Merry Christmas everyone and thanks for the birthday wishes! Eddie had a good day a bit too good I think, as he was really overexcited and didn't really want to sleep last night. He was definitely not ill and was just throwing tantrums because he wanted to be up and playing.

We had a nice Xmas but now MIL is in a big mood cos Eddie kept her up all night (kept HER up, hmmmm....) and about other things that I cannot fathom. So I have let her go out for a walk with DH so she can moan at him about how it's her Christmas too and how she never gets anything she wants and stamp her feet without me being there and having to resist stabbing her in the eyes.

Ah....and breathe, tomorrow we are going to my parents. Only 1 more day!!!!

SummerLightning · 26/12/2009 08:37

Oh I also meant to say daisy thinking of you and hope you had an ok Christmas. Also hope your MIL gets out soon and you can have a celebration with her.

daisydora · 26/12/2009 08:46

Happy Belated Birthday to E Summer. Glad you had a lovely day.

Yesterday was lovely! DD was so excited, DS loved the wrapping, ate like a horse (the boy loves a turkey roast). Although we were up from 5am as some woman was trying to kick someones door in a few houses away from us. She was screaming and shouting that she had 'been with him for 3 years and now he was sleeping with someone else'. I wouldn't normally concern myself with this sort of thing but when I looked out of the window I realised she had her kids with her So I rang the police as the children were screaming and she was trying to put a brick through the window! Who the hell would put their children through that on Xmas Day?? I was horrified.

Then through sheer tirdness as i was prepping the lunch I stuck a knife through my hand! Quite literally all the way through DH had to pull it out as i was about to faint. Fortunately though it was a clean entrance and exit, and no nerve damage, so after a bit of compression, and my Mum's handiwork with steri-strips I am patched up. No way i was spending Xmas day in A&E. It does hurt this morning but I am too scared to take the bandage off till I've had a wine!!!

MIL still in hospital, but we did visit and she was in quite good spirits which meant so was DH. Love to all xx

LadyThompson · 26/12/2009 08:46

PD, you sound like you've been at the sherry

Hope everyone had a good day yesterday. I haven't had much to drink over the last month and we got through a few, er, spots of cheerfulness yesterday so I have a slight champagne hangover this morn. Hmmm. I think I have dragooned DP into coming for a long walk later. I don't actually feel like lots more indulgence today. Besides, I still want to wear those jeans that I wore on Christmas Eve so it might be cabbage soup for the next couple of days...

May I just say to my Secret Santa that the gift was so completely perfect, thoughtful and wonderful it brought a tear or three to my eye? Thank you very very very much.

Today is my one day of relaxation before we start tearing around the country - Midlands 27-29th, home briefly and then London 30th-1st (yay) but I think we are going to spend it poring over the kitchen and bathroom sales on the web. DD was a bit ratty all day yesterday, it was a shame. She is happy to visit people but doesn't really like people in her house, that was part of the problem...

Hope you are all feeling full of festive cheer. Right, coffee...

SummerLightning · 26/12/2009 08:51

daisy! Oh my god at your hand!!!! I hope it's ok but glad you had a good day.

ladyt glad you had a good day!

Oh and in case anyone is offended by my "stab her in the eyes" comment sorry!! Just realised that it is a bit much - it's something someone I used to work with used to say when someone was annoying him and it used to make me laugh.

LadyThompson · 26/12/2009 08:58

Cross posted with Summer and DaisyD.

SL - your MIL sounds like a piece of work. I do wonder what I will be like when I am a MIL sometimes and I am going to try to be one of those rare, angelic, fairy godmother ones....oh well, just hang on until tomorrow...

Daisy so glad you had a good day but the knife through the hand - ouch! You are super brave. Be careful with it and take some painkillers. Veggie or Trace will be on later, hopefully, to give further medical advice!

LadyThompson · 26/12/2009 09:03

It made me laugh like a drain, SL! No one thinks you mean it literally (surely).

The Boxing Day shoot is on around here, it's really quite LOUD.

sybilfaulty · 26/12/2009 09:06

Daisy your poor hand! How terrible! Sounds like you are incredibly brave, perhaps a little too much so, though. Keep it very clean and dry. No more washing up for you. Am so glad that MIL was in fine spirits, all things considering, so your DH must be feeling easier. Much love.

