Hope this has worked...

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

i am glad he and the car are ok. When DH had a smack with another car (his fault he reversed too fast back out of a road to let another through, although he had to see through millions of stupidly parked cars parked on corners and a tight curve), it came to about £500 but would have put our premiums up by loads as we have all the no claims bonus deductions. so we paid the guy in cash!

claired21 · 16/02/2010 12:07

Trikken Glad your DH is ok.

Raggie I think the washable wipes, even with plain water, will be better than cotton wool as they'll catch more, iykwim. I'm using at least a dozen cotton wool balls each time I change a nappy... also wondering where cotton wool goes. Is that another landfill issue? Haven't braved taking our nappies out yet... I think I'd only fit 2 in the pram bag for a start and will have to think through the logistics of what I'd need with us. Best of luck for your busy day tomorrow!

Pav I hope Reuben feels better soon. I haven't had a sick baby yet but I'm dreading it. It must be heartbreaking!

Trikken · 16/02/2010 12:08

yeah, dh had a 'bump' with someone nearly three years ago so his insurance had only just come down again. sometimes its just not worth claiming.
the guy that hit ours was not paying attention and thought he could get his big car over a tiny bridge even though dh was already half way across. even two tiny cars wouldnt be able to get across together. ah well.

Has Reuben calmed any yet? poor lamb.

PavlovtheCat · 16/02/2010 12:17

his fever is down to 37.9, so ok for now and he is calm as long as i hold him tight. I could not even answer the phone a minute ago as he was distressed that i moved away from himm he sort of squealed like 'come baaaaaack' and so i came back! luckily i managed in that time pick the phone p even though i missed it, got back to bed, cuddled in to him and called DH back (it is always him!)

helips · 16/02/2010 12:30

Typing one handed so excuse any typo's!

pav your poor ds, hope he feels better soon.

trikken hope your dh is ok now.

ds is really into lady ga ga and loves watching her video but I am not too happy about it as most of the time she is dancing in her underwear, dh doesn't seem to mind funnily enough!

Really tired, ds up from 3.30am till 4.30am, when will my toddler start sleeping through the night again?

Laugs · 16/02/2010 15:30

Can't keep up! I've been reading every day, but ust when I think about posting someone cries...

Raggie did you have any more luck with the pump? I've tried manual and electric and neither work for me, but I usually get enough doing it by hand. I normally do it about 3 times a day and get 10oz or so altogether. It probably takes 10-15 mins each time, but that's got MUCH quicker the more I've done it. When I'm back to feeding on both sides I'll probably just do it once a day, if that.

Ursi In the night James can sometimes settle not on the boob. I lie next to his basket, propped on a pillow so he can see me, and stroke his tummy and say shh shh. We normally both fall asleep like this. In the evening and daytime (unless out) he definitely needs a feed to sleep - even if he's full up of EBM, he wants to go on for a couple of mins.

hobnob57 · 16/02/2010 15:38

back again after another long break. DD2 has been napping now for 4 hours and I don't know what to do with myself. Her usual is only up to an hour, mostly more like 10 mins. I'm about to BURST! Nursing my left boob with a warm mug of tea as I type... And have just realised I haven't changed her bum since I got her dressed . Poor dote.

Hope all are well and reasonably jolly. No valentine's mush in our house - I got DH a card and whisky since it happened to be me who did the shopping last week, and so by default I got nothing but a morning snuggle. was nice though.

Isla still not particularly settled, so looking forward to jabs on Monday when she'll have a day or two of mega napping (bad mummy). She'll also get her head re-measured to check it's not going to burst since it was above the 98th centile last time! She's been moved from ranitidine to omeprazole for reflux but I don't know if it's helping or hindering. She's really been struggling with wind and poos since, but it also coincides with us all catching the Cold From Hell off DD1 so it could be that. I wish you could keep variables to a minimum with babies so that you actually have half a clue what's going on! The HV spoke to the paed dietician for me last week, who was suggesting that I avoid eggs as well as dairy and soy (and I'm not doing gluten either), just as I had finished scoffing an omelette. So that could be a factor too. grrr.

I might seriously have to go and wake this baby up or else I'm going to get blocked ducts!

hobnob57 · 16/02/2010 15:46

Can't remember who was asking about reusable wipes - I just cut up a muslin into smaller squares and dip it in water (or not, depending on severity of poo!).

