Oi! Over 'ere!

I'm using my sick leave well and have just booked a holiday in Oban - we're going to see Balamory and sea eagles, hopefully.

OP posts:

Bozza · 05/10/2005 09:37

Totally understand what you mean Cat. Everyone likes to have answers. Hope you get some soon. Susi - good luck!

Had to take the day off today with DS who's had a really bad cough since last Thursday. Although he's not properly poorly and has kept saying he wants to go to school he's under the weather and very tired because the cough is keeping him awake. He's playing with some playmobil at the moment but I've got him a doctor's appt for later this morning. DD OTOH is really full of life to the point of being a bit giddy all the time and I'm sure its because she's sleeping so well at the moment - averaging about 13.5 hours including nap.

helloween · 06/10/2005 15:02

Hello. At home today - bit of working from home, bit of tidying up as I have 7 people coming round tonight for a sort of meeting (thinking about setting up a parents' group where we live). I love having people round but always get very nervous so dd2 is in nursery so I can clean and I'm off out now to get more snacky stuff.

Dd2 is walking really well now and has settled very well into the next room up at nursery (12 - 18 months). She was 16 months when she went up but our nursery only moves children three times a year. It's a much friendlier room, warmer staff, so we're happier about it too. They also changed the menu recently so I can pretty much let her have the full menu now - apart from the snack menu, which includes crisp sandwiches and lots of crackers, so I ask them to give her fruit and/or yoghurt most days.
Susi - has the baby arrived yet?
Libb - how are things?

kbaby · 09/10/2005 09:57

Susi I hope the baby has arrived.

Ponka and spots, how are you both feeling and how many weeks pg are you both(hope Ive got the right people)

Not much happening here. Hoping to take DD swimming this afternoon.

Our Planning permission came though yesterday for our kitchen extension, horrayy. A new kitchen finally with cupboards that may actually fit food and plates.

helloween · 09/10/2005 20:46

SusiS must have had the baby by now?

Had a little trip to A and E yesterday - managed to close dd2's finger in the door and the nail came off and it swelled up and went very red and floppy so we thought it was broken. She screamed the place down, little sausage. Anyway, they managed an x ray and it's not broken but she's wandering round with this HUGE finger wrapped in about a metre of bandage, just looking at me as if I meant to do it!
Hope everyone else had a better weekend...

Bozza · 09/10/2005 21:05

I'm sure she must have kbaby because she was going to be induced wasn't she if things didn't get moving. Helsy - I know what you mean, they just give you this look don't they. And DD is always coming up right behind me when I am doing something.

Had a busy weekend. Did a bit of gardening yesterday a.m., then DS had a friend over. Then in the afternoon took him to a party at Brewsters which meant I could take DD along too. Then this morning took both kids to the Harvest Festival.

Ponka · 10/10/2005 22:38

Another extension on the May babies thread? Quelle surprise!

Ouch Helsy. Sounds like a really bad day. How is she now?

We had a trip to the hospital the other day, too. Strange story. I'll try and give you the short version. MIL comes down every Friday to watch DS while I'm at work. I got the dreaded call at work from DH that something was wrong but it wasn't DS, it was my MIL. Our cat (who's a bit special and is an indoor cat for medical reasons I won't go into) had escaped and when MIL had caught him, he turned round and attacked her very viciously. Her nails were puntured and some of the scratches were so deep, fat was coming out (sorry tmi?). My parents stepped in and took her to the NHS drop in centre, where they told her they weren't happy to treat her and she had to go and see an hand surgeon at the main hospital. We left work and went to meet her there. They were going to keep her in all night but in the end, let her go and we drove her back home to her house. DS was a little star throughout. I don't think he really knew what was going on.

Kbaby, Spots and I have the same due date. We're about 14/15 weeks. I'm starting to feel a bit better now. Spots, everything o.k? You've not been on for a while. Still no internet access, I guess. In fact, everyone's a bit quiet at the moment (Georgina, Prufrock, Libb etc?)

Susi, hope everything went smoothly.

I'm thinking about going to aquanatal classes at my local swimming pool. They have a creche. I went to see it today and my parents know some people who use it and are happy with it but I don't know if I have the guts. It'll be the first time I've ever left DS with anyone other than family and he's still very clingy (not only that but I'm clingy, too . I might go next week if I have the guts. They even change your baby and bring it down to the poolside afterwards so you can have a swim together, if you want.

