Thanks for asking about C flippin She's fine, no worse, no better. Still getting a little upset about the worse of her coughing fits, though mostly she ends a coughing fit with a big sigh or grunt of satisfaction

Belgianrockets · 04/11/2009 22:06

Aargh, just saw this as I clicked post. worst of her coughing fit, not worse and I'm going to throw a in too just for good measure, because I like the emoticon

flippineckitsnearlychristmas · 04/11/2009 22:42

belgian - hope you get a good night, and that C improves. Enjoy your visitors!

I'm very sorry all, I've just discovered Farmville....

BonfireByTheStormySea · 04/11/2009 22:48

Flippin lol i'm currently waiting for a bumper crop of blueberries to grow so i can harvest them tonight before i head off to bed! i've sent my max no of gifts today... but will send you one tomorrow... what do you fancy? i can send you anything upto a goat lol

Jael · 04/11/2009 22:48

Mmumpowder plot relieved to hear someone elses LO is eating/drinking similar to J. J has 3 meals a day too. Porrige for breakfast and puree's for lunch and dinner/fruit puree's afterwards too and drinks similar feeds...thats a weight lifted. I thought J was drinking too much, but I am a constant worry wart!

Llare Do you think your LO is drinking less, because he's eating more? JW

Bonfire J is having a morning feed around 5am and goes back to sleep, porrige brekkie at 8ish, bottle at 11, lunch at 1pm, bottle at 3pm, tea at 5pm and bedtime feed at 7pm, that sounds quite similar to your DS doesn't it? Maybe I'm worrying about nothing...

BonfireByTheStormySea · 04/11/2009 22:49

belgian hope c has a restful night not filled with coughing.

BonfireByTheStormySea · 04/11/2009 22:51

jael yep pretty much as ds was... think you're doing great i'll be asking you for a refresher when we start weaning G!

Belgianrockets · 04/11/2009 22:52

Thanks everyone. She sounds better with her bigger slope atm.

Oh, farmville Thanks Flippin, you've just reminded me. I've got a few trees that must be ready for harvest now. Better go and check. I've learnt not to sew strawberries, because I always manage to let them wither

BonfireByTheStormySea · 04/11/2009 22:54

I tend to grow things that take a minimum of 24 hrs as evening times is when i'll be pottering about on fb otherwise it all withers for me too!

APennyForTheMomi · 04/11/2009 22:54

hello all.

let's see...

that is hilarious

guy fawkes, I've heard so many different versions of what really happened with him, not sure what is true. in York, they even argue over his true birthplace. i always thought he was hanged anyway but am learning a lot about from this thread .

belgian, hope C is feeling better.

looby, i hope you're feeling better soon. I'm not surprised either that you're feeling down, you're going through a tough time.

llare, at unidentified orange food from the freezer. that sounds so familiar.

ok, no news from here. just wanted to catch up. sorry for not namechecking all but hope everyone is well.

and hope all the LO's sleep though.

flippineckitsnearlychristmas · 04/11/2009 22:59

Off to bed now. Think my strawberries will die overnight, that's not a good start, is it?!

BonfireByTheStormySea · 04/11/2009 23:03

my 1st lot of strawberries died too

Morning all,

Here's a poser for you- not sure what i will say if DD probes again. This morning in the car, DD said "mummy, when [her friend] stayed over on Friday, she said that God didn't make the world, but i said he did". I said "well, some people think he did, and some people think he didn't". And she said "yes, but the people who think he did are right!". And i said "we don't really know for sure" and she said "but he did, because they told me he did at grandma's church"...Mmmm, tricky one!

Bad night here, DS2 was awake from 2.10 to 3.30, and 5.15-5.45 so i feel a bit tired. At 2, he fed but got trapped wind and couldn't settle. At 5, he was trumpy and was probably disturbed by DH getting up for his train, even though DH was in the spare room.

DandyDazzler · 05/11/2009 09:55

Question for those of you who have done/are doing BLW -

What food did you start off with?

