dandy i've no idea what the book was unfortunately .. sounds infinitely more exciting than what my mum would have had me reading.. famous five, secret seven and nancy drew for ever more if she'd been choosing! if you remember the characters names you could always google.. who knows it may pop up?!

err lol!!! so did i and the results were eye popping

llareggub · 29/01/2010 14:16

Oh yes! SE Hinton. I'd forgotten about her. Did you know she was about 18 (or at least really young) when she wrote The Outsiders?

llareggub · 29/01/2010 14:18

The other thing I wanted to say is that I don't think I'd have liked the internet as a teen. I loved discovering books and thinking that it belonged to me and me alone. I would hated fansites and websites. I would have been so jealous is someone else had talked fondly about any of "my" characters.

runningmonkey · 29/01/2010 14:34

Wow, you lot are amazing remembering those books. I was a right geek as a teenager and read a lot I even won a reading competition at my local library Can't remember standout authors/titles though beyond the usual - Judy Blume, etc that have already been mentioned. Stephen king and James Herbet were favourites when I was about 16. I went through a proper Terry Pratchett phase at one time and the local librarians used to keep the new ones back for me as they came in I also love Tolkien and have read LOTR every summer since I was 15. Didn't read Catcher in the Rye until I was about 25 but remember thinking I would have appreciated it more as a teenager.

lol at your brave googling dandy and Fi Flip I'm very glad that your counselling went well. Thanks for the advice re London. My trains come in at Kings Cross so will have a little look into how to get from there to Waterloo. DH thinks I should come as it would be a good occasion to end my mat leave on. He said he could take the day off and come too but in his words 'I'm a bit worried I might get eaten alive by your internet friends'

running When I mentioned going to London DH was interested too, but when I said why he pulled a face and said he'd give it a miss . The dcs will like it though I think.

I read so much as a teen that I can't remember what TBH. I used to read the 5 book max allowance that our libraries allow every 2-3 weeks. Obviously some of the authors wouldn't mean anything to you, because I also read quite a few Flemish authors. My parents were quite liberal when it comes to sex, so I actually had quite explicit books passed on to me from a fairly early age. Hence me also discovering what a clitoris was fairly early on.

ROFL dandy fi I'm not ever going to try and do that google search. Sometimes even the most innocent thing can bring up eye popping stuff. When I was 19 and the internet was still in it's infancy I had to write something for a writing course and had to use this newfangled thing called the internet. I researched lemurs and the 1st result was a gay porn site

Ds has had his appointment. They said get rid of the pyjama pants, which TBH with needing to wash nappies and having no dryer I don't really want to do, because he's very very wet every morning and I don't fancy daily sheet washing. To keep up with bladder training and a referal to a bladder/bowel nurse specialist due to his daytime urgency. Ds was very embarrassed to have to talk about it at first, but it's been good I think. Especially that another neutral person has talked to him about taking some responsibility too, i.e. getting out of bed for a wee even if it's not nice to leave the nice warm bed and remembering to drink plenty at school. We'll see how he goes from now on. I rewarded him with a Beast Quest book and Lunch at McDonalds, because he definitely found it embarrasing to talk about. And (bad mummy alert) C joined in and had her very own happy meal . Only because 1 isn't enough for DS and dd1 would have been jealous of ds's toy.

belgina · 29/01/2010 14:57

dandy I think you definitel have a good point there about discussing the books being a way for teens of the loner kind to create some sort of support/social network. In fact I once had such a loner au pair who actually did just that. She didn't fit in that much at school, had very strict parents who litteraly didn't let her leave the house much and had even had depression at some point in life (doesn't sound good, but she was one of the best aps we've ever had), but spent an awful lot of time online discussing books (more high brow than the Twilight kind, she ws v. intelligent) with likeminded teens who she then went on to meet in rl. So here a teen who would have been a loner pre-internet days actually got to build up a circle of virtual friends thank to the internet.

Gotta go now. School pick up time...

Tummum · 29/01/2010 19:03

Evening everyone.

Exciting day today, the business opportunity I am investigating is looking very positive. So I might be running my own business and quitting before I thought

Flip I have been doing some career counselling, and happy to share some of the excercises with you when you want to start thinking about work (or should that be if? !) Just contact me through FB - I'm DJ

Belgina LOL at happy meals. They're a staple in my household especially at the weekend when I can't be bothered to cook

Dandy / fi lol at google search

Llare IKWYM about 'Ralph' !!!!!

ReeBee · 29/01/2010 19:58

Ooh Tummum, sounds exciting! Can you tell us more?

Dandy Lace 2 here as well - and Scruples (and Scruples 2).

And SE Hinton - absolutely, had completely forgotten those books existed.

Belgina, sounds like your DS's appt was really useful, and re C's happy meal.

running I still go through phases when I'll read 3 or 4 Terry Pratchetts in a row. Quality writing. I am very about his Alzheimers.

