SpiderWilliam · 07/04/2010 21:23

Poppy - sorry you are feeling miserable it must be so hard. Hope the flu improves quickly, I completely understand wanting to be ill for a reason. Hope you eventually get some good advice about the op.

Amber - sounds promising on the follicles. No advice on duvets though. Impressed with the weight loss too. In my heart of hearts I am a Tory too, but I can't vote for them at the moment as I don't find them credible.

Neenz - one of the really impressive things about you I always think is your absolute conviction in what you believe. My degree was in politics and as a result I don't believe that any one party is truely right or wrong. In fact I think the two main parties have travelled so far from their original principles that regardless of who wins you won't be able to tell the difference in the state of the country in 5 years time.

Rolf · 07/04/2010 23:18

Poppy sorry you're miserable, and I hope your flu is better soon. I've posted on your other thread.

It's interesting to read about the election on here. I don't know who I'll vote for. Our outgoing (labour) MP was very good. I think she had a great deal of integrity. She started a campaign against lads mags being displayed at child-height in newsagents which I found very impressive. If she was standing again I'd have a real dilemma about wanting to vote for her, without voting for her party (and what they've done with pensions ). But she's not standing and the boundary has been re-drawn so it's all pretty new now.

Amber Great about the follicles. I'm v impressed at your weight loss. I bet you feel brilliant! I weighed myself the other day and measured my waist as well. My weight was what I'd expected (bit overweight) but my waist measurement was awful. I have a family history of heart disease so I really need to do something about it. I guess the first step is to lose weight generally.

Can anyone help with my engorged boobs? I haven't bfed in 10 days and they seemed to be ok, but over the last couple of days have become very lumpy and very very tender. I had a long hot shower last night, but don't know what else to do. I don't have a breast pump and have never managed to express. I don't think I could bear much prodding, tbh. I'm beginning to feel a bit sick, too

Neenz that's so sad about your niece. I've read about teenage girls let boys use their phones to film them giving blow jobs at parties, then uploading it onto YouTube . I don't know if it's true. It's so sad that they have so little self-respect and don't feel able to chose not to follow what their friends are doing. And once it's on the internet then potentially it's there for ever. When I was a teenager (old gimmer!) people went in for drunken snogging but it seems that they go much further...

SpiderWilliam · 08/04/2010 07:10

I'm no expert Rolf, but I did once find a hot bath helpful with engorged boobs. I got myself totally submerged and once my boobs had warmed up (so to speak) they released alot of milk with minimal massaging. Looked like a small volcanoe erupting underwater (TMI) . However if you are beginning to feel ill then you should go to the Drs especially as you are getting over your op. Best to get on the anti-biotics sooner rather than later.

PiggyPenguin · 08/04/2010 07:50

Rolf any hint of mastitus and you need to get to the dr's straight away for the antibiotics, I know I have left it before thinking it was managable and it was always hideous.

I am crap at hand expressing, but a long hot bath is good as it does release milk (and it sounds like you are getting overfull)you could try gently massaging them under the water to get an even better flow. Otherwise, don't they reccommend strapping yourself up tightly to get rid of the milk as soon as possible? I'm sure one of my friends did this.

I'm a swing voter, but my local area is very heavily tory and I would be amazed if anyone else had the remotest chance of getting in. I do think though that everyone has the right to vote to their choice regardless of their reasons. Whatever your decisions for voting, no one has the right to impose criteria on others. So I wouldn't worry Amber, I think you are safe here regardless.

poppy34 · 08/04/2010 10:41

Strap up, hot bath if required but not to release any more milk than necessary(lol at spiders volcAno) and paracetamol if uncomfy. Thanks for post Rolf and everyone else wishing me better.

Feel bit better today but still at home as have no energy- it's bizarre as no other symptoms except bit feverish.

Still giving me lots of time to read and mn so being indulgent here.

OP posts:
neenz · 08/04/2010 11:08

No I don't mind if you vote tory (Sponge might have something to say about it tho ).

I agree it is such a shame the parties' policies have almost merged but I think labour has done so much good with tax credits and the nhs compared to what it was like here in the 80s with high unemployment and people left on the scrapheap. Although I do think the Tories are a different party now than they were then, just like Labour of 97 were different to the 70s (they had to be to get elected). I'm not sure it will be exactly the same whichever party gets in because the Tories are always going to support business at the expense of workers (IMO). labour brought back in lots of good trade union legislation which Thatcher had smashed which was also a good thing (although didn't go far enough imo), that's something the Tories wouldn't do, so I think there are some big differences between the parties still.