Summer, I say stab her in the eye as well, so know exactly what you mean. Can you pop a bit of Pingu on and have a rest for half an hour?

Lady T, you do sound worrying abstemious for the month of Dec. I feel as though I have sailed through the month on a river of red wine and cava. Now actually feeling like some vegetables and a good walk to atone for the month let alone Christmas day by itself. Sorry O is being a bit miserable. I think they often can get a bit territorial in their own home.

Secret Santa, you are a goddess of the gifting world. I love the good Dr and my hands will be forever grateful.

Right, I am now being harangued by Thing 2 and thing 3 so better go. Good Saturdays everyone.

Kayzr · 26/12/2009 09:42

Morning,

I hope you all had a lovely day yesterday.

Daisy Your poor hand! I do hope it heals well.

Summer Sorry you had a bad night, hope you manage to get some rest.

Thank you ever so much to my secret santa. I just love my pressie. I can never ever have too much nail varnish!!

Hope you all enjoy the rest of the festive season.

InDulciJumpilo · 26/12/2009 10:34

Morning all, very happy birthday to Madam, E and our friend down under! Hope you all had a fantastic first birthday

daisy you brave lady! Really hope it gets better soon, lots of painkillers for you. It's great to hear that your MIL was in relatively good spirits.

Thankyou very much to my secret santa for a super funky knitted beret - however being a bit of an old loser I have no idea how to wear it in the fashionable manner, may need some advice!

waitinggirl · 26/12/2009 11:04

JJ - shove it on and bob's your proverbial - oops, have i just given away the secret???

oh, and thanks for my pressie - i will enjoy relaxing with a cupper and some biccies and instructions for dh!

happy christmas to all of you. madam wore a fabulous spotty dress from gap and looked quite the little mary quant. she is, however, sleeping in our room and cannot believe her luck at 5am that we are there next to her, so she stands up, points and yells at us excitedly. ugh. just as we had 5 mornings on the trot where she woke up after 6.30.

happy belated b'day to E and J downunder.

daisy - that sounds terrible - please do check it out if it starts to feel a bit weird.

ladyt - good luck with the travelling and sales.

dh and i are fat lard arses who must must must do something about it. i don't think we've even seen a piece of fruit outside of a christmas pudding for ages. we are both about 2 stone overweight. must. sort. it. out.

love to all!

Rubena · 26/12/2009 11:33

Oh my God Daisy! I'd have passed out for sure!! Def don't take the bandage off until wine has been consumed. i'm terrible with needles or any type of puncture wound - just a mess, having said that I have a very high tolerance to pain which is surprising to most as they assume if you're scared of needles you're a wimp all round - not the case. Hope it is ok. happy belated to all the Xmas day and surrounding birthdays. Glad you are feeling a little better Lady - but wow what a busy time ahead you have. I know - poo to the drinlies we won't be having - however I will be in the area plenty of times having all the usual pregnancy appointments etc so perhaps we can do a cheeky lunch and I can have a weak spritzer to celebrate?
Poison - hilarious! thanks for the congrats! How many wines had you actually had when you worte that post!!
Well had a lovely Christmas day. mil was happy about dc2 but reckons she suspected as I wasn't drinking at ds's birthday which was unusual of me
DS wouldn't go to sleep at ALL Xmas day and slept a total of 1 hour !! He had a moment or two with massive teething issue but settled then partied until we drove home at 11pm!
I am knackered but fortunately so is ds so he is sleeping and I am clearing the room so we can move as it looks like Toys R Us at the moment in here.
I feel hungover but I didn't drink Christmas is exhausting isn't it - hope you all had a good one.
Oh and thank you thank you so much for my SS pressie. Lovely pj's He got 2 new pairs for Christmas now!

Veggiemincepie · 26/12/2009 11:50

Hello ladies as per usual your posts have made me laugh out loud, sigh with happiness/sadness and gasp in horror, all in a matter of minutes.

