Sorry to hear about your cousin essie, fingers crossed all is well for her.

Sponge, J isn't talking much either. He has a few words that he uses to get his point across (NO, shouted loudly with a finger pointed at you is his current favourite), but he sounds far behind lots of people on here. I'm not worried though. By the time they hit 5 it will all have evened out, trust me.

When are you moving Sponge? We haven't heard about a moving date yet but to be honest I am dreading the whole packing thing so I am in no rush.

DebInAustria · 16/04/2010 09:02

Essie - hope your cousin is OK

We have friends staying with us who should be flying home today but their flight's been cancelled - the 1st flight they can get on is Wednesday!!Good job we get on so well and the children haven't fallen out yet!

Rolf · 16/04/2010 14:27

Sybil sorry I haven't posted the slow cooker recipes. I actually have a spare copy of the book they are all from. May I send it to you?

Essie hope your cousin's op goes well.

neenz · 16/04/2010 16:11

We have been having hat battles today - E's new hat arrived so I tried to put it on her but she refused and just took it straight off. So I told her she couldn't play outside unless she has it on. So she just played inside. Every time she went to the back door I said 'you have to have your hat on' but she just shook her head and walked away.

I wonder how long this stand-off will last. She can be a stubborn little thing.

Amberc · 16/04/2010 17:04

Neenz - Luke WILL NOT wear a hat. Of course he will wear it at nursery when all the others have their on though.

Essie - I hope your cousin is OK and they find the lump benign. Luke never smiles on request unfortunately which si a bit rubbish for photo taking!

Biscuits - how gorgeous! I love it when (very seldomly) Luke gives me a kiss without me asking.

Blimey Neenz - recognising written numbers is amazingly advanced isn't it? Wow!!

Essie (again) I like the second pair of I shoes and I also think Pumps are good for skinnies if you have nice legs. If you have the merest ounce of a fat thigh a heel is best! Boden have got lovely pumps.

going · 16/04/2010 17:18

I only lurk from time to time but Eddie I just wanted to post that DS who is one of the oldest here (nearly 23months), has very few words. On a daily basis Mummy and no are the only words he uses frequently, he has said Daddy a handful of times but likes to call him mummy! I'm not worried about him as I know he understand a lot - don't think he has a concept of reading numbers though!

neenz · 16/04/2010 17:31

Not sure really re reading numbers - he loves books and has lots of books with numbers in, so I think it is a bit like recognising a dog or a cat for him. It's not just the sequence he knows cos you can do it in any sequence and he knows the number. He is so cute now when we are on walks - when we see a dog he shouts 'dog!' and points, then goes 'woof woof'.

Esther agreed to have her hat on - 10 mins later it had gone and I couldn't find it anywhere! Cheeky monkey - she 'dropped' it in the wendy house. Now they are both refusing to have their hats on so are watching itng.

Amberc · 16/04/2010 18:31

Just been watching Luke playing football with daddy in the garden - so adorable. It's moments like those that make me so sure we made the right decision moving to the burbs!

EssieAmma · 16/04/2010 19:40

Thanks for the fashion help! I bought a pair of ballets today, but chunky ballets (which sounds odd - they're comfy) because I won't really wear ballets because even if they cost loads they're still what I would call 'cheap' shoes (I have a special dialect word in Welsh - maybe it's trashy I mean more than cheap) and they're floppy and come off. So I got these, and I think they look fine with my skinnies. PLEASE tell me if I'm going to look like an arse!
My feet are size 5 and my legs are skinny, thighs included (stomach, now, that's another matter...) but these shoes means I can chase Iestyn and everything! I also wear pumps - and covet the boden ones! Can't get converse, weird sizing, but my current ones are all-but-converse from Sainsbury's and dirt cheap!

Iestyn will not wear a hat. No way. It's quite annoying. Nursery have just requested sunblock and hats and permission to use both (!), so I'll supply a hat. And see if they manage anything!

My cousin - saw her today. She already knows that the lump was not benign. She's in for a week next week (she's because it's the longest she's ever spent away from her DD - I wouldn't be surprised if it was the first overnight stay). Her husband is in a much worse state about it. She's pragmatic - the doctor told her they'd take the lump and the lymph notes - she said take anything you want, whole breast, both breast, and if it comes to that take all reproductive bits. Anything but cancer.
They all ask her if anyone in the family has it - answer is no - but as she said, now her DD will get cared for like a queen because her answer is yes, mother had breast cancer.

Also went to my handyman's funeral (it was a brain tumour with him ) and it was lovely but sad obviously.

Tomorrow, I'm going to my biannual conference in Aberystwyth - decided against staying overnight, too traumatic (!!! ) but DH and Iestyn are having a boys' day. I'm obv. sick with worry, being a mad control freak, but DH reckons he should be ok.