Spider, that was a very nice thing to say , it is always nice to know you don't just think I am a twonk . I have strong views but realise there is always a POV I haven't heard/considered and always try/hope not offend anyone (not easy on MN!).

Essie, hilarious about Plaid! I heard one of them on the radio this morning and was nodding my head along to everything he was saying (something about jobs but I forget exactly what )

Rolf, hope the boobs feel better. It's scary isn't it about the mobile phones, something we never had to worry about. It's not that I think she is in a bad school or that if she was in private school she wouldn't be getting into 'situations', it's more the area she lives in, people don't work, they have no aspirations, no one goes to university. It will be a miracle if my niece gets any GCSEs. At least at private school they are getting qualifications. My sister (niece's mum) went through a big rebellion stage at 16 and thought my lower-middle class parents were snobs (eg 'all my mates get to sit in front of the telly to eat their tea, why can't I?). So at 16 she moved out onto a council estate, got no qualifications and has lived in the area ever since. She seems to like it though to be fair!

I didn't tell you about my croup drama - you may have seen it on FB. Theo had these awful struggling to breathe episodes (almost like asthma attacks) so the nurse gave me an emergency appt at the gp for 6.30pm Tues - when I turned up there were no GPs there, they had all gone home! So we had to take him to gp on call - he has croup. Just calpol/ibuprofen and he is fine, it should clear up ina few days but it does sound scary esp in the night!

That reminds me I must ring the surgery to complain!

poppy34 · 08/04/2010 13:14

That horrid about the Croup- hope theo on the mend now. Good luck with gp complaint- frankly I am very cynical about success of complaints after various run Ins with mine over years.

Posted on another thread re has mn
poster ever made you cry and mentioned one who I found particularly offensive (obviously not by name) - sponge will know who I mean. And what are the chances that the next person on that thread should be the poster in question- what are the chances of that!!!

OP posts:
Rolf · 08/04/2010 15:12

Poor Theo. That does sound scary.

Thanks for the posts about my boobs. I put some cabbage leaves in my bra last night, had a warm bath this morning and am wearing a tight-ish top, and they are feeling a bit better. I'm not feeling sick any more (maybe it was the leftover Easter eggs ) so think things are improving.

Neenz if we are going to vote for opposing parties, we'd cancel out each other's vote, so could go to the pub instead

Essie nice to see you! Why am I not surprised that you're voting for Plaid Cymru .

We went to a friend's new house this morning. She's the lady who was my doula when I was expecting T, and she's moved round the corner. Such is my magnetism .

Amberc · 08/04/2010 16:22

My slow cooker has turned up. I am in such a state of excitement it is quite ridiculous . D Day tomorrow - taking my ovulation trigger shot tonight and then it's shagging for three days in a row - poor Mark! They told me I had a 2% chance of having triplets!

neenz · 08/04/2010 17:06

Rolf, glad the boobs are better - going the pub would be great if I could drink! Election day is the DTs birthday too.

Abdn, interesting what you say about the deficit - this is something that worries me too and I would love to investigate it more (all the parties say they have the answer ). I heard a Labour man on radio yesterday saying it's all ok - 'we've only just paid off what we borrowed to get through WW2' , not sure how true that is! It worries me (I am debt averse) esp as the deficit is just this year's borrowing, and is added to every year! but I do think it is dangerous to cut too heavily as that might take us back into recession. Cutting it slowly and maintaining decent services is preferable to slashing stuff to get it paid off faster only for it to cause more pain (IMO ).

Amber, is this trigger shot an injection? I am intrigued!

poppy34 · 08/04/2010 18:27

am with you there re debt- and neenz that stat is shite. The net debt after ww2 was 21bn(and we paid last of war loan off in 2006....) so that is really the square root of fuck all- link

What gets me is the level of ignorance and patronising shite politiicians of all types spout (you can imagine the sad debates you get with the radio in our house when they start talking about tax)...

OP posts:
poppy34 · 08/04/2010 18:29

Sorry in my ranting(am feeling loads better) meant to say good luck and an energetic weekend for Amber (unsurprisingly think my period just starting). What are you cooking first - I love my slow cooker and should use it more.

OP posts:
PiggyPenguin · 08/04/2010 18:37

We won't expect any messages from you for the next few days then Amber

Glad you are feeling better Rolf and hope you do too Poppy.

Rolf · 08/04/2010 20:51

Happy shagging Amber .