The horror gasp I will addres first. Daisy OMGosh that is just terrible, but I'm not surprised with all you have on your mind at the moment. I'm sure your mum has done a great job but I'm sure she has told you you need it looked at by someone. She could probably keep an eye on it (is she a nurse) I'm pleased there is no nerve damage (oh the horror stories I could tell you about hand nerve damage) but you need to have it properly cleaned and assessed. Again if your mum is a nurse she could do it. I wish I lived near you I have a sad nursey love of doing wound dressings esp tricky ones. Anyway where was I oh yes it is a risk of infection esp if you were cutting meat with the knife. Basically whatever was on the knife will be in that would. Also you want to be sure everything will heal properly andbin it's place you need the dressing to hold your hand in a good position otherwise it may compromise your ability to flex your hand. This is obviously all worst case senario your hand maybe completely fine but you need someone to check this for you. Do you have a walk in clinic or oncall GP. If it's clean it could wait til Monday but if it does need suturing it needs to be done in 48 hrs of the wound.

Now the laugh, SL I was laughing at the image of you DH and your MIL going for a lovely morning walk with her wittering on one side of DH completely oblivious to DH having to forcibly hold you back while you wield a knitting needle or some other instrument good for eye poking.

Oh and is she going a bit senile this childish behavious is quite bizarre.

I love hearing about all the secret Santa gifts, I wish I could have joined in but I'm enjoying hearing what you all recieved, so keep telling, Lady what did you get, unless you want to keep it secret.

We had a lovely chilled day yesterday. The mock lobster was hilarious, unfortunately we didn't take a close up photo of it. It tastes a bit more like Chinese BBQ pork but was nice. I made the boys honey soy chicken sate sticks cos it's DS1's fav at the moment and DS2 loves knawing on the chicken. I also added a small corn cob and mushrooms to his sate stick and he was in heaven, the boy is a corn cob monster, he actually goes a bit feral when he has a corn cob, I swear he would bite my hand off if I tried to take it off him.

I was thinking about what you said about your LOs being opposite Aub. My DS's are the same, DS1 is such a sweet loving gentle thing that rarely cried as baby, while DS2 has quite a scream on him and he's not afraid to use it. I think in our case DS1 is very like his dad and DS2 is like me.

Daisy well done for calling the police. Those poor children it breaks my heart. DH and I had a big fight on Christmas eve and DS1 heard and was really upset. We very rarely fight esp not big ones and so he has never heard much in the way of really harsh words. He was crying and told me he 'didnt like how I was talking to daddy' it made us cool down and resolved the fight (It may have been a bit PMS) but afterwards we were saying how terrible it must be for kids whose parents are fighting all the time.

Oh gotta go sad boy on the loose.

Veggiemincepie · 26/12/2009 12:12

Oh and Lady wow on O saying hello, she's clearly a genius.

LadyThompson · 26/12/2009 12:15

Hey Veggie, glad you came on to give Daisy the lowdown on her hand as it does sound a bit worrying and Daisy, you have got so much else on I am concerned you might neglect yourself.

Sorry about the row, Veggie. We nearly had one this morning but just about managed to avoid it by going into different rooms for a bit. The Secret Santa gift was the most clever little box, put together by my heroine Kirstie Allsopp with lots of gorgeous 1950s style illustrations on it, with all the kit you need to hang pictures perfectly! Cord and a spirit level and other bits and even the most darling little hammer! I have tons of pictures for the new house and as well as looking beautiful this is going to be so useful. I was thrilled with it and even DP was impressed.

Rubes, are you going to be under your DH's place for appointments and stuff?

DD has gone backwards with her eating after being ill (unsurprising) so is back on really babyish stuff again. She's never really been a hearty eater.

Time to get out of my pyjamas. I had some Clarins Beauty Flash Balm in with my Christmas presents, my skin feels all yucky after eating like a pig yesterday being ill so time to use it....

LadyThompson · 26/12/2009 12:15

Why won't my strikethrough work?

LadyThompson · 26/12/2009 12:21

Veggie, I think she is realising that if she isn't going to crawl or walk she has got to polish her verbal skills in order to to be able to say "Fetch that, would you please Mummy, there's a love."

Rubena · 26/12/2009 12:24

Lady - I'm thinking I will go there - yeah. The hospital just down the road is apparently terrible> I could always go back to QC which I think is a fantastic place, however, I think it helped with dh there, and although where he is now may not be as highly regarded, I think that given he is there will make the difference - what do you think? having a staff ID = lots of power

Oh and Lady, you have to put the 2 dashes around each word for the strike out - it's a pain in the arse really time consuming

LadyThompson · 26/12/2009 14:03

I'm sure he will be very highly regarded by next Aug. I'm no expert but I reckon go where he is. I definitely would. I think that sort of thing really helps.