I remember weeks ago folk chatting about establishing a bedtime routine. By the time Isla is bathed and dressed, she is ready for sleep but I still have to wash DD2, brush teeth, read story, etc. so she can sometimes whimper herself to sleep on the bathroom floor . However, when we have a feed she will rarely sleep deeply enough to stay asleep for long. I'm just not ready myself for investing time in shhh-ing her and setting up bedtime in crib upstairs yet, so we are still chained to the sofa of an evening. I occasionally manage to get her onto her bean bag so I can go to the loo!

A consequence of this is that she is falling asleep earlier in the evening (usually, but there's no guarantee) and so is now waking during the night for a feed instead of making it to 6:30 which used to be the norm. It seems we can't have it both ways!

Right, I really am going to burst now. In case I don't make it back for a wee while again, love to you all xx

scarlotti · 16/02/2010 16:01

pav sorry to hear reuben is poorly, hope he's better soon

hobnob yet another food item off your list hope she manages to settle soon or you'll be down to bread and water

trikken hope your dh is ok

well done to those of you with the reusable nappies, I did buy some to try but decided I've enough on my plate without adding loads more washing to the mix. I'm also firmly in the wet wipes camp now too, luckily he seems fine with that and hasn't had any nappy rash.

We're back to feeding 2 hourly again today so let's hope it is a ruddy spurt and not a taste of things to come. ursi am hoping he'll follow Paula's example and settle into longer breaks once we're out the other side of this marathon.
I do take him in with me now at the night feeds and feed him lying down. I tend to fall asleep so he ends up next to me for the last few hours of the night, probably not ideal but it certainly makes a difference to how rested I feel the next day.
He will go down ok when he goes to bed so am hoping I'm not creating problems for myself by taking him in with me.
Dh has done his back in, sympathy isn't very forthcoming - am not a very good wife really

ursigurke · 16/02/2010 16:05

pav, I hope Reuben is already gettin better soon.
I don't know if Paula is early in her physical development but she is definitely very interested in her body. She can spend hours (ok, that's not true) having her legs up in the air and holding her feed with her little hands. That looks sooooo cute.
And she loves "standing" and jumping up and down. Her dad used to compete in races and her name is Paula after all

claire, I only use washable wipes at home. I always use water. If she has done a big poo, I sometimes clean with oil which works great. I use cotton wool with sweet almond oil which I use for her massage too. It is colourless and after wiping her already with water cleaned bum, the cotton wool is really yellow.

Ok, the sadest child in the world just woke up in the basket next to me. Waking up seems to be the most terrible thing in the world

claired21 · 16/02/2010 18:53

Did everyone see this in today's press??? Scary stuff!

I've filled a little spray bottle with cooled camomile tea for using with the wipes, I think Ethan has sensitive skin so hopefully this will help keep nappy rash at bay.

Pav Hope your little lad is feeling better.

Ursi I know what you mean about the saddest child in the world... Ethan has a petted lip which would break your heart! He's currently snoring away beside me.

Trikken · 16/02/2010 20:17

dh told me about it when he got home, and just watched your link, amazing, he still looks like a little baby but walking!

VenusInfers · 16/02/2010 20:56

Just lurking as I have pretty much nothing to contribute at the mo - except the cute photo of my LO that I've put on my profile.

pav really hope Reubin is feeling a lot better soon. I can almost hear that sad little, 'pick me up, mum' cry. Poor moppet.

Has anyone else got a sore back? I try to be careful how I pick up my lumpish healthy 17lb baby, but still have been aching quite badly the last few days.

skorpion · 16/02/2010 21:06

Hi All. Sorry I've been awol - busy with visiting father, working a bit, generally doing stuff, really do not know where each day goes!!

claire, raggie I'm using washable wipes, too. I make the camomile tea and add a couple of drops of tea tree oil into a tub to store them in. I agree, they do a much better job than cotton wool and are so easy to wash with everything else. I also put Lucy in washable nappies, using two, sometimes three in a day. Haven't tried overnight yet. From that subject to the one about babies' future: I think I may have a comedy talent in the making - the first washable nappy coincided with the most mahooosive poo. How is that for timing?

Lucy seems to have worked out a routine for the night. She falls asleep around 5-6pm, feeds either awake or in her sleep 10-11pm, then wakes any time from 3-4am for another feed and either goes back to sleep in her crib or stays in bed with me if she doesn't settle. I think we're blessed because she can happily fall asleep on her own at night. It's the daytime sleep she struggles more with. This means I don't get much time in the day to do stuff, but I'm not going to complain about that if she's OK at night.

Hope you're all well.

pavlov hope LO gets well soon, poor sausage. And good luck in court.

