Oh and Beans I think the dinner at yours refusal is fair, get out there girl if he doesn't want to pay for a sitter he can stay home.

Veggiemummy · 10/02/2010 09:47

Of forgot to say we've had an inch of snow fall overnight, was a chilly cycle to school this morning but as it's a half day at school we'll be able to to for a play in the snow this afternoon. DS2 had a lovely play in our back garden this mornig, those shoes where expensive but they are really good even in the snow.

Aubergines · 10/02/2010 09:51

I watched that baby program last night LadyT. I agree it was weird. The natural birth was overshadowed by the cold, unsupportive husband and bullying midwife who kept asking the husband about being a policeman at really inappropriate moments (like 1 min after the birth of his son). And the c-section was overshadowed by the silent boyfriend who never tried to comfort his nervous partner and the fact she was unable to get out of bed to see her critically ill baby and her partner declined to see him either. Both very unsettling experiences for those new mums. The lack of a voiceover also meant we got none of the context and background info that may have made it interesting.

Where are you holidaying ZJ? I hope you have a lovely time. And Summer I hope you enjoy Barcelona. I spent a month there when I was 19 and loved it.

Kayzr · 10/02/2010 09:59

The teenage son thing was so weird!!! I just couldn't imagine why she would want him there.

Beans33 · 10/02/2010 10:06

Oh no - not sure I want to watch it now!

Aubergines · 10/02/2010 10:07

Sorry. I wrote that last post about two hours ago but phone just decided to post it now. Lots of cross posts which made it look odd I had directed my comments only at LadyT. I was not ignoring the rest of you who watched Born Every Minute!

Glad you had a good night out Kayz.

TheInvisibleHand · 10/02/2010 10:13

JJ - not the same murderous Scottish doctors - this pair were Hunter and Smellie.

I also watched bits of the baby programme - odd, mostly brought back the boring tense bits of birth when you are hanging around, having contractions and your partner is uselessly sitting in the corner not really knowing what to do with himself (at least mine was).

SL - another one to say Barcelona is fantastic. I fourth the Picasso museum, but the Gaudi really is the highlight - my favourites are the Parc Guell, and also there is a trip up to the roof of La Pedrera, which is definitely worth doing. Its not really the time of year, but I'd also take a walk on the beach - I just love the fact there is a beach right in the middle of the city. Have a fabulous time.

Kayz - glad you had a good night out - it makes so much difference doesn't it? DH and I finally got out with a crowd of friends on Saturday night for a belated birthday celebration and I think we both felt like different people at the end of it.

Beans33 · 10/02/2010 10:18

Ooh, yes, SL - I also did the cable car trip across the bay, then walked back down - it was lovely. And La Pedrera is beautiful. and the unfinished cathedral. All brilliant. And just walking around is so fantastic, soaking up the atmosphere. You lucky duck. I'm not going on any holidays this year. Woe is me. But I will have a little nipper to console me - and keep me awake at night!!!

SummerLightning · 10/02/2010 10:56

Yes I am going to Barcelona this weekend, DH has a conference there next weekend so we are going to spend a few days there beforehand. Have actually been there before and loved it but can't remember my way around as it was ages ago. Also I have a feeling that we were 5 minutes after closing for the Picasso museum or something last time so will have to make sure we do this this time!! We did do the Sagrada Familia (probably spelt wrong) last time.
Oh and not sure where we are staying but will probably be a boring business hotel!! (but better than somewhere scummy)
Very excited, but must work.
Beans David Tennant and Robert Pattinson!! Tee hee, what are you like, along with admitting a love for Gary Barlow you do make me laugh.

Beans33 · 10/02/2010 11:37

I do love Gary Barlow. Always have, even when he wasn't very attractive. But the other two are beyond my comprehension - never found either of them remotely attractive - until recently! HAHAHA!

Kayzr · 10/02/2010 11:57

Just back from taking D for his jabs. He cried his little eyes out bless him. He didn't cry at his last ones. He did look very impressed with his sticker though. I got told to look out for measles symptoms in 5-10 days.

JollyBear · 10/02/2010 12:45

Just a quick one from me...

Born every minute was very odd, as aub said, neither birth was portrayed very well. The husband was just soooo unsupportive and seemed more interested in amusing their teenage son. I'm sure not all natural births are like that.

The CS brought it all back for me, even down to the chatty female anesthetist. They must all be like that! The poor woman not being able to see her baby was very traumatic.

