Hello all! I'm back! You may not have noticed my absence and I actually saw some of you in RL so no major withdrawals. But there have been some Serious Words with DH who decided (tax bill time) to save some money. He did this by giving up on his broadband in London. Fine, because he has mobile broadband with a dongle (oo er) and also an iPhone. But the catch here is that his mobile broadband doesn't work (a) in many places in the house and (b) on my computer. So his money saving (and can I add that that was it, just that, pence basically!) consisted of stopping me getting online in London.

Abdn hope you have a great day today - all exciting! (I love work, as you know...!)
All tired folks, hope you get some rest.
Goddess I'm going to bake some stuff today. Probably the cheese biscuits I tracked down, detective style. Or rather, addict style. I can explain...
The WI do a cake stall once a month at our village shop and I go to support (out of the goodness of my heart, obviously - it's a burden ) and in January they had some small cheese biscuits. I bought a box - and they were delicious. So good, I swear she put crack cocaine in them becuase I kept waking up fantasizing about them. The next month, I bought 2 boxes, ate one and froze one, then defrosted and ate them (rather cold) before the week was up. Then I had none, and even considered finding out where the lady lives.
Back in London, I decided to make a cake and turned to my Delia's Book of Cakes. Whilst flicking through, I saw a recipe for cheese biscuits. Now, this is the WI - ladies of a certain age; they're unlikely to be getting recipes online, and not likely to be following Nigella or Jamie Oliver or anything. But Delia is right up their street, surely? So I gave them a go - they're easy peasy - and lo, I now make my own cheese biscuits.
I still fantasize about them though.

I'm considering making a marmalade cake too.

Iestyn got a shocking amount of chocolate. And I do help him with it. (In fact, I'm going to have to watch it because I'm going to get quite fat if I'm not careful!)

Off to the new Waitrose now. It's freezing here and I might as well benefit from their heating!

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 06/04/2010 13:32

Welcome back Essie and Abdn!

Essie, I like the cheese stars biscuits, which are easy peasy and can be found on MN recipe page. It took me a few goes how to figure how to make them without having egg to bind them but I then realised I could whizz the ingredients in a blender and they finally blended.

Hope your first day at work goes well Abdn!

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 06/04/2010 13:34

cheese stars

Has everyone disappeared to a secret thread location so you cant distract me from revision?!?!

S had his first 'war wound' today. Bust his head on the corner of our wooden bed frame and nurse at the GPs sent him onto the sick kids hospital in case he needed proper stitches. Thankfully he only needed those steri-strip (sp?) things though. They said he might have a scar but it's right by his eyebrow so shouldn't be too noticeable. Am just very glad it wasn't his eye. Has it stopped him haring around? No, of course not! In fact his favourite game at the mo is walking backwards (and into things) or spinning round till he falls over or just generally falling over backwards for fun.

Rolf · 06/04/2010 22:47

Poor S, and poor you, too. Hope the revision is going well.

This thread is very quiet, isn't it? I'm assuming everyone is busy being exciting and dynamic, rather than stuck to their chair by the weight of all the Easter eggs they have eaten .

I had a new experience today - a friend has become a grandmother . I can't really believe it and it makes me feel a disconcerting mixture of ancient and broody.

DH and I are quite excited about the election. Is anyone else? We are engaging in "heated debates" and have promised each other that we will vote, even though we still aren't sure how we want to vote.

SpiderWilliam · 07/04/2010 09:49

Hello. Just checking in. Back from my week at the in laws which was nice, but I am now appreciating being a free agent in my own home.

I am trying not to post too much as all I want to do is moan about feeling crappy and pregnant which is dull of me. I have realised that I am really rubbish at being pregnant. It's not as though I have bad symptoms I just don't like feeling less than A1.

I am enjoying the election build up although I am wholly depressed by the choice between Labour or the Tories who I think are both has tired and hackneyed as each other. Will vote Lib Dem I think and hope for a hung government to shake things up. Our seat is a tight run between the Tories and the LDs so a LD vote does actually count here.

Oops. Posted twice and now I have killed the thread.

EssieAmma · 07/04/2010 14:02

I'm here! Not much to say - it's a nice day here.

DebInAustria · 07/04/2010 14:04

Hi everyone, nothing dynamic happening here, just racing round like a mad thing with houseful of guests and lovely friends arriving tomorrow for a week. Boys have had to do some serious decluttering of lego to clear enough floor space for 2 extra mattresses in their bedroom!Weather is very hot his afternoon, I want to be outside sipping wine but I have a pigsty to tidy up and an English pupil to teach. got to go , byeeee x

PiggyPenguin · 07/04/2010 14:53

Nothing much happening here. Kids have various parties to go to and we have an exciting afternoon of sorting out the loft planned. What fun!

