their bodies are kept the right temp. DS1 was in one until he went into a proper bed & could put his covers back on himself.

You can always tuck a blanket across their legs if you think they are still too cold.

nicnacinoonoo · 21/10/2010 17:58

mitsy iv been having the same problem here, Kacie has been waking around five mumbling to herself and i think it is because she is cold. i have just gone out today and bought one of those more furry feeling babygrows to see if this will keep her warmer so fingers crossed for tonight.
also wondering if it is ok to put a thin hat on them at night now if they are still bald like kacie Blush or if that is still a no no? her poor bald little head must get so cold now its so chilly at night.

nicnacinoonoo · 21/10/2010 17:59

love growbags though Grin

harverina · 21/10/2010 23:03

We use sleeping bags too. Eilidh is in a vest, baby grow and 2.5 tog. For the past couple of nights we have also put on a sheet too - our room is never below 18 degrees but I felt that it was colder plus it seems to have stopped her from rolling over so much. If the temp here gets lower I am also going to put one cellular blanket over Eilidh too. Just up to the op of her chest and well tucked in.

Its so weird that we started talking about this - my mum and MIL keep asking if my DD is warm enough in the sleeping bag. They just can't get their head around it at all. My mum keeps asking when I will be covering Eilidh with a quilt...aaarrggghhh!!!

Eilidh's hands are sometimes freezing during the night and in the morning. We have tried putting on scratch mittens to see if this helps but she ends up sucking them so much that they are soaking! I think that its normal for hands to be cold - I check Eilidh's temp but touching the back of her neck.

Feeding and naps have been much better. I have started putting Eilidh in her cot for naps even if she is awake. So far she hasnt cried, just shouted and moaned but then gone to sleep Smile. Yesterday she slept for 2 hours in the morning and today she slept for 1.5 hours in the morning. I wonder if I was leaving her till she was over tired before and this is why she didn't sleep for long [hmmm]?

Tonight Eilidh just was not happy - she fed until she fell asleep but every time I went to put her in bed she screamed. She eventually went to bed at 10pm Sad. Last night she slept from 7.30pm till 5.30am. Why is there no consistency?!

Hope you are all well?

Sorry for another long post - they have been like this the past few times Blush

harverina · 21/10/2010 23:07

nicnac, not sure what the others think but I was told no hats indoors at all as it can cause over heating. Know that people do still out hats on their babies at night though.

harverina · 21/10/2010 23:34

Sorry to post again but we are not having the best night. E was back up again. Fed for 30 seconds and fell asleep but as soon as I put her in her cot she screamed. I plonked a dummy in her mouth and she fell asleep. We have never used a dummy before and now I am sitting feeling terrible Sad

On a more positive note, I have finally managed to put up a couple of pics.

harverina · 21/10/2010 23:47

Couldnt do it...I snuck in and gently took the dummy out of her mouth. Its going in the bin (maybe).

harverina do not beat yourself up about the dummy, and do not bin it - it worked, and AFAIK it is best to remove it once tot is asleep, although SIDS do recommend dummy use to lower risk. B is a thumb/finger/fist/grobag sucker!

Zeeky I am glad someone likes the name Grin

Poor little Boo had a horrid day with poo yesterday - as she is BF, up until solids she has never had to put any effort into it, but now needs to push. Yesterday she was straining and pushing and crying, and it was really upsetting. The poos are not hard, just formed, so this is new I guess. I have increased fruit and veg, although yesterday she refused breakfast and lunch. She got her appetite
back at dinner, and even woke in the night for a feed, plus demanded seconds at breakfast. Several poos since that have gone unnoticed, so seems better.

She also has very dry skin around her neck/chest due to dribble. I change bibs frequently, and have tried various creams, but nothing is helping - any experience/ideas?

stinkypinky · 22/10/2010 10:26

About grobags, the website has guidelines about what tog/additional layers of clothing etc, but does not say abut temps under 16deg. When we were camping, I put Boo to bed in 2 sleepsuits, on her grobag, then did bag up when it got cooler, then cellular blankets, fleeces etc as needed, checking temp of her back. Peeled off as necessary. It got down to 5deg, and she was the warmest of us all. She could not sleep with a hat on, and gloves got sucked, so would result in even colder hands. Hands will be cold - when B woke up they were little red iceblocks, I would warm one hand and DD1 would warm the other, while she had a feed. No fingers were lost Grin She also had the best sleep ever, or perhaps it just seemed that way as I was awake nearly all night checking on her, and trying to keep myself warm!

I would only put a cotton cellular blanker on if temp went below 16deg, as the bags are very efficient, and it is more dangerous to be too hot than too cold. I also have a thermostat controlled heater I can use as I would prefer to heat the room than the baby.

stinkypinky · 22/10/2010 10:27

'blanket' even Grin

Mistymoo · 23/10/2010 13:31

Thanks for all your replies on the cold nights. I'm thinking of having the heating come on for an hour or two in the night just to keep him warm. It's definately turned very cold the last few nights.

harverina · 23/10/2010 20:26

Thanks sleepy, she looks just like her daddy too, not a bit like me!

stinkypinky, I have not binned the dummy but not going to use it - obviously I am not totally anti-dummy otherwise I wouldnt have bought them but I think there is no point in having one when we have managed 6 months without one. Some days we are struggling to get Eilidh to self settle - she will often fall asleep when feeding at nap times and at bedtime. I gently take her off and carry her to her bed. Often she will waken but settle quickly. However, we have had a few nights and days where she cries when I take her off and wants to latch back on though then falls asleep again within seconds! Not sure how to resolve it - my DH is in with her just now singing to try and settle her as she just wanted to sleep on me sucking.

mistymoo do you have a thermometer in your DC's bedroom? The room is best between 16 and 18 degrees although, I feel that any less than 18 degrees feels chilly. In the winter we usually have the heating clicking on for half an hour during the night. When it was really cold outside we keep it on all night but down low. stinkypinky is right about over heating.

Stinky hope Billie's tummy is a bit more settled. It must be a total shock to their systems starting solids. Eilidh is pooing more than ever!

Hope you are all having a nice saturday night [smil]

stinkypinky · 23/10/2010 21:46

Thank you harverina, her tummy is more settled today. Wall to wall poo yesterday, but today just a decent korma morning and evening (husbands description). Introduced her to lentils today, and she is a big fan.

Having a fab night in front of X factor with my quilt. DH went to bed early as he was tired Hmm so have remote to myself.

Only 1 more week then back to work Sad

harverina · 23/10/2010 22:15

Your night sounds good to me stinkypinky...we watched a DVD...Furry Vengeance - absolutely awful and my DH's choice! I would maybe have found it funny when I was 10!

Stinkypinky are you going back to work full time?

My DH is tired today too - I was out last night and had a few bottles glasses of prosecco so I expressed enough for last night, during the night and this morning. I slept till 10am Grin Bliss!

Have spent the night looking at dresses online. Have an engagement party in a couple of weeks - I am so fat though Sad

nicnacinoonoo · 24/10/2010 07:57

stinkypinky ajay gets dry/chapped skin around his mouth and chin in the winter. i took him to the docs about it and they gave me a cream called oilatum which we have used ever since.

its kacies christening today, im nervous! hope she doesnt get too upset at all the attention. she has stranger anxiety at the moment and wont let anyone she doesnt know well hold her for very long.

Bettymum · 24/10/2010 08:23

Good luck for the christening, nicnac. Hope it all goes well.
We are off to Cornwall for a couple of nights in a pub :), going to visit the Eden project. Hope we don't lose the DCs in the jungle!