It did leave me feeling broody though , or should that be .

Oh and orgasms in your sleep SL and beans, no wonder you were both so keen to have another! .

JumpJockey · 10/02/2010 13:31

The baby programme was kinda weird. I guess the older couple have the kind of relationship where they make jokes all the time, as she seemed quite happy and jovial to begin with. it was only later on that he really started to get on my nerves. And as for the son - why on earth had they brought him along? And you can tell I'm a mum now, instead of going "yuk" at the baby with his poor ill tummy like I would have done before, I just wanted to give him a really big cuddle. Maybe the dad was just a bit overwhelemd by the whole thing - as the mum said, I'm not ready to be a mum yet, I've got 11 more days!

Beans - if you DH wants his friends to come over, he can do the cooking for them - sound like a plan?

Naughty dreams. Oh yes, I get those every now and then (but am definitely not pg!). Really must get round to sorting some proper contraception and then we might be out of the desert a bit more. I just find condoms so rampantly un-sexy. Hormonal stuff kills any 'urges' (ahem!), I just don't like the idea of the coil, all that really leaves is the cap. Mmmm yummy!

Kayz poor DS, I took dd to the nurse with a funny rash a few days ago and she yelled like mad, I think they're now at the age where they can remember "hang on, last time I was here that nasty lady stabbed me with a needle". Great news about your night out and that DH is working hard at things.

katie at your dd's adventuring!

off to meet one of dd's godmothers in a pretty riverside pub this afternoon, I wonder if dd will recognise the ducks maybe we need that in our next thread title...!

Beans33 · 10/02/2010 14:27

oh my gosh. I'm nearly asleep at my desk. What do I do??? Seriously, I could nod off. I wish I was at home now, tucked up in bed.

Beans33 · 10/02/2010 14:29

JJ - I'm with you on the coil - too scary - although my sisters both have one and they swear by them. Maybe after this one...

Although I do want one more. Famous last words! See how I feel with 2!

I hope the duck signs come up trumps! I took DD to one signing lesson and I didn't really enjoy it and she cried throughout, so we didnt' go again!

Kayzr · 10/02/2010 14:31

Beans, can you get up and wander about for a bit? That might wake you up a bit.

Beans33 · 10/02/2010 14:33

yes, good idea! Will do that - and maybe nip out for a bit of fresh air. and get a coffee while I'm there!

daisydora · 10/02/2010 15:39

Hello all,

kayz Glad things with DH are improving a bit.

Nope, never got orgasms when pg

I went to Barcelona for my hen do. I would love to offer tales of my cultural experience. However, from my very, very hazy recollections all I can say is there were lots of bars & restaurants on las Ramblas, a bit touristy but good. I also recall a nightclub by the harbour...I was the Queen of the dancefloor. Oh and I never knew I could salsa either till I went to barcelona

Yes funeral is this friday and DH is not good at all. He is very aggressive about just about everything. I got home from work to discover the lightshade has been broken in the lounge. He said he 'does not have to explain himself to me'. Which he doesn't but there were still bits of glass everywhere and my mum had just dropped the DC's back home. Thankfully DS went straight for a nap. I asked why he hadn't hoovered...lets just say I didn't get an answer. I'm just letting him get on with it in the hope that it will start to improve after the funeral. My mum is having the DC's tomorrow and I am going to try and take DH out for the day, I'm thinking long country walk then lunch. Here's hoping he is okay with this!

Beans33 · 10/02/2010 15:51

Oh Daisy - well done you for being so patient and upbeat and making continuous effort. I'm so impressed by you as I think I may have lost my rag by now. I know he's mourning, so you have to look after him, but it doesn't give him the right to treat you badly and not to still put the DCs first. I really feel for you and am hoping that tomorrow's walk does him the world of good. I suppose everyone handles grief in their own way, and actually can imagine my DH being similarly rage-filled and sad. Chin up and well done you for being so fantastically kind about it. You are clearly a wonderful wife. x

LadyThompson · 10/02/2010 16:53

Daisy, I think you are holding up brilliantly in such a tricky situation. Country walk and a pub lunch on your own sounds like a great idea. I don't know if he would be at all receptive to some form of grief counselling after the funeral - that might help him process his anger. On the other hand he might dismiss it and say it won't bring his Mum back (which I must admit was how I felt about counselling but I do know it has helped others). Maybe you could look into it, make a few tentative calls on his behalf?