Amberc · 07/04/2010 15:05

Hi All, I really have nothing interesting to talk about at the mo hence my lack of posts. My two bits of 'news' are that I have now lost 12 lbs and that I have a clomid cycle this month with scans to monitor and I have 3 follicles developing even though I only had 2 on the mega strong IVF drugs - bit odd but all good. Should ovulate at some point in the next couple of days so fingers crossed (again!).

Amberc · 07/04/2010 15:07

Oh - one thing to ask...Luke is too hot with his duvet at night. I can't find a 1 tog duvet and he is too long for growbags so what tog is a blanket/quilt?

poppy34 · 07/04/2010 15:33

Not sure Amber but would imagine about a 4 or 5 tog as edie has cot duvet that is similar in thickness to quilt aNd that's 4 tog. Also good news re clomid cycle - will keep fingers and toes crossed for you.

Nothing much to add- had nice Easter but lain ip in bed with bad bug (feels a bit like flu as no energy and very feverish).

Know I haven't been on in a while but someone was asking re Cheap french shopping (sybil?)- do you still want tips?

Hi to everyone else- hope you are feeling bit less rubbish today spider( am having rare moment as been stuck at home with heavily pregnant nanny who has asked me when I will have another - like Its a tesco delivery!!! ). Sorry for all I have missed as been lurking but need to seek out flu drugs now before dd gets back

neenz · 07/04/2010 17:41

Poppy that sucks . When is nanny leaving?

I am quite excited about the election but 5 more years of Labour is the best of two bad options. I wish Labour were more socialist but then they would be unelectable .

I really like the Lib Dems policies but in our area (me and Rolf are in same constituency ) I think it is a straight fight between tory and labour. So labour it is. Me and dh have good discussions about it too - he is more a natural Tory because he is a high earner (even though I think it is un-Christian to be a Tory - that went down well with him as you can imagine ) but I think the better off should pay more even though that means us. The one policy I would love to hear is trying to tackle youth crime/antisocial behaviour by actually investing in facilities for young people (like they did with SureStart centres) - give the kids something to do other than walk the streets getting drunk. 13yrs of ASBOs and putting more young people in prison has not worked . I think New Labour really missed an opportunity there.

I was quite saddened to read my 13yo niece's FB status today where she talks about a photo of her getting drunk and throwing up , like it wasn't a rare occasion . Lots of comments along the lines of 'everyone gets wasted' and even talk of 'fingering' . She is 13! She lives in a pretty deprived area and it makes me sad the kids she is mixing with (I know that sounds snobby cos she is one of them too but it just feels like she doesn't belong there). She is always in trouble at school as well and has been excluded once already - for sending a teacher a threatening note! Gosh I a make her sound lovely don't I

neenz · 07/04/2010 17:43

Amber forgot to say great news about the follicles - maybe it's the new diet and weight loss?

poppy34 · 07/04/2010 17:57

Another couple of weeks neenz- I am generally fine about it but feeling very sorry for myself today(my rational being I would rather feel like this for good reason than just a cold). Also pissed off as posted on general health asking for practical tips for
next week when getting my lump removed (it's
stuff like what to wear, how long you feel rubbish after general as mate reckoned she was laid low for a week)- just want to know so can be prepared. Not one reply yet people will crap on for pages about sodding wedding etiquette etc!!!

That is depressing re your niece and fb- am amazed at what dsc post on theirs as seems there is no secrecy or shame anymore. Am fairly sure I was at uni when first sick on drink(am not pretending to be an angel).

Am quite interested in election but not sure really as think all parties have something to offer.we haveovals here too and amused dh no end by having a lively discussion with the lib dem lady the other day( she was evading my questions regarding the questionable planning policies round here and basically lieing about anything I had heard being Tory propoganda- had
no answer re monstrosity behind us that was put up partly without consent on a preservation zone...).

Right back to bee bright(absolutely fab DVD that edie loves with justin on and gives me a nice break from
the wiggles).

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 07/04/2010 19:29

Very quick post as I must crack on with chores but while I remember - Amber you can get grobags for 18months to 3 years which are massive.

neenz sorry about your niece. If it's any consolation there's been a thread on here started by an OP horrified about the sexual activity going on in a school state school. Cue LOTS of posts about about things that go on in private school.

poppy very glad to have you back - that's rubbish about your thread.

Will no doubt be back later to procrastinate while revising.

Oh am very excited about election but very sad cos it's the first one in my adult life that I haven't been actively involved in campaigning for (because of exams). However, households in lots of Scottish constituencies will be getting leaflets with me and S's image on!

