newbeginning hello and welcome! no advice really on the BFing in public... Perhaps you could just find the most embarrassing place to sit down in public and get your boobs out to feed him (don't be discreet, I mean really get them out ) and they may get the message and have more of a sense of urgency next time!!

MissMarjoribanks · 30/01/2010 20:03

Newbeginnings - the NCT counsellor told me you can tell when a bfed baby is full as they put their arms down. It isn't always reliable as if they get full and then follow with sleep cues (for Thomas, chewing on his fingers and yawning) their arms can be up. Its a matter of differentiating between sleep cues and hunger cues, which I'm getting better at.

I understand about the lack of urgency thing - we went to PILs today for lunch, for the first time since the birth and I asked (politely) if lunch could be served sooner rather than later so I could eat before Thomas was fed. MIL (as she always does ) took half an hour to prepare one salad and some cold meats, a task I could have accomplished in under 5 minutes.

Of course Thomas wakes up half way through eating and my boobs suddenly got hugely engorged; I then took him off to feed and got really shivery and felt sick. I've only gone and got mastitis. I'm not mean enough to blame MIL for the mastitis, I'm sure it would have happened anyway. Nevertheless, if I'd known how long she was going to take I would have woken him to feed before lunch and wouldn't have got so engorged. I still feel fluey and shivery now, and it was agony feeding. I expressed after the next feed and that has reduced some of the engorgement but its still sore. It just seems like one step forward two back with the feeding....

Newbeginning1 · 30/01/2010 22:13

Crumpette - i like the sound of being bapalicious in town, i'm sure that will embarass them sufficiently and get my point across!

I'm the same with the post pregnancy weight, i just dont seem to be able to shift it and i know im snacking on rubbish thngs and not being active enough. I know i can lose it though as ive done it before doing weight watchers. Does anyone fancy doing a weekly weigh in so to speak to try and help give some motivation to lose the weight? I'm not suggesting a massive diet as i know for those bfing its a no go but it might help if there are some of us doing it together.

mistletoekisses · 31/01/2010 09:18

Crumpette - I havent put any more on and my stomach has shrunk back really well. But since the birth have not lost another pound! Last time I was really chilled as by this stage only had about 12lbs left to lose to get back to my pre pregnancy weight. Having a whole 28lbs still to lose is freaking me out. But am trying to relax about it and not dwell on it otherwise I will start to obsess and I want to enjoy my baby!
The blue cartons are the one I have. It is only going to be for one feed, but am now experiencing guilt at thought of giving formula and considering expressing. DH thinks I am being silly....but the annoying thing is that I cannot find any concrete evidence about impact of some formula to babys health as opposed to excl. Bfeeding. Is all very fluffy information.
And OMG about your partner and DD...what did your DP have to say for himself!! Am for you!

Newbeginnings - Great idea on the weight loss support. I am going to be sensible and duck out of it for now. Have a history of being underweight and can become fanatical about it. Going to give it a another month and start exercising and building my fitness back up. With DS1 I found that running completely depleted my bmilk supplies (even though they say it doesnt), so walking and xtrainer at first will be tried.

MMB- Hope that you are feeling better and the mastitis hasnt kicked in too severely. I find that some of the older generation who had their DC's years ago and friends who havent yet had babies can be quite clueless about pregnancy/ bfeeding etc.

Newbeginnings - I had this once and pretty much did what Crumpette said. Grabbed the nearest chair at a cafe, sat down and started feeding DS. Told my friends to take their time and get to the restaurant and I would join them there. I wasnt being PFB about it, but if DS got really upset, he wouldnt feed and would scream the place down.

Well last night was another ok night. Got one 3 hour stretch and the others were 2- 2/2 hours, so feeling human today. Hope everyone else and their LO's ok.

WMDO - how are you getting on?

CantThinkofFunnyName · 31/01/2010 09:34

I'm all for losing weight too but its not shifting and I have no excuse of bfeeding either! Tbh I'm eating really sensibly, in fact, incredibly well because my DH decided to go on a diet in January and has so far lost a stone and we have been eating the same things! Loads and loads of salad for bulk with a meal of some description that is inevitably low fat.

I've also taken to doing a fair bit of walking. Took kids to school on bus Friday and walked back (briskly) - about 1 1/2 miles, then in the afternoon I walked to our local high street (about another 1 1/2 miles one way) which is all bloody uphill, had a wander around and then walked back. Now that totally exhausted me. My legs felt like jelly.

Alas, I fear that the afternoon walk was probably a bit too much as yesterday I felt as though I'd had a workout and today my tummy feels quite sore and the muscles feel like I've done sit ups.

So Newbeginnings1 I have 2 stone to lose but you really shouldn't worry about it yet as its really difficult to lose weight when bfeeding and your supply is more important for now.