I am so glad you had a good night out Kayz, I reckon you both really needed it.

To go back to One Born Every Minute (yes, Aubi, I agree that the cs bloke wasn't very supportive either but I think he just seemed really dazed by it all - stunned into silence perhaps?! I think your point about lack of voiceover was excellent - I think the programme makers slipped up there). The cs was just like my elective. I think they are all like that. I had forgotten about the shivering! And yes, Jump, that poor little baby with half his intestines on the outside He was a lovely little chap. I will still watch next week. It's the kind of programme I would have avoided like the plague in my old life. Now I strongly imagine I will be watching the entire series!

What IS the sign for a duck? (I should ask BabyJolly!)

Spent the day freezing at the new house as I waited for the new bathroom stuff to arrive and got more quotes from plumbers. There is no furniture, no loo or running water and no heating. DD was in tons of layers in her Bugaboo and seemed toasty. I was freezing all day, it was vile. I have lots of books in storage and they might have to stay there as the ceilings are variously pointy and atticky, or low with beams, so not a lot of room for bookshelves. Might be able to get some built but even so...

Have you woken up a bit Beans? I've got my scan tomorrow, but I think I am only about 7-8 weeks. Anyway, it's off to London town in the morning for me.

Beans33 · 10/02/2010 17:04

Ooh, how exciting to have the scan - will be a little pulsating blob at this stage, won't it??! just a bean with a heartbeat - gorgeous!! I've got mine next week - very weird. We'll have to look when they have a beak at the genitals as don't want to know what it is!

Sounds like a really cold day. It's so miserable when one is standing still in this sort of weather. Poor you. But exciting for the house to be taking shape!

DH out to pub after dinner tonight, so I will be having a hot bath, watching half an hour of tv, and asleep by 9.30. Brilliant. Bring on David Tennant, I say. If only it was Gary Barlow... Sigh.

LadyThompson · 10/02/2010 17:29

Yes, just a dot with a heartbeat! It's been snowy here today, I felt so sorry for the delivery men taking 28 boxes and a roll top bath down a winding 30 yard path in a blizzard.

Today was the first time I've been in the house and assessed the practicalities of furniture and things. It is exciting, yes, and I feel pleased and proud that we are going to transform a very shabby, dirty cottage that was sinking into disrepair into hopefully a nice family home, but the scale of the work (and the cost) scares me!

Out for supper with DP tonight - his client just got convicted after a week and a half's trial and he isn't too happy and was screaming at DP in the cells afterwards, so he needs cheering up.

I am tired during the day but am still going to bed at the same ludicrous hour. Rubes, if you are lurking, I hope you are ok. Oh and Summer, I mentioned that bar in Barcelona and its wonderful coffees and brandies, but I expect you aren't drinking either at the mo! I am still on the coffee but have cut down a bit. What are the other preggos doing?

LadyThompson · 10/02/2010 17:35

Oh, and I wouldn't turn down Gary Barlow. Or Howard Donald and I think Mark Owen is really sweet. Someone else can have Jason Orange and I have never liked Robbie Williams.

I have been enjoying gloopy, trashy 1980s films. After Flashdance, I also watched Footloose and will probably be watching About Last Night, St Elmo's Fire and The Breakfast Club in the near future Absolutely shameful. If anyone has got any recommendations for similar soppy 1980s guff, my ears are oh so eager. What I really want to watch is loads and loads of episodes of thirtysomething but I don't think they are on dvd.

SummerLightning · 10/02/2010 17:35

I'm on coffee, not on brandy Will have half a beer or so though.
Anyway that review mentioned something about cake. I think I can do cake. I am already getting fat though. I remembered why I put on so much weight to begin with last time. Have said I wasn't going to get fat again but I just HAD to eat with the trying to work and no sleep and exhaustion or I wouldn't have survived the first trimester. I think I will try and not overeat so much from now on though. I am starting to enter the STARVING phase though.
I have also decided that after forgetting several times that I am eating runny eggs this time round.

LadyThompson · 10/02/2010 17:50

It's amazing how you forget what you did last time. I can barely remember anything. I did have mainly decaff in the first trimester, I remember that. Runny eggs frighten the life out of me at any time, so no bother there. They are in the very small list of things I utterly loathe (along with tea). I ate a raw mushroom the other day and realised that was very wrong, cos of toxoplasmosis. Yes, I am very dim about dos and don'ts this time round.