My 2 best friends are pregnant and due within a week of each other - and one of them has been trying for 5 years and was advised she'd need IVF (ovarian cysts removed, chronic endometriosis etc etc). It's my other friend's second - she has a 15 month old already. But amusingly, both dates are pretty much when or just after they came to stay at our new house in early Dec!! They've put it down to the relaxing country life... Anyway, I'm so thrilled for my friend B, I had a little cry when she told me. She's only 9 weeks and will be under consultant care so I have everything crossed for her.

have lovely weekends, all

PS One good thing about being back at work is you get that Friday feeling every week again!!

belgina · 29/01/2010 20:43

Hmm, for some reason MN is displaying all 500 odd messages on 1 page with me

reebee Great news about your friends. that it all happened around the time they came to see you. A relaxing country life it was...

Tumm Great about that business venture. I really hope it works out for you

friday feeling Sadly work doesn't bring that feeling with me, because I could be driving into work on a Friday evening That's shift work for you

Well, C's finally worked out how to roll from her back to her front now. She'd been doing front to back for the last week or so and she's been launching herself onto her belly to grab out of reach things too. So far she's finally been enjoying dd1's rubbery toy bat and dragon (dd1 likes weird animals, she's not a girl that only likes the cute fluffy ones ) and a hair bobble. I think it's time to invest in a fire guard now considering we've been using the woodburner quite a bit.

youngerthanspringtime · 29/01/2010 20:45

watching the end of 'Millions' (film4)and sobbing.

anyone see it? hits home being a mum...

youngerthanspringtime · 29/01/2010 20:53

gorgeous little boy who's mum died, he talks sees visions of saints. at the end he 'sees' his mum and asks her what miracle she did to become one and she said, 'didn't you know? you are my miracle' [or something along those lines]. made me sob.

am I hormonal today?

pulapancake · 29/01/2010 20:59

Evening ladies.

I found myself doing a pg test tonight . I have been feeling queasy for a few days and my boss joked "you're not pg are you?!" and although i thought it was very unlikely, as we've only done the deed a few times in months and months, and i've either been good at taking my minipill or else we've used condoms, i had a spare test at home, so decided to use it. It was negative, but it was strange to do a test when we were not actively TTC. Relieved it was negative, but it felt a bit that i'd never have that excitement of waiting for a pg test result again.

llareggub · 29/01/2010 21:00

All this book talk has got me reading again. I've been to the bookshop today and I've bought The Road to reflect my teenage love of doom and gloom. I'm reading with one eye on CBB while DH cooks pancakes.

We had G's 9 month check today and the HV is concerned that he isn't crawling yet. I'm not concerned, or at least I wasn't until she got me concerned! She told me to get DS1 on the floor teaching DS2 how to do it. I was very dubious but DS1 has loved teaching him today although obviously it hasn't worked. She was even more concerned when I told her that he isn't weight-bearing so she told me to book an appointment with teh GP. Of course when we got home he did it!

youngerthanspringtime · 29/01/2010 21:02

tummum, new business sounds exciting! hope things work out!

Belgina, and there she goes.... babyproofing for you! (we haven't babyproofed in 4 yrs since dd1!)

Hi Reebee! miss you on this side. hope all going well with you, job, house, etc. and hope all goes well with your friends esp friend B!

youngerthanspringtime · 29/01/2010 21:06

llare, H is 9 mos in a few days and doesn't crawl. in fact, my dd1 only crawled at 11 mos, a few weeks before she started to walk. I don't think it is anything to worry about.

youngerthanspringtime · 29/01/2010 21:15

dandy, I'm actually impressed that you write little (nothing ) about your baby. I wish I could write more about my non-parenting interests but, I'm afraid I'm losing myself and forgetting that I've had hobbies/interests before having children.

thinking of this, I've booked a cello lesson for next sat. I only started learning the cello about 8 years ago and got to grade 5 but then stopped before i had dd1 over 4 years ago. I though it would be a good idea to start again even though I feel like I've forgotten how to read music, concentrate, hold a bow...

youngerthanspringtime · 29/01/2010 21:17

ok, I'm talking to myself now [insane emoticon].

I'm sat in front of the fire, 'When Harry Met Sally' in the dvd player (need a comedy/happy film now).

Hope everyone is happy and relaxed tonight.

FiByTheIcySea · 29/01/2010 21:24

evening!

had a long soak in the bath and feel refreshed...

llare ds didn't crawl until quite late as he preferred to roll everywhere. when he did crawl... eventually... he got so fast at it that he was then quite late to walk! he loved his bouncy chair and in comparison to G he spent far far longer in it than she ever did/has. G started crawling much earlier than him so i've been wondering if that's the reason? i'm sure when he starts he'll be off like a rocket!

belgina I get that occasionally and it's usually when MN has logged me out for some reason... check the welcome to mumsnet line at the top of the page to see if it says 'log in'

FiByTheIcySea · 29/01/2010 21:25

hiya momino

FiByTheIcySea · 29/01/2010 21:27

i learnt to play the clarinet as a teenager and got to grade 5... i didn't keep it up at all and feel exactly the same way about reading music. I can still get a simple tune out of it (playing by ear) but DS says it's TOO LOUD MUMMY!!!
