fidelma pick up put down is a Baby whisperer technique to teach self settling. Didn't realise it would make William cry like it did!! Took a lot not to rescue him but he did sleep eventually and went four hours with no feed which is a record. My boob was ready to explode.

Scout, thanks also lovely story!

I'm in bed now so will have to read up on the posts tomo. Night night!

Scout19075 · 27/03/2010 08:25

Is anyone else dreading the time change with their babies or is it just me?

Igglybuff · 27/03/2010 08:42

Scout, funnily enough no! But only because William wakes at 6am so we put him to bed 6/6.30pm otherwise he flakes out. Clock change will make things more reasonable especially for DH who does bedtime when he comes home from work.

Scout19075 · 27/03/2010 09:02

I think I'm more worried about the light later. We use darkness as part of the signal/routine that it's bedtime.

princessmel · 27/03/2010 11:30

Marking my spot, will post later...

((am I the only one who doesn't put their baby down awake at night time??? I just feed him till he is conked out. I do pat shushh from awake in day though, usually just one nap a day due to other naps being in buggy on school run.))

fidelma · 27/03/2010 14:09

Connor does 6 -6 (with lots of feeds inbetween) I will try and keep him in this routine as it lets me have a couple of hours with the others.I think he will switch quite easily.

He is full of the cold and has conjunctivites when will the bugs end.It does slow his development down as he hasn't as much energy to move around. However he is very interested in objects and what they are called.

I found a great charity baby shop and i got a baby walker which he sits in for a bit and a door bouncer. He prefers to be upright and my back needs a break.

DH and the others are out planting out the poly tunnel and moving snowdrops.

rubyslippers · 27/03/2010 15:48

pu/pd made my DS deranged when i tried it with him

but at least William settled in the end

Rubes goes down awake always (i have to wake her after her night feeds though as she drops off)

She goes down at around 6.45 pm - no idea what the clock change will bring - certainly can't be any worse for my wakeful girlie

Scout - that is such a nice story. At the moment i don't feed Rubes out very often - today we were out and she sucked on a bit of scone and cucumber

DH is home after a week away - DS is hanging off him like a limpet

tonight - steak and ale pie and an early night!

hope everyone is ok x

princessmel · 27/03/2010 16:31

Hello
Well done for letting dh get on with it iggly, it goes against all your instincts to leave them crying (when you know milk will calm them) doesn't it?

F goes down at around 8pm, this is great for us as it means he does the upstairs bedtime routine with the dc's, including story, then has milk on the sofa with us till he zonks out.

Fidelma that baby shop sounds good. We have been leant a door bouncer but not used it much yet.
The next thing I want to get is an Ergo carrier. F is almost too big for the baby bjorn and he is too big to lie down in the Lifft sling. I can't manage the budda position in that and he's too young for the hip position.

No periods here, I got them when dd was 10m and still breasfed.

Freddie's wheezing is about the same....

Oh I think he may have chicken pox, 2 big red spots on his chest. A friends dd , who we saw recently, has got it.
This is on top of the nits ds had last week...great! I did his hair with the lotion, and mine as I was itching too,(I never found any in my hair )...but after using the lotion I had to shampoo it about 6 times (2 before bed, 4 times the next morning) to stop it looking like I'd been swimming in olive oil. YUK!!

We've been out and about today, to Homebase, Ikea etc. We got amongst other things a paddling pool. A hard sided, plastic, apple shaped one (that can be a sand pit too) . We had a blow up one last year and it popped after one use.

Inlaws coming tonight for pants tv and a takeaway...naughty as we had a curry last night.
Tomorrow ds1 and dd have a party each so that's the day gone really.

take care all .

HappyTangerine · 27/03/2010 16:32

PrincessMel - No, you're not the only one-I feed Joseph to sleep. I have had a few occasions this week when I've not been able to feed or rock Joseph to sleep [damn migraine- day 6 and counting] so I have bored him to sleep instead. This involves lying in a completely dark room and closing my eyes. He kicks about a bit, checks repeatedly to see if I'm really asleep or not and then finally drops off.Its quite sweet but doesn't always work.