Bozza · 11/10/2005 09:45

Ponka that must have been all rather a shock about your cat/MIL etc. I would definitely go for the aquanatal classes - it sounds lovely that they bring DS down afterwards. I used to take DS swimming every week in late pregnancy and it was so lovely to be able to hold him and cuddle him in the water without the weight IYSWIM.

GeorginaA · 11/10/2005 17:09

Oi oi peeps.

I've got told off and ordered to come over here for an update

Um. What have I told you recently? Did I mention ds2 locking me out of the house? Him being incredibly good at the old strops? He's started to sign like a little trooper now ('cat', 'hat', 'dog', 'more', 'duck', 'shoe') but the only really understandable vocalisation is 'nah', of course.

He's just been playing Kneebouncers on my computer, so I'm likely to not be able to mumsnet ever again...

helloween · 11/10/2005 20:51

Ponka, the aquanatal classes sound great and a good way of leaving DS with others for a short time - and he gets to have fun with you afterwards! If it's a creche, presumably they are qualified nns so they should have a policy on crying ie. whether they will come and get you if he is distressed - or vice versa . I went to post-natal aerobics organised by Sure Start and they had a creche. They asked about dummies, bf or bottle and so on beforehand and would bring babies to mothers if they couldn't calm them.

Dd2 is fine thanks. DH and I decided a long time ago that we wouldn't attempt to put either of them in nursery if they weren't feeling 100% (we feel bad enough about doing it anyway), and luckily both our employers are pretty understanding, so DH had a couple of days off with her this week which they've both loved. As you can imagine, the finger bandage was covered in yoghurt, mashed potato and God knows what else by Monday. It's off altogether now and the finger seems fine (though nailless). She's had trouble sleeping so we've given her calpol as the nurse at the hospital said it would be tender for a while.

Just had to calm dd1 who became very distressed after we'd put her to bed because she counted to 41 (sheep ) and realised that's my age and it's not far off 100, and managed to convince herself that DH and I wouldn't "be alive long enough to look after me and dd2". How heartbreaking is that? We've had a long conversation (over a hallowe'en fairy cake - I know, Very Bad Mother) about how OLD some of our relatives are and they're still alive...

Bozza · 12/10/2005 20:50

Glad DD2 is getting better helsy and hope DD1 is over her trauma! See I managed to get Georgina to come and post. Think she is busy with her blog though these days.

Got rung up at work today by the dinnerlady because DS is not well. Turns out he has got tonsilitis which the doctor reckons is because he was under the weather from the cough he had last week (two days off school). DH is in Germnay so thats my working week done and another 1.5 days hols down the swanee. Feel a bit for DS though - he's having a hard time of it atm. DD miraculously seems to be missing out on all these bugs. She's had a couple of colds but nothing too major.

Does seem very quiet round here these days.....

Prufrock · 14/10/2005 18:23

Hello - I did disappear for a while - I realised I was wasting far too much time here - especially now I'm meant to be studying, and it was sort of all or nothing - if I sat down for a quick check on you lot I'd still be here 2 hours later.

Dd is at pre-school 4 mornings a week, and ds has started going to nursery for 1 day a week - so I get a whole 2.5 hours without any kids, and then an afternoon to concentrate on dd. We usually go swimming and then shopping and for very sinful hot chocolate with marshmallows!

Ds has turned into a monster. He throws the most terrible tantrums - only lasting 30 seconds or so but usually involving wither throwing food on the floor or pulling his sisters hair. We are sometimes getting 20 a day. But when he's not being frustrated or angry, he's wonderful. Still won't talk, although he has learned to say rah-wah (roger) Did I ever mention I know have a puppy? 12 week old black labrador, who has totally cured my longing for another child.

So much so in fact that I've jsut had an Implanon fitted, and after some really painful bruising in the days after insertion, it's brilliant. Periods are much lighter, and all my awful symptoms - cramps, itching, shutdown of digestive system, have really lessened, and this is only the first month. I would highly recommend it.

Good luck bozza. the insertion really didn't hurt at all, but it was quite painful for a few days afterwards, and you can't really use your arm to lift anything heavy (like a toddler) at certain angles. They don't tell you about that bit, but it is apparently perfectly normal. you also get to completley gross out friends by pressing on one end and having a moving bump under your skin! (Which I can now do without feeling anything at all)

Bozza · 15/10/2005 14:35

Will I be OK for driving? Also would it be best to leave DD at home? The appt is 1.45 but the clinic is quite a distance with parking issues so I was hoping that DH could work at home and I could put DD down for her nap just before I go and then if I wasn't back in time DH could also get DS from school.