I gave DS a piece of bread to nibble on yesterday and although at first he did the 'WTF is this' face, he seemed to enjoy it. So, we're about to wean. I'll probably do a combination of purees and solids (don't see how it has to be purely one way or t'other). Will be grateful for any BLW tips. And by the way, I thought the premise of BLW is that you give your baby a choice and let them pick up what they like - is that what you're doing?

runningmonkey · 05/11/2009 10:29

Morning folks,

Belgian interesting that you are finding the natures care nappies ok overnight as these are the ones we have been using and A has been waking up around 4am soaked through if I don't change her when she wakes for a feed! Not sure if its because she likes sleeping on her side so the wee dribbles out of the legs tho.

pula sorry you had a bad night, you might not want to read the next paragraph

Anyway, last night we tried one of the bamboo terry squares with a fleece topped liner. A stirred at 3am and I went in to her and gave her a feed and she was back asleep at 3.25am until 6.45 no leaks but the nappy was soaked through by then. This is the second time she has only woken once and so I'm hoping its the sign of things to come.

dandy been meaning to say that I like the lioness bit too As far as blw goes, A's first food was a bit of banana she grabbed for herself out of her Dad's cereal bowl. Since then she's had a chomp on some cucumber sticks as I thought the cold would be good for her teething and some pear. As she isn't yet six months we technically shouldn't be doing it yet but I decided that it was best to go with her cues but are steering clear of anything other than fruit and veg atm. It is absolutely amazing watching her look at the piece of food, work out how to pick it up and get it to her mouth - its only been a week but her hand-eye coordination has improved already. HTH

pukester I really feel for you and hope things improve soon. I thought bleach did have hydrogen peroxide in it and I'm a science teacher double

Hope everyone else with colds/poorly lo's are ok today.

Belgianrockets · 05/11/2009 10:32

Morning all,

C's having a nap, so my family has gone out for the day on their own. C only had 30 min of nap all day yesterday and she'd been awake from 6.15-7, so I decided to stay at home and let her get her sleep in to help her get better.

dandy Love that dancing lion clip!

pula We get questions like that too, especially as they used to go to a catholic school. I give them boths sides and tell them that it's up to them to make up their mind when they're older. ATM they'll just believe what a person in authority (that's not their mum, lol) tells them.

BLW I tried C with a chip yesterday, but she didn't try to eat it. Actually, she didn't do anything with it. She's still not very interested in food, unless it comes of my plate and she's grabbed it herself, so I have a feeling that I know what direction BLW will go with us.

DandyDazzler · 05/11/2009 10:51

thanks running and belgian

DH showed me that lion clip a few years ago, it made me laugh.

DS has only recently begun to show interest in food. He grabbed something out of my bowl last week but didn't try to eat it. A Like you, running, I'd given him a stick of cold, raw carrot to chew on because I thought that would help his teething, but he wasn't interested. That was a few weeks ago though and certainly since then DS's interest in food has grown a lot. he's grabbed stuff out of my bowl, but didn't try to eat it. He's a little chew on a cucumber and enjoyed a breadstick the other day. Yesterday, when my soup and bread arrived in a cafe he protested, and it seemed to me he wanted to join in. So I gave him some bread and he enjoyed it. He's six months next week so I guess we'll be starting soon. Sigh. It all seems such a faff!

Speaking of which, big respect to those of you who use non-disposable nappies.

flippineckitsnearlychristmas · 05/11/2009 11:35

lol at dancing lion!

We did a kind of puree-BLW combo with DD1 to begin with, but she started refusing a spoon quite quickly (her independent streak shows no sign of waning [rollseyes]). Anyway, we found that plain bread was a bit 'claggy' for her, toast seemed to be more successful. Other good things were breadsticks, pita bread and rice cakes with stuff spread on/to dip; chunks of roast/steamed veg; mini shredded wheat dipped in milk and fruit.

running - yay for your night! Good sleep and good nappies!

pula - intersting question. I have no idea how we'll deal with religion, DH and and I both have no religious beliefs (and not a lot of knowledge!), I guess we'll go down the 'some people believe' route. And yes, we do Christmas, but as a cultural event rather than a religious one, iyswim (with a great big !)

DandyDazzler · 05/11/2009 11:58

flippin Thanks, and @ independent streak showing no signs of waning. I have a little girl like that. The streak was particularly prominent when DD was 2. She wanted to do everything herself, including pouring the cafetiere for me and DH. (Which, it goes without saying, we let her do, because boiling water, a glass container and a two year old are the perfect combo). On more than one occassion I found myself shouting saying "but two year olds can't make breakfast!"

How are you feeling btw?