Scout - Lovely story. I always thought I would be self conscious about breastfeeding out in public but I will whip out boob at the earliest opportunity when needed. Although by that point, Joseph has usually half dragged it out anyway or is buried in my t-shirt making loud, obvious sucking noises

Re breastfeeding later on: I was not breastfed but my sister was breastfed until age 4. (She is much younger than me and a surprise). My mum had hell trying to wean her. She got the bright idea of smearing Marmite over the nipple, so my sister would get the message. My sister had other ideas-she hopped off my mums lap, grabbed a cloth, wiped off the Marmite and said "that's better". Then proceeded to feed as normal. I was 16 and somewhat freaked out by this!Seriously though, I'm in no hurry to give up, although I think 4 will be too much for me. And my sister LOVES Marmite now as my mum kept trying.

Fidelma Big Welsh cwtch to Connor, poor thing. Joseph prefers to be upright as well but I'm still worried about his head control .

Iggly Good luck with the PUPD, Joseph was totally overstimulated and like a little wind up toy when I tried it. MY mum says this is payback/genes-apparently I was a nightmare sleeper and she many a time wound up at the doctors with me begging then to give ME sleeping tablets.

ruby same her with PUPD. Have lovely weekend with your DH and dcs.

Joseph managed to do some half crawl/seal belly flips that propelled him forward this morning, he's v excited. I can't get him to sit up straight at all, he flips over onto all fours and keeps trying to crawl.

Does anyone have either an a)Ergo b)Rose and Rebellion or c)Connecta ssbc? I'm in a shopping mood and I can't decide between them

Have good rest of weekend all x

HappyTangerine · 27/03/2010 16:36

X-post PrincessMel Hope its not chicken pox but if it is, that it stops at 2 spots and is mild. My niece has had it 3 times now, last time with just 2 spots. Really hope the wheezing improves soon.

Gotta go, grumpy DH keeps itching and tearing off his dressing and I need to get to town x

Igglybuff · 27/03/2010 18:23

Yes princess it does go against my instincts I told DH very sternly that I would stop him if I thought it wasn't working! We've seen improvements in how long it takes over two nights but tonight is the crunch for me. If it takes as long then I'm stopping it for a while.

I used to be able to feed to sleep but it rarely works now. It takes a combination of rocking, feeding, singing, etc etc. So PUPD is a last resort really! Also William wakes up about every 2 hours wanting to feed back to sleep which is a killer so we need to give him help settling. I tried the whole pulling the boob out thing but kept getting the timing wrong!

HT love the marmite story And well done Joseph! William isnt really bothered about sitting up either - as soon as I put him in a seated position, he's flopped over, rolling around etc. He has a particularly graceful move of lying on his back, holding his feet on his hands and parping. Gets the wind up at least!

Also bumbo we use a highchair now and also a baby bjorn balance which William can sit upright in by leaning forward. It's designed so that it wont tip forward and can be used for ages up to 2 years. A bit pricey but we use it all the time and it folds flat which is handy.

scout we've got blackout blinds in our upstairs bedrooms so I make a point of putting them down at about an hour before bedtime. Then we go around the house (me and William) and close all the other blinds in any rooms he sees so he gets the message it's nearly bedtime. He likes to help me pull the cords!

fidelma and princess sorry to hear about the poorly babies

weaning William has also liked avocado ruby. It dries like cement though - a bugger to get off the floor... I've also been giving him baby porridge which he likes - particularly enjoys sucking it off the spoon.

William is crying again as night three of PUPD. Fingers crossed it's quicker. I feel so evil! DH is finding it hard too and every morning when I wake William up, DH worries that he wont love him anymore

fidelma · 28/03/2010 10:58

boob if you see this there are some people talking about blood pressure in babies dropping when they eat on the allergies thread.I thought it may be helpful.how is m ?

Scout19075 · 28/03/2010 21:25

Good weekend?

HappyTangerine · 28/03/2010 22:07

Scout Had an unexpectedly lovely afternoon with Joseph while his dad was at the Liverpool football match. We managed over an hour out in the buggy (longest time ever) without screaming, lots of playing and tummy time and some blw banana which he put straight into his mouth and started ferociously munching! I really enjoyed being with him today, the more he can do, the less frustrated he is.

How about you?

Iggly The Baby Bjorn bouncer is the one baby item I cannot do without. I got mine 2n hand on ebay (seller listed it at 5:14am and I pounced on the buy it now at 5:16am - keen, moi?)

J awake, gotta go x

HumphreysCorner · 29/03/2010 10:30

Morning all, just marking my place. Have a sore throat and feel under the weather.

Hope all OK.

lal123 · 29/03/2010 10:39

Hi all

HC - hope you're feeling better soon, nothing worse than feeling ill and still having to be Mummy!