Amberc · 16/04/2010 19:56

Oh Essie - I hope hope hope your cousin gets the treatment to make her OK. What a story. Cancer is terrible for anyone but when you have a small child it must be so much worse with all the worry. x x x x x

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 16/04/2010 21:19

Essie I'm so sorry to read about your cousin. Sending lots of positive thoughts her way.

I went to my friend's husband's memorial today. It was so sad. My friend has demonstrated the most amazing strength and courage. It really struck me that the church was full of young people. Such a contrast from my granny's the other week full of old codgers and relatives! Lots of people were supposed to come from overseas but victims of the volcanic ash

S is a bugger for not wearing his hat too. He was really good in the winter so I thought he might be better this summer. The trick for me is to get it on him when he's not looking (very difficult obviously) and then I have half a chance of getting him to keep it on.

S has been a bit of a mare this week in our bed etc. However, he is being a bit of a mummy's boy at the moment so lots of hugs and kisses here which is lovely. He pats you on the back sometimes when he gives you a hug which is funny. Still not loads of words here either, though his new thing when hiding under the duvet (a long standing game here) is to say 'hide' then 'sshhh' which is very cute.

Right, must go watch Lost.

Oh Essie nice new shoes!

Rolf · 16/04/2010 22:09

Essie so sorry about your cousin .

Goddess I have been thinking about your friend although I forgot to post. I'm very sorry

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 16/04/2010 22:20

Thanks Rolf that's very kind of you.

Rolf · 17/04/2010 16:29

Steroid Bob is burning another bonfire, and it smells like plastic . DD1 is having a tantrum in the garden so I guess we're quits

PiggyPenguin · 17/04/2010 17:32

Thanks for the offer of the book Rolf thats very kind of you.

Essie, its horrible news and I hope and pray she will be fine. My aunt had a breast and nodes removed a couple of years ago and is now fine. She had re-constructive surgery just last month so hopefully the whole thing is now behind her.

One of my close friends is stuck in Singapore airport with her dh, their 8yr old, her elderly parents and her ds and bil. Apparently there are no hotels and they have no idea when they will be able to get home. Poor things, I am so glad dh did not go away this week.

neenz · 17/04/2010 19:33

Sybil, what a nightmare for your friend. When you have young children it must make it so much harder to cope in situations like that. I heard last time that volcano erupted it lasted two years .

Essie, so so sorry for your cousin. How old is she? Hope they got it early and that this op (and will she have follow-up chemo etc?)will do the trick. I am sure your DH and Iestyn will be fine . Have a nice break!

We have done ok with hats today, they seem to have realised that unless they wear them they don't go outside and they love playing outside so they have kept them on. I wish I hadn't bought her a white hat tho . E has done so well with her eating the last two days - she had shepherds pie today. Usually she only eats sweet potato and won't touch any casserole/bolognese/tomato type dishes. They have been eating lots so maybe they are having a growth spurt. It definitely makes a difference when she is hungry (whereas T will eat any time ).

Must go now to pick up our curry - DH is already in his pyjamas!

Rolf · 17/04/2010 21:00

Sybil great . My e-mail address is [email protected]

We watched Doctor Who! I love sitting down with the family to watch this. I know i've posted this before but it's become such a nice part of family life, just at the right time for the boys. One of DD1's first words was exterminate .

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 17/04/2010 21:20

Grrr. DH just nearly had to do an emergncy stop on the city bypass (speed limit 70 mph) because right at the point a lane closed due to roadworks some lunatic sped past at about 100 mph and cut in right in front of us. V dangerous.

Loving exterminate as a first word! We're just heading home to put S in bed and watch Dr Who.

TheBuggerofSuburbia · 17/04/2010 21:50

Hello everyone, and sorry for the radio silence from me. I've been rationing my online time. Everything is ok with me - DP and I are rubbing along atm. Work is busy, and I've been learning how to use some design software and DTP packages, which I really got into. It was a lot easier than I thought, and that makes me think I might jump on the sewing bandwagon too (not that designing and using a sewing machine are the same, just that something I've been avoiding because I thought it was too hard wasn't IYSWIM)- I've found myself being oddly drawn to that part of John Lewis...

Goddess, thanks for looking out for me, I'm so sorry to hear about your friend's husband, and your granny too. How are you?

Essie, I hope your cousin is ok, and her treatment goes as well as it can.

B has suddenly become a bit of a chatterbox -from very few words, he's stringing together several. Sometimes I can understand, sometimes not. My favourite is when he asks for a 'cuggle' - awww. However, he refuses to say mummy or mama - lots of 'daddy' instead. If he's asked to say mummy he says daddy. Pah!

And he probably has access to too much tv, sometimes he's interested, sometimes not, but he loves books, and is happy to be out playing as well - we put together the trike my mum got him, and that's very popular. DP has done a lot of work on the garden, we'll have some grass down next month, and I can't wait to be able to chuck him out to play. I'm very excited about the fruit and veg beds we're putting in, and I'm even thinking about getting a couple of chickens.

