I agree with you that people shouldn't be terrified of it. I wish I hadn't been... but at the same time, I think there needs to be a balance. Like you said - it does hurt a LOT and know what to expect, but that it doesn't have to be horrible.
You're right - the media does it's bit to frighten. I just also don't like the women who paint this rosy picture and then as soon as childless person leaves the room, admit how much it hurt!

I was absolutely terrified.
But, I also thought one of two things would happen.
It would be like the labour stories on TV (horrifyingly painful and awful) or it would be like the rosy women's stories - "it doesn't really hurt, I could barely feel anything at all"
When I felt the first round of contractions I did not think it was possible to have the lovely experience. I also had other issues... but people need to hear a balance.
Pistachio I think you're going to be great at helping women prepare for it.

CantSleepWontSleep · 18/02/2010 07:49

I really do believe that a positive mental attitude helps a lot in labour though star, so maybe those women didn't want to spoil that for the ones that hadn't had children yet.

So much for thinking that the zoo would wear them out enough and give them enough fresh air to ensure a good night's sleep for everyone .

StarExpat · 18/02/2010 07:59

True, but then you have to know that they are going to see the horrifying stories on tv as well. So it won't be an experience at one of those poles. It can be happy medium. Painful but cheerful iyswim. I had other issues obviously but I think they should know it's going to push your pain threshold. I had a friend who read all about hypnobirthing and was convinced that she could give birth without feeling an ounce of pain. She was totally blissful about it all pregnancy. Positive attitude about birth, excited to give birth, got a pool for home...etc. She ended up in hospital with an epidural and she was scared because despite using all of the techniques she had learned, it still bloody hurt like hell and she figured she must be doing something wrong.

Sorry for the not so sleepy night, csws

KSal · 18/02/2010 08:10

Completely agree re the positive mental attitude bit. I watched the latest episode of one born every minute last night and was quite shocked by the young girl who seemed to be going into panic overdrive - it seemed like she was sabotaging herself by reacting the way she did. (I know its easy to say when you are just watching!) I thought the midwives dealt with her pretty well, because it was stressing me out just watching her!

drops went in ok last night... when i say ok i mean there was much struggling and crying... but i followed it up quickly with a trip to the kitchen for raisins, which seems to help. Its getting better very quickly thankfully!

StarExpat · 18/02/2010 08:15

Raisins are a fav here, too! I don't like how they stick to their teeth, but Q just loves them.
Glad the conjunctivitis is clearing up quickly. It must be so hard to see them suffering with it

CantSleepWontSleep · 18/02/2010 13:27

Arrrrrgghhh sleep times are horrible here again. Ds has taken to insisting on dh putting him down rather than me, but even that often doesn't work. We've both tried just now (he def needs nap as was falling asleep in car just before lunch, but I wanted him to have lunch then nap at home) and he's been screaming for half an hour or more, and clings to us for dear life when we try to put him down .

Sounds like a lovely day, myjob!

csws that is awful when they cling to you for dear life when you try to lower them down, isn't it? Poor D. And as he's such a gentle soul anyway that would double the heartbreak.

CantSleepWontSleep · 18/02/2010 16:13

Well I've just got back from dropping dd at her playdate (and having a cuppa with the mother) and found ds sleeping on a sleeping dh in the living room, so I guess he woke distraught half way through his nap again. Poor soul. And I'm abandoning him to go out tonight too .

Oh Poor Jenwa. I hope she's doing OK.

aubergenie · 18/02/2010 21:21

Another believer in positive thinking here. I did a hypnobirthing course because the anti-natal courses at the hospital were full, and the NCT messed up getting me on a course. I think the stuff about it not being "pain" is a load of b***s frankly, but it really did help to keep me calm and focus, even during the pushing stage.

What a day. Playgroup this morning where I rashly decided to invite a few mums and babies over the afternoon for a play and a chat which was lovely but meant that I had a manic three quarters of an hour removing washing from various surfaces and vacuuming.
Dp came home and commented how lovely it is when I have friends over because the flat is tidy.

Now I'm trying to list a load of stuff on Ebay. Tedious.

aubergenie · 18/02/2010 21:24

Oh and Star. A while ago and you were saying that Clarks shoes were too expensive for you. Last week, my friend bought some nice shoes for her ds from Next that were only about £11. However, I just tried to find them on the website but couldn't, sorry.

I've found baby gap and gap kids shoes to be wide and cheaper Thanks so much for thinking of me when you heard that, though, aubergenie!

StarExpat · 19/02/2010 07:30

oh, I haven't been able to run this week because I now have shin splints. Is that what you call it here? Anyway, they are excruciating even at a fast walk a the moment. I think I need to just find a substitute exercise.
Any ideas? I don't like the cold. I don't want to have to go to the gym because I like to be home or out with Q when I do it if possible.

StarExpat · 19/02/2010 09:50

I hope Jenwa and family are doing ok. How awful.

50ftQueenie · 19/02/2010 14:49

We have an indoor swimming pool! But it's in what we laughably call the conservatory and therefore not very convenient. It is very annoying as we have had the plumber out before when a tiny bit of water appeared out there and he said it was nothing, just rain water. Nothing but rain water eh? Well, considering there hasn't been any rain since this morning, I'd better find out how my house is managing to make floods of water appear from nowhere as I am sure that I'd make a fortune!

Which bit do you call the conservatory 50ft ? Pool not great wherever it is though.

Poor jenwa.

50ftQueenie · 19/02/2010 22:16

There is no longer a pool is has mysteriously drained away to who-knows-where....! DH went out to look at and burst out laughing. He said "Do you think that massive hole in the top of the drainage pipe (from the bath) has anything to do with it?" How the hell has that happened?!

CSWS - Outside the back door (the one we use) there is an old original Edwardian conservatory (greenhouse type thing I think) but it is a death trap! If there is a strong breeze the whole thing feels ready to break. DH pushed one of the wooden frame bits (when drunk), it fell off and a huge shard of glass fell and embedded in his thumb joint! OUCH!