Oh, ninja, if you're around and have a minute, please could you post the recipe for that sponge cake? I've lost it.

PavlovtheCat · 16/02/2010 21:38

sorry for the mememe posts, poor reuben's fever is high, and he has had all but his last lot of calpol which i am saving for during the night. bit concerned about how to lower his temp as i cant give him the calpol . He will not settle at all, he is wanting to be on me the whole time, wont be put down at all, and is happiest on my boob(no change there . I called Dr earlier today, he was not overly concerned about fever as it had gone down then, and said eye gunk was usual when babies have colds, but to look out for bloodshot eyes, if whites are normal colour then it is likely a blocked tear duct, and to just keep it clean with warm boiled water and cotton bud. But i might call out of hours for advice if his temp continues to be above 39 for too long now calpol has worn off.

And I am tired, and worried a bit about tomorrow. Builder has been intimidating one of his old employees to try to get him to give evidence to support him, so he is clearly not bothered about being a bully. Oh well, at least it is closer to an end.

Laugs · 16/02/2010 21:54

pavlov poor you and Reuben. The feeding will be helping to keep him cool I think - they always say 'plenty of fluids', so keep it up if you can. It is exhausting being needed constantly. I hope you get some rest tonight. Have you tried opening the window, taking off a layer of clothing/ bedding etc? (Sorry that's probably so obvious)

Anyone else watching One Born Every Minute? It's making me wince with the memories. Only 10 weeks ago but it almost feels like another lifetime.

Trikken · 16/02/2010 21:56

bugger, wanted to watch that, missed it last week too but watched it on c4 catch-up. I felt like that when watching it too Laugs.

Laugs · 16/02/2010 22:04

I missed last week's, was it good? The midwife in this one said 'a good day is when all the babies come out crying', which made me want to cry as both of mine had to resuscitated, so I never got to hear that newborn cry.

venus love your gorgeous James valentine!

claired21 · 16/02/2010 23:18

Last week's was better, it was funny at bits and more emotional. Although the older dad last week was a dick, pardon my French! And why the 18yr old son was in the labour suite I do not know. Hopefully there will be an update on the baby with the bowel condition. This week's was just frustrating. I'm glad that girl's mum had words!!

laugs Ethan didn't need resuscitated but didn't cry either. I don't think all babies are born crying.

Venus love the Cupid! And sore back here too ever since the labour. Tips on picking up babies from cots while avoiding twinges gratefully received.

claired21 · 16/02/2010 23:21

Thinking of you pav, hopefully tomorrow will go well and Reuben will start to perk up. X

PavlovtheCat · 17/02/2010 00:16

Just been to see out of hours Dr with Reuben up at the hosp. Made to feel small and pathetic and clearly a mother who does not know what the eff i am doing. Rather than walking out there feeling reassured that my boy was ok, i felt like a fool for even taking him there, despite the out of hours telephone Dr telling me to go straight up.

scarlotti · 17/02/2010 08:05

Pav don't feel stupid, I'd have gone up there too. Hope today goes ok with the builder and you're not too tired to give him what for. Hope Reuben is better today - my old doc said a cool bath with the cold water tap running into it is good for a fever. Not sure it's comfy for a baby but might work.

Watched one born every minute last night, DD(15) watched it with me and seemed a bit horrified at labour she kept asking if it hurt that much .... uh, yes Think that might put her off for a while!!

Both DS' have jabs today booster and MMR booster for DS1 and 2nd set for DS2. Is going to be a traumatic afternoon, esp as DS1 had his SF jab last month so knows it's going to hurt. Poor lamb.

Slightly better night last night. Fed him when he woke at 2am and then he went back to sleep until 5am in his bed. Put him in with me then and he fed/slept until just before 7. Am definitely feeling more rested for being able to feed laying down in bed.

Laugs · 17/02/2010 08:16

Hope you're ok Pav? I've been made to feel like that before and it's horrible. You have to go with your instinct though, especially with a little baby.

Good luck for today x

ursigurke · 17/02/2010 09:10

Pav, don't feel stupid! They shouldn't give you that feeling! With a little baby you have to go in soon not too late!
I hope he is feeling better today, sorry that I have no good tips for you. As children we always got towels with cold water (and ideally vinager) wraped around our lower legs. Don't know though if it is done with little ones too.
Good luck with your builder today. I'm sure he is already afraid of you.
scarlotti, good to hear that you had a better night. Sorry for your poor DSs and their jabs today

helips · 17/02/2010 09:19

Good luck with the builder today pav, how is little Reuben this morning?