I'm (tragically) more interested in the slow cooker than the shagging. What are you cooking? I have spells of using mine. I used it a lot in the winter and less so at the moment.

abdnhiker · 08/04/2010 21:10

I could post more about politics but I'd rather send Amber a and tell her to enjoy the next few days regardless.

hope rolf, poppy, theo and everyone else who might be sick is on the mend. My DH has a man-cold but he's smartening up as he's noticed the lack of sympathy. He's heading offshore tomorrow for the weekend and I'm stuck at home with a long list of chores, including painting the bathroom. I did one coat this afternoon with DS1 while Fraser napped - I can't believe that wasn't more disastrous but he didn't do anything too questionable (aside from try to paint the walls 'spotty').

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 08/04/2010 21:21

I too could post pages on politics Abdn but I'm going to stay on here - I might not be campaigning this time but most of my friends are immersed in the election so it's nice to come on here for a break!

Have a great few days Amber . A benefit of the slow cooker is you can be busy elsewhere while your tea is cooking and L having a nap

Came across an old resurrected thread about holidaying in gites in France with some mixed views. I saw you posted on it Poppy - am a bit [gulp] about my holiday now, it never occurred to me that it could be anything less than perfect!!!

Glad you're feeling a bit better today Poppy. You too Rolf.

S managed to take the plaster which covers his steristrips today. He's still looking a bit bruised poor boy. Is it easy to take them off when the time comes btw? Am assuming with the range of older DCs on here someone will have done it before. Either that or Dr Biscuits will appear and let me know. On the subject of my central belt comrades is Bugger lurking. You've not been around much - is all ok.

I really should be studying just now. I'm wildly swinging between blind panic and sticking my head in the sand.

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 08/04/2010 21:23

Oh, am sooooo impressed that you got a coat of paint on the bathroom today Abdn. I've got loads of painting that needs doing - you're both welcome to have a go at spotty painting

Rolf · 08/04/2010 21:39

Love the spotty painting!

Goddess don't know about steristrips, sorry. I'm crossing all my fingers and toes as I type that as I'm sure it means that very soon I will find out the hard way!

neenz · 08/04/2010 21:49

Yeah Poppy I thought that war debt thing was a bit ! They will say anything and what can you believe.

Abdn, VERY impressed with the painting. Sometimes I am quite embarrassed by how much I can't/refuse to do during the kids' waking hours - if it's not changing nappies, making food or clearing up after food, then I'm sat on the sofa .

PiggyPenguin · 08/04/2010 21:51

Rolf I'm sadly very interested in the slow cooker too. We had pork in cider in ours today, but it is the only recipe that we use regularly and I need a few more.

Any offers?? (sybil bats eyelashes in desperation...)

Rolf · 08/04/2010 22:23

I cook sausages in cider, coq au vin, beef in beer, chicken in preserved lemons. Let me know if you want any more details. I use a lot of recipes from this book

EddieIzzardismyhero · 08/04/2010 22:24

Hi guys, just popping in quickly to say hello and introduce my new name . Tis me, sponge, but I needed a new name and new identity - I'm tired of being overweight and feeling shit about myself and having watched the latest Eddie Izzard programme I have been inspired - not to run dozens of marathons, but to run!

Sorry I haven't been around - life a bit manic at the moment and sleep very hard to come by. We're moving house, I'm trying to go to the gym as often as I can, and sleeping when I get the opportunity.

Have skim read posts but can't remember much . Good luck to Amber for her bms and poppy for her op.

Been enjoying everyone's updates/photos on FB. Will try to pop by when I have time, but until we move it probably won't be often .

EssieAmma · 08/04/2010 22:43

Eddie Izzard!!
This thread made me laugh today - I now have bizarre mental images of Spider in a spa bath with underwater volcanoes and Amber, well, shagging for Britain whilst cooking food which takes hours. And Rolf in a tight pulling top, finest wet t-shirt comp style!

Seriously - Amber I'm not missing some sort of euphemism or anything - that is an actual slow cooker you're talking about? Quite confused. If it is an actual slow cooker all the excitement might come in useful. (That wink looks really pervy now...)

I've bought some skinny jeans today but I'm such an old lady I'm struggling with making them look ok.

Argh, got to go to bed. Sorry, will do a proper post and respond to everyone tomorrow.

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 09/04/2010 06:54

Ooh, Rolf we have that book too. I cook the easy pork cassoulet. We had the sausages in cider this week but DH did it in apple juice. Must check out those other recipies you mentioned.

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 09/04/2010 21:06

Oh my, I've killed the thread again.

Hello Sponge/EddieIzzard. I've met Eddie Izzard as it happens (hopes celebrity tales lure everyone back as I'm home alone this evening).