Am at all of you who've not been visited by AF. With both DD1 and DD2 AF has arrived here after about 3 months - despite exclusively bfing and feeding regularly at nights - booooooo!

We've not really started getting Maia into a night-time routine. WE've put her down in her cot a couple of times when DD1 goes to bed (around 7.30)and she settles well - we just need to be more consistent.

Better go - she shouting! THink I need a bouncer!

rubyslippers · 29/03/2010 11:37

boo to feeling poorly HC

hi Lal ...

How is everyone doing? Miserable and wet here but we are off out soon

house is a disaster zone after the weekend and an unexpected late night - but it was for a nice reason as my BF had a baby so we went to visit ... had a nightmare journey home (took and hour and 20 mins when it should have taken 30 mins) and arrived just in time as Rubes had woken up for a feed

Looking forward to a long weekend with DH around

what is everyone else up to?

x

princessmel · 29/03/2010 11:53

Hi all

HC get well soon, I'm fed up of bugs. We've all been ill, in turn, since feb.
Ds1 is off today as his asthma was playing up at the weekend, but now he's totally fine!! I was going to take him in later on but I can't leave the house as need to wait in for a surveyor man. Plus ds2 is in bed.
He's getting harder to put down in the day actually, I'm sure dd got easier the more she did it...?
I have to do a weak form of pupd now and he really cries. He used to be able to be pat shusshed.

scout our weekend was ok thanks dh was/is on call (24/7) this week so everytime his phone rings we're on edge!
I did a silly thing on sunday and took ds1 to a party a whole month early!!!! Ooops

BellaCullen · 29/03/2010 14:26

Hi everyone,

HC hope you feel better soon its hard when you`re ill and you still have to look after dc.

No periods here either i remember with ds1 it took 3 months after I stopped bf and with dd was also sometime after stopping bf so hoping it will be the same this time.
Booo for you lal for having it back already even though you`re ebf.

No night-time routine here at all still have to rock him to sleep and then put him down took over an hour yesterday.I qould love to be able to just put him down awake and he goes asleep by himself but no such luck.
Got Hv coming for a home visit on Wed regarding his weight,am concerned as to why shes coming round and didnt just ask me to come into clinic. Not worried about his weight myself just his sleep really.

Nathaniel finally rolled over from front to back on sat did do on the bed so was easier to roll but still counts.

HT am so of babybjorn bouncer would have loved to get one but way too expensive and couldnt find a bargain on e-bay.Glad you had a lovely afternoon. Its hard when theyre are really clingy and want to be held all the time.

Princessmel were the spots chickenpox? Its bloddy annoying when they get it as you`re stuck indoors.
My friends dd has got it and day before spots come out we were at ballet together in a room to watch kids do a little show.So now have to wait and see whether ds2 has caught it but hope not.
DD had it badly and ended up in hospital with it as she got infection in her foot from it that went into the bone. She was in hospital 10 days and on iv-drip antibitoics for 4 weeks. This was 2 years ago no lasting effects and foot all fine afterwards.I know it was an exception and ds1 was fine when he got chickenpox but am just a bit paranoid after that.

Its DDs birthday today shes 4.Time flies so quickly its so sad and shes starting school in September .Shes got her bf round to play and we`ll do presents and cakes after DS1 comes home from school.

Will let you know how it goes with HV xxx

Scout19075 · 29/03/2010 22:10

Marking my spot but just wanted to share -- we have the tickets for our trip back to the States. WAHOO! Just Sebby and I are going (no DH) and we're going for 12 days. I couldn't wait and told my Mom and she and Dad are very excited now as well. YAY!!!

HappyTangerine · 29/03/2010 23:25

Arrrgghhhhh. Bloody British Summer Time. Anyone else's (albeit loose) sleep routine gone out the window since the clocks changed? It's 11.15pm and Joseph is so wide awake you'd swear he'd been on caffiene all day. Same last night. Turn the clocks back!

We had our last baby massage class today. I felt we really earned that certificate! Have bf group and then weaning class tomorrow so busy day IF we ever get any sleep.

Bella Belated Happy Birthday to your DD!

HC Get well soon

lal 3 months thats's rotten luck!

Scout Yay for you and Sebby! I bet it all seems real now. You must all be so excited. Don't forget to take some pics-we can have some transatlantic photos on our facebook group.

J crying something that sounds suspiciously like umma/mamma (dh insisted on teaching him umma )and dh is approaching with him so sorry, gotta go-I wish you all a good nights sleep![pray] x

Scout19075 · 30/03/2010 10:13

HT So very excited, yes. I have a FB album from our first trip -- maybe I should put one or two of those on our FB group.