APennyForTheMomi · 05/11/2009 12:40

Hi everyone.

dandy, the link really made me !

pula, I'm not looking forward to the serious questions about death, creation, good, evil etc. BTW, HOW, how do you get 3 out the door in time to get DD to school? i'm 'practicing' for the pre-school run (January) and we were very slow this morning with all 3 DDs crying at once at one point. it's going to be tough when Jan arrives.

BLW - we're doing a combinations of finger foods and mush/puree. Not going very quickly or eagerly here like it had gone with dd1&2. Harper does love toast so she usually has a bit at each meal; it helps distract her if I'm delayed getting food on the table for all 3 LO's.

dd1&2 are at nursery so just Harper and I for lunch: cheese on toast (my speciality ) and cauliflower soup. i tried to BF her before so she wasn't starving and she had a little feed. then, she kept looking at my toast so I gave her some which she put in her mouth but then cried. i tried cauli soup, she grabbed the spoon and cried. twisted into me so took that as 'more milk', tried that but she cried and kept twisting. maybe she's in pain? tried lunch for about 20 minutes, got frustrated and just put her down for a nap.

some days are better than others. last night she had a few bowls of apple crumble nd loved it. speaking of independence Dandy, she keeps grabbing the spoon from me to feed herself and gets upset when I grab it back to fill the spoon.

it's going to be a slow process, isn't it?

got to go hang laundry whilst it's quiet. hope all are well.

pulaparkin · 05/11/2009 12:54

Momi- the school run is a challenge every day! It usually involves a lot of shouting (mostly me), whinging (mostly DD) and messing around (mostly DD and DS1). DS2 is generally the easiest to manage . Basically you just have to set goals by certain times (e.g. we have get dressed first, then must be at breakfast by 8am, and start getting shoes/coats on by 8.20). DS2 usually gets either milk or solids depending on when he last fed in the night. And if I don't get myself up early enough then things like my shower, brushing hair/teeth, and my breakfast have to wait til i get back home .

I think S is in pain sometimes too Momi - if i give more milk, we end up with more wind, if i give more solids, we get difficult poos. Just trying to find the best balance. I had to put him in my moby wrap today as he was so upset with his poo coming. He really liked it so maybe i should do it more often.

SparklerMaker · 05/11/2009 13:41

weaning we set out with the intention of doing a combination of purees and finger foods. As it turns out, H is not keen at all on being spoon fed, unless he can grab the spoon himself, so it means purees are quite hard work In that respect H is totally different from the other babies in my NCT group who all have their mouths wide open and get really excited as soon as they smell the food. I have a feeling the other mums think I'm a bit mad for doing BLW so I don't mention it much. Probably I'm being over sensitive, I don't know

Anyway, I digress, first foods - H's very first food was a North Staffs oatcake (bit like a pancake) which he enjoyed crumpling, ripping and even getting some to his mouth. After that we tried various bits of fruit and veg but he was struggling to get them to his mouth and didn't seem interested in persisting if he dropped anything. So I gave him some hunks of fresh bread (easier to hold) and he loved it!

It's amazing to see how quickly H has come on in a month. He still eats very little but judging from his lumpy nappies something is going through every day. His grip and his hand eye co-ordination have improved hugely though, and he'll concentrate for ages, much longer than I could leave him with any toy. So, after worrying for the first few weeks about whether he'd ever eat anything at all, I'm feeling steadily more confident. Goodness knows when he'll get to eating a 'full' meal but I feel like we're on the right track.

DandyDazzler · 05/11/2009 13:57

Sparkler Sounds like you're doing great.
It takes babies a long time to do proper meals, even if they're on purees. The process is meant to take a while. That's why babies still have milk feeds until they're at least one.

DD was weaned on purees. Banana first, I think. The only thing I'm opposed to is baby rice. I hate the idea of it - so artificial, it looks and taste so unappetising.

SparklerMaker · 05/11/2009 14:08

Thanks for the reassurance Dandy. It's just that I've watched the other NCT babies eating what seem to me quite a large quantity, eg a whole mashed banana followed by a petit filou yoghurt, and the amounts H eats is tiny in comparison.

What do you all think about letting your LOs have foods with sugar added? I wasn't going to give H anything sweetened until he's older but then noticed the jar of Hipp banana breakfast he was having (which says 'from 4 months' on it) had 12g of sugar in it and I was a bit Am I being a bit PFB??
