hello
wow! this board is so active, it's hard to keep up!

MMB I had to laugh at the blood as exactly the same thing happened with us with DS1. It really freaked us out too at the time. It's amazing the surge of protective feelings you have for them.

I had Sam weighed last week when he was 10 days ... and he had put on over 2 lbs!! It seems that my chocolate and toffee diet is working it's way through to Sam.

shinybaubles · 08/02/2010 17:14

No mistltoe don't worry - not upset. It's freezing here too minus 5 - way too cold.

somewhathorrified · 08/02/2010 17:39

shiny wow your LO is so organised. What does he do when he's not sleeping and feeding, do you have 'playtime' or does he just sit there? Tobin just seems to grizzle if he's not feeding or sleeping, any tips?

shinybaubles · 08/02/2010 17:50

somewhat he has a mobile he's mesmerised by in his playpen, he is begining to try and grab things - he lies around and kicks his legs and smiles. He gets tummy time and looks in a mirror and tries to eat his hands - sometimes however I just like holding him. He likes sitting in his seat and watching ds 1 play.

somewhathorrified · 08/02/2010 18:11

Thanks shiny I think I'm just gonna have to try and encourage some more active time, it might help him sleep better at night.

shinybaubles · 08/02/2010 18:22

somewhat I think your little one is more than 2 weeks younger than Oliver - at first he only played for 5/10 minutes and then omplained so I would pick him up and carry him a bit and then put him back for a bit longer and it gradually increased.

shinybaubles · 08/02/2010 18:24

should read complained - lol

CantThinkofFunnyName · 08/02/2010 18:27

Mistletoe - I changed my registered email address on MN so that I could receive their weekly newsletter and despite getting a confirmation email automatically generated - it wouldn't let me log back in on the new email - or the old one. Anyway, now appears to be fixed - thankfully!

Mama2b5 · 08/02/2010 19:44

Hi all - this thread really moves!
Thanks for the post about the bleeding not quite 3 weeks so i can still handle this!
Ahhhhhh got a toothache - havent eaten a thing all day throbbing pain goin through my ear!went dentist and was so not helpful have to wait till wed,he complained that i had LO with me dahhh BF! wot should i of done let him starve!!!i left there quite tearful!
LO is also doin the pulling off thing and i wander what is happening i have both boobs out so he can choose but he just screws face up and crys loudly! went on my shoulder he is fine and then he falls asleep so worried he isnt feeding right!
DH puts he asleep in seconds i think its because has no smell of milk on him!
CTOFN - prayers to you and yours throughout this time of remembering.

Fraochsmum · 08/02/2010 21:29

Sorry to hear that Mama2b5, I've never had toothache but it sounds awful...and the last thing you want is a row from your dentist I am supposed to get a 3 month descaling from mine, but the next available appointment was 4 months after and today I got a reschedule for a further month...
Re the bf pulling off issue - if so many of ours are doing it, maybe it's just a phase? Cara was at it earlier, so I winded her, changed her etc, etc, but settled when I changed her side. I couldn't understand it because she went on to her least favoured side and there was plenty still coming out of the other?!
OMG HappyBump - 2lb in under 2 weeks??? You have the mighty boobs!

HappyBump · 09/02/2010 07:40

oops just realised that actually Sam had put on the 2lbs in 2.5 weeks not 10 days ... sorry for the exaggeration.

I've found with the pulling off thing as well that if I hold Sam's head in place for slightly longer when he latches after an initial squirming he latches properly then relaxes. This is all while leaning back to stop the flow from being so strong and also positioning a muslim cloth so that I don't get soaking wet each time. Very glamorous being a mum!

We had a long wakeful night last night so am suffering today with my toddler, who has embraced the "terrible" bit of the "twos" ... what fun.

mistletoekisses · 09/02/2010 08:49

Morning all!

Shiny - thanks. Still fairly cold here and they are predicting sleet for the next week or so. Brrrr!!

HappyBump - that is still great weight gain! Well done you! Hope your toddler settles down. With DS1, it basically took a combination of patience/ firm discipline to try and ride out the roughest part of the terrible twos. He is now 2.5 years and is getting better as he is able to verbalise a lot - so gets less frustrated. But it will pass!

Mama2b - Hope the toothache gets sorted. Re. the falling asleep on the shoulder, I think your LO is full. Nico has gone from taking 45 mins to feed to getting a feed within 10-15 mins. Sometimes less than that. If he is hungry/ wants more milk, he will not quieten down until he is given more milk!