About to have the biggest, fattest, juiciest chestnuts you've ever seen, which we bought from the covered market in Oxford. They really are a sight to behold. After thinking I wasn't going to drink today and I am now thinking I could manage a little droplet of mulled wine...

Aubergines · 26/12/2009 19:55

Happy Boxing Day ladies!

Daisy - you are a brave woman. I too am glad Veggie put all that advice in her post as I was just thinking I had read about the importance of getting puncture wounds checked. I didn't want to write an alarming post and Veggie has thankfully removed the need for me to write anything as she (unlike me) knows what she is talking about.

WG - yuck to 5am. Whenever you post about Madam she reminds me so much of DD1. I remember a particularly tiring week in Cornwall when she was 13 months and in our room waking at 4.45am filled with excitement at seeing us. Just keep chanting "this too shall pass".

Rubes - I would go to your DH's hospital for the birth. I too rate QC's but unless you are high risk there is no need to travel to such a specialist unit.

Well we had a lovely Christmas day and Boxing Day at the in laws. DD1 was in seventh heaven running as a pack with her older cousins. We have hardly seen her since presents yesterday morning when she opened her huge stocking and her sylvannian families car (from us) and gorgeous Victorian dolls house (from in laws) and then loudly pronounced that her favourite present was the tube of smarties the nanny wrapped for her! Bless her, she is still talking about those smarties tonight! DD2 stopped teething and decided to prove my last post wrong by being gorgeous all day on both days: smiley, calm, sociable, long 3 hour naps over both lunchtimes. DH also excelled at present buying by giving me a lovely throw for our bed, a wide angle lense for my camera and some v nice underwear. So we are a very happy lot right now.

TheInvisibleHand · 26/12/2009 20:19

Belated Merry Christmas and happy boxing days! Also belated happy birthday to the Xmas babies toddlers and for the birthdays coming up.

Its been especially lovely to read about all your doings, good, bad and very funny.

We're Jewish, so don't really do Christmas as such, but had a slightly surreal not-Christmas turkey at a friend's house locally. It was fun to see people and DS turned out to be a turkey monster.

Am really enjoying having some time off with my two. DD was giggling her head off this evening as DS decided to give her a slobbery kiss and then co-operated when she wanted more...

Aub and Veggie - maybe the shoutier second DC is a second child calling you thing? I know my DS definitely gets more upset than DD - he is generally very chilled, smiley and happy, but when he is in pain/annoyed about something, everyone knows about it - he gets very wailey and clingy. We barely noticed when DD was teething, but that is definitely not the case with him.

BTW - in case anyone hasn't got it, can I heartily recommend Dear Zoo? Its inspired both my DCs into speech - I think DD's first words were RAAR! (for the lion) and "DrZoo" and DS has followed with OoOo for the monkey. Don't know what it is about that book, but they totally love it.

Veggiemincepie · 26/12/2009 21:11

Invis we've got two copies of that book (just recently unpacked) DH has had one copy translated into Chinese by a lovely Chinese tutor he had once so he could read it to DS1 when he was little he loved it. DS2 is really loving books at the moment esp now we have our complete collection back. We have a lot of Australian kids book and one favourite is a book called 'Wombat Stew' it gets to a page with creepy crawlies all over it and he can barely contain himself, he has once jumped up and grabbed and ripped the page he was so excited

Aub that smarties story really made me giggle. I'm glad DS is feeling a bit better. Both my boys had/have bad teething DS1 was maybe a bit worse. He used to be so sad with it, DS2 just gets quite angry as it wakes him and he does not like being woken. I think if it wasn't for teeth he would be an excellent sleeper. My homeopath in London just sent me a supply of 200c pulsitilla & 200c chamomilla. It works so quickly I love it but I still give him neurofen to try to hold him overnight. It works til about 4-5am then he wakes wailing and I give him more of the remedies then he conks our again til morning. He's not too bad during the day if I keep the remedies up to him.

LadyThompson · 26/12/2009 21:14

Ooh, I don't know Dear Zoo, Invis, I will look out for it.

Aubi, do you remember I had a flingette with an actor friend of our mutual friend, and you liked him once? He was in Hamlet on the box tonight. He didn't look very good, I can't think what we saw in him

Anyway, if he is going to the wedding we are going to next year, I had better be slim again by then [fluffs hair] for Reasons of Ego