HC Feel better soon. I hate being sick period...can only wonder how I'll cope now that I have DS.

BC Yay for the rolling!

princessmel Were the spots the pox? I didn't have the chickenpox until I was 15 -- got out of my sophomore year finals. But man was it hell. My mom had had shingles as a child and the doctors thought some of the immunity had been passed to me (she'd send me to houses with raging pox trying to get me to get them and it wasn't until I my sister brought them into the house I finally got them). Wondering how long it will before Sebby gets them.

princessmel Depends on the night depends if I feed Seb to sleep or not. He had been doing really well of having his medicine and a feed and then going into his basket half awake and settling himself. But the last few nights he's been a nightmare and it's been a lot of pat/shush and counting (he likes the sound of DH counting -- deep, slow and calm). I tend to shush/pat but will pick him up if he's hysterical (I can't shush/pat a hysterical baby).

HT How's your migraine?

The weaning is not going well at all. Everything I try rice, porridge, people food all seems to be rejected. And I've noticed that since I've started trying Seb's had a windy problem at bedtime -- could be a coincidence, I don't know. He's giving all of the signs (and I do mean ALL) that he's ready but he's not interested. I really wish he'd really dive in, though, as these 1-2 hours all night long are starting to do my head in. I'm not trying to rush it or force it, knowing it'll happen when it's meant to, but I'm so darned tired! I fear I'm becoming irritable at DH again for no reason other than I can't think straight by the time he gets home from work. Poor man.

It's raining here again (I know I choose to live in England, but sometimes the amount of rain is really depressing!) which means that Seb and I probably won't go to Guides tonight as they're going to the local woodlands for a night hike. But not going puts a damper on the delivering of Easter Eggs plan. Think we'll go on a delivery drive today. And Seb has some daffs and a picture to give to his "adopted Grandma" for Easter as well. Yes, I think a delivery run is in order.....

princessmel · 30/03/2010 12:02

Hello

No not the pox...! They have not become puss filled and still look like pink bumps, on his tummy. Must be viral...

Dd and ds1 got it very mildly (1or2 spots) when they were 1 ish but got it again when dd was 2 (on her birthday) and when ds1 was 4. He came out in spots 2 weeks to the day after dd did.

Lovely news scout Very exciting!!

bella maybe it is a routine checking up appt following on from his operation??

F doesn't roll really, just chews his toys, hands, muslin etc.

I had a bit of a sweary/whispered tantrum this morning...ds2 was awake (singing/cooing/feeding etc) from 5 - 6 ish am and I was just not too impressed. Not with F, just with the being awake business!!
I knew the older dc's would wake as soon as he dropped off and I was having a 'it's all down to me...I'm always awake while everyone else is sleeping' moment! He fell asleep at 6.20 till 7.45 though so I did manage a teeny bit more resting before getting up to do uniform/breakfast/drinks bottles/shower and wash my hair/ do Lily's hair- she wanted 4 plaits...etc etc..

fidelma · 30/03/2010 19:20

I am feeling slightly under the weather and we are in the middle of a raging storm, the bird table has fallen over and the wind is wild.Only 1 degree and it has been sleeting all day.I am so sick of winter I want it to be warm with the children playing outside. We have been inside for 6 months

Connor is struggeling to go down tonight.I need him to go to sleep as when he is up he only wants to be held. Not very easy.

He has another tooth, likes rolling onto his side but not complete rolls (unless I tuck his arm under him)

He says Hay O for Hello. (he has done that for months) some of his other sounds sound like the other dc names. No Japaneese though !!! and he isn't counting backwards in French but we will get there !

OMG he is still crying !!!!

BellaCullen · 30/03/2010 19:54

Scout yay for booking your flights.Have the same problems regarding the weaning,Nathaniel is not interessted in baby porridge or anything puree at all but likes to chew on a piece of bread and pear sometimes. Will see what the HV suggests tomorrow.Seems to have more wind problem too when he does get anything down.BF every 2-3 hours still too ,its like having a newborn.

Princessmel glad its not the pox.Need to wit till next week to see whether he caught it or not.
Nathaniel hasn`t rolled again since sat and loves to chew on any toy ,clothes and especially my hair.

Fidelma hope the storms eases off and you`ll get warmer weather soon.

Off on a mum`s night out with DS1 class.Have a good night xx