Prufrock · 15/10/2005 14:50

You'll be fine for driving, it's just heavy lifting that stresses the bicep - so no dumbbells . Mine didn't actually hurt unitil the next day when the bruising developed. And if dd would be happy to sit in her pushchair facing away (needle used for insertion looks scary and you don't want to give her a phobia) you could take her, but IMO it's a good excuse to get a child free 30 minutes.

Judd · 15/10/2005 22:34

Hello, anybody still around? Sorry, haven't posted for a while....it just doesn't seem as crucial as in the days of burping technique, sleep routine, weaning etc. However, I'm more than happy to exchange idle chitchat...just that mine would probably contain as much about DD as DS, and the thread wasn;t meant for her.
DS is also having a crack at tantrums = DD didn't really bother - but I can't really take them seriously so tend just to lie him down and let him get on with it. Has Susi posted a birth announcement yet? I keep looking but haven't seen anything.
Bozza - i saw your thread where you said that DS still played with his toy kitchen. DD (4 in Dec) never had one and I've been wondering about getting one as a joint Christmas prezzie. Is there longevity in it for DD? She isn't great at role playing/imaginitive play so could help her in that respect.
Took DD to Balamory Live in Manchester last week. She really enjoyed it but was more excited by the taxi there and the bus back.

SusiS · 16/10/2005 20:33

hey girls!!!! we did it
our lovely girl was born on the 6th october at 1.22am; 8lb4oz and 51cm - and only 10 hours!! - natural birth

she is great!! last night she slept 8 hours!!!! and during the day she needs feeding about every 4 hours and the rest she's asleep
gosh, no comparison to lucas!

oh, he adores her! first thing in the morning he asks for her 'keykee?' and cuddles her and gives her kisses. even shares his dummy and teddy with her
well, i won't go into the 'rougher' playmodes he's got up his sleeves. but not as bad as i expected.

hope you all are doing well

Judd · 16/10/2005 21:33

CONGRATULATIONS Susi! I'm so happy for you - long may the sleeping and the loving older brother continue!

GeorginaA · 16/10/2005 21:36

CONGRATS Susi!!!!

kbaby · 16/10/2005 21:48

Congrats susi

Bozza · 16/10/2005 22:01

Wow congratulations Susi. Thats lovely.

Prufrock I think I will try and leave DD because its right across nap time anyway so shouldn't disrupt DH from working too much and since I could do with him being at home to potentially collect DS anyway.... Judd did I really say that DS played with his toy kitchen? Because he hasn't got one. Obviously am losing my marbles. Anyway we are getting one for DD for Christmas because I think she will love it - she potters away at DS's work bench and I think they will play together. I think that as your DS gets older - they might well do imaginative play together which would be good. DS and DD are just getting there - but as DS is a bit older than your DD (5 in Feb) he is maybe better at directing it IYSWIM.

Ponka · 16/10/2005 22:46

Congratulations Susi . Glad everything's going so well!

Judd · 17/10/2005 13:09

Bozza -now I'm thinking that I misread it. Oh well, could have potential for DS and then the eagerly-anticipated Playing Together Without Mummy! DD isn't great at this although she managed 20 minutes independent Knex-ing this morning!
DD has speech therpay check today - I'm hoping they will sign her off. Luckily DH is working at home so I don't have to take DS with me. And we've got to start the looking round schools palaver.....yikes.

Bozza · 17/10/2005 13:23

My two are very up and down with the playing together without mummy tbh Judd. Eventually I would expect yours to be better because the age gap is nearly a year less. The other night they were dancing away to Strictly Come Dancing and carrying Halloween pumpkins full of matchbox cars around and having a great time. Until DD overfilled hers and couldn't lift it.

Is the school going to be a difficult choice? We live in a village so either go with the one school or make waves and try and get into one further away.

Absolutely knackered. Up for 3.5 hours with DD last night. Don't know what got into her. She was fine if a little stroppy this morning (but that would be due to tiredness). DS is still off school with tonsilitis. I would really like to send him back tomorrow so that I can go to work for half a day (CM not available this week because her Mum has died) but I'm not sure if he will be well enough. Anyway both kids are in bed asleep so I ought to head off for a quick nap I think!

Prufrock · 17/10/2005 20:15

Congratulations Susi. long may the sleeping continue.