Hello Fraoch and SWH

Well we had another ok night. I have now also introduced a dummy as am going to lessen the feeding on demand and try and get into 3 hour routine...growth spurts aside. Nico fed at 3.30 then was awake at 5.30. Gave him a dummy and he went back to sleep for another hour so was feeding at 6.30 which is perfect as DS1 wakes about 6.45 and means we can sit down to breakfast together.
He is also starting to entertain himself for shortish periods of time. Lying him down on his mat by the patio doors and staring at the sky is a winner! DS1 loved it too!

Right off to get stuff done today - sun is actually shining. Have good days all.

Hope all those not posting are doing ok.

muslin cloth not muslim cloth ... duh! I blame sleep deprivation ...

sockmonkey · 09/02/2010 09:40

Happybump I have to tuck a muslin under my boob when feeding too. I agree, it's so very glam

DH's chest infection clearing, but he now has a stomach bug (or had a bad kebeb) It's one thing after another with that man Good job I am pretty healthy LOL.

Got to see MW today to get DD weighed. Had visit from HV last week and she was down from birth weight of 6lb4 to 5lb13. I'm hoping she will be back to birth weight at least. The boys didn't lose any weight, so was a bit of a shock, but am told it's quite normal.
I can't believe she will be 2 weeks old tomorrow. Seems like she has been with us forever.

shinybaubles · 09/02/2010 11:33

sockmonkey ds1 didn't lose any weight ds2 lost 10% of his birth weight and took him 3 weeks to regain it he is ff. Apparently between 7 and 10 % loss of weight is very common.

somewhathorrified · 09/02/2010 11:44

Hi guys. To prevent pulling off while feeding I feed with my hand on the top of his back, index finger just above the neck on his head. I sit with one leg bought up, so my knee and thigh are used as Tobins back rest (think hugging your leg to your chest). Basically the hand controls his ability to pull off, the finger controls head tilt. He can still spit out the nipple if he wants and move his head to the side so he's not imoblile, but the light pressure maintained on his back means he can't pull directly back and get distracted.

Hey everyone.

FlyingMa - id recommend you go and speak to someone about everything. As everyone says things will get easier but i had got to the point where the tiredness was getting me down and being a walking feeder and i just wasnt enjoying DS and didnt feel that motherly bond with him that you're meant to. Even talking to someone can help even if you dont go down any other avenue.

CTOFN - good to have you back and to hear you survived the party.

We've had an interesting couple of days. Jack has decided that he only wants to sleep for 45 mins at a time which is killing me. I honestly do just feel like screaming because i just dont seem to be doing right what DS needs I must admit ive been topping DS up with formula at night to get him to have a good sleep which i dont feel great about but desperate times and all that.. I am completely at the end of my tether though with bfing. I dont know if i have enough milk and i just dont seem to be able to fill him. I know using formula means im in a vicious cycle i just dont know what to do.

Yesterday he also decided to be incredibly sicky and have some lovely explosive poos whilst we were out in Caffe Nero. Literally by the time id changed him and got back to the table he'd done another and with my luck yesterday i managed to run out of wipes just as i'd wiped him clean and taken his nappy off when he decided to start agan (TMI?!) He seems better today thankfully after we saw the dr.

quirkychick · 09/02/2010 20:48

londonlottie it sounds like you are doing wonderfully, especially with 2.

dd1 was definitely a high-need baby. I couldn't put her down, she would only sleep on the boob or on my lap. And it continued for a LONG time...

dd2 is very chilled out and I feed her, swaddle her and she pretty much falls asleep in her cot. So there really is no clear cut answer. All babies are different and any books that offer just one solution don't take this into account.

Back to bfing. We still have very much 1 favoured side. On the left we can pretty much have a proper long feed, I have started to gradually reduce the top-up from 100ml to 80ml - she doesn't always take it all. The right side is really not very good. I start with rugby style hold on right, then we go to left for long feed and then back to cross-cradle on right then top-up. Unfortunately, right boob is starting to ache so I have been expressing every feed to hopefully stop dreaded mastitis .

I have medela electric pump which has been loaned to me through a friend of mw. It is much noisier than symphony but dp is getting used to watching tv with subtitles on . We had a lot of visitors at the weekend which meant that my expressing/feeding went a bit up the shute which is probably why I am suffering now.

flyingma · 09/02/2010 22:48

Thanks all for the msgs of support. I will try to speak to someone about it. I don't really click with my HV and she's retiring in a few weeks time anyway so is a bit offish. One of the local comm MWs was very nice when she came to discharge me - I think she sorta sussed it so gave me a bit of a pep talk so perhaps I might be speak to her again.