CantThinkofFunnyName · 31/01/2010 09:43

Meant to say that DH couldn't get Olivia to take her dreamfeed last night until around midnight, which was about an hour later than planned - she was too zonked . But then she slept til 03:45, was back asleep by 04:15 (so only 30 mins awake time for me) and then went through until 07:45. Hoorah!! I really wanted to go back down for a nap this morning though while she's taking hers but the trouble with this time on a Sunday morning is the other DCs then want breakfast and entertaining.

Very bloody cross with DH though... he comes down 20 minutes ago, goes outside and has a cigarette and then says, I'm going back to bed for an hour! Hello???? So he has already had 9 hours straight and thinks its OK for him to go back to bed? He has been really quite good so far and he's working and doing school runs and doing late feeds and doing quite a lot of the meals etc - but am I being really selfish to be a tad annoyed at this? I'm pretty sure that he doesn't understand the whole broken sleep thing and that whilst I'm not sitting at the dining room table tapping on a computer for work purposes, I am still up all day, doing washing, ironing, up and down with Olivia plus all other usual household pottering.

Sorry ladies - minor rant from me.

sockmonkey · 31/01/2010 09:55

Hello. Just wanted to mark my place on this thread.
Wondering whether to go back & read thru, or just take it from here?
Best to catch up I think...
except DS2 is now shouting. No rest for the wicked. Will be back!

mistletoekisses · 31/01/2010 10:15

CTFN - you must take it easy today! Put your feet up, let chaos reign and jam sandwiches all round for lunch. . I feel very lazy in comparison to you - have only wandered around the block a few times, but plan to get out more this week.
I was hoping that Feb will be warmer - and my inclination to get out will be higher. According to the Sunday Times - Feb is going to be freezing. Hmm, may go and investigate some postnatal dvd workouts. Didnt Davina do one a few years ago??

Re. your DH, I honestly think they have lower thresholds for tiredness than us. Plus, does your DH get more stressed about 'providing' for the baby? I think on some level that men do register some stress when another baby arrives. I dont think you are wrong to be irritated at all - but equally, I am ensuring that DH gets one decent lie in on the weekend (on top of using earplugs during the night).

On a complete aside - looks as though Murray is going to lose the Australian open. Federer is a machine!

Morning Jacob had another really bad night not really taking any bottles what he did take he threw back up
His little face is covered in what looks like excema and his poo is really runny.

Ds1 had a milk allergy do you think Jacob could be showing symptoms I really don't know what to do

mistletoekisses · 31/01/2010 11:49

Ali

How does Jacob appear otherwise? Is he alert between feeds? Producing wet nappies? I am not really sure as to what his being unwell at night could mean - he could just have a tummy bug or as you say, an allergy.
But the problem with bubs under 12 weeks is that they can become dehydrated quite easily. It all depends on how he appears loose stools etc aside.
In your position, would either call NHS direct or your out of hours GP service and speak to a medical professional.

OP posts:
alibobins · 31/01/2010 12:14

He is very unsettled just crying but his nappies are still very wet so not too worried just not sure whats happening with him

Its nice to see this thread filling up

mistletoekisses · 31/01/2010 12:19

Ali - . You could try posting on breast/ bottle feeding thread and see if anyone on there can help. There are some health professionals (tiktok) who post quite regularly. You may get some more helpful pointers.

OP posts:
crumpette · 31/01/2010 13:07

alibobins from my limited knowledge those symptoms correlate with those of milk allergy completely, though of course I don't need to partonise you by saying they could be symptoms of something else blablabla

If it's milk allergy you need to get some new formula on prescription. I know a hospital dietician from when DD was ill and remember her telling me about all the different types of milk to enable LOs to digest it properly and not react to any component of it. It's important that you don't use soya products til he's older as they can be allergic to that too. So, my advice would be go straight to GP tomorrow morning, or hospital if things worsen before then, and get some new formula milk for him. If his fontanel is dipped or he stops producing wet nappies and you think he may be dehydrated from the vomiting, take him sooner and I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to give him a tiny bit of cooled boiled water in his bottle

how stressful for you [hugs]

newbeginning I will also decline the weight loss thing because I have a bit of a history of losing rather too much weight in my teens and so I am not weighing myself at all. I just know I'm quite podgy and my jeans are tighter than they were 2 weeks ago!!! When I get less lazy I will take LO for more walks in park etc etc, have just been sitting on my backside on MN eating rubbish!
Also, is this your first baby? When I had DD, it was not until I stopped breastfeeding that I lost the weight. I didn't do anything differently, I just didn't seem to be able to lose any weight while BFing .
If, in a few months or so, it's bothering you then there are also weight loss threads on here. But for the moment I'd say don't worry about it, you have been busy making a whole little person and you're now busy keeping that person alive which is pretty amazing. A few temporary extra inches are nothing to worry about

Please do get bapalicious in Nottingham and report back

On the good news front, I bought a weird 'washpod' bath for baby... and he loves it!! He screamed, but only when I took him out! [success!]

alibobins · 31/01/2010 13:26

*crumpette& back to you x x
Thanks for the advice will phone Ds1 consultant tomorrow see if he will see Jacob really didn't want to go down the same path as Ds1 he has just drank 3oz but is now crying and screwing his face up and clenching his fists

I'm so sorry your feeling trapped really wish someone was close to you to offer you the real life support you need.