Neenz - I love the un-Christian Tory comment

Amberc · 07/04/2010 19:48

I have a feeling I'm the only Tory on this thread (maybe even Mumsnet!)

poppy34 · 07/04/2010 19:54

Hi domestic- would echo
what Goes on in private school
would make a crow blush so don't buy the state
school
is worse for that line.

Amber I know what you mean- fwiw part of reason haven't postEd as much is I am a bit about all te
the publicity re mumsnet Election- seems to be that whilst it's fine to discuss politics it does seem to have got some people on here (incl IMHO some of mumsnet founders) thinking that their voice is a bit more valid than anyone elSes. Reminds me a bit of pretend elections at school... Anyway that is just my opinion.

OP posts:
EssieAmma · 07/04/2010 20:12

Yeah, we're shunning you Amber! And Neenz thinks you're the antichrist.
Which party has your picture on, DG?
I'm none of the English parties, as I'm Plaid Cymru through and through and therefore can't really join in the discussion. But definitely socialist, Neenz - when I lived in Oxford people from the socialist party (the actual socialist party, not labour or some other attempt! ) stopped me, asked me if I would consider voting socialist and who do I support. When I said Plaid, they said 'oh, so you're really socialist then'. Plaid is watered down by now, but still quite leftie I think.

Poppy great to see (YKWIM) you again! I'm sorry things are a bit miserable at home. It must be so hard with your nanny, plus the cold too. I have some idea of what it's like - not TTC, but wanting something, something basically achievable, doing everything right, but you can't make it happen for you; it happens for other people with ease, including people who don't deserve it. (I work in academia, remember?!) I always feel like I'm in a big river with the water rushing past me but I can't join in. Ooh, that was miserable. I was trying to be supportive. Sorry!
Also sorry about the thread too - I looked and finally some people had posted. I don't have anything to add - although on the keeping it dry business, my tip (!) is to have a bath instead, but not a lovely soakey one but sitting up in the bath, and then use a flannel or those deo wipes on your top half and underarms. Mind you, that was pre baby - I can't imagine having the time to do that now!

Neenz that sounds awful about your niece. I'm really out of touch about 13yo now, and I'm quite worried about what is to come. Like Poppy I was first sick from drinking at uni. I was quite well-behaved though and I know others from my school were drinking a bit then.

EssieAmma · 07/04/2010 20:18

X-posted Poppy.
But have just remembered need to put bin out (They changed bin day in January and I keep forgetting) so got to go before it's dark. Yes, it's 8.20 - we're 45 minutes time difference to London here (and quite far west). But I guess Abdn will still be in daylight until midnight!

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 07/04/2010 21:12

Am back, having completely failed to start revising this evening!

Poppy I think I know what you mean re: the 'mumsnet election'. I think on one hand it's good that politicians of all parties recognise the importance of the female vote but I am a bit over the whole media storm and weekly Sunday Times/Daily Mail blah blah opinions about MN. I might generally be very active politically but that's not what I come on MN for so I'll not be getting into the election threads. A bit of light hearted banter on here is enough for me.

Essie I'm Labour - don't even get me started on the Nats grin. I don't know much about Plaid tbh. I wouldn't call your counterparts up here leftie though!

Poppy sorry to hear about your nanny asking you about having another - this is one of my major bugbears. People have no idea sometimes.

It was me asking about France btw - there were a few threads on here about how expensive food shopping was in France so wondered if you had any tips on how to avoid breaking the bank while food shopping! Also, any suggestions on nappy brands? The place we're going to will stock up on a few essentials for us and there's no way we'll be doing real nappies while on our hols.

abdnhiker · 07/04/2010 21:18

it's dark here now...

quick post - I'm probably voting Tory even though I have no issues with paying tax as a higher earning family. I have huge concerns about running a deficit though and just don't think there's money to spend. I wish there was a fiscally responsible party - I've no problems supporting those who really need it but I just don't think Labour is responsible enough to manage our finances... And I lived in Canada when they bit the bullet and got rid of their deficit - they rarely run one now, it's a big deal when they do.

Plus Gordon Brown called me a lady of leisure. I've never been so incensed with a politician. But I wont get in to that here...

amber fingers crossed, three follicles is good, I'm sure you must feel very confused though about everything.

Quilts and blankets come in so many different weights ... DS1 sleeps hot and he had just a homemade one with two layers of cotton and one layer of wadding (batting, inside bits). It's very thin and I'd freeze...

poppy it's great to hear from you - I've been thinking of you!

abdnhiker · 07/04/2010 21:23

p.s. I think a un-Christian (or amoral vote) would be voting for personal gain rather than the welfare of others rather than voting for a specific party... There's no good moral choice IMO.