Worked out today that switching DS from ready made to powdered formula a week ago was prob what caused the wind/ constipation/ colic which he seems to be getting. Going back out to the shops tomorrow to get more of the ready-made stuff. Also, on the suggestion of someone at BF Cafe, I cracked open the Infacol. He spent the whole day today parping but at least he winds easier and goes down like he did when my mum was helping.

I cannot believe it's only been 3 weeks and 3 days since DS was born. It feels like so much longer!

Newbeginning1 I gave in and resorted to FF on Day 4 coz I was losing my sanity and I think we were both at the end of our tether by then. I have now grown accustomed to the 4-5 hour breaks and being able to eat, sleep and pee in peace. I have to say that I still have problems with BFing which are prob taking me longer to resolve but that means that I have not given up on it totally which is surely a good thing. Lucky for me though, DS is perfectly happy chugging down breast milk and formula as I understand some LOs reject either. It had not even crossed my mind that he might not like formula. Roundabout way of saying that if the BF problem is causing so much stress, your milk supply will struggle too or at least that is what I found.

londonl LOL at the loss of critical judgement... we could hardly blame you! It's so difficult coz with the downtime (when he is latched on) I find myself obessing over little problems (or made up ones) and worrying about it that I don't give some solutions enough time to take effect. It's only been 24 days and I have already been through almost every emotion with my BF!!

sock Hope the weighing went ok. DS lost more than the "normal" 10% at around 6 days old (MW was not happy having to weigh him as she said it was very discouraging to mothers) but by Day 13, he was putting on around several hundred g a day and was 70g shy of his birth weight. I was mix feeding so felt a bit of a fraud but reading some of a horror stories of nursing strikes, I guess you do what you need to to feed your child.

MMB Where did you hire the Symphony from? Did you hire it direct from Medela? Their website don't seem to hire out the flash Pump in Style which was also recommended to me.

I wish there was somewhere that will loan you a selection of breast pumps to try out. I have no issues parting with whatever money it costs to buy one but the rental market (for obvious reasons) does mainly the bigger hospital grade machines but I'd like to give some of the off-the-shelf ones a go to see which I like. It's not like you can take such things back to the shop.

Anymore input from anyone re this is recommended. I am such a wimp I am really looking for one with a gentle setting so that I can build up tolerance of the machine. Focusing on trying to come to terms with expressing as formula-induced pain on bubs is making me upset too.

sockmonkey · 10/02/2010 08:59

DD is back to her exact birth weight. Hurrah!
She also had her first night in her crib last night. DH said he was worried about rolling on her while she was in with us. She did really well... I was a bit anxious about every noise she made. She's a bit of a grunter but i she lasted till about 5.30 before coming in with us.

Mama2b5 · 10/02/2010 10:45

Hi all-

just a quick post to say thanks Fraochsmum & MTK - am off to the dentist again to try sort out this tooth, it has stopped hurting but still am getting it sorted because knowing my luck it will come back again over the weekend at mu best mates baby shower! so expressed 4oz and put in fridge for LO when he wakes if he does before i get back!
have to get him weight he never lost birth weight he gained 3oz last week so need to get him weight this week, also YEHHH got back my M.Cert from mw thankfully!!!! wish me luck appt is for 11am!!

sazlocks · 10/02/2010 11:20

morning all - hope all well with everyone.
DS 2 2 weeks old today. Up for 4 hours in the night with him with the dreaded wind. Tried coiled boiled water which didn't make a huge difference. Nipples feeling like the ends have been chewed off as he did a lot of sucking for comfort. DH has bought some Infacol but I am wondering for those that are using it have you started using it religiously before each feed or do you use it just when the baby has wind ? We used it with DS1 but I can't remember if we started it this young but once we started it he had it before each feed til he was 12 weeks. I don't really want to get into giving it before each feed now but I also don't want to deprive him of something that will help ease the wind.
Any advice gratefully recieved

Fraochsmum · 10/02/2010 11:38

You will be in just now Mama so I hope all is going well for you xxx
That is lovely Sock, you must be really pleased. Cara is getting weighed again today and hopefully she is still gaining - she has put on 9/10oz each week.
I borrowed a friend's Medeva electric pump and used it this morning. I found it good for giving my hand a rest, but my hand pump (Avent Naturally Express) gets it out quicker and a lot less noisily!
DH and I got the cold from the wee one and today I woke up with the mother of all coldsores under my nose Does anyone know if I can pass it on to her?