When it was sunny last week, I managed to squeeze one of last year's hats onto B (it was a bit too big for him then), I picked up two for £6 in M&S this week. We got his last pair of shoes in John Lewis sale, half price Clarks ones for £14. Fingers crossed I can do that again, the price of shoes is outrageous.

Hope everyone else is ok, and a wave to Biscuits and C in particular x

DebInAustria · 17/04/2010 22:48

Essie- sorry to hear about your cousin

Sybil - how stressful for your friend stuck at the airport, at least our friends just get to have an extended holiday with us instead.

Rolf - I feel exactly the same about Dr Who!!

abdnhiker · 18/04/2010 10:23

essie I hope your cousin will be okay - lumpy breast cancer is normally very treatable, the friend I lost had inflammatory breast cancer and I think that has much worse survival rates.

DGT I hope your friend is coping okay.

Eddie the teachers at DS1's nursery class seem to prefer velcro - they have to put the kids shoes on to go outside and at the end of the day and I think it'd be a nightmare to tie 20 pairs of shoes whereas the kids do it themselves with velcro.

sybil hope your friends are okay and get home soon.

DH is off on a bike ride and I've two very grumpy kids today. We've slept outside in the garden in the tent and I think they're both very short on sleep.... Fraser's going to be put to bed at 11 for a nap - I'd better pay him attention until then...

Rolf · 18/04/2010 13:36

Hope your boys have cheered up Abdn. I broke up a fight between DS1 and DD1 this morning. "He pushed me and I tripped and hurt my verucca". "She kicked my scabs" . How gorgeous do my children sound?! T is having a huge nap and DS2 and DD1 are playing together really nicely, so I have no excuse for messing around aimlessly as the house is a tip.

neenz · 18/04/2010 17:22

Rolf that's hilarious. I get so fed up when I have to referee fights between T and E. They usually play quite happily - as long as there is two of whatever they are playing with. If not, T just wants whatever E has and he really muscles his way in - he edges his way in between her and the toy. And then when I try to lure him away with another toy he refuses, so E gives up and plays with the new toy but then T wants that once she starts playing with it.

But yesterday we were in the kitchen and he went into the playroom and got a pram, brought it into the kitchen, shouted 'Edder, pwam!' and gave to her and went to get the other one for himself .

I was thinking today being a twin must be like being married (when you didn't even choose to be!) - they spend every minute of every day together, it's a wonder they like each other at all.

I have been back to bed this afternoon, I have been feeling quite tired the last couple of days and getting quite uncomfortable with bits of baby sticking in me. I am only 23wks tho and I swear I look more like 7mths. I keep telling myself it is OK cos the baby is apparently fully grown now it just needs to put on weight so hopefully things won't get too much worse [sticking head in sand]

SpiderWilliam · 18/04/2010 18:07

Essie thinking of you and your cousin.

Neenz you are doing well only have an occasional afternoon sleep. I am currently sleeping each afternoon for anything up to 2 1/2 hours! Amazingly (and I realise I am jinxing things here)P has finally started sleeping more. He is sleeping for a long time in the afternoon, and then he is having tea later at 6 and I am eating with him (otherwise I don't last the evening). He is then going to bed later after 8 generally, but is now waking between 6 and 7. I am now 10 weeks and really hoping that I start feeling better soon. Neenz, when did you stop feeling grim? Please give me hope! The other day I thought things were getting better, then this afternoon I woke up and felt completely washed out , and I even looked grey, until I had some toast. I had my booking appointment with the midwife this week. It was great actually. She just talked to me as though everything would sail smoothly along and voila a perfect baby would appear sometime in November. For the first time I started looking forward to a new baby rather than just fretting over whether everything is ok. Still waiting for the 12 week scan though obviously.

Just booked tickets to go and see Priscilla the musical in the West End in June with 5 girlfriends. We used to all go out carousing together, but now the best we can manage is a matinee and an early supper

Sorry, bit of a me, me, me post. Hope you are all enjoying the lovely weather.

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 18/04/2010 19:57

Lovely weather? Snow flake shaped symbols on tomorrow's weather forecast here . How are the other Scotland based folk faring on the weather front?

Glad your appt went well Spider.

Bugger good to have you back. Was thinking the other day that we could do with another meet up, maybe once my exams are out of the way. Perhaps Biscuits and I could come visit and have nosy round your place arrange to meet up with you somewhere toddler friendly and accessible in the Weege. I know you guys came to Edinburgh last time but I did also think the Zoo could be a top meeting place (and it fits your criteria of not involving a drive into the city centre or onto the bypass). I can do Mondays generally but not sure how you both fixed work wise. A weekend day instead if that was easier?