I left Dd's Dad when she was 2 months old he'd been having an affair whilst I was pregnant and I found out when Dd was born we then tried to patch things up but he became controlling and a little bit aggresive. It was a really hard decision to make and I will admit it was hard but when Dd was 6 months I met Dh and slowly everything fell into place.

I'm slowly getting used to being a mummy. Little boy is sleeping much better now - about 3.5 hrs at a stretch, which seems like good progress. He appears to have grown visibly overnight: his hands and head look noticeably bigger, and his hair has grown. His eyes have started to look more 'human' and less insecty!

Hope the rest of you Zombies are getting on ok. xxx

somewhathorrified · 31/01/2010 14:27

Had a really bad night with Tobin last night...he would only go down for 15mins at a time. Bless DH bought him downstairs at 9am so I could get a couple of hours sleep, was bliss!

Re weight loss: I've only dared to get on the scales once since the birth and was about 1 1/2 stone above pre baby. Don't really get a chance to get off the sofa atm so no chance of shifting the bulge yet. Not too worried as I've set my sights on getting 6 week check over with b4 looking at exercise...stitches are a great excuse!

alibobins · 31/01/2010 15:03

For some strange reason I didn't gain any weight and I'm now 1 1/2 stone lighter than pre pregnancy not complaining though cos I'm still 2 stone overweight lol

CantThinkofFunnyName · 31/01/2010 16:03

Crumpette - jeez really don't know what to say but good lord, you would be better off without your DP. Long term judging by what's happened so far, do you think you could ever forgive him and live together happily ever after? I totally understand your fears re the financial situation though. Perhaps you could go to Citizens Advice Bureau and see if they can help you work out a plan? Whatever he contributes financially now he should contribute whether you are with him or not. Perhaps you could get on a Housing Association list or something so that you can get housed - perhaps even in a different area, close to where you do have some friends?

Whatever you end up doing - we're all here

Feel a little bad about complaining about DH earlier... Since he got up at around 11:30 he has been grocery shopping and got all foods needed for DD's birthday party at home next weekend; prepared and cooked Sunday lunch, ironed 3 washloads that I didn't finish off yesterday, make up some meals for the freezer for the week and, the best of all, told me to sit on my arse all afternoon and do nothing !

Thankfully, Olivia has also had an easy day so far - let's hope the evening continues in the same vein.

Ali - take Jacob to the Doctors in the morning. You know he isn't himself and that's a good enough reason to seek help. Plus as others have said, you can't risk him being dehydrated. . Also v of you being lighter than you were pre-preg.

Lottie - Good luck in finding some help and an excellent idea I must say. I'm with you on the clothes front. I had a wander down to Sainsburys a week ago just to get some v basic and cheap clothes to tide me over - namely a long jumper, some leggings, a longish top and some jogg bottoms in a bigger size. Other than that, I'm in maternity clothes, which as you say, look ghastly because of no bump - well, still an unsightly overhang because of the c/s! Also, worrying about your fall so soon after your section - eeek! Make sure you get for your 6 week check pronto now.

Oh well, I think I've probably done enough of "nothing" today so going to sign off and eat a lovely Roast lamb supper!

sockmonkey · 31/01/2010 18:56

Lottie - oh yes poo explosions. DS1 once managed to get it all the way up to his hair. How such small people can produce so much poo is beyond me! Very normal I'm affraid, and tends to happen just as you are going out

Can I have a small rant?Ah go on...

I know my problems with DH are nothing in comparrison to some, but TBH I am getting a bit annoyed.
He is still suffering from his chest infection, yesterday he coughed so much that he passed out. (I was feeding bub, heard coughing then a bang... sent boys to investigate who said he was asleep on the floor). I know I should have sympathy, but if he'd taken his 2nd lot of antibiotics instead of thinking he knew better than the doctor, he would be well now, and not causing me even more work. He can't do anything much (apart from sleep, eat & play xbox) so I have 2 boys, newborn and him to take care of. And he's grouchy cos he's sick, and grouchy cos house is getting gradually more messy & chaotic. ARGH!!!!

Sorry about that. I cant really complain to family/friends cos they will think I'm heartless. I am just tired and the fantasy that DH would be home to help has turned out to be just that... a fantasy.

On the other hand, Naomi is lovely & melts my heart.
